For: seaandstardust By: sharonbelle Fandom: The March Family Letters Words: 1749
“You ready?” Joan asked, looking over at the passenger in her car. “We can wait until tomorrow if you aren’t feeling up to it today. Daisy won’t mind.”
Beth shook her head, taking a deep breath. “I can do this,” she assured Joan, reaching for the door handle. In all honesty, her heart was threatening to beat out of her chest more out of excitement than fear of having to interact with new people.
Joan took the lead, bringing Beth up a well trodden path to a side door of the building. “Here we are!” she announced cheerfully, pushing it open, the bells hanging from the door ringing. In response to the noise, a chorus of barks could be heard from the inside.
“Joan!” An older woman came into the room through another doorway, carrying a big bag of dog food. “You’re just in time! Do you want to take care of lunch while I get your friend’s paperwork all filled out?”
Joan glanced quickly at Beth to make sure that it was okay before nodding her assent. “You know me, Days, always here for the heavy lifting,” she teased, planting a kiss on the woman’s cheek before taking the bag and heaving it over her shoulder and heading toward the kennels.
Daisy wiped off her hands on her jeans and made her way over to the desk to grab the paperwork that she had printed off earlier that morning. “You must be Elizabeth,” she said, smiling warmly at Beth, who just nodded in reply, tongue suddenly tied from being along with a stranger. She then held out her hand, which Beth took hesitantly, surprised by the power behind the woman’s shake. “So what made you want to volunteer at our shelter?” Daisy asked as she shuffled through the papers.
“I just really love animals,” Beth replied softly, smiling. “I think that everyone deserves a good home, but if these dogs and cats can’t find one, I want them to at least be happy.”
Daisy nodded, glancing through the papers. “I see that you were recently hospitalized? Is that going to cause any problems for you with the animals?”
Beth shook her head. “My doctor gave me permission to be around animals again, and cleared me for volunteering here after my sister asked him.”
“That’s good then!” Daisy said with a smile. “That was really the only thing on your application that stood out to me as possibly being an issue. Looks like you’re good to go!” With that, she handed Beth a pen and the final form, pointing at the bottom of it. “Just sign here, and I’ll give you the tour!”
Beth took the pen and signed with her best flourish, standing up and excitedly following Daisy as she walked in the opposite direction of where Joan had gone.
“This is our cat room,” Daisy explained as she opened the door to a small hallway, waiting until Beth closed it behind her to open the door in front of them. “You have to make sure that at least one door is shut at all times, because these kitties are quick, and have been known to try to escape past you.”
She continued to talk, but Beth didn’t hear any of it once she saw the scene in front of her. She was fairly certain that she had died and gone to heaven.
There were cats everywhere. Cats on the cat playset, on cushions, on chairs. So many cats. She learned later that there were only ten cats in the room, the maximum capacity, but at the time it seemed like hundreds.
“… socialized, so petting and cuddling is recommended, although you have to be careful because some aren’t so friendly.” Finally remembering that important information was being given, Beth tuned back in to what Daisy was saying, nodding along as she looked from cat to cat. “Any questions?”
Beth paused for a moment. “What are their names?” she asked finally.
Daisy just laughed and pointed to a chart on the wall. “Color on the tags matches with the color on the chart,” she explained. “But you’ll have plenty of time to get on a first name basis with all of them. There are a couple more rooms of cats, but they’re set up just like this, with access to the run, so I won’t bother showing them to you until later. Now, let me show you Joan’s favorite part of the shelter: the dogs.”
Beth followed her out of the room, glancing back longingly at the cats. The same barking that she had heard when Joan first opened the door started up again when they entered the kennels. There were about thirty dogs there, in kennels with walls on the side and chain link gates facing into the hall. A few of them were still finishing the meal that Joan had delivered, but most were done and at attention by the gates, eager to see the newcomer.
