1966 Week To Wicked: Old Air Products
Seems like no matter what part of the country you live in, it’s been hot lately, making it that much more important that we have working air conditioning in our Mustangs to make the cruise more comfortable. And come winter, we’ll really appreciate a quality heater and defroster, right? Old Air Products to the rescue!
For the Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang we built recently, we chose the 1965-1966 Hurricane system from Old Air that has air conditioning, heat, and defrost all in one unit, and installs in a few hours (maybe a tad longer if you’ve never done one before). The base kit comes with everything needed to install the system including pre-crimped hoses and controls. However, since we went full restomod on our ‘66 Hardtop, we had to custom order a few things like a right side condenser and a compressor and bracket delete (we used custom All American Billet front serpentine system that came with the compressor/bracket combo).
The box mounts up under the dash on the passenger side, and everything else is basically a plug and play deal. Check out the video for more.

Yammine: 1966 Week To Wicked: ididit Steering Column
When it comes to the most vital component of any car, regardless of year, make, model, or anything, the one thing you CANNOT be without is steering. When building the Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang, we realized early on that our stock steering column was worn out. The shaft bearings were pretty much gone, making for a shaking, sloppy, imprecise steering wheel that was borderline dangerous on the street. So from day one, we knew we’d need either a rebuilt or a brand new column, and the choice of which to go with was easy; ididit.
For our no-frills musclecar, we went with ididit’s ProLite column, which as the name suggests is the lightest weight, non-tilt column they offer—perfect for our ’66 Hardtop. This thing weighs about 6 ½ pounds yet still has turn signals and hazard flashers and is collapsible so it won’t spear you through the heart in a front-end collision as some early factory columns can. It came with a firewall adapter and plug-in wiring for the flashers and horn and will mount any wheel with a commonly available adapter.
So check out our video of installing this puppy in our Classic Performance Parts 1966 Week To Wicked Mustang Hardtop!

1966 Week To Wicked: Mustangs To Fear
Mustangs To Fear (MTF) was a unique sponsor on our Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang in that they supplied parts for both the outside and the inside. On the outside, MTF supplied a fiberglass lower front valance, upper nose, and hood with Shelby scoop to replace our stock sheetmetal. Superstition Restoration in Mesa, AZ installed the parts prior to paint.
Once back in our Tech Center with the build going full-steam, we installed the interior parts that MTF supplied. The first part was the one-piece headliner, which we now will install in every Mustang we build short of a pure restoration—it’s that cool. The headliner is made of fiberglass with a sierra grain texture and comes in black but can be dyed to whatever interior color you’re going with. It’s easy to install and provides a much-needed 2 ½ inches of headroom. Next up was the 1965-66 Mustang Door Panel Kit that comes with built-in speakers. As MTF says, “These custom doors panels are a must have to help bridge the gap into realizing your restomod dreams. Adding these panels to the interior of your mustang takes the style and appearance of your car to a whole new level. They are available in carbon fiber, grey sterling(ABS) or real brushed aluminum. This comes with a relocation kit for the door handle, door panel cups and clips.”
Finally, we went with MTF’s center console with brushed aluminum trim (not contact paper) and an arm rest with high quality foam that won’t “sink” when you lean on it. Over 115 custom combinations are available with your choice of vinyl or carpet sides, switch type and location, radios, and gauges, and custom embroidery makes this console as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional.

1966 Week To Wicked: Maxxis Tires
The highlight—and end point—of our Week To Wicked projects has always been the big smoky burnout, and that’s obviously not possible without tires. To facilitate that burnout and wrap around our Rocket Racing Wheels on the Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang, we went with a set of Maxxis Victra VR-1s.
The Victra VR-1 is a relatively new tire for Maxxis and slots into the company’s UHP line. They call it an “Extreme Summer Tire designed for drivers who want it all” due to a 200 treadwear rating, excellent dry traction with a compound that gets up to operating temperature quickly to provide traction, and wide circumferential and diagonal grooves to evacuate water on wet roads.
Maxxis labels it as a step up from a traditional UHP tire but not quite a full-race tire with horrible wet weather performance. It really is a tire that delivers for drivers that want performance regardless of the weather conditions. And as the video proves, they deliver huge clouds of smoke in burnouts!

1966 Week To Wicked: G-Force Driveshaft
The Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang received a hot, 507hp small-block, a stout transmission, and an equally stout 9-inch rearend, but that’s leaving one key component out of the drivetrain—a driveshaft strong enough to deliver the prodigious torque to the rear wheels without going into full pretzel mode. That function was capably handled by GForce Engineering.
GForce built our driveshaft to our measurements (if you’re unsure how to measure for a custom driveshaft, their website has detailed instructions) using 3 ½-inch diameter 6061-T6 aluminum, a super strong chromoly yoke, and 1350-series U-joints. All GForce driveshafts are high-speed balanced and are an easy installation. For the Mustang market, GForce has driveshafts and half-shaft assemblies for all of the later years, and of course can do custom-length ‘shafts as well. So check out their site when it comes time to build your own restomod Mustang!

