Although by 1350 the Mongol Empire had disintegrated into a number of rivalling khanates, the continuing nomadic threat to China’s inner Asian land frontier persisted. The strategic dilemma posed by the nomads is often cited as a key reason for the Ming dynasty’s retreat from the sea, represented by their famous decision not to follow up Admiral Zheng He’s naval expeditions in the Indian Ocean. The inward turn of the Ming Empire, though often exaggerated, nonetheless did signal the abandonment of seaborne expansion, and as an indirect result, the eventual weakening of the Empire vis-à-vis its soon to be Western competitors. The very withdrawal of powerful Chinese fleets from commercially and strategically important nodes of the Indian Ocean littoral meant that the Portuguese and Dutch had a considerably freer rein during their later, 16th-century penetration into the region, assisting their success in capturing ‘vital emporia and crucial strategic locations’ throughout the Ocean. ‘In this sense, “Chinese abdication was Europe’s gain”’. Had it not been for China’s central strategic problem, the nomadic threat, we could speculate that it might well have reached the Americas first.

a very good point. we should be getting tribute for our services. but also, there are certain intangible benefits one gets from this position.
but also, we should become even less reliant on seaborne trade. this is all the more reason to build up the New World.
belt and road initiative for the americas. imagine a land-route -- road and train -- between north america and south america. and obviously this would be supplemented by seaborne trade. but it's just better to have as many routes as possible.
additionally, while i think we should be "reshoring" critically important industries and high-end manufacturing back to america i do think we should nearshore some of the less-critical industries. that is, we should bring them back to the western hemisphere. as china increases to modernize and wages get higher they're going to be less competitive anyway. but bringing industry to the americas will reduce costs because it brings production closer to the consumer.
and then not to mention it will bring jobs and wealth to latin american countries which will help stabilize their countries and will reduce "push" factors for would-be immigrants. and the more integrated pan-american economic network would foster a sense of community between all the many american countries.
#also in another post this noah guy makes the noteworthy observation#that pretty much all of these chokepoints are along europe and asia#yet neither have seem to interested in doing anything to protect these trade routes#anyway we also need to work out our shipbuilding crisis

Russia’s Oil Revenue Drops Sharply as Price Caps Work, IEA Says
Russia’s oil-export revenue fell to lowest in more than a year in February as buyers of the nation’s barrels largely complied with price caps and sanctions, according to the International Energy Agency.
The flow of money into the country from international oil sales fell to $11.6 billion last month, down more than 40% from a year earlier, according to the IEA. February crude oil and product exports averaged 7.5 million barrels a day, the lowest since September, the agency estimated.
“Although it has been relatively successful in sustaining volumes, Russia’s oil revenue has taken a hit,” the IEA said on Wednesday in its monthly report.
Western countries and their allies have taken a number of steps to reduce Russia’s oil proceeds, a key source of revenue for the national budget, in order to limit the Kremlin’s ability to finance its war in Ukraine.
The coalition of nations have imposed ceilings on the price of Russian crude oil and refined products, which are designed to ensure the keep country’s energy flowing onto world markets while curbing revenue. The price restrictions came on top of European Union bans on imports of nearly all seaborne Russian crude and petroleum products, depriving the Kremlin of what has historically been its largest energy market.
The bans forced Russia to find alternative markets in the Middle East and Latin America and expand supplies in Asia, yet the western caps gave the new clients the leverage to negotiate lower supply prices. The restrictions stipulate that buyers from third countries can access such western services as insurance and shipping only if they comply with the caps.
Price Caps
Initial market signals indicate that Russian crude oil and petroleum products on average were sold well below the price caps last month, according to the IEA. The agency’s calculations may be a factor in discussions between European nations on Wednesday, with Estonia, Lithuania and Poland arguing that the ceiling can be set much lower.
The weighted average export price of Russian crude was at $52.48 a barrel, compared with a cap of $60, the IEA calculated using data from Argus Media Group and Kpler. The estimates are for the so-called free-on-board, or FOB, price, which excludes shipping and insurance costs.
