Okay, Octopath:
Halfway through Ch 4 at this point—still have Ophelia, Hannit, Cyrus, and Prim to do. Was going to do Ophelia today but got distracted by the 4 special-class shrines and their respective bosses.
The Sealticge’s Seduction/Reflective Veil trick got me through the Dreisang and Steorra fights without too much trouble. Balogar took some tries and got me a bit worked up, but once 1) I realized he could be poisoned and 2) I had enough cash to summon Veteran Soldier a couple of times, I managed to sneak by him. Winnhehild completely fucking destroyed me the first time but went back and did the Tressa/Runelord sidestep trick once Balogar was down and she was no trouble.
Then, just to see, I went back to attempt the Devourer of Men again and nope! Ain’t happening yet. I dunno who they’re kidding with that 45 Danger Level, I’m gonna have to be at like 60 to take that shit down. Haven’t tried the wolf in the woods yet either—my average level’s still only 51 at the moment.
Story-wise, there’s definitely been a sense for a minute that all the plot lines were connected, so it’s cool to see that finally coming together. I’m still not sure how a couple of the remaining threads will fit in, but I guess we’ll see!

Mun Plays Octopath Traveler
PHEW! I finally finished Cyrus’ story! However I’m getting ahead of myself.
Picking up where I left off, I properly started Alfyn’s Chapter 3. I respected Alfyn’s desire to help people, but knew all too well that some people can betray that trust. And I came to realize that Miguel was the first character, human or animal, that Alfyn has canonically killed. Even that giant serpent in his Chapter 1 was simply knocked out. But anyway, after that, I moved to Wellspring for Therion’s Chapter 3.
I want to briefly mention something I neglected last time. When Primrose was stabbed and recovering, I instantly thought of a picture I happened to see by @blahblahblahviolentpain, seen here. Beautiful art piece it was, though I didn’t know the context until I saw the scene that would cause the scene drawn. And I now headcanon that everyone did what they could to help and make sure Primrose lived; even Therion helped, even though he wouldn’t admit it.
Anyway, for Therion’s Chapter 3, I attempted to steal a mask from someone, but I had already failed a few times prior (which I completely forgot about), so I ended up souring my reputation, causing me to go back to the barkeep and restore my reputation. And while I was there, I stole the list. Inside the cave, the goons were easy enough (of course), but Gareth was a bit more of a challenge, not that I minded. And it was nice to see why Therion was so against working with other people. Though I imagine he’s come to trust Cyrus and the others, again, even if he won’t admit it. And the special thing? While I was fighting Gareth (with Cyrus, H’aanit, Primrose, and Therion), I had Primrose use Bewildering Grace and managed to get JP X 100! So everyone in the active party got, like, 50,000 JP!
Next came H’aanit’s Chapter 3. The fight against the Dragon was... something. I got a Game Over the first time. The second time, I won, but Ophilia was KO’d, so I restarted from the save There was also the fact that she was really underleveled. But I managed to win the next time after a long, hard-fought battle. And it was nice to see Alaic had a crush on H’aanit, but she was far too dense to see it. Just like Cyrus.
After that, I went to Goldshore for Ophilia’s Chapter 3. Nothing major, though the “bosses”, if you can call them that, weren’t too much of a threat, especially since they healed for 800 HP each time, which I could easily out damage. However, the battle may have gone on longer than I would have liked because I held back on using their weaknesses because I wanted to extend the Break for as long as possible and Cyrus was one of the last characters to go. So as a result, half of their weaknesses were locked, making the battle take longer since most characters in the party were magic users. Afterwards, hearing Whispermill caught my interest, since I went there previously, where no one spoke. So I figured it would be a good chance to see what was up.
Once that was done, rather than go do Cyrus’ Chapter 4, I instead went to the Shrine of the Archmagus, since Cyrus was level 50 with Olberic close behind. I also had Primrose in the party, but kept Ophilia because I wanted her to get up to speed. The battle against Dreisang was long and hard, but I managed to keep things going until I looked at the wiki and discovered that I could use Sealticge’s Seduction on Ophilia and have her use a max boosted Reflective Veil to give the entire party multiple reflects, which made the battle way easier. I managed to win and gave Cyrus the Sorcerer job, which I instantly maxed, due to still having quite a bit of JP.
