Chapter Three: “Your Obedient Servant”

“You’ve kept me from the room where it happens for the last time.”

Word count: ~2450 words

Warnings: Shitty parent, verbal abuse from mother, language, bullying, brief mention of alcohol, mention of guns, implied murder, typical Criminal Minds-esque details towards the murder but nothing graphic.

A/N: And here we are! Chapter three! I think I have marked all warnings but if there are any I’ve missed, please feel free to let me know! As always, feedback is always appreciated. This chapter is kind of background of reader focused and I’m so sorry for that. I hope y’all can enjoy anyways and enjoy the turn made towards bringing everyone in. Eight years old…

“What in fresh hell are you doing?” A voice came from your doorway, one that belonged to your mother. You didn’t look up from where you laid on the floor, a colored pencil in your hand and a coloring book was spread out in front of you. Your room was illuminated by the lamp on your bedside table, it being well past your bedtime.

“Coloring. Couldn’t sleep.” Footsteps got louder as your mother approached and you flinched as she snatched the book up.

“What time is your bedtime?”

“Eight-thirty.” She cleared her throat. “Ma’am.”

“And it’s midnight. So your ass should be where?”

“But I wasn’t making any noise.” Your eyes met your mother’s and her harsh glare made you look back down. “In bed.”

“That’s right.” She grabbed your arm and pulled you to your feet, and you tried not to wince. “If I come check on you and catch you out of this bed again, you’re gonna be in so much trouble, kid.”

“But what if I can’t sleep?” You asked as you climbed back into your bed.

“You’ll fall asleep eventually.” Your mother turned off your lamp, the warm glow of the room now being replaced by total darkness. “I’ll see you in the morning.” Your mother walked out of the room, shutting the door behind her. You listened for a minute to make sure she was really in bed before you pulled your stuffed animal to your chest and screwed your eyes shut.

“Unfortunately.”

Sixteen years old…

“Happy birthday, kiddo. The big sixteen.” You smiled as you held your phone, sat on the bench outside of school as you waited for your mom to pick you up. Your dad was on the other end of the phone, and you had to admit you missed him. “Still up for your visit this weekend?”

“Are you? You pulled a Mom and bailed on me last time.” Your words could sound harsh to anyone passing by, but there was no malice behind them, just a teasing smile. And you could practically hear your dad rolling his eyes.

“Brat.”

“Yours truly.”

“I promise, nothing will stop me from seeing you this weekend. It’s not every day your only child turns sixteen.” A sigh from the other end makes your heart clench. “I miss you, kid.”

“I miss you too, Dad. I can’t wait to see you.” “Ditto.” Muffled voices were heard in the background before your dad spoke again. “I have to go, but I expect to hear all about your birthday extravaganza Saturday.”

“You mean my trip to the bookstore with Este and dinner with her family? Mom’s too busy with her new fu-”

“Uh uh. It may be true, but don’t finish that sentence.” You could hear the smile in your dad’s voice, mixed with irritation. “I love you, sunshine.”

“I love you, Dad. See you Saturday.”

“See you then.” You hung up and tucked your phone into your pocket, opening the book that sat in your lap to read as you waited for your mom to pick you up from school.

You were delved deep into your book, the sound of the athletes practicing in the nearby fields fading into silence as you let yourself become entranced in your book. You didn’t notice the looming shadow of Lara standing over you.

“Well, thanks, Y/L/N! I’ve been looking for a new book.” You jumped when you heard her voice. She snatched the book from your hands and you reached for it, but she was quicker.

“Give it back!”

“Really? David Rossi?” Lara scoffed and tossed the book over her shoulder where it landed in a pile of mud by the sidewalk we were on. “Whoops.” Lara walked past you, her shoulder knocking harshly into yours. “It’s too easy with them.” Lara said to herself and you ran to your book, and your eyes watered as you knelt down to pick it up, the book being covered in mud.