“Now newbies can help walk and take care of dogs, but you have to be accompanied for the first few months,” Daisy explained, trailing off as she noticed the look of awe on the girl’s face. “You know what, kid? How about you go see who we have here. Just make sure that you don’t get too close to any that look afraid or are still eating, or they might snap at you. Their names are on the gates.”
There were dogs the size of a cocker spaniel, and dogs the size of a Saint Bernard. Snowball, Muffy, Gracie, Franklin, Annie. Beth stopped by the cage of each one, receiving kisses from the friendly ones, and giving space to those who needed it. She was down to almost the end of the hall when Joan walked over, finished with the next project that Daisy had set her on.
“Oh, I see you’ve made it to the best dog in the whole place,” she said with a grin, indicating the kennel that Beth had just approached, the name tag saying Frederick Arthur Bhaer II.
Beth looked in, but no dog was there, and she looked at Joan, confused. “The second?”
Joan laughed. “His last owners had quite a complex, but everyone calls him Freddy. He must be out in his run right now. Freddy!” At her call, a dog came slowly padding through the flap that led out to a small outdoor yard.
Beth saw him, and her heart melted. He was an old husky, greying around the eyes, and his tail wagged happily when he saw that he had visitors, walking up to the gate and pushing his nose through the gap, looking hopefully at Joan for a treat.
“Aw, I can’t say no to you, buddy,” Joan said, laughing before lowering her voice conspiratorially. “Just keep it between us, okay?” She handed a small dog treat to Beth, who gently held out the treat to Freddy and giggled when he accidentally nibbled on her fingers on the way to the treat.
Beth continued on her way to visit the rest of the dogs, but thoughts of Freddy stayed in the back of her mind, the soulful eyes and wagging tail.
They couldn’t stay too long because Joan had to meet Laurie for a tutoring session, but Beth left with a heartfelt promise to Daisy to be back soon.
And she was. She visited once or twice a week. Usually one of her sisters dropped her off, but her favorite trips were when she went with Joan and could work with the dogs instead of only the cats, and more specifically get to see Freddy.
When Joan wasn’t there she would still visit him, but she couldn’t take him out for walks, couldn’t see him snapping at falling snowflakes as if he were a young dog. She couldn’t take a little break before returning to him to his kennel and sit on the floor with his head resting in her lap.
She loved all of the animals there, and took care of them, but Freddy truly was her favorite. So when she walked in on Christmas Eve and saw that his name was no longer on the gate, she was frightened.
“Is Freddy okay?” she asked Daisy, concern apparent on her face.
Daisy smiled in reply. “Don’t you worry, little duck,” she replied. “He’s fine. Our Frederick Arthur Baehr II is better than fine, in fact. He just got adopted this morning.”
Beth tried to be happy for Freddy. He was old and had aching bones, and deserved a good, warm home. But that didn’t stop her from missing him, from cuddling each cat a little bit tighter, or from letting a few tears slip out.
She put on a brave face for Joan when she was ready to go, getting into the car and pretending that everything was okay.
On her part, Joan didn’t quite know what to say, so she settled on “Everything will work out” and then was quiet for the rest of the trip home.
Beth was slightly surprised when Joan followed her in, but assumed that she was just there to see Meg. She headed straight for her room, but was stopped at the bottom of the stairs by all three of her sisters, grinning like fools.
“Hey Beth,” Jo said, unable to contain her excitement. “I guess Santa came a little early.” She pointed toward the living room, and Beth had an idea of what the present was, but she couldn’t let herself give in to her hope, her dream.
Until it came true.
Under the tree was Freddy, asleep with a bow on his head. When Beth softly called out his name, he his tail began to thump against the floor, and he opened his eyes.
“We called up Marmee and told her…” Jo kept speaking, but Beth heard none of it, rushing forward to wrap her arms around her dog, her Freddy.
Joan let them have a moment before coming up behind them and kneeling down to pet the old dog. “Told you he was the best dog in the shelter,” she teased, a twinkle in her eye.
