1965 scraps pt 1
Collection: Scraps
Year: 1965
Characters: Timothy Turner, Annette Thompson
Content Warnings: none
Rating: K
Style: chat fic
Summary: original ideas for some stuff that we’ve changed since and reworked. Kinda like bloopers?
Annie’s first appearance
A girl on one of his classes ends up pregnant and her boyfriend demands she get rid of it. Tim knows the guy more than he does her. But when he hears about it, he goes straight to Shelagh for advice
And then talks to the girl about it. Telling her she has options, his mum could help
and going to sit with her, when the news gets out and everyone is studiously avoiding her eye
He doesn’t let anyone insult her, not on his watch
Others start to make comments about how it’s probably really his. That they were together behind her (now ex) boyfriend’s back
It doesn’t phase him much at all, once she’s told him it’s alright, it’s no worse than anything else they’re saying, at least he’s nice
He doesn’t understand how other boys can be so horrible towards girls
Especially girls as nice as her.
Early Bits
I’m still imagining this army of women turning up to Tim’s graduation
plus a policeman
And his best friend and her little boy. She couldn’t finish school, didn’t have anyone to help with the baby.
She ended up in Poplar and was immediately enveloped into the Nonnatus family
Her little boy adores Time
Has called Tim daddy a few times, doesn’t know better really
Tim would like almost nothing more than to be his dad
His best friend tells him he’s already that and more
He’s offered to marry her in the past.
But she turns him down. Doesn’t want to be his charity case.
She’s not though. He can see himself with someone like her. Kind, educated
She does say yes eventually. Her son is maybe 5 or 6. Adores Tim.. She spends more time with Tim than any other man. And none of the men she’s gone on dates with can compare to him really
She’s been expecting the kind of romance they talk about, the butterflies and the rollercoaster
Tim is … stable. Safe. It’s a quiet sort of love
Much like his parents
Forged from long nights and trips to the clinic and Christmas in Poplar when her parents still aren’t sure
And it feels like home
She goes out on dates, even spends a few nights, and just… finds herself wanting to be home with him
Listening to him play, or moan about the latest Lancer article
____
oh GOD
remember when we talked about Tim at college?
like 70% of why girls like him is he can cook and he does the washing up after and puts their aprons on to do it
his best friend, the girl who got knocked up and had to drop out
is always amused when he tells her about the girls who are always so surprised he can cook
that’s definitely what Tim did
his list of things to do in a crisis
a) make tea 2) cook 3) call Mum
and it makes Shelagh so proud of him
Tim always puts her apron on
because it’s white and pink and has frills and it makes her laugh
he does it just to make her laugh
because she doesn’t do it enough
the first time he did it because you just do, right? she was devastated and he was focused on trying to help and he always put aprons on to cook at home
it was hanging on the door where Shelagh keeps her and it was just … instinct
but then it made her laugh for the first time in like a week
Annie’s Name
Ellen?
something with a nickname that only her parents and tim call her
Tim does it accidentally the first time, and she doesn’t tell him not to
Elizabeth and Betty?
Elizabeth and Lizzy?
Betty sounds like an old lady
True
that sounds good
or Annette and he calls her Annie
I prefer Elizabeth but either is good
Kenneth sounds good enough
like he could be a good guy Kenny
but he’s Ken or Kenneth
and is a fucking douche
Tim has gotten into arguments with him before, the way he talks about women and the staff and … everyone, really
and when he finds out that he’s not even going to acknowledge the fact that Annette is having his kid
he straight up punches him in the face
which is when everyone is like, omg it’s Tim’s!!
and Tim is like *shrugs*
he doesn’t care if people think that
Patrick gets a letter home from the Dean and Shelagh is like, that’s my boy
they’re “disappointed” in him
but Shelagh sends him extra snacks in his next care package
and Patrick slips him a bit of extra cash too
they’re both like, we did good

The Custodians
The Custodian’s an Introduction
Times are tough, but aren’t they always? I can’t remember when life was ever easy, where the universe allowed me one moment to catch my breath. A mother who never cared, a father who lost himself to his demons, the Darkness was everywhere. I was feeling thankful, as I slopped fresh water across the lunchroom, swirling figure eights repetitively. Happy to drown it all out and just mop, there was only the suds, only the sloshing sponge, squelching water, reflecting the fluorescent lights. Above all, I loved the solitude, the quiet hum of nothing, it was completely euphoric.
