Jexi, find me a funny movie
Title: “Jexi”
Release date: Oct. 11, 2019
Starring: Adam Devine, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Pena, Rose Byrne, Wanda Sykes, Ron Funches, Charlyne Yi, Justin Hartley, Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi
Directed by: Jon Lucas and Scott Moore
Run time: 1 hour, 24 minutes
Rated: R
What it’s about: A 30-something man living in San Francisco has no friends, no girlfriend and a job he doesn’t like, and he is addicted to his phone. When it is destroyed and he must upgrade to a new model, it comes with Jexi, artificial intelligence that says it wants to make him a better person but tries to take over his life.
How I saw it: This may come as some shock, but a lot of us are addicted to our phones. And that’s the basic launching pad for “Jexi,” which seems a lot like 2013’s computer romance “Her” if it hadn’t been made by Spike Jonez but was instead the product of guys who had a hand in such films as “The Hangover,” “Bad Moms” and “The Change-Up.” Because that’s exactly the case here.
“Jexi” stars Adam Devine as Phil. He has no social life (and doesn’t seem to want one), has no girlfriend (instead, he watches a lot of porn), writes top-10 lists for a webzine (and aspires to be a “real journalist”) and is, of course, addicted to his phone. He spends his evenings alone in his San Francisco apartment and orders the same take-out meal every night. His life is going nowhere, and he seems unable or unwilling to do anything about it.
One day, while walking down a sidewalk staring at his phone, he literally runs into Cate (Alexandra Shipp), a cute and lively vintage bicycle shop owner. During an awkward exchange (Phil being quite the incel), Phil’s phone is destroyed. He takes it to a store to get a new model, and it comes with female-voiced operating system called Jexi. When Phil can’t be bothered reading the user agreement (who ever does?), he unknowingly cedes control of his phone and his life to Jexi.
Jexi (voiced by Rose Byrne) sizes up Phil and declares him a loser. She mocks him incessantly, firing off insults about the size of his manhood and questioning his ability to be a man. She says the word f**k or some variation of it, and a word that is a euphemism for “vagina,” at every opportunity, and it ceases being funny after just a couple of minutes, if not seconds. Jexi does, however, convince Phil to pursue a romance with Cate, but when an unlikely one blossoms, she turns into an electronic version of the crazy ex-girlfriend. Will Phil shake loose of Jexi’s control? Will he land his dream job? Will he find true love with Cate? Does any of this really matter?
In a word, no. “Jexi” is another in a line of raunchy comedies by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (who co-directed and co-wrote) that relies almost entirely on sophomoric humor and a dash of maudlin sentimentality. Here, they are layering jokes (that miss more than they hit) on top of an important current topic, our addiction to technology and social media. It’s a topic that could make for a good film, even a good comedy, in the right hands. Instead, we get mostly a barrage of penis jokes.
Devine, who can be funny, seems to be trying hard here to little avail. He is almost always on screen, and for most of the movie he is interacting with his phone and its voice, so he’s doing a lot of mugging. But laughs out loud are scarce. Same goes for Michael Pena, who plays Phil’s boss and gets little mileage out of an over-the-top effort. The comedic talents of Charlyne Yi, who can be funny in her own weird way, are wasted here. Wanda Sykes has some funny moments as the woman who helps Phil at the phone store, comparing his phone addiction to crack addicts, noting that even the latter are more social than hipsters with phones.
With comedy that is only sporadically funny, that leaves us with the romance portion of “Jexi.” Shipp, though charming, plays a variation of the familiar manic pixie dream girl. She is fun and quirky (she wouldn’t own just any bike shop; it had to be a vintage bike shop), notably younger than Phil and attractive enough to not to have to mess with guys like Phil were this real life. She doesn’t have a social media presence, having had an epiphany about her overuse of Instagram. She, of course, convinces Phil to take chances and live a little, because that is what is required of manic pixie dream girls. Cate’s reasons for falling for Phil here aren’t clear. Maybe she just needed a fixer-upper.
“Jexi” hits an all-too familiar rhythm. Phil is unhappy. Then he meets a girl and makes some friends and is happy. Then he sleeps with the girl and is really happy. Then things go horribly wrong. Then things work out in the end. Phil even makes peace with the psychotic Jexi (after having “sex” with her, in a truly uncomfortable and not funny scene), teaching us, apparently, that technology can enhance our lives if we don’t let it control our lives. What better to teach us that than a raunchy comedy?
My score: 21 out of 100
Should you see it? Not really, unless you have a slow night after it comes out on disc and streaming services. Instead, try checking out or revisiting “Her.”