Urals crude, Russia’s key export blend, sold for $45.27 in the Black Sea market, while such blends as ESPO, Sakhalin and Sokol, designed to be sent to Asia, traded well above the cap, according to the IEA.
Russian diesel and gasoline, and lower-value products including naphtha and fuel oil, also traded on average below their caps of $100 and $45 a barrel, respectively, the data show.
The IEA drew a different conclusion to the US Treasury, which estimated that only 25% of Russian oil sales occur below the cap. Still, both parties say the restrictions are doing their job by curbing Russia’s budget revenue while keeping export flows robust.
The IEA revised up its outlook for Russia’s average 2023 oil output to 10.4 million barrels a day, which is still down 740,000 barrels a day from the prior year.
The country’s production “has held up surprisingly well following its invasion of Ukraine as measures have been put in place to facilitate the re-routing of crude oil exports to new markets,” according to the IEA.
In retaliation for western sanctions, Russia pledged to cut its oil production by 500,000 barrels a day in March. So far, according to Bloomberg ship-tracking data, there’s no sign of export flows being affected. Russia’s refinery throughput in the first days of March dropped 2% on February levels, but the cuts may be partly an effect of seasonal maintenance.

Marine Lubricants Market: Current Analysis and Forecast (2024-2032)
According to a new report by UnivDatos Market Insights, the Marine Lubricants Market is expected to reach USD billion by 2032 by growing at a CAGR of 2.5%.
Introduction
Global marine lubricants are an important category in the maritime industry for ensuring the efficiency and durability of an array of vessels that are at work in some of the harshest conditions. Marine lubricants are used to decrease wear between the moving parts and metal surfaces of a ship’s engine, condenser, and other components, and defend against rust and corrosion so that the ships can run smoothly and for longer periods. When it comes to vessels ranging from oil tankers, cargo ships, navy ships, and fishing ships, marine lubricants have an added importance as a safety, performance, and dependable product.
Lubricants used in marine, and their consumption are experiencing significant quantitative and qualitative changes because of several factors such as the globalization and expansion of maritime commerce the usage of seaborne transport to move goods and services around the world, the recent changes in standards concerning the protection of the environment in the seas and the oceans among others. This article discusses details on the global marine lubricants market by evaluating some of the major factors that trigger the industry, including trends as well as challenges of the market in the future.
Market Overview
Marine lubricants are prepared on a special basis, and they are used to overcome the specific demand for marine engines and other instruments used in marine applications. They not only reduce friction, and hence mean wear but at the same time assist in the control of deposit formation, protection of rust and corrosion as well as against failure of equipment. The market can be segmented covering lubricant types including engine oil, hydraulic oil, compressor oil, gear oil, and the like; ship types such as bulk carriers, container ships, oil tankers and further based on region.
The global marine lubricants market has also increased steadily in the past decade mainly due to the projected growth in international sea-borne trade and port development and enhancement of marine-related facilities. Shipbuilding and marine transportation industries in China, Japan, and South Korea are the market drivers given the region is in the Asia-Pacific region. Europe and North America are also important because key ports and factors of the shipping business are situated on these continents.
Marine Lubricants Market Analysis and Key Drivers
An increase in Global Seaborne Trade
Over 80% of import/export cargo is by sea, and this percentage is increasing gradually. Growing global economic activity, especially in Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East export zones requires more efficient and better marine transportation. With a growing tonnage of products transported via sea as a means of transport and a carrier, there is a need to use marine lubricants required by performing ships offering this service.
Growing Emphasis on the Efficiency of Fuel and the Functions of an Engine
Based on past observations of various shipping companies, it has been seen that marine fuel costs constitute one of the largest line items of operating costs. Therefore, efforts are being made to raise standards of engine efficiency and lower the fuel consumption of various types. To realize these goals, high-performance marine lubricants are very essential. It hampers the interaction of momentary surfaces such as between gears or bearings which lessens engine consumption and increases the service duration of machines. Moreover, the growth in refined grades results from the production of oils that enhance fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions as per the environmental policies.