I also tried my hand at the Shrine of the Starseer, but failed horribly, so I went to Duskbarrow. The tresk through the ruins weren’t all that tough, but the boss was something else. And by that time, I had swapped Ophilia out for Tressa. I lost the initial battle against Lucia, mostly because I was trying to figure her weaknesses out. For the rematch, I gave Primrose the Cleric as a secondary job and tried again. I was able to stifle a good amount of her damage by having Tressa use Shackle Foe to lower her damage. I also had Olberic use Rain of Arrows and Thousand Spears to break her guard before going to town.
Her second phase was much easier, since I figured she’d be weak to magic without having to use Analyze. So I did the same trick as with Dreisang, reflecting almost all of her magic attacks back at her. The only issue was when she occasionally used a normal attack. When I broke her guard, I again dealt as much damage as I could, even had a few Large Soulstones that dealt some really good damage. And for the third phase, well, it was pretty easy. Breaking her guard was easy enough and she was on her last legs and it was Olberic and his Cross Strike that dealt the finishing blow, though I was hoping to use Brand’s Thunder to finish her off, but no matter.
Now that all that’s done, I’m ready to work on Tressa’s Chapter 4... later. It’s late, so I turned off the game to continue later. By my judgment, I may be able to finish 3 or 4 other stories (including Tressa’s) during tomorrow.

Well then!
Octopath Gameplay spoilers again!
...
So! remember that tip about the Arch Magus? Use Sealticge’s Seduction on a Cleric, have the Cleric use Reflective Veil and you’ll make the match easier?
Well. That same trick works even better on the Starseer! She broke her own defenses when I pulled this trick! I was kinda shocked to say the least.
And again! The Runelord and the Warbringer. They were hard! I barely scraped by with those two! Funny how things work out I guess. (Also the Warbringer looks fantastic, I will be shocked if I don’t see fanart of her sooner or later)
Oh! And if you’re in a bind with the Starseer fight, try bringing an apothecary along to help with the status ailments. Worth a shot!

Beat Ophilia’s Story...just chose her first cuz she’s my main. I’ll do the other Main 4 each on their own day this week, then get to grinding for the others...
Cut for spoilers!
It took me two tries since I wasn’t expecting that BS “lock all your spells that hit multiple targets” thing and I couldn’t heal. Too bad that didn’t count if the user used a single target after being hit with Sealticge's Seduction! Reflective Veil to throw back spells, multi-target First Aid (giving Ophilia Apothecary as a secondary was the best decision I ever made). And multi-target Holy Light to damage both minions at once!
Also...Tressa got the final blow merely knifing Mattias since she had nothing better to do atm as she wasn’t re-upping Ophilia’s Sealticge's Seduction so she could reapply Reflect!
A good amount of my final blows on the bosses were one of three things. 1. Ophilia blowing shit away with Holy Light. 2. someone pissy hitting things with a weapon while boosted either to Break before a big attack or just because they had nothing better to do while said boss was in Break. or 3. Bifelgan’s Bounty spam since 9 times out of 10 Tressa had nothing better to do or it was doing more damage than Cyrus doing a fully boosted 2x Elemental attack! The remainder were Cyrus casting some spell or single weapon hits, most notably on Cyrus’ Chapter 1 where Ophilia killed him with a staff while Cyrus was silenced!

Octopath Travelogue, Cyrus Chapter 4
I ran around and did a few sidequests, the most interesting of which informed me that Cordelia is only 17 years old, likes to travel, and is pen pals/gal pals with Noa. Somehow I feel like a trio of Tressa, Noa, and Cordelia would all get along great.
