The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced that they would rename their minor league called the Development league or D- league to the Gatorade league or G- league after an agreement with Gatorade for naming rights.  The NBA is used to companies willing to shell out big bucks for category sponsorships including Kia, State Farm, Taco Bell, and Anheuser-Busch.  The NBA has made numerous agreements allowing teams to put small company endorsements on player’s jerseys during NBA regular season games.  During most TV time outs companies will license their name for an event occurring on the court, like a free throw shooting contest.  Of course, every halftime show on TV has a sponsor, for example the Kia Halftime Show on TNT.  

 During the 2015-16 season, sponsorship licensing spending in the NBA grew 8.1% to $799 million, beating all three other major U.S. pro sports leagues.  This is the first time one of the four big U.S. pro sports leagues had named an entitlement sponsor.  The NBA and Gatorade have also teamed up to offer a one of a kind experience showing the behind the scenes of specific players on their journey to reach their goal of playing in the NBA.  Other Professional sport leagues have incorporated this type of sponsorships like NASCAR and their Nextel Cup Series, or the PGA and their developmental tours including the Nationwide Tour, Nike Tour, and Web.com Tour.  This trend will continue, as companies are moving past traditional branding methods in order to increase brand awareness.

U.S. Soccer’s Growth Is Giving Brands a Kick

The growth in U.S. soccer is giving brands a major boast in advertising.  Major league soccer in the U.S. has long been in the shadow of the other big four professional sports leagues (basketball, football, baseball, hockey).  The MLS (Major League Soccer) broke an attendance record last year with over 7.4 million fans attending games, with an average of 21,692 fans per game. Attendance is up 40 percent from ten years ago.  Sponsorship and advertising spending grew over 9 percent to $333 million.  

Not only is sponsorship and advertising spending higher, but also some major companies became sponsors. The list of new sponsors in the past five years includes; Heineken, Coca-Cola and Audi.  In addition, Facebook announced it would live stream at least 22 match through the year.  In January Target signed on as an MLS sponsor.  Sales of soccer apparel grew by 10 percent at Target stores in 2016. Also, with the recent success of the women’s national soccer team, wining a gold metal in 2015, I can only imagine that sponsorship spending and advertising will only continue to grow. The future of soccer in the U.S. looks bright and will continue to grow throughout the U.S.

It is known that basketball is one of the most popular sports in world and is competed professional in almost every country.  Many boys who are born in the U.S. have dreams of playing in the National Basketball Association and for many this dream will never come true.  Based off the marketing intelligence that we have now individuals can no longer assume that they can play basketball anywhere in the country.  This was the case for two American born basketball players Joseph Jones J.P. Prince who were giving the opportunity play for Azad University Tehan, which competes in Iran’s super league.  Recently on a team funded break to Dubai President Trump signed an executive order, which prohibits refuges and citizens from seven predominately Muslim countries from entering the U.S.   Iran was one of the countries on that list.  Before the players had a chance to return back into the country Iran already ordered a ban of all U.S. citizens from entering the country.  The players are currently in a tuff situation not only can be subject to forfeiting several game checks, but they can’t even return to home to retrieve any of there personal belongings.

 It has become apparent that many individuals have voice their opinion on President Donald trump’s executive order, which prohibits refuges and citizens from entering the U.S. Some people agree with President Trump stating it’s all for the greater good of our country to refuse citizens and refuges entrance into our country. While others believe it is a direct Muslim ban, and goes against everything this country has stood for the past hundreds of years.