Increased stringency for Environmental Standards
The IMO has laid down tough standards to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from ships that have been categorized as climate polluters. The IMO 2020 regulation which requires a maximum limit on sulfur Emissions of 0.5% has brought change to the maritime industry using low-sulfur fuels also termed bunker oil and other solutions relating to it. Marine lubricants have a key role to play in this shift, by enabling vessels to run smoothly on low-sulfur fuels without suffering engine wear from these new fuels.
Besides sulfur caps, the laws are now aiming at cutting emissions of greenhouse gases, ballast water management, and disposal of wastes in the sea. They make ship owners look for environmentally friendly, bio-degradable marine lubricants so as a result to meet required environmental standards without compromising on efficiency.
Increase in shipbuilding activities.
New orders for new boats, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, have been driving the marine lubricants market. The shipbuilding industry is also a highly concentrated industry with major players hailing from Southeast Asia, especially China, South Korea, and Japan which deliver many new ships each year. With the launch of new ships, there is always a market for superior marine lubricants that can deliver correct performance and standards established by today’s world regarding the marine environment.
The trend toward synthetic and bio-derived lubricants
Mineral oils have been the most used type of lubricant, especially in marine processes for years. Nevertheless, synthetic and bio-based lubricants are preferred more and more because of the improved performance characteristics of these products and regard to environmental considerations. Synthetic lubricants have improved oxidation stability, better heat, cool, and longer oil life, and are appropriate for today’s advanced high-performance marine engines.
Biodegradable lubricants which are made from renewable sources have recently emerged as common options as shipowners search for sustainable products. These lubricants do not harm the environment as they are dischargeable and don’t pose a threat when there is an incident of oil spillage or leak into the ocean. Now, bio-based lubricants are relatively small compared to their total market share and this is poised to grow, especially with growing pressure on sustainability.

As a result of the increased digitization of assets and structures and coping with rising expenditures for maintenance, predictive maintenance has emerged as a solution.
Technological advancement is rapidly getting into the maritime industry and so it is with marine lubricants. The system of program preventive maintenance and reconditioning based on digital sensors and data analysis lets the ship operators track the state of their power plants and oils in real mode. This technology can also identify initial signs of tears or deterioration in the lubricant so that appropriate action can be taken before the operational equipment fails.
Using data from these sensors, operators can reduce lubricant consumption, conserve the lubricant, and also augment fuel consumption rates. Technological advancement is anticipated to catalyze smart lubricant systems since this option enables better control of lubrication intervals and maintenance schedules.
More Demands to Concentrate on Sustainability and Nitrogen Oxides Emissions
Environmental issues remain a trending topic in the global and maritime industry as more efforts are sought for to come up with solutions. Marine lubricant manufacturers are employing their customers in the development of output, which complies with the standard of markets all over the world and has the least negative implications for the natural setting. Special oils that reduce emissions, enable improved fuel consumption and the implementation of additional non-conventional fuels are posing as useful in the strategic quest for green shipping among shipowners.
In addition, new marine lubricants are being created that meet the European Ecolabel which is a standard set for products that have low impacts on the environment. Global sustainability concerns are seen to create new opportunities for development in the marine lubricants market in the future.
In the marine lubricants market system several challenges are known to exist as explained below:
Inability to control Raw Material prices
One of the biggest threats to the overall profitability of marine lubricants is the fluctuating price of the raw materials; base oils and additives that go into the manufacturing of the product. It, therefore, emerged that crude oil price volatility affects the profitability of lubricant manufacturers. Moreover, fluctuations in the supply chain, political relations, and shifting trends in world business relations can put pressure on the basic materials for production which becomes a problem for the industry.
The company must adhere to strict regulatory requirements.
One of the issues of the market is the growing number of regulations concerning emissions and environmental requirements for marine use. They are always under pressure to devise new products that will meet these regulations, not lowering performance. Compliance with regulatory necessity costs research, development, and testing, which can be rather expensive.