“Don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry.” You whispered to yourself as you held the book and tried your best to wipe the mud off it. You sighed in resignation and walked to the trash can a few feet away and set the book in. You were going to the bookstore tomorrow, you could replace it then.

You were snapped out of your thoughts when a car honked and you looked up, noticing your mother’s car. “Come on, we’ve got places to be.” Your mother yelled from the open window and you nodded.

“Coming.” You called out and jogged over to the car, throwing your backpack into the backseat before you got into the passenger seat.

“What’s wrong with you?” She gestured to your red eyes before she noticed your dirty hands. “Gross, how old are you?” She slapped the back of your head and you digged for napkins in the glove compartment while apologizing repeatedly.

“I’m sorry. Lara threw my book in the mud and I tried to save it.”

“Those were weird books anyways. She did you a favor.”

Twenty-two years old…

“Look at our college graduate, Jess.” Este’s father, Phil, smiled from the head of the table. “Look out, world, you’re not prepared.”

“I will not be taking over the world until Y/N is. They still have one year to finish their master’s degree. So I’m taking a gap year. Maybe I’ll go husband hunting.”

“Or, you know, do something that’ll look better on your job applications.” Este’s sister deadpanned.

“Where’s the fun in that?” You nudged Este with your foot and gave her a playful warning look. Este stuck her tongue out at you and you mirrored her expression.

“I wish Y/N would have majored in the same thing as you, Este.” Not even fifteen words out of your mother and the whole atmosphere was brought down. Why couldn’t she be with Joe? Jonah? J-something. “Instead of aiming for the FBI, where you’re not even guaranteed a job.”

“Which is why I majored in criminology. Minored in digital forensics. And I’m earning my masters in forensic psychology.” You responded, not sparing her a glance.

“And if you still don’t-”

“I think my credentials will be impressive regardless.” You paused as the waitress stopped by, setting everyone’s plates down. You thanked her as she left, before looking at your mother. “Even if I don’t immediately get offered a job, I don’t mind. I can work my way to the FBI. I don’t get bored of something within a month.” Bella’s eyes widened and Este smirked to herself as she took a sip of her drink.

“I would sure hope not! College would have been a bad idea if you couldn’t work at something for a month.” Jessica, Este’s mother, tried to joke but your mother was relentless.

“I hope you fix your personality before you apply or they’ll never let you in through the door.��

“You don’t like it? I learned from you.” Your mother stood from her chair, the chair scraping loudly against the floor.

“I’m done.”

“Drive safe.” You called out to your mother’s retreating form and rolled your eyes as you turned to Este. “Drinks?”

“Drinks.”

Twenty-five years old…

“So, you’re about halfway done with your training at the Academy.” You sat across from your field counselor, Abby. “How have things been?”

“Andrew and I had some… creative differences with firearms training.”

“Creative differences?” Abby asked and you thought back to the day.

You had missed the vital shots multiple times, and you and Andrew both were getting irritated at each other. What was meant to be motivating turned snarky, which had started to turn condescending. You started off getting close to your vitals, and with each negative comment, your concentration turned to frustration which led to further off shots.

“If you could make these three shots so I can leave, that would be great. Come on, how are you going to ace rifle training but not handgun? I might as well talk to our program director and tell her your future in the Academy and FBI is a deadend. But if she ever needs a sharp-shooter…” And something snapped inside you, and you shot the five targets in front of you perfectly. Alternating between head and chest shots, straight in the middle. Bullseyes. You turned to face Andrew, walked towards him and set your gun in his hand.

“You may leave now.” You walked towards the doors of the firing range and called out. “See you tomorrow.”

“I see.” There was a hint of a smirk on her face as she spoke. “You know you can’t let people get to you like he did. It may have benefitted you this time, but there will come a time where you’ll reach your breaking point and lose your temper at your superior and risk your job.”

“You know about my parents, it’s kind of genetic.” You sighed. “But I will work on it. I know I need to.”