EnvivoClean tended to attract a certain type of person with their standards, but there were a couple who made it worthwhile. Most of this crowd acted like they were in high school, concerning themselves with petty and irrelevant squabbles that don’t even matter. No one tells you the whole segregated cliches didn’t disappear once you graduated, you just traded it for another corporate triangle ruled by popularity. My personality didn’t exactly scream customer service, which is why I love this job so much, the independence and the separation from the human race... I’m not saying that every single person out there is bad, but most of them suck and will do what people always do, rip your heart out bleeding and broken. Diagnosed with chronic insomnia I always ran on invisible fumes. It takes a lot for me to get burned out.
I’ve seen my share of weird things here at Brick Elementary, but recently things have been getting extra crazy. Bats flying during the day instead of at night throwing their natural patterns out of whack. A balance was shifting, everyone could feel it. It wasn’t just the pandemic, the unpredictable mutations and the new strains that popped up everyday, something sinister was behind it all, I’m sure of it.
When it first hit, I was numb, nobody had seen anything like this before. First it came on like the common cold, then after twelve days of pure agony and near asphyxiation, the darkest parts of you take over and become reality, there's no more hiding, the Darkness consumes you. First she was known Covid-19 and then her name changed to Covid-Black, referring to the blood that rots in your veins when infected and runs black instead of red. Doctor’s can’t explain or make sense of it. This virus is a mystery, almost mystical, it couldn’t be rationalized.
A few nights back I was rummaging through lost storage in the attic, and found this strange volume, in an even stranger language. There was only one word in English, Colloqúgarou. Through extensive research, because I’m a nerd and have no life, I was able to find a translation. In modern tongue, it meant Darkening, to be darkened or corrupted. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was any connection? The hoops I had to jump through just to translate one word, the internet never heard of it, no books mentioned it anywhere, just this crazy old man with starling eyes, a white I'll never forget. He warned me to be careful tonight, a bad moon was rising. In my heart his words carried weight, even though he did seem slightly unhinged.
“Hello Annie, how are you today?” Beth was sporting wild, frizzy hair braided in a cute fishtail, with the most obnoxious glasses ever conceived. It wasn’t her fault of course, being blind was never a choice.
“Eh, just as good as ever,” flinging my crimson stained hair over my shoulder, I placed a freckled hand across my hips. The one thing I hated doing in these conditions now, was wearing face masks, the itch that only seemed to happen when it stretched across my face was absolutely unbearable.
“I swear, the level of laziness in this building is infuriating!” Even when she was mad, Elizabeth had a knack for saying everything in a perky, high pitched tone, forever wide-eyed.
“What can you do?”
“Oh yeah, there was a complaint about the boiler room, do you mind checking it out, I have my hands full here,” snapping on fresh rubber gloves and wielding a plunger like the ultimate weapon, she took a deep breath and walked into the boys bathroom wreaking something awful.
All of my life, at least as far back as I can remember I’ve hated my body. I’m sure the media is to blame or maybe it was the absence of any real parental figures to tell me all the things a little girl needs to hear. Everything about me is too small, too understated. I yearned for thicker hair, plumper lips, a bigger bra size. Maybe I’ll just pack up and leave. This next paycheck could buy me a one way ticket to Hawaii and I could set sail and leave Belleville behind and never look back. What is keeping me here anyway?
Nothing. No one would miss me, except maybe Beth, but she has a kid of her own, her own life to live. Maybe it was time I lived mine. Walking through a large empty gymnasium, just before the break room was an ominous looking stairwell, leading down to the basement.