Conclusion
The global marine lubricants market has the potential for strong growth in the coming years, supported by growing demand from rising immersed trade, improvement in engine technology, and strict environmental laws. New and emerging marine issues like the transition to low sulfur fuels and the increasing emphasis on fuel efficiency and consumption all point to the continued roles that marine lubricants occupy in the consistent, reliable performance of maritime vessels.
Newcomers, including synthetic and bio-based lubricants, digital tools for condition-based monitoring, and a growing emphasis on environmental responsibility, can be expected to redefine the industry. However, there is always the variable of raw material cost and regulatory issues but there are more opportunities in the marine lubricants market as it has promising growth consistently with innovation and changes in the industry’s requirements.
Therefore, it is rightly expected that the global market of marine lubricants is in the right direction of sustainable growth and technological development and the key players in this industry in the future are ready to capture future opportunities. As modern civilization delegates an increasing number of its logistic requirements to marine transport it follows that the market for high-performance eco-friendly marine lubricants has favorable conditions for development.

17 and 18 for fic writer asks? 💜💜💜
Thank you, friend! 💜💜💜
17. talk about your writing and editing process It usually starts with an outline. I start by making a list of all ideas for the fic, the bullet points sometimes make sense and sometimes they... oh, well, you can see for yourself (the examples listed here are taken from my WIPs): "conversation in the kitchen", "morning smut", "CJ & Abbey talk about the chicken", "Abbey's actually dressing the chicken on TV". Then I type out all sorts of little moments and bits of dialogue which have emerged, fully formed, in my head, but usually exist without context. And then comes the hardest part, contextualizing those random bits and pieces of dialogue. I usually write out of order, so the final phase in my writing process is trying to connect those little scenes into a story. When I'm editing a fic, I just read the whole thing over and over until I'm pleased with the end result.
18. if you keep them, share a deleted sentence or paragraph from a published fic Lmaooooo okay, this is from "Guess You Could Call It Textbook", a missing scene from "20 Hours in America", where I explore how Abbey deals with the sexism of the press and the public. There is a moment in the episode where CJ, Bruno and Sam discuss the "aprons and rolling pins" incident and Sam asks CJ "The First Lady's not a lesbian, is she?" and CJ says "I'll ask her." and the whole scene is just absolutely ridiculous, first because Sam's face and the way he says those words are so, so, soooo funny and because there's a much deeper, uglier subtext of republicans/conservatives using lesbian as an insult for feminists for decades, dating back to the texts of first wave feminists, which just makes me like "why's that an insult lol" but okay. Guess I'm just too much of a childless cat lady to understand the conservatives... Anyway, here comes the deleted paragraph:
“Bruno Gianelli said there was a rally in Wisconsin because you were gay, but I think he was joking.” “Gay as in happy and in a lively mood? No!” “So you’re not gay?” “Well, there was that one time in college…” Abbey trailed off. The look of utter shock on Sam Seaborn’s face made it hard for her to keep a straight face. “I’m joking,” she said incredulously. “I have been married to the President for thirty-five years, and we have three children, what do you think?” “So you're not gay?” Sam asked again. “Get out!"

Hi! What's your opinion on Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Carmel Gat, Alex Lubnov, Ori Danino and Almog Sarusi?
Royal Arctic Line A/S (RAL) or Royal Arctic is a seaborne freight company in Greenland, wholly owned by the Government of Greenland. It was formed in 1993, and is headquartered in Nuuk. History
Royal Arctic Line A/S was spun off as a company separate from the Greenlandic conglomerate KNI in 1993. Like many Greenlandic companies, its operations derive from and carry on the traditions of the earlier Royal Greenland Trading Department. Operations
The company has a monopoly on all sea transport of cargo to, from, and within Greenland. Construction materials account for roughly a quarter of shipping to Greenland; fish makes up roughly half of shipping from Greenland; fish and beverages bottled at Nuuk (principally water and beer) account for most shipping within Greenland.
