On the corner of May Street I saw a nice little scene. The policeman was taking apart the fighting of a fat hog and a wandering bearded goat. That's all I saw in Narva. Non è stato un martello a rendere le rocce così perfette, ma l’acqua: con la sua dolcezza, la sua danza e il suo suono. Dove la forza può solo distruggere, la gentilezza può scolpire.

Yesterday, I started layering black primer on the second sculpt while the base coats were drying on the first sculpt. Both sculptures and the diorama will have a combination of brush, dry brush, washes, and airbrush. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- #sculpture_art #sculpturework #clayart #claysculpting #supersculpey #polimerclay #creaturedesign #creatureart #design #darkart #darksurrealart #diorama #dioramacreators #art #artwork_in_studio #artwork🎨 #surrealart #monsters #monsterart #claypainting #painting🎨 #conceptartwork #contemporaryartist #contemporaryart #preproduction #detailwork https://www.instagram.com/p/CDHQo0aBLDY/?igshid=1bxc8sg34s7hw

Leaving Switzerland
The land of free public transportation, endless cycle trails, and Alps perpetually on the horizon.
Tumblr media
(Also the land where food is way too expensive and everything closes at 7.)
The Route Since Last Time: Montpellier - Sommieres - Avignon - Bourg Saint Andeol - Valence - Saint Vallier - Lyon - Brangues - Geneva, Switzerland - Lausanne - Bern - Basel
Total Distance: 1440 kilometers / 895 miles
Total Ascent: 8,472 meters / 27,795 feet
Tumblr media
The mountains got more intense the closer I got to Switzerland. For the couple of days leading up to the border, I was making my way along the Rhone River, ascending slowly through a valley lined with snowcapped mountain ridges. But right before the border, it felt like I was climbing straight up for two straight hours. I passed a road sign bearing the name of the small village at the summit, Usinens, and a small Swiss flag. But after I flew down the other side of the mountain, Google told me I was still in France. I’m not sure when I actually crossed over. There was no sign or delineation. At some point I was just in Switzerland, on the road to Geneva.
Tumblr media
It’s been interesting to see the changes in culture as I’ve moved through Switzerland. Around Geneva, French language and culture dominated. Outside Bern, everything became distinctly German.
I’d planned to cover about 50km a day on average, including rest days. But it’s ended up being more like 40 because I’ve lingered longer than I meant to in most major cities. Sometimes that’s meant seeing some incredible sights–in Geneva I went by the UN building and visited the museum next to the CERN laboratory. In Bern I toured the apartment where Einstein developed the theory of relativity. But it’s hard to do much of anything after two or more days of 70-80 miles of cycling, especially with how the mountains have been. I usually crash the night of arrival, spend a day chilling out, and and then dedicate another day to sightseeing.

My most recent sightseeing journey was a Hermann Hesse pilgrimage. His novels followed me through a few major phases of my life, from high school up through my late twenties. So when I realized his house/museum/gravesite was a 3 hour train ride away, I found some discount tickets, locked my bike at a hostel in Basel, and made my way down to Lugano in the south of Switzerland.
Again, the contrast in culture was stark. In Lugano, the language, the food, the architecture were all Italian. And the landscape was stunning. Tree-lined mountains dotted with clusters of villas shot up into the clouds from a lake in the middle of the city. Spring seemed to have already bloomed there, too–the magnolia trees were shedding pink and white petals onto the hilly streets.
Tumblr media
It started raining just as I arrived, so I checked into my hostel, grabbed my free transportation card, and took a bus to the Hesse house. It was up in the mountains, on a winding residential street. I spent the afternoon learning about his life and travels. The woman at the front desk screened a documentary in English for me and then directed me to his gravesite. Amid rows of tombstones stacked with sculpturework, those of Hesse and his wife stood quietly in a corner, just a couple slabs of stone planted in the Earth. When I started walking back to the bus stop, the rain had let up.

Today I’m pretty sure I’ll cross two borders: the Swiss-German and German-French. Things look pretty flat for a while, so I’m going to try to cover a good amount of ground over the next week. The U.K. Is farther away than I’d hoped it’d be at this point.

The basilica of Our Lady of Dolours is a church in Thrissur City, Kerala, India. Belonging to Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic sect local to the Indian state of Kerala that practices using the East Syriac rites and liturgy, the basilica boasts 25,000 square feet (2,300 m2), and the tallest tower reaches a height of 260 feet (79 m), making it the third-tallest church in Asia.
Often referred to locally as “Puthanpalli” (“New Church”), construction began in 1929, in response to the local Christian community splitting due to differing practices in rites and theology; those that switched to practicing the Chaldean Syrian rites gained the original church building, renamed the Mart Mariam Big Church, and those remaining in the Syro-Malabar rite needed a new house of worship. The church’s construction progressed in stages, and though the building was consecrated on 24 November, 1940, work continued for some time afterward.
A particularly fine example of Indo-Gothic architecture, the building is cruciform in layout, with double-storeyed aisles along the nave and transepts, and eleven altars, five on either side of the main one. Possessing three towers and a stout lantern over its central crossing, the twin belfries incorporated in its front, West facade reach a height of 146 ft. (45 m), while its tallest spire is situated at the eastern terminus of the nave, behind the crossing. This tower, named the Bible Tower, completed in 2007, is 260 ft. (79 m) tall, making it both the tallest church-tower in India and the tallest point in Thrissur. Inside are multiple viewing platforms, and at the tallest point one can view the entire city below.
Decoration is restrained throughout the interior of the church, predominantly white with extensive use of trimming in accent colors, but the altars and central crossing are elaborately decorated, and feature fine specimens of murals and sculpturework.