“God, this place gives me the creeps…” What was it down here that revolted me so? As my sneakers scrapped against the dark, concrete steps my heart raced a little.
It was natural I suppose, this building was over 150 years old, that's a lot of history. With so many different human impressions there was bound to be some residue left behind. Venturing deeper into the belly of the beast, I could feel every hair on my arms stand up, possibly warning of something below. Finally reaching the bottom, it was pitch black, swallowed in blindness. I had to feel my way to the light fixture, but the switch was dead. How strange, could it be faulty wiring? Before I was able to brainstorm my next move, the door at the top of the stairs slammed shut locking me in, possibly indefinitely.
“Ok. Okay, I’m stuck in here, no one is coming in for hours and the big bad wolf might be down here with me. No problem, we all have to die someday, right?” Suddenly remembering the flashlight attached to my belt loop, a small swell of relief fell over me like a pleasing waterfall. Unclasping the clip, I firmly clicked on my only beacon of light, partly feeling like an involuntary character in a cheesy horror flick. Rest assured, there were no naked bimbos here, I do possess at least a microcosm of common sense.
The first thing my bright, white light revealed was just another broken down piece of equipment, EnvivoClean apparently couldn’t even be bothered to keep functional tools on site. None of this of course was surprising, around here you just worked with what you had and hoped it didn’t break down, cause who knew when it would be replaced.
“Poor guy, you were much too young, just sitting here gathering dust…” Chuckling to myself as I grazed the peeling tape connecting the red backpack vacuum, I heard a rustling up ahead in the shadows.
Quickly flicking my wrist I could see a strange envelope sitting alone but ebbing with a peculiar energy. Inching closer, looking around nervously, I picked up a letter addressed to me personally.
“Um, this isn't’ weird or anything.”
Concerning Annie Mctavish,
1,000 years ago a great crime was committed, one unknown to the Children of Earth. Because of this obscenity a Darkness ascended to all the realms as tiny spores, which grew as we did in corruption.
Do you have what it takes, Annie? Would you like to be a part of something much bigger than yourself? The Custodian’s are more than just cleaners, but purgers of the first dirt, the supernatural scum that clogs the plumbing mortal eyes can’t penetrate. Will you lead us into a new era and fight in the coming war, or run away in search of what has been waiting here for you the whole time?
Only a true Custodian can see what lies beyond. If you’re ready to embark on the quest of a lifetime, a purpose, then sign below and open the door, we will be waiting.
Annie Mctavish_____ : Crew lead of The Custodian’s
I didn’t hesitate, I couldn’t explain it or make sense of it, but this was real, it was happening. I’d book my psychiatric hospital stay later, but first I had to satisfy my curiosity. After I finished signing my name a door literally appeared, Tim Burton style.
“What is happening?”
Walking closer to the pulsing doorway, the copper door knob felt warm against my hand, vibrating almost coming alive. What was waiting for me beyond? As the latch broke free from the strike plate, slowly creaking open, any doubts that I had were evaporated just as quickly. There are no words for what came next…

New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: REWIND REVIEW: Toy Story 4
(Image courtesy of Walt Disney and Pixar via Walt Disney Media File)
For an occasional new segment, Every Movie Has a Lesson will cover upcoming home media releases combining an “overdue” or “rewind” film review, complete with life lessons, and an unboxed look at special features.
TOY STORY 4
After reopening the franchise and scoring at the summer box office Toy Story 4 arrives on October 8th. Pixar releases are always top-notch in the goodies department and this new 3-disc set offers plenty of treats. Completists, you’re going to want this disc, at least until some writer gets the idea to dust off these toys for an equally unnecessary fifth installment.
LATE HOMEWORK EXCUSE:
I should rename this section from “Late Homework Excuse” to “Inciting a School Riot” for my participation with the June release of Toy Story 4. I saw the film early for press, covered a fun family event at Navy Pier, and was very unimpressed by the final product. My review was one of the initial wave of four that broke the Rotten Tomatoes perfect 100% Tomatometer score for the movie. The trolling comments and death threats followed and I wrote about that experience. I didn’t want to be that guy, but I just couldn’t call this sequel worthwhile trying to follow the near-perfection of Toy Story 3. I spelled out my stance to my peers as well with podcast appearances on “Kicking the Seat” and “You’ll Probably Agree.”
