Elly Low – “I’m Afraid” (Video Premiere)
Today I’m thrilled to introduce everyone to a new artist named Elly Low, and share her debut music video for “I’m Afraid.” This song is a catchy jazz-pop track that explores the relatable vulnerability and uncertainty of falling in love. The song reminds me a bit of Amy Winehouse’s charisma paired with Lana Del Rey’s songwriting. Her label shared, “Elly sent me a few demos, and I was knocked out. I immediately offered her a development deal. She has a modern sound in an earthy, bluesy, Georgia kind of way. ‘I’m Afraid’ is the first of what’s going to be many songs coming from this uniquely talented singer/songwriter.” If you’re enjoying the debut single from Elly Low, keep an eye out for her debut EP that will be released later this year. I was also able to catch up with Elly for a brief interview below. Could you tell us more about your collaboration with Jack Douglas and how it influenced the production and direction of “I’m Afraid”? From the moment I met Jack I started sending him phone memos of my song ideas. He would tell me what he liked and which of those ideas he thought I should develop. Having that type of guidance is invaluable. Since Jack had already given me positive feedback on the more Jazz influenced ideas I had sent him, I decided to go in that direction. At the time I was listening to Gin and Juice by Andra Day on Repeat so as far as music goes that was my frame of mind. I had about 5 song titles about things in my life that I wanted to write about and when I put them down on paper this one seemed like best place to start. After that the idea came together fairly quickly and Jack loved my very first demo of it. With your upcoming EP on the horizon, what can listeners expect from you and your sound? Are there any surprises or new directions you’re excited to unveil? We have a lot of tracks that we’ve been recording in LA with Jack. A really nice variety of solid songs I feel good about.  There are some really great musicians playing on the tracks that Jack introduced me to and we were really able to make things gel.   I guess you could say most of my songs have a jazzy, soulful sound. “Pick Up the Pieces” a song co-wrote with Sara Davis is one of my favorites that we recorded and it actually has a country feel to it in a Sheryl Crow sort of way.  I also have some upcoming songs that I co-wrote with Scott Mulvahill that I am excited about. There’s a real 60s-mod vibe in the music video for “I’m Afraid”. What about this song drew you to the aesthetics of that time period? I’ve always been drawn to that time period.  I love the music, the hairstyles, the clothing and the way people interacted with each other.  I would say that most of my music has a similar vibe, it’s honestly just my style. --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/features/elly-low-im-afraid-video-premiere/

Jon McLaughlin & Matt Wertz w/Scott Mulvahill
Date: November 4, 2018
Venue: Freight & Salvage / Berkeley
It’s obscene how delayed I am in writing this concert review. I honestly don’t know where the days go but my goal is to get all my reviews done by the end of January (this is the first of six). So, let’s jump right in!
The evening started with a pre-show meet and greet with Jon and Matt that included some acoustic tunes and a hilarious photo op. We laughed a lot and enjoyed watching people taking their photos. The music was lovely - I’m always a fan of acoustic! - and Jon even played my suggestion, Imaginary Tea. It was every kind of perfect.

Scott Mulvahill opened the show and he was fantastic! It’s not very often that you see an upright bass-playing singer-songwriter, it was certainly a first for me, but I’m definitely a huge fan. Scott’s talent is ridiculous from his writing to his singing to his ridiculously playing. He was clearly having a lot of fun on stage and his energy was contagious. The music was good and different than what you hear on the radio. The sound was soothing and lovely and I loved listening to him. He also played with Jon and Matt and showcased some electric bass skills as well. I highly recommend checking him out!

Jon and Matt shared the stage and also did sets on their own and it was truly a wonderful evening of music. Jon has been a favorite as long as I can remember and I’ve seen him live numerous times. Each time is unique and perfect and always brings great musical memories. This was only the second time I’d seen Matt live and he was just as good as I remembered. I don’t know his music as well but he’s absolutely charming on stage and, like Jon, wickedly talented. The two musicians are clearly good friends and much of the show felt like we’d stumbled into one of their living rooms and were just hanging out. The night was filled with great songs that included old favorites and new soon-to-be favorites. Jon is an incredibly gifted pianist and I loved being able to sit close enough to watch him play. Matt is a fantastic guitarist and has tons of energy when he plays. Watching the two banter between songs was half the fun of the night and I hope to see them again soon.

For the fanfic asks: 🛒💋🎶🧠(for JD)
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
Oh man, there's probably a lot, but overall is probably JD whump. Poor guy is always going through The Agonies, but I swear it's just so Perry can comfort and love him 🥰 I also really love Perry brushing his thumb over JD's cheek and being Soft with him. In almost every fic, there's gotta be a hospital scene and some Carla meddling/cheerleading lol
💋 First kiss fics. Love em or hate em?
Love!! If you know me, it should come as no surprise that I highly prefer the kiss to become smut, but getting together/first kiss fics are SO sweet and I love how many different ways writers have thought to do it 😄
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
Depends on where I'm writing, but I would say almost all the time. If I'm writing on my phone or iPad, chances are I'm in my living room. Sometimes I'll try to have a show/movie/YT video going but it almost always becomes too distracting and I'll put Spotify on instead. And on my desktop, I always have Spotify and various Google searches on one monitor and Google docs on the other. I've been mostly listening to Taylor Swift's entire discography to try and learn the songs/albums I don't know as well, but a few other songs I've had on repeat are: April & Salt and The Sea by The Lumineers, Himalayas & Gold-Plated Lie by Scott Mulvahill, Had A Dream (For the Heart) by The Judds, and Jackie Onassis by Sammy Rae & The Friends
🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them.
JD, my beloved 🥰 Trans JD is of course number one, so much so that it's pretty much just canon to me. Check out my tag if you're curious!