Royal Arctic operates cargo routes among the Greenland settlements and between Nuuk and Aalborg in Denmark[3] and manages 13 harbors in Greenland as well as the Greenlandic base harbour in Aalborg, which serves as the source for all European shipping to the island. Seaborne traffic from North America goes to Reykjavík aboard Eimskip, whence it is carried to Greenland aboard Royal Arctic.
In 2011, government concessions accounted for 76% of the company's income. The Transport Committee newly formed by the Greenland Home Rule government issued a report stating that liberalisation of the shipping market offers no benefits and the current concession is reasonable. It also began planning with RAL and stakeholders to expand the harbors in Nuuk and Sisimiut. Divisions Linietrafik (Line Traffic)
Royal Arctic Linietrafik operates the company's fleet, currently consisting of ten ships – six container ships and four "settlement ships" – with five more under construction.
The three largest ships – the Naja Arctica (782 Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU)), Nuka Arctica (782 TEU), and Mary Arctica (588 TEU) – are principally used for the Aalborg route. The Irena Arctica (424 TEU), Arina Arctica (283 TEU), and Pajuttaat are used within Greenland and have equipment for unloading in cities without harbors. All these container ships are double-hulled and built with high freeboards and the highest ice ratings: the Mary Arctica has even been chartered for Antarctic service. The settlement ships Angaju Ittuk, Anguteq Ittuk, Aqqaluk Ittuk, and Johanna Kristina are all older and smaller (220–320 m³) and used for supplying the smaller ports. In 2011, the ships had an average on-time rate of 72%.
One of the new ships is considered Mary-class and will have a capacity of 606 TEU. Of the four others, two will have 108-TEU and two will have 360-TEU capacity. National Ceviche Day
If you’ve never tried the citrusy seafood known as ceviche, now’s the time! Just the freshest raw fish, some citrus, and a garnish of cilantro.
For those who are partial to a bit of fresh and delicious seafood on their plates, then a must-try dish is ceviche! Most popular in the Caribbean regions and on the coast of Latin America, ceviche (sometimes spelled cebiche) is a meal that is made from raw, fresh fish that has been cured with lemon or lime juices (or sometimes both) for a tasty, citrusy flavor. Not only that, but the acidity of the lime or lemon actually works to “cook” the fish so there is no need for heat.
Depending on where the ceviche is eaten, it may be found served up with chopped onions, cilantro and a dash of salt. It is often dished out with side dishes of vegetables such as lettuce, avocado and sweet potato, just to name a few.
On National Ceviche Day, it’s time to discover the fishy goodness that is this tasty, seaborn dish!
History of National Ceviche Day
Any good food should certainly get its own day of observance, and this one is no exception. Although it is popular in some parts of the world, it might not be so well-known in other places. However, this day is meant to make sure people can find out exactly what they have been missing out on!
Ceviche, or at least something very similar to it, looks to have been eaten way back 2000 years ago, according to archeological records. In fact, according to some historians, the meal was brought to Peru by the Moorish women of Granada. It started out at the time in the form of a dish that would eventually become what is known today as ceviche.
The United States started serving up this meal in around the 1980s and, as such, it may be found prepared in a number of different ways if it is sought out throughout North America.
Traditionally, ceviche is prepared by marinating fish in a citrus mixture, but there are many different variants of the way it is ultimately presented for consumption. In Ecuador, it might be found to be more soup-like in appearance, whereas in Mexico it can be found served with tortillas. Ceviche is especially loved in Peru, where it is generally considered to be part of the national heritage and is often referred to as their national dish.
How to Celebrate National Ceviche Day
Celebrating ceviche and all the seafood things surrounding it can be a load of fun! Try these ideas or come up with other creative ways to honor the day:
Try Out Ceviche
For those who may have never tried ceviche before, now is the perfect day to try it! Ceviche is commonly found served up in the Caribbean or Latin American restaurants, and sometimes it can be found at Mexican eateries. Call ahead or check online to find out which local restaurants might have ceviche on the menu.
