If you would like my take, I project onto a lot of characters (and have alters of them) and find a lot of ships to be a comforting experience. For example, a major comfort ship of my is scytana and scyker, both of which are easily represented by me and my partner. It allows for some familiarity as I’m still mostly connected to my source, and having someone to see as the friends I once had is a major comfort experience
