HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Lola Albright, drummer Tony Allen, the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing, the Billboard Singles Charts (1940), music aficionado & influencer John Bonato, Tantoo Cardinal, Kim Carnes, Paul Cook, Chris Cornell, Omar Epps, Franz Fanon, Tim Ferriss, Jem Finer, Radney Foster, Mort Garson, Stone Gossard, Saginaw Grant, Sir Edmund Hillary, Sally Ann Howes, Iron Butterfly’s 1968 IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA album, Buddy Knox, John Lodge, Mick MacNeil (Simple Minds), Cormac McCarthy, Gregor Mendel, Sandra Oh, Petrarch, Diana Rigg, T.G. Sheppard, the 1961 musical STOP THE WORLD I WANT TO GET OFF, songwriter Cindy Walker, Natalie Wood, Dennis Yost, and the visionary guitarist and band-leader Carlos Santana. His music has been in my orbit ever since I saw Santana’s sizzling performance in the WOODSTOCK movie. I marvel at his fusion of Latin and world music, jazz, psychedelic rock, and pop, and he’s King of the Long-Sustained Note, milking the full potential of a tone. I didn’t grasp the depth of his music till recent years, amplified because I now live in the San Francisco neighborhood where Santana grew up and I worked with musicians who’ve played with Santana.
In 2009 I was honored to participate in a Santana tribute concert produced by The Uptown Music Collective, performing Santana’s arrangement of “Oye Como Va.” Because of the song’s American, Cuban, Mexican, and Puerto Rican roots, it’s now a badge of interconnectedness and hybridity for Latin music in the USA and beyond. Here we are performing it at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport PA—with “more cowbell” and superb lead guitar by Scott Francis. Meanwhile, thank you Carlos for your years of music-making and bringing people together.

Scott Frances will be teaching at the Palm Springs Photo Festival May 7-12th!
“For the first time at PSPF, photographer Scott Frances will conduct a much-awaited architecture and interiors workshop.
Whether you are a professional or enthusiast architectural photographer this course will have plenty to offer you.  We will explore shooting commercial and residential buildings and interiors in both day and evening. The one constant being that we will never use supplemental lighting.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to CLIFF RICHARD + SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkyotMyrVuM
“Please Don’t Wait Too Long (TV appearance)” or “I got mail from Sir Cliff Richard?!?”--On a cosmic jukebox, this affecting song would play next to The Beach Boys and Todd Rundgren. The lyrics are about a conversation between a man and a woman that seems romantic, but they’re actually on to bigger, more everlasting matters. Back in the 80s, I pitched the song to (now Sir) Cliff Richard, who wrote me a touching letter asking me to send him more songs. My friend Davy Jones (Monkees) was also a fan of this song, and I’m told it was covered by a British pub band. In 2007 I remixed it (w/Scott Francis) for a Franken-compilation CD called GRATEFUL, and I’m grateful that you’re checking out this song right now!

SONG OF THE WEEK: “And I Love Her” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/and-i-love-her-2  —This Friday 7/28/23 I’ll be participating in a “Beatles vs. Monkees” sing-a-long @ The Monkey House in Berkeley CA (7PM start—DM me for details).  Meanwhile, here’s the only Beatles cover I’ve ever recorded: One night, while recording demos in a San Francisco loft, I had a "rediscover my roots" moment. Beatles, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd came up in my brain-feed, and I fancied the idea of doing "And I Love Her" as if it were written for a Kabuki Theatre (Japanese opera) libretto about a haunted shipwreck, as scored by King Crimson. The slide guitar work pays tribute to Dave Gilmour (the guitar was de-tuned to an E/B/E/D#/B/E). There's a Ronnie Spector influence in the fade chorus. Scott Francis adeptly remixed this in 2009 for a Beatles radio special (FYI my favorite cover of this song is by Julio Iglesias). Thanks for listening.
