Sculpture workshop

Here is the Queen of hearts sculpture I created in a 3 week sculpture workshop! I mainly wanted to play around with facial expressions as I was inspired by Philippe-Faraut who uses facial expressions as a main feature in his work. I chose to create a angry face with her tongue sticking out! This was to portray immaturity as I my interpretation of the Queen of hearts is childish and naive. The images above are the decorated plaster casts. I mostly used shelac and then added gold leaf and/or red ink. I prefer her with just the gold leaf as the face is enough to make the model interesting- I think adding the red ink distracts from her expression.

The photos above show the process of creating the mould. I created it by first moulding clay and then painting 6 layers of liquid latex (The clay doesn't have to be dry) ensuring that each layer is dry before painting the next layer on. Then I made a modroc mould to encase the latex mould which would make sure the latex doesn't distort when it's filled with plaster. I had to re-do the back of the modroc mould as it got stuck on her hair and ears so in the end the Modroc mould was 3 peices instead of two. The first plaster cast broke as I took it apart due to the modroc getting stuck, however I cast a few more after which worked a lot better.

Overall I am happy with the result, especially since this is the first time I've done sculpture before!

London artist Jacky Oliver came into the Strode Art Department this afternoon to give a talk about her practice and recent residencies, commissions and gallery work. Her work can currently been seen as part of the The Muse Project collective show - still on at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton. Then students could sign up for three hands-on creative ‘Pewter Casting’ workshops in the C7 sculpture room. Jacks worked with the students to carve into cuttle fish bones before pouring molten pewter metal into the hollow shapes to create individual casts that the students could take home. Everyone had a great time, with all three workshops over-booked and many students staying on to extend their work and make more casts -  a really creative day and an inspiring series of workshops.

Didn't have time to post anything lately because i was moving everything and setting up my new workshop. Now i finally have a large enough space thats well ventilated where i can build bigger sculptures and work on lots of other things.