1966 Week To Wicked: Drake Automotive Group Restoration Parts
The Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang that we built was literally built in a week, not counting body and paint. We tore it down to a bare shell on Monday and by Friday night it was running and driving. And when you tear a 51 year-old car that far apart, there are a boatload of parts you’ll need to replace all that stuff that is too old, broken, or just rusty and pitted to reuse.
Thankfully, everything you could possibly need to restore an early Mustang can be found in the Drake Automotive Group catalog or website, so that’s where we turned. Drake supplied every little piece (and a few big ones too) to rebuild the car from the ground-up. The most obvious are the new taillight bezels, chrome trim, and flip-open LeMans gas cap (which is an easy bolt on). Not seen are all those little parts inside the doors and behind the dash—and everywhere else.
So if you need some high-quality restoration parts for a Mustang, even if you’re not tearing it down as far as we did to ours, check out the Drake Automotive Group.

1966 Week To Wicked: FiTech Fuel Injection
Isn’t technology just grand? It is especially when it’s aimed at hot rods and classic cars. A perfect example of technology that makes our lives easier and better is when it comes to fuel injection. In previous decades, installing electronic fuel injection was a nightmare of gathering parts, sensors, various control systems, and a den-of-snakes situation when it came to wiring. And then you had to figure out how to adapt a high-pressure fuel system to the ‘60s car to feed the fuel injection. Thankfully, the afore-mentioned technology that we have today makes replacing a carburetor with electronic fuel injection a piece of cake, and one of the easiest ways we’ve ever tried is with an FiTech system.
The Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang received one of FiTech’s Go EFI 4 600 HP throttle body systems to feed its 507hp Ford crate motor, and installation was barely more work than bolting on and tuning a carburetor. FiTech’s kit features four injectors, a built-in computer, and all the sensors and wiring you’ll need to install it. Watch this video as FiTech’s Jason Oberhelman tells Mustang Monthly’s Mark Houlahan all about the company’s kit, as well as their killer drop-in fuel system to feed it the gas.

1966 Week To Wicked: CPP Brakes
The two most important safety items on any car are the steering and brakes. You may have already seen our video on how we updated the steering system of the Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang (http://www.mustangandfords.com/project-vehicles/1805-1966-week-to-wicked-cpp-steering/). The next thing to address from the CPP catalog was new brakes for the car.
Thankfully, we had already selected a set of 18-inch Rocket Racing wheels with Maxxis tires, so we had plenty of room to go big on the brakes. CPP set us up with it’s Big Brake Kit for the early Mustang (though they have them for a lot of cars and trucks) that uses 13-inch rotors in the front, 12-inchers in the rear, and four-piston front calipers with integral parking brake in the rear (it comes with a cable too). We used the Granada spindles with a one-inch drop, and a non-boosted master cylinder.
The brakes installed easily, made even easier by the CPP suspension we had already installed on the car, and they work like gangbusters. For more information, or to check out the enormous selection of suspension and brakes parts from Classic Performance Parts, check out the company’s website at ClassicPerform.com.

1966 Week To Wicked: Derale
The more power an engine makes, the more heat it makes. That’s just a matter of physics. While the idea is to use all of an engine’s internal heat to make power, in reality most of that heat is lost through the exhaust, oil system, and the cooling system. So it stands to reason that more horsepower means more heat escaping, and in many cases an overheating engine.
Because there are few things worse than an overheating car, we went with the best cooling system we could to help tame that 507 horsepower under the hood from the Ford crate motor in the Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang. For a cooling fan, we chose a 14-inch unit from Derale, and the company expertly fit it to a BeCool aluminum radiator for maximum cooling.
The fan is part number 16817, a shrouded fan that features a two-speed motor, fan blades that are integrated into the housing (so they’re not separate), 2,100 cfm of maximum airflow, and pressure relief vents to allow air to pass through easily at highway speeds. Derale also included a heat sink cooler that can cool nearly any fluid from engine oil, trans fluid, differential fluid, fuel…you name it.
At the end of our video, Derale’s Vice President of Performance Products Tom Longo dropped the news that later in 2018, the company will be releasing a line of electric fuel pumps and a mechanical water pump, which he described as being on the “high end level” of the market, so make sure to watch for those hot new parts.

1966 Week To Wicked: Axalta
The Classic Performance Parts Week To Wicked 1966 Mustang needed a touch of body work and then a complete repaint before we pulled it into the shop for our week of insanity, and that was capably handled with product from Axalta. Because the painter, Superstition Restoration, is in Arizona they chose to use solvent-based material from Axalta, in our case 2016 Ford Competition Orange.
As a company, Axalta just celebrated 150 years in the coatings industry. They have 51 manufacturing facilities, four global tech centers, over 30 technology laboratories, 47 customer training centers, and do business in 130-plus countries. There are 1,400 distributors, 13,300 employees, over 1,000 patents, and did $4.4 billion dollars in net sales last year. Yeah, that’s a HUGE paint company!
Suffice it to say, they had the perfect paint, primer, and everything else we needed to make our ’66 Mustang burn retinas country-wide. Check out Axalta’s website for much more about the killer paint and materials they offer to professionals and home garage painters alike.