Then I formed an unusual party of Cyrus - Cleric, Therion - Dancer, H'aanit - Merchant, and Alfyn - Warrior, and headed up to Duskbarrow from Victors Hollow. Found yet another shrine on the way...made my way inside, fought my way through, and found myself face to face with the Archsage. It was a tough fight, especially since he immediately shut down my attempted strategy to try and use Sheltering Veil after Sealticge's Seduction by doing that thing where you can't apply buffs...but I was able to pull through, mostly thanks to One Cool Trick that Archsages Just Hate. When I did manage to get Sealticge set up on Cyrus...I misclicked and set up a boosted Reflecting Veil first, instead of Sheltering. Meaning everyone had 4 reflections set up. Meaning...when he cast an all-party spell that hits three times, twelve frost blasts reflected back and hit him for 4000 damage each time for a total of 48,000 damage. He didn’t last long after that. 😀
So now here I am with the Sorcerer job, and Cyrus just so happens to have enough JP stored up to learn everything at once. Now he looks like Doctor Strange and is ripping shit up. It is awesome. This strange blood magic cult doesn't stand a chance.
Here we go with my last Chapter 4... 🙁
Oh hey, there’s Lucia, right off the bat. Time to Metal Gear this shit. 😀
H’aanit: “Thou art confident of our success.” Cyrus: “I always am.” That was a Sherlock Holmes-as-fuck line.
For some reason, the prompt to press the button reminded me of a classic: the “Push the big red shiny button?” prompt from the original PS2 Ratchet & Clank. I’m a little disappointed this one didn’t blow up in Cyrus’s face like that one did. Heh.
“I must be losing my wits. How does one even go about pulling a button?” Bahaha.
Smash it? Twist it? Flick it? Punch it? Bop it??? 😀 This is getting silly. The answer was to twist it. Again, mildly disappointed that it wasn’t something completely out of the box like just ignoring it entirely.
Heh, this banter between Cyrus and Therion is, for once, completely true to how my game has played; I’ve never classed Cyrus into Thief or Therion into Scholar. It’s cute that they think the other would be good at it, though. (...And it’s mildly depressing that Therion thinks about what it would’ve been like if Cyrus had caught him when he was younger, and how he might have turned out different. 🙁)
Anyway, let’s mosey. The last final dungeon, at least of the normal game...
...Runes...of High Hornburgian...flowing forth from some kind of gate, you say. Hmmmmmmm. 🤔
An underground library? Like the one Sokka enthusiastically declared he was going to spend his summer vacation at?
“No, such a vast repository of knowledge must have been accumulated over decades...even centuries!” Are you suggesting, Cyrus, that your enemy is centuries old? Perhaps someone given eternal life by some dark force to enact its agenda? 🤔
“One thing is clear: if there is a mastermind behind all this, I can expect to find him here.” Him? ...Cyrus, come on. How are you not utterly suspicious of Lucia and whatever her agenda may be at this point? Did you forget she literally stabbed you in the back? 🙄
Twenty years after Cyrus’s conversation with Tressa about how to disseminate the knowledge in these books quickly, efficiently, and cheaply, Cyrus invents the printing press and does just that with all the tomes in this library. I guarantee it. 😉
Aw, shit, am I here already? Seems like it: ominous staircase with a circular platform at the top upon which Lucia stands. Let’s do this...
I like that they’re using all this highfalutin’ language with each other. It’s conveying their sense of “I’m gonna see you fucking dead by the end of this conversation” quite well. Heh.
A passionate searcher for the truth, eh? Guess that Honest Trailers spoof that happened yesterday was kinda accurate in calling Cyrus Phoenix Wright. I still say he’s way more Miles Edgeworth, though.
Ahh, this is gonna come down to their differing views on teaching lost knowledge, isn’t it? She’s just another selfish prick who covets all the secrets of the universe for herself because she feels entitled to know it as a self-professed genius. Whereas Cyrus believes the secrets should be spread among everyone so everyone can learn...and that even includes the “simpletons,” the mediocre ones, because he believes everyone has the capacity to learn.
Cyrus really is a good teacher, explicitly saying he hopes to one day learn from his students as they learn from him. I think the best teachers understand that it’s a two-way street.
Oh my god Lucia’s actress’s reading of “...Enough” was terrifying.