ANTICIPATORY SET AND PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
A few years have passed since our core corps of toys were passed on to hazel-green-eyed Bonnie from the college-bound Andy. The toddler is now an anxious little girl entering kindergarten after starting to show favor at home towards other playtime favorites than our stalwart cowboy Woody (Tom Hanks). Even on the dust bunny closet sidelines, the vocal sheriff and leader still sees Bonnie’s happiness as his chief duty. He sneaks into Bonnie’s backpack for orientation day to be a familiar face and watches her having no luck in making friends or feeling positive.
Scavenging and sneaking some scraps and art supplies to Bonnie, Woody watches her create a makeshift little character out of a spork, pipe cleaner, stick-on shaky eyes, and other craft materials. With connection and accomplishment, Bonnie names him Forky and the sprinkle of loveable alchemy that makes Forky a toy to her brings him to life. The little junker (Tony Hale) becomes Bonnie’s favorite comfort but sentiently believes he’s still trash, a transition of character growth that will come from Woody’s teaching and leadership since the days of Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen).
LESSON #1: INTERPRET YOUR INNER VOICE — The first of many possible takeaway chestnuts for the target demographic showing up in droves for this movie is a message on conscience. Various characters in the movie, between pull-strings and heartstrings, duel with literal and figurative forms of their inner voice and how best to follow it or not. Good, bad, and questionable choices are made across the board for younger audiences to see as cautionary examples. This lesson counts as mildly beneficial in the worthwhile department.
All this built-up confidence and protection for Bonnie falls into peril when Forky gets lost on a family road trip to end the summer. Woody goes after him while Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the others hold down the family RV and stall Bonnie’s parents. Woody and Forky become sidetracked by the reemergence of his old flame Bo Peep (Annie Potts) who has found a thriving new life as a “lost” toy living independently on her own. Their reunion and pursuit intersects with the forgotten toys of an antique store led by Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks), an unwanted pull-string doll with a broken voice box and a gang of extremely creepy slick-haired suits at her disposal, who have taken Forky captive.
MY TAKE:
It could be the first movie, fourth movie, or the 17th of something really extensive, a beneficial purpose needs to be present beyond the business end of selling tickets and what not. For each movie or chapter at hand, one has to consider if there is a worthwhile story to tell, one that can justify this new effort being a true necessity. The key word there is worthwhile. To more specifically judge a sequel in that regard, one has to look where it came from and where it is going. Toy Story 4 indeed attempts to advance characters and chooses trajectories, but then look backward and forward and ask about value and placement. Despite the immense talent shining from the recording studio and the animation workshop, the traits and choices of Toy Story 4 lack being worthwhile.
LESSON #2: THE SYNONYMS OF “WORTHWHILE” — Dissect this important adjective further with its synonyms that offer a range of its possible connotations as a description. This review will feature five from worthwhile’s Thesaurus.com entry: advantageous, beneficial, constructive, justifiable, and valuable. All five can be applied to this film.
Advantageous and valuable, in the lucrative sense, are easy because the braintrust of Pixar has been tempted for the better part of a decade to re-open Toy Story after many initially ruled it out following the excellence of Toy Story 3. Audience interest and earning potential has not faded where this was bound to happen at some point. Now it’s here and it’s about earning justifiable inclusion and existence.
LESSON #3: BEING LOST VERSUS BEING FREE — In unison with Lesson #1, Disney has always had a tendency to over-highlight their chosen morals and themes. The “lost” fear here in Toy Story 4 is the first of two teachable concepts and plot ingredients that are beaten to death, even by Mouse House standards. Much fluster and bluster is expressed for avoiding becoming lost, helping the lost, and/or getting over something lost. All the while, and very true to the human condition paralleled through these cherished toys, there is a potential sunny freedom possible in being unbound that seeps in clouding motivations and futures. Still, it’s an overplayed point.