Beth laughed, nodding in agreement. “You did.” She paused, thinking for a moment, before reaching over and giving Joan a hug. “Merry Christmas, Joan,” she said shyly, trying to express in her embrace all of her thanks for the shelter, for Freddy, for helping her to find a purpose.
And Joan understood. “Merry Christmas, Beth.”

Hi! So, I'm part of the LBD fandom (I made the LBD finger puppets if you saw those). I'm not really outgoing (I don't often make myself known to the Internet) and I don't really know any people from the fandom, well, I know some but they don't know me. Anyway, I want to talk to people who love LBD and Pemberly Digital but all of you already know each other so I would feel weird joining a chat. Could I stop by for a bit if you're doing one? :)
Hi! I'm Rammi. :) I loved your finger puppets! a list I made of the really active people in the fandom I talk to all the time.
Hope to see you in a hangout or on Twitter sometime soon! If there's anything else I can do to help you feel less weird, let me know.
Rammi :)

Created by @silverowldragon who also tagged me! Thanks! :)
Book: recently finished Not Your Sidekick by C.B. Lee, about a bisexual Asian girl whose parents are superheroes, so she rebels by getting an internship with the local villains, where her crush Abby also works! Currently reading 10 Things I Can See From Here by Carrie Mac, which is about a teenage lesbian with generalized anxiety disorder and a somewhat dysfunctional family, set in Canada. UPDATE: dammit, I just read more and there’s biphobia from the main character, and Goodreads reviews say other bad stuff. So frustrating. DNF.
Author: Laini Taylor (I’ve read two of her books this year, only two more before i’ve read every single thing she’s published!)
Book Series: the stock answer is Harry Potter. I’ve also been reading the Graceling Trilogy by Kristin Cashore this year. 2 down, 1 book to go.
Movie: I just saw Wonder Woman today and I can tell I’m going to be reading fic and reblogging edits for a while, lol. It will all be tagged, though, I promise!
TV show: Supergirl, Jane the Virgin, Wynonna Earp
Miniseries: I don’t think I’m watching any right now. I don’t watch a lot of miniseries. should I be? anyone have any recommendations?
Webseries: still Nothing Much to Do. also Away From it All. And probably before long I’ll be obsessed with Liminal Summer too.
Musical artist: no one right now
Album: I’m obsessed with the original cast recording of the musical “Be More Chill,” it’s just so catchy! And also the OBC of the musical “Come From Away.”
Song: “The Pitiful Children” from Be More Chill is always stuck in my head.

What I'm Reading
I was tagged by @littlejessamckenzie to share a photo/screenshot of the book/s I'm currently reading. Thanks for the tag! :)
I’m gonna tag @bisexual-meme-thief, @seaandstardust, @theboymayor, @sonseulsoleil and @echojar. I’d love to hear what you’re reading!
I'm actually sick with a cold right now so I won't make you look at my exhausted sick face, but here's the book I've spent most of my afternoon in bed reading: Our Own Private Universe by Robin Talley.
I almost didn't read it because I'd heard so many problematic things about it, but I was drawn in because it had the word 'bisexual' ON THE DUST JACKET FLAP. That never happens, and I was just curious to see if there was anything interesting about it at all. I should have trusted the bad reviews. It's a YA romance about 2 bi girls falling in love, but sadly I really feel underwhelmed by the writing and characters and plot. It's just not realistic or fun to read, and I have this gross feeling the whole time that I'm reading a grown woman failing to sound like a teenage narrator here. Also there’s some racism going on here, including a whitewashed cover and a white author writing a black character in a way where I'm just... well, I’m white, so I can’t actually speak on racism with any authority. But it seems like Aki is just a caricature, like there are little things thrown in to “remind you” she’s black, but you just know the whole time the person writing her has no idea what it’s like to be black. And neither do I, but it still makes me very uncomfortable. With all those huge flaws, I'm gonna skip reading any more of Talley's stuff tbh.
