Kal chokes up. Despite being grateful they let Hew go, they can't help but ache for a weapon's grip in their hands, if only to hurl it into one of the trees surrounding them. Is this their eternal fate—a punishment for failing their homeland? To find communities and places they can call home, only for them to be ripped out underneath their feet the second they find peace? Is that why they walked out of the Spellsmere with Flint and Oscar's rings tied around their throat—a curse their other self inflicted on them? "I can't keep doing this, Mikko." They slide down to the ground against a tree, uncaring of the way the bark scrapes along their back. "I can't keep losing the people I love." Or, in the wake of a crumbling home, two found siblings find what it takes to keep going, even as they're driven apart.

Hey, y'all! This is the first of many, many, many D&D fics that I'll be posting in the near future. This campaign has kept me in a chokehold for the past year, and seeing as I wrote over 120k for it alone during that time, I figured I was ready to show y'all what I've been working on.

Grian has been missing for a week. The other Hermits have spent that time searching his last known location and their magic for ways to try and find him. It's a full moon tonight, and Pearl is hoping the extra boost that gives her magic will help her find clues. It works, though not in the traditional sense, and Pearl, Impulse, Scar, and Xisuma race to rescue Grian from the Deep Dark before things go horribly wrong. Unfortunately for them, the Warden is not so inclined to let people leave.

They could not be more different if they tried-a soft-spoken princess and a warrior sharp as he is blunt. Thought I’d try a new format for fun! This is just a little celebratory nod to the Project IRIS teaser as well as my return to the JSE community. I’ve missed you guys, and I’ve missed these characters. It’s time to rain hell on Chase Brody once again. /hj Hope you enjoy!

The following is part of a series of audio logs conducted under supervision between Dr. Lewis Hopkins and ALTR 1013. All records require Clearance Level Six. Any IRIS associates found accessing these records below Clearance Level Six will be terminated immediately.

Dr. Lewis Hopkins: Hello, [REDACTED]. Thank you for agreeing to meet with us today.

ALTR 1013: I didn't agree to anything. Your guards attacked me and brought me here. I don't even know who the fuck you are.

Hopkins: As a reminder, [REDACTED], you are on camera. Anything you say or do is being recorded and can be turned over to the police at any time. You consented to this when you signed the waiver.

1013: I didn't sign anything! You guys grabbed me and stuck me in this cell!

Hopkins: Let the record show that [REDACTED] is showing direct hostility. If further disturbance continues, I will be forced to reassess threat and containment levels.

1013: Are you threatening me?

Hopkins: It's not a threat; I'm merely making you aware of the steps I am able to take should I feel unsafe as we speak.

1013: And what about me? What can I do if I feel threatened by you?

Hopkins: [REDACTED], you agreed to this. We do not appreciate any attempts to revise the fact, especially when we have the proper documents filed with your signature.

1013: ...I want a lawyer. This sounds like something I need a lawyer for.

Hopkins: We aren't the police. A lawyer isn't required, nor are we able to charge you. However, should we deem it necessary, we can and will call the cops at any time.

(A chair scrapes along the floor.)

Hopkins: Personally, I've heard you've been made into quite the news story. A [REDACTED] that murdered his wife and family? The media's out for blood. If the cops do find you, you'll never see the light of day again. Or, on the off-chance you are released early, your trial would be so publicized that your name would be tainted forever. No one would want to hire you, and from what I've heard, you've had a hard time paying the bills as it is.

1013: (quiet) How long have you been watching me?

Hopkins: That's classified information.

(Papers shuffle. A pen clicks.)

Hopkins: Now that we've established the parameters, what can you tell me about the day you murdered your family?