Circle back to purpose. The first Toy Story was groundbreaking and its stellar sequel strengthened and expanded its world-building beautifully. The keenly nostalgic third film wisely and perfectly brought everyone and everything further to a mature, impactful, and fitting conclusion. Continuing a journey that had an ending for a questionable transition such as this, Toy Story 4 does not match or exceed where it came from, not when repetitiveness and disconnection reign.
Eight creators, ranging from departed Pixar chief John Lasseter to the clever Celeste and Jesse Forever writing team of Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, are credited with this hodgepodge story ineffectively narrowed by the credited screenwriters of Pixar vet Andrew Stanton and new voice first-timer Stephany Folsom. This feels like eight or more ideas that all distract and tangle each other up to failing points. Because of stature and importance, it is difficult to positively describe the result as constructive. Unnecessary is a very tempting label, one that is probably too strong, but it is very close.
Both within the Toy Story franchise and beyond in other family films, we’ve seen the self-urgent dalliances and pitfalls of a manic need-to-get-back-home adventure endless times now. As the fourth film following what was serene closure, this counts as unjustified and even misguided. Cutely twitchy as he is, Forky is no better than a mini MacGuffin to force action and the mad cap spins become excessive by the time the movie culminates in a rehash Finding Dory’s vehicular takeover action finale. Likewise in the opposite direction, the Gabby Gabby tangent comprising the movie’s meaty middle is long-winded and ineffectual, even with a redemptive ending we can see coming.
The curveballs and new guest characters, ranging from a motorcycle stuntman action figure (Keanu Reeves) and carnival prize pair of stuffed animals (Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele) and a few others, are certainly cute thanks to their casting personalities, but paper thin as merely and predominantly additions of comic relief. Even with a semi-exciting pre-credits rescue sequence revealing Bo Peep’s fate between the events of Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, the swelling and positive female empowerment of the returning shepherdess that was an afterthought before this movie takes away from the established core on the sidelines like Buzz, Jessie, and more who carry more lasting care. For example, had this been applied to Jessie or if the entire movie was more Toy Story 2.5 instead of a final one unwinding the catharsis of Toy Story 3, this all might have played better for justification and continuance.
Let’s not kid ourselves. Of course, all the talent in the world is here. The movie looks and sounds like a billion bucks. That said, story and purpose matter more than prowess at this point. Throughout this entire series, this has always been about the over-dramatic Woody correcting a personal flaw first and anything else second. His nobility to always be there is incredibly honorable. All arcs lead to him and Toy Story 4 is truly a unique and daring transition point for that character. However, it is elevated, again, at the expense of his partner Buzz and the rest of the toys who once hand-in-hand bonded with shared fates. Tom Hanks can carry that moment, but the punch, the famed “Pixar Punch” this writer and website has long touted and celebrated, misses in a way that may perplex younger children and raise an eyebrow in the escorting adults asking why this matters.
LESSON #4: KNOWING TIMELINESS — The progression of Woody is what brings the second simplistic and prescriptive nugget over-hammered by Toy Story 4. Implored loudly in some moments and reflecting softly in others, the lament of knowing it’s time, knowing your time, or being ready for either state is overflowing in every direction towards Woody. It’s a high hurdle for the plastic protector and apparently one for the filmmakers themselves too who didn’t know when or how to leave this all be.
2 STARS
EXTRA CREDIT:
In an improvement over the Disney’s recent Marvel Cinematic Universe disc releases, the folks at Pixar double the batch. The Blu-ray/DVD/Digital package you will find on the store shelves comes with a third disc entirely dedicated to more bonus features. The additions, while nothing overly long for deep Peter Jackson-level examination, are handsome enough to be a keeper.