If anything, at least there are starting to be enough queer books available now that we can point to good ones and avoid bad ones. That’s some small silver lining, I hope?
#tag games#tag memes#our own private universe#book review#kinda#if you want bi rep read Queens of Geek instead

about me qs
I was tagged by @bumblebeeslies Thanks for the tag! :)
rules: Answer all questions, add one question of your own and then tag as many people as there are questions.
Coke or Pepsi? neither, I don’t drink pop but even if I did it would never be brown pop
Disney or Dreamworks? Disney, of course!
Coffee or tea? Tea
Books or movies? Books
Windows or Mac? Windows. I can’t afford a Mac and even if I could I don’t know how to use one
DC or Marvel? Neither. I don’t like superhero stuff
Xbox or Playstation? Neither, I don’t play video games. I grew up in a house where they weren’t allowed so I never cared about them
Night owl or early riser? I am 100% a night owl. It’s so bad. I wish I was better at going to bed early and getting up early but I am terrible at both
Cards or Chess? Uhh, I’m gonna say cards. I think I’m slightly better at cards, though still not great
Chocolate or vanilla? chocolate
Vans or Converse? neither, I honestly don’t think I’ve ever owned either brand
Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Wars but only because I’ve never seen Star Trek
One episode per week or marathoning? marathoning. you can watch as much as you want and hardly ever have to deal with months-long cliffhangers
Gandalf or Obi-Wan? I don’t care, I don’t like LOTR and I don’t remember anything about Obi-Wan from the one time I’ve seen the star wars movies
Heroes or Villains? heroes, but also this question reminds me of once upon a time and how much i want to scream at the writers that (abuse TW here) all people have shades of grey but spousal abusers (rumple) and rapists (Regina) don’t deserve redemption arcs ugh
John Williams or Hans Zimmer? For sure John Williams. Hedwig’s Theme, man.
Disneyland/Disney World or Six Flags? the only one I’ve been to is Disneyland in California, so that one
Forest or sea? sea
Flying or reading minds? flying
Twin Peaks or Northern Exposure? never seen em! I’ve never even heard of the second one before tbh
Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Harry freakin’ Potter! *starts singing the song from AVPS in my head*
Cake or Pie? cake. Except on Thanksgiving when the answer is pumpkin pie
You are banished to a desert island, which Benedict Cumberbatch character would you choose to take with you? i wouldn’t. I don’t really care about him, I haven’t even seen most of his stuff.
Train or Cruise ship? I take the train to and from school and work every day, so train. Also there’s no way I’d take a cruise ship after the disasters and illnesses and shipwrecks you always hear about with those.
Brian Cox or Neil deGrasse-Tyson? Neil deGrasse-Tyson because I like his voice and I don’t know who Brian Cox is.
Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland? Wizard of Oz for the childhood nostalgia
Fanfiction or fanart? fanfiction
The Hunger Games - Books or movies? Books if I had to pick, but honestly I haven’t cared about THG since high school, sorry.
Be able to see the future or travel into the past? honestly future so I can know exactly when the country is gonna wake up and start imp eachment proceedings. (intentional space because i’m just a little paranoid)
Han Solo or Luke Skywalker? based off the one time I’ve seen each Star Wars movie, I pick Han Solo
Lilacs or sunflowers? sunflowers, they get so big, I’m in awe
Spring or autumn? autumn all the way. I LOVE fall.
Campfire or fireplace? campfires are just so cozy, but artificial fireplaces don’t leave you smelling like smoke, so they both have their benefits.
French fries or onion rings? French fries
Jeff Winger or Troy Barnes? All I can tell you is I’ve never seen whatever TV show these people are from. Is it Community? I’m pretty sure it is. Anyway, no opinion.
And a new addition...
TV comedies or TV prodecural dramas? Personally, I’m trash for procedural dramas. They’re just fun.
I tag @bisexual-meme-thief @seaandstardust @captainswan618 @of-flowers-and-sunshine @this-amaranthine-heart :)