Make Ceviche at Home
For those people who wish to try making their own ceviche at home, with a little time and effort it’s possible to have a delicious and healthy meal. Just be wary that it is necessary to take the normal precautions with the preparation of the raw fish, as would be prudent for any meal that includes raw fish.
As mentioned previously, ceviche can come in all different types, but here’s a basic recipe that comes from the classic Peruvian style.
Peruvian Ceviche Recipe
Start with a pound or two of high-end fish filets, whether choosing halibut, mahi-mahi, Corvina, escholar or another quality fresh fish. Cut the fish into small cubes, place in cold salted water and refrigerate.
Thinly slice one red onion, rub onion slices with salt and run under cold water. Squeeze several limes to create one cup of lime juice.
Rinse the fish, then add to a glass bowl with half of the sliced onions, 1-2 habanero peppers (halved with seeds removed), and 2 sprigs of fresh cilantro. Pour lime juice over the top. Sprinkle with salt and add a few ice cubes to minimize the acidity. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
Remove the cilantro sprigs and hot peppers from the fish mix. Place in serving bowls and salt as desired. Add additional fresh onions to the bowls, along with lettuce leaves, fried sweet potato, fresh boiled corn, popcorn kernels, hot peppers or lime slices.
Invite Friends Over For Ceviche
Once it has been discovered how simple ceviche is–without any actual cooking needed–it will be time to invite friends, family, or neighbors over to enjoy this delightfully fresh, summery dish.

Liquefied Natural Gas Market Dynamics: Insights and Perspectives
Liquefied natural gas, commonly referred to as LNG, is natural gas that has been cooled to liquid form for ease and safety of non-pressurized transportation. At approximately -260 degrees Fahrenheit, LNG takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state. This process, known as liquefaction, allows natural gas to be easily stored and transported over long distances via specially-designed tankers. LNG is odorless, colorless, non-toxic and non-corrosive. The LNG supply chain involves four basic steps: natural gas extraction and processing, liquefaction, transportation, and regasification. Natural gas extracted from fields undergoes processing to remove impurities before being cooled and condensed into liquid form at liquefaction facilities. Tankers then transport cargoes to receiving terminals at destination markets. These terminals regasify LNG back to its gaseous state before entering transmission pipelines for distribution to consumers. Rising Global Demand for Cleaner Energy Demand for cleaner-burning and more environmentally-friendly natural gas is surging worldwide. As more countries move to reduce dependence on coal and increase the share of renewables in their energy mix, LNG has emerged as a strategic transition fuel. Power generation accounts for over half of global natural gas demand growth. Rapid urbanization and industrialization are also fueling energy needs in developing nations. Rising imports of liquefied natural gas have allowed some economies like Japan and South Korea to drastically decrease their reliance on nuclear power following the Fukushima disaster. The convenience and reliability of LNG has made it an attractive option to help meet escalating electricity needs while balancing economic and environmental priorities. The United States Shakes up Global LNG Markets Technological advancements in hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, have unlocked vast reserves of unconventional natural gas trapped in shale rock formations across North America. Coupled with expanded infrastructure for liquefaction and exports, the United States is positioned to dominate worldwide LNG supply growth over the next decade. U.S. LNG exports have increased five-fold since 2016, with new facilities ongoing or planned in Louisiana, Texas and elsewhere. American LNG is disrupting traditional supply patterns and facilitating the emergence of a more liquid and flexible global market. Asian importers like China and India are also increasingly looking beyond traditional suppliers in the Middle East and diversifying their sources to include pipeline gas from Russia as well as seaborne cargoes from the U.S. and elsewhere. Concluding Statement In summary, liquefied natural gas has cemented its role as a rising pillar of world energy commerce. Underpinned by new production sources and greater interconnected infrastructure, international flows of LNG are redefining traditional trade corridors. With its clean-burning attributes and flexibility across application segments, gas and LNG stand well-positioned to enable nations to reconcile energy needs with environmental stewardship over the coming decades. Ongoing sustainability challenges call for proactive solutions. Overall, the future remains bright for LNG to fuel cleaner and more prosperous development worldwide.