The first bonus selections come on the main disc housing the feature film. The main piece is the full-length audio commentary. Director Josh Cooley is joined by producer Mark Neilsen. With typical Pixar pluck, 100% of the discussion is showering positives with very little critique. They open with the biggest question all of us had when hearing about this fourth adventure: WHY. The short and curt answer is “we had more story to tell.” Much of that assumed position of decision-making authority comes from Neilsen, spoken like a producer with his bankroll on the line. Often, Cooley is serving softballs and tossing bouquets like a director trying to impress the guy sitting next to him that signs his checks,
After the prerequisite promotional trailers (one for Pixar’s Onward and, of course, Frozen 2), the other special features on the main disc are a pair of easy featurettes. “Bo Rebooted” proudly highlights the creative women (yes, women, there’s not a man in the picture) behind the development and performance of the reintroduced Bo Peep character. Actress Annie Potts and the various animators speak on her redesign, agency, and new womanly independence. It’s an outstanding addition here. The second one is easy nostalgia entitled “Toy Stories.” Cast members and creators alike wax poetically about their favorite toys and shared life experiences with them. It’s touching, but still quite short.
Over on bonus disc, the top carnival prize is the collection of “deleted scenes.” I put that usual term in quotes because they are presented here in unfinished storyboard animatic form. Introduced each time by Josh Cooley, most are fairly small shavings or shifts from existing scenes. The boldest one is the alternate ending to the movie entitled “She’s the One.” It’s an enormous departure from the final cut and maybe even one some (including this writer) find to be better. That is MUST SEE!
Behind that, the usual pieces and parts are here between a repeat of the trailers, a posedown reel for app/game marketing, few included promos from other countries, and some animated set flyovers that would make for a nice screensaver if we all still used those. The Toy Story series has always had a “Toy Box” roll call of little genesis vignettes for each of the new characters with the voice actors and creators. The likes of Forky (Tony Hale), Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves), and Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) get the most time out of the 13-minute collection. Keanu’s is absolutely aces. You would gladly watch 13 minutes on each character if you could, but something is better than nothing.
The cherry on top there is an all-too-short little retrospective of the bond between Woody and Buzz. Three-and-a-half minutes is not enough time to encapsulate their journey. Oddly, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen never share interview time for this feature. The editing compiles parts from their packaged testimonial sessions. The impact and interest would have been far greater to put the two stars together and see the human chemistry match the animated stuff (unless, gasp, they don’t have any), especially if this is their last collaboration.
The most interesting bonus feature on this disc from a technical standpoint is the “Anatomy of a Scene: Playground” that runs nine-and-a-half minutes. Devoid of talking head stars, supervisors and animation specialists walk viewers through the climactic scene where Woody reunites with Bo Beep for the first time and their ensuing escape. The reactions and insights of the artists are excellent. They really go into the savvy technical details (and easter eggs) that go into this one scene, let alone the many that comprise the entire film.
The last and most unique bonus feature is a hammy segment called “Let’s Ride with Ally Maki.” The voice of policewoman Giggle McDimples, the prolific actress engages in a scripted pinball tour behind-the-scenes of what it takes to get from the microphone to the screen. This quick piece highlights the mountain of repetitive data collection and work from the dialogue room (script supervisor, director, head of story, actors, and recording engineers), editing room, and creative offices. Both informative and humorous, this feature is a nice take on the length and volume of the recording arm of the animated process.

Million Dollar Baby film
Million Dollar Baby streaming
Million Dollar Baby frasi
Ecco qualche esempio:
Mo cuishle significa mio tesoro. Mio sangue. (Frankie Dunn)
Chiunque al mondo può perdere un incontro.
Non voglio altri allenatori, capo. Io voglio lei. (Maggie Fitzgerald)
(Scrap)
Million Dollar Baby storia vera
Million Dollar Baby cast

Finding Janie
Collection: Turner Family, Janie
Year: 1967
Characters: Shelagh Turner, Janie Thompson
Content Warnings: Allusions to abuse, nothing definite, nothing described
Rating: K+
Style: Prose
Summary: The first time Shelagh went to the church that Annie’s family attended, she had only wanted to scope it out and get eyes on Janie.
