An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Mythical Creatures by Theresa Breslin and illustrated by Kate Leiper . Some days I can’t really get into reading, and on those kinds of days I prefer to read something shorter, so I can read it in one go and finish it, whether that’s myths, fairytales or children’s books! Does anyone else do that? . . . #theresabreslin #kateleiper #kelpiebooks #florisbooks #scotland #scottishmyths #scottish #reference #referencebooks #bookcover #booksinthewild #booksandnature #childrensreference #childrensnonfiction #raisingareader #childrensbooks #kidlit #bookstagram #bookpicture #bookphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/BtuWvbmH0Ot/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hqhontvdvk4h

#inktober day 5 #build #watercolor + #ink The #pech were a type of #gnome-like creatures in #Scottishmyth. They were of short height but extremely strong. In one #fairytale, an old blind pech is on his deathbed. He asks his sons if he can feel their arm mucles, to feel how strong they've grown. His sons play a prank on him, giving him a metal cup instead of one son's arm. He snaps the metal cup with his fingers, shattering it, to the amazement of the sons. Even sick on his deathbed, he is stronger than his young healthy sons. The Pech were thought to be one of the aboriginal builders of the stone megaliths of ancient Scotland, along with #giants. They might be related to the #Picts and #pixies of Scotland. They seem to be related to the word 'peck', as in Peter Piper's 'peck of pickled peppers'. A peck is a small amount, as in 'add pinch of salt'. This may be related to the pech's short stature. 'Pech' is used as a pejorative term for the halfling-like race in the 1988 film Willow by George Lucas - it can be assumed the idea comes from this #myth. Cailleach Bheur, sometimes called the Queen of Winter, is the goddess said to have created Scotland. She built mountains and hills to be her stepping stones and carries a hammer for carving out the valleys and dales. A giantess, she is sometimes described as having blue skin, rust coloured teeth and only one eye.

Introducing: Fideal.
Fideal of Loch Na Fideil in Scotland was once said to lure men to a watery death with a beautiful voice and appearance.
I apologize for giving up trying to force the text-to-speech to pronounce things right.
Can't listen to a video at the moment? Here is the post:

The water fairy called "Loireag" has ties to a Scottish tradition of "waulking the cloth." 👚🧚‍♀️