Alright, here we go! She hulks out too, which is kinda disappointing because I wanted to fight her in her normal form, but whatever. Another good ol’ summation from Cyrus, and it is time to throw down! Let’s do thi--I’M SORRY WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE HAS 30 BREAK POINTS.
Okay, those went down quicker than I thought, largely thanks to -- I can’t believe I’m saying this -- Rain of Arrows. That bow is really helping the multi-hit skills be actually effective. And now, it’s time to unload. Heheheheh.
Alright, she’s in the yellow, and she’s changed tactics -- no longer physicals, apparently throwing super-powerful spells. Her defenses have changed appropriately as well. This fight is clever. And this part, in particular? Going way faster than it probably should, thanks to the three-hit spells of the Sorcerer. I think it’s thematically appropriate, though.
And that’s her down on the second break, with H’aanit’s big...ice bird whose name I can’t remember dealing the final blow with an Ice Floe. Bada-bing, bada-boom. 😀
Lucia fades away just like Yvon, and there’s From the Far Reaches of Hell at last. It is...big, holy shit. I think it’s like the size of Cyrus’s torso.
Oh, interesting, we’re not actually done with the chapter? We have to actually do the deciphering right now? 😶 Huh! Okay then!
It would appear the gods sealed the power off the edge of the world...
The forbidden power of the gods has been likened to a golden fruit...
A ritual to bring back the forbidden power from beyond the edge of the world...
And the mural...🤪😬🤪...UM. FUCK. THAT’S. THAT’S REALLY SCARY.🤪😬🤪 Like, that is The Shining “Wendy discovering the hundreds of typed pages” scary! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.
And Cyrus concludes that that means...a warning, to never open this gate and release the forbidden power.
...Which, of course, people are trying to do, even if people like Mattias claimed he didn’t have to.
I understand his reasoning for not destroying From the Far Reaches of Hell, but it still unnerves me to have this tome of necromancy still around, because that means it can still be taken and used for evil, as he’s so afraid of. Destroying it wouldn’t destroy “the darkness in the hearts of man” (very Castlevania, that line), sure, but it sure as hell would deny them a very useful tool. 😕
And back to Atlasdam we go to burn the midnight oil.
Oh, and hey, you have more than two students this time. Go you, Cyrus. ...wait, Susanna Grotoff? Like...the Susanna who lives in Stillsnow? H’aanit’s kinda-grandmother?
This speech, and Cyrus’s whole philosophy of teaching so that knowledge can be passed on to those who follow...kind of reminds me of Hamilton’s dying speech in the musical. About your legacy, planting seeds in a garden you never get to see. Somehow, though, I don’t think Cyrus is as upset about it as Hamilton was. I think the whole idea is that he’ll only feel secure knowing that those who follow have what it takes to win.
And that’s Cyrus, the last of the Octopath Travelers. All eight tales complete at almost precisely 80 hours flat.
...
...now what do I do? ☹
I loved this game so much, it’s hard to believe it’s over. But I’m determined to poke around and see if there is, indeed, some mysterious endgame involving Galdera, the Gate of Finis, and Graham Crossford. There’s still plenty of sidequests left, too. So, we’ll see how that goes.
If anyone is reading this, thanks for putting up with these posts. It was a lot of fun to document all this crap running through my mind for a game I fell in love with. 🙂
See ya for the sequel series of posts about the postgame, I guess!

Octopath Post game tip
Kind of a spoiler but I’m not really talking about any story related stuff. Just gameplay shenanigans. But! Some folks will likely wanna go at the game on their own so better safe than sorry with this stuff.
So! In the later part of the game you start running into the extra job shrines with the tough boss fights? I inched a win past the Runeblade and the War-bringer but I found a combo that works exceedingly well against the Arch-Magus!
Bring a Dancer and a Cleric to the Arch Magus fight. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Primrose and Ophelia, just make sure you have Sealticge’s Seduction and Reflective Veil available to use. When you get a chance to pull off this combo seduce your cleric, cast a buffed up Reflective Veil (I aim to do this several times using pomegranates) watch as the Arch-magus punches himself while you enjoy a few rounds of no damage!