The second time Shelagh went to the church that Annie's family attended, she sought Janie out. Tried to make it not seem like she was looking for her though. Her opportunity came when she saw Janie go to the ladies room, and she slipped in after her. Next to the sink in the small church restroom, Shelagh handed Janie a piece of paper folded over a photograph of Annie, Daniel, and Tim.
"Jane," Shelagh keeps her voice quiet "My name is Shelagh Turner, your sister Annie is marrying my son Tim."
Janie looks at the paper and then back up at Shelagh. "She's okay?" Her voice is equally quiet.
Shelagh nods. "She is. As is your nephew Daniel."
Janie opens her mouth but no words come out right away. "My nephew?"
Shelagh can feel her heartbreak and the rage at Annie's parents growing.
"Your nephew." Shelagh points him out on the photograph. "They're both healthy and strong." Shelagh changes the subject to something inane about the church flowers when someone comes into the wash room and then turns to Janie again. "Annie wanted me to tell you they're okay. I can keep meeting you, if you like? Your parents don't have to know."
Janie looks Shelagh up and down. A small, slight woman whose nonetheless sure of herself, her shoulders straight and her head up, a kind smile (not that that's indicative of anything much). Shelagh chose sensible shoes and a sensible handbag and dug out one of her older, more conservative suit set. "Please," she replies, heart thumping almost painfully hard.
Shelagh reaches out and squeezes Janie's arm. "I should get going. I'll see you again next week?" Janie nods, "thank you." Her heart is still beating fast. Shelagh leaves the wash room and Janie stuffs the note and photograph into her own bag, knowing that she won't have a chance to read it until she's home.
George makes a comment about how long it took Janie in the bathroom, but she ignores him. Just wanting to get home and read the letter from Annie.
Janie goes straight upstairs when she gets home and into the bathroom, the only room in the house with a functional lock (apart from George's study, which she is never setting foot in) and hopes they'll take it to assume she has an upset stomach or "woman's problems" or whatever. She sits down on the toilet to read the letter and properly study the photograph.
Annie is smiling and Tim is leaning in to the photo to peer at the baby, and the little boy in their arms looks round cheeked and pink and happy. The letter is general, a little stilted - she hopes Janie is well, and she had a good birthday and Christmas, some information about Daniel; how much he weighed when he was born, his favourite things and words, gives her the wedding date.
Janie can see in the letter that Annie is nervous, and she wishes she could see her sister and hug her and meet her nephew. Tears fill her eyes as she looks at the photo longer. She misses Annie so much.
During family dinner that night, Shelagh tells Annie about seeing Janie, and that she passed on the letter.
"She seemed so frightened to take it." Shelagh tells her, worrying about the young girl.
"Our father has probably filled her head with all sorts of horrible things about me." Annie sighs.
"But she wants to continue hearing from you. And that's a start."
Annie is so relieved that Janie wants to keep hearing from her. When they finish dinner Annie goes up to her room and curls up, trying to think of something to write back to her with little information. Eventually she settles for telling a story about something Danny did the day before that made her laugh, a little bit about how Tim's studies are going, the practice and clinic.
Shelagh writes Janie her own letter before she goes to bed, gives the young girl their home number and address and the bus route to Poplar from the church. Just in case.
Janie,
I can't tell you how much I have missed you. Thank you for not sending Shelagh back with my letter, when I gave it to her, I wasn't sure if you even wanted to hear from me. Now that I have the chance, I don't even know what to tell you.
Daniel just hit nine months, he's trying to crawl and almost has it down, but more often than not he ends up scooting backwards instead of forward. I wish you could meet him. He truly is the light of my life. And Tim, I wouldn't be here without him.
I don't want to make this too long, I know you'll have to hide it. I'll send more each week with Shelagh. And photos. Tim loves taking photographs and Danny is such a little ham.
~Annie
The letter makes Janie cry, trying to keep quiet in the toilet and then later on, when she's in her bedroom and trying not to let anyone hear her sobs. She writes back to her, on whatever scrap of paper she could find, torn out of one of her notebooks, a bit of a mess because she's too scared to turn on the light and is using the street light outside.
