I believe I am onto something interesting with this. I am actually quite excited.
This is not stranded knitting, but slip stitches. In my opinion it is easier to knit with many colours using slip stitches rather that stranded knitting, because I get to knit with only one yarn at a time. And slip stitches create such interesting textures.
This is going to be my contribution to scrapalong 2025, even if it is not strictly scrappy, only partly scrappy. It is going to be socks.

Musselburgh Hat
Playing around with both ends of my scrappy Musselburgh hat before I shorten it to a wearable length. Pulled all the way down, I appear to have been detained by the Stockinette Chapter of The Knitting Craftivists (interesting image). I almost like the massively wide brim but it hides the Trans Pride stripes, and I want to be a visible ally. The bag cap has a kind of Renaissance or liberty cap look, but it's not exactly a 21st century look. Onward!

Yesterday's progress on my scrappy yarn cozies! For the first one I just picked colors without much thought, on the second one I'm trying helical knitting so I don't have all the ends to weave in.

Some shots of the Eternal WIP (the second) and some length matching of all the 4-ply bits. To summarise the picture below, from left to right we have leftovers from projects such as: the Big Knit hats, socks, the Penrose blanket (half of the ends that have been eliminated so far) and the recent hyperfixation: card weaving.
Here’s hoping I will add these all into the rug before the end of ScrapAlong2025

Musselburgh Hat
Finished! Daylight was almost gone, so I'll take more/better photos of my scrappy Musselburgh hat another day. Close to the end, a stitch marker sprang off the needle (as they do) and into the hat. I fished it out, but thought a bit and dropped it in again. A lot of people are feeling isolated and invisible these days, so it's my odd little gesture of acknowledgment and keeping them in mind regardless of whether they're in view.

Musselburgh Hat
Tumblr media
My scrappy Musselburgh hat is back on the needles. I made it several inches too long the first time, so I’m shortening it now. I only have to knit the Trans Pride stripes and crown decreases as before. Easy peasy. Also, the yarn I removed (the half hidden ball in the photo) is enough for half a sock, so I’ll be knitting yet another pair of pirate socks! 😀

Scrap Along 2025
Tumblr media
So, I had this idea…
Scrap Along 2025 begins on Valentines Day and ends on the Ides of March (15 March). Start earlier or finish later, but make something with leftover yarn. You don’t have enough scraps for an entire project? Include what you do have!
Believe me, I’m all for buying new yarn, especially from indie dyers and welcoming yarn shops. Lots of it! Sometimes I just can’t. And besides, if I liked the yarn the first time I used it, I want to use every last inch and centimeter.
Please share what you make and the making of it with the tag #ScrapAlong2025. Tag the dyer who created it, the LYS where you bought it, the loved one who gave it to you.
Why? To put it mildly, we’re living in uncertain times that will likely get worse before they get better. For now, we piece together our lives as best we can. Many have been doing that all along. Like piecing together leftover yarn into something gorgeous, one of a kind, memorable. Like you.
All of the 2SLGBTQIA+ letters, the colors, the genders, the love, the ages. All of the yarn.
Be scrappy.

Scrap Along 2025
Tumblr media
Welcome to the first day of Scrap Along 2025! 🥳
It’s an opportunity for yarn crafters of all kinds—crochet, embroidery, felting, knitting, latch hook, macrame, nalbinding, needlepoint, tatting, weaving, and any I missed—to create with leftover yarn and share their scrappy gorgeousness online.
Tag your posts with #ScrapAlong2025. If you can, tag the dyer and/or LYS that sold it. Please use alt tags on your images.
In conclusion… “These are little scraps of magic & when you paste them together you get a memory of something fine & strong, she said. Sometimes it takes till you’re 40 to see it though.” – Brian Andreas

Scrap Along 2025
Hello. Scrap Along 2025 begins later this week on Friday, February 14, and runs 30 days through the Ides of March (March 15). Just make something from leftover yarn and post it on social media with the tag #ScrapAlong2025
The idea for this grew out of comments left back and forth with Hidden Pond Yarns when I posted about being inspired by knitters to make a scrappy Musselburgh hat. Katya in turn is inspired to try scrappy knitting herself, and it reminded me of how much of my life is the result of other people's participation.
Right now, of course, a lot of people have the urgent, immediate need to piece their lives back together from what's left of family, friends, jobs, home, food, healthcare, their very identities. It makes the idea of a spontaneous project that's one of a kind and absolutely gorgeous as much an act of defiance as it is community and creativity.
If you use yarn to crochet, embroider, felt (I made a list) knit, latch hook, macrame, nalbind, needlepoint, tat, weave, and any other yarn craft I left out, you can scrap along.
Post your results and progress with the tag #ScrapAlong2025. Tag the dyer if you can, and the yarn shop where you made the purchase. They should know we're using their yarn. Add alt tags to your photos. It's important for accessibility and searching.
But most of all, have a great time.
Thanks.

Yarn cozies complete! (Pattern here)
Tumblr media
I started an amigurumi dragon afterwards - found the pattern on Ravelry and thought it was super cute (pattern here)

And in between, I made a spontaneous pride flag inspired mini owl from the big box of acrylic scraps (it might get some wings later if I can figure out a good shape for them)

Musselburgh Hat
The latest rounds of my scrappy Musselburgh hat will probably be covered by the folded brim. So, after knitting a couple more inches I plan to add trans pride stripes. This pink and blue yarn is more saturated than actual trans pride colors, but they’re what I have and I think they will work.

Musselburgh Hat
Close up of my first pass at knitting Trans Pride stripes into the scrappy Musselburgh hat I’m making for Scrap Along 2025. I can do better. The Trans Pride stripes are a touch less than half an inch wide. Maybe it should be an inch. End of round is a bit wonky. Color changes are too tight, the blue is slightly lighter weight. I have an anonymous blue that would work. Not interested in jogless stripes. Time to tink!

Pirate Socks
A last pair of pirate socks for Scrap Along 2025. With less leftover yarn, I knit these from red and brown colorways and used helical knitting to suggest more, different looks. As scrappy socks go, these are quite stately.

Scrap Along 2025
Knitting another 3.75 in / 9.5 cm of stockinette has brought me to the exact halfway point of my scrappy Musselburgh hat. 🥳 Only 21,630 stitches left to go!

Pirate Socks
A new pair of scrappy top down, heel flap, and gusset pirate socks. These are ready for their heel flaps. The colors are reminiscent of vivid sunsets and the last streaks of daylight.