Hello Annie I am glad you hear you're safe. I have missed you too, of course I wouldn't send Mrs Turner away. I have put the picture somewhere very safe.
I hope I get to see him crawl one day. I hope Tim is as kind as he looks in the photographs. I don't remember him very much but he seemed nice. I would like to see more photographs.
Janie.
Their notes continue back and forth, each week getting longer, more details being shared. Annie plans Daniel's first birthday party for a Sunday and Shelagh invites Janie to her home for lunch. Ruth and George are thrilled that such a nice lady from the church has taken an interest in Janie. They allow her to go and just ask that she's home in time for dinner.
Patrick comes one week. Shelagh is busy Called out to attend as an emergency, they need another midwife. And Shelagh wanted to make sure that Janie would get her letter and photos. So she asked Patrick to go in her stead. Patrick feels so awkward at church things but he hangs out in the back and Janie recognizes him from pictures. He doesn't say anything to her directly but shakes the hymnal at her knowingly like and sticks Annie's letter in it.
From afar, their parents think it's wonderful that this lady from the church is taking her under her wing, even if she doesn't come to church every week. This very well dressed, well spoken, educated woman. Perhaps she is still trying to settle with a parish? There are worse sins. They don't know she's a nun who got charmed out of her habit. Shelagh would tell them and cherish the look on their faces but this is more important than a momentary thrill.

Collection: Tim and Annie
Year: 1967
Characters: Timothy Turner, Annette Thompson
Content Warnings: mention of violence
Rating: K+
Style: chat fic
Summary: just some ideas that fit into the timeline for early 1967 but aren’t fleshed out. But they are referenced later.
I have just randomly headcanoned that Tim fights like Shelagh would. Lower average centre of gravity, probably less brute strength, and an intimate knowledge of the weak and or squishy points. Definitely goes for the weak and squishy bits first. Knows that he’ll end up breaking his hand if he punches him in the face, that’s why he goes for the gut and then the knee to the face. He’s seen enough scuffles at home to have a basic idea of what to do. And has heard Shelagh mutter under breath about how punching in the face just leads to bruised hands. Headcanon is that Shelagh was a bit of a tomboy as a child and learned how to fight without taking too much damage. Mostly because people underestimated her.
It won’t hurt his hands, it will incapacitate Kenneth so he can use his knee, hard against slightly less hard. Oh man, yes, Shelagh is definitely constantly muttering about how poor punching technique leads to such terrible injuries. From person experience. She got into a lot of scraps which Tim is … actually not that surprised by. Shelagh absolutely taught him how to throw a proper punch. And where to throw it. And that punching isn’t always the best idea.
Annie losing friends
So many of her friends drop her after word gets around that she’s pregnant.
And….not much changes. She was mostly spending her free time with Tim.
She didn’t really have any friends that she would have considered good or close, but it would have been nice
if maybe one or two would still /talk/ to her.
If there were people she could have nodded to in the hallway, or sat with at lunch, or whatever. Asked for class notes from. And now total strangers start avoiding her and whispering behind their hands.
I think that’s when she realises how much of a friend Tim actually *is* and how well they get on. When everyone drops her and she’s sad/mad about it, but her day to day life … doesn’t really change? Tim’s still there.
She ends up spending even more time with Tim than before. In the little bit of time between telling Kenneth and then her parents and even more after.
Annie is told she can’t go back to school
It’s not long after that that Annette is told she can’t continue at school
Maybe that’s Kenneth’s “revenge”
He tells the board she’s pregnant
And not getting married
And the damage is does to their reputation etc
And practically living with a man
Annette is so mad
So is Tim
he petitions the school on her behalf but they just don’t want to kow
Kenneth’s Daddy knows people etc etc
It pisses Tim off to no end
He’s so angry. That they even treat young women like this. That its *only* the women who get treated like this. And that fucking Kenneth gets away scot free despite the bruises on both of them