“Good. And I’ll have a word with Andrew about his motivational methods.” You let out a laugh before your session continued.

Thirty-one years old…

You sat in Hotch’s office and your body language screamed ‘angry.’ Your arms were crossed over your chest, your foot tapped against the floor, and if that wasn’t enough, the saying if looks could kill truly applied to you right now. If looks could kill, Aaron Hotchner would be a pile of dust in his chair. But like usual, Hotch’s body language was as usual. Professional, stoic, cold. He’d warmed up to the rest of the team, surprising you that he wasn’t truly emotionless after all. But that persona never came out around you. All that came out was indifference at best. Disapproval at worst, often paired with anger. Disappointment. That’s all you’d ever be, huh?

You had been called to Hotch’s office after you got back from your latest case. You’d never seen Hotch as mad as he was then. To anyone else, it might seem like he got mad because he cared about you and your wellbeing. But that was not the case today. You didn’t follow his orders, and now you were to pay the consequences.

“I am slow to anger, but I toe the line as I think about the effects of your choices on the team. I look back on where we failed, but in every place I checked, the only common thread?”

“Let me guess, me?” You interrupted.

“Your disrespect.” Hotch narrowed his eyes at you.

“You call me inexperienced, a danger to the team.” You leaned forward as you began to speak.

“Agent, if you’ve got something to say-” You raised your hand, cutting him off.

“Name a time and place, face to face. Then we can really talk.” You rested your hands on his desk, matching the expression he was giving you.

“That is enough, Agent Y/L/N.” Hotch spoke after a minute of your stare-down, and you settled back into your seat.

“I’m just an agent, trying to do my best for our team. I don’t want to fight but I won’t apologize for doing what I believe was right.”

“Careful, Y/N, or it’ll be the end of your career at the BAU. Not mine.”

“I won’t apologize for my actions, if that’s what you’re looking for.” You shrugged.

“Then be prepared to meet with me and Strauss tomorrow morning to discuss your placement on this team.” Hotch leaned back in his chair.

“Are you fucking serious? Every agent on this team has gone against orders. Even you have given the middle finger to direct orders several times. I make one call that goes against your orders, one that allows us to save the hostage and take in the unsub, and now you’re threatening my career?” You scoffed and looked your boss in the eyes as you stood up. “Unbelievable.”

“Nine sharp, agent.” Hotch kept eye contact with you as he spoke.

“Oh, I have the honor to be your obedient servant, sir.” You turned on your heel and stormed out of the office, slamming the door as you left.

Today…

You sat outside Andrew Walter’s house, lying in wait. Andrew lived in Baltimore now, having quit his job to work at a local FBI field office. You think a federal agent would have been more private about his life; it didn’t take Penelope Garcia to figure out where he worked. Where he lived. You had been waiting for the perfect moment to revisit him, and now you had it. Now was all waiting for the window of opportunity to hit. The window to open just enough for you to seize your chance and show him what all you had become since you graduated from the Academy.

The last light flickered off in his home and you looked down the street. No cars moving, no sounds of laughter or conversations could be heard from your spot. It was almost eerily silent, but there was a rush of an unknown emotion flooding through you. You tucked your gun into your waistband, snapping your gloves into place, and adjusting your hood over your hat. You got out of your car and walked up to the house, a smirk on your face.

“Come in.” Hotch glanced up from his paperwork, JJ standing in his doorway.

“I know we don’t typically take cases only involving one person.” JJ said as she walked over to Hotch’s desk. “The detective thinks there is a possibility it could be related to the Fairfax murder.”

“And do you?” Hotch held his hand out for the file and JJ set it in his hand before taking a seat.

“The possibility is there, but the similarities are basic. Both victims were men who died by gunshots. But our Fairfax victim was married, this guy is single. And in Baltimore. There’s a bit of distance between the two cities, but definitely a doable drive.”

“We’ve seen further.” Hotch opened the file and his brows furrowed. “And he died by gunshot?”

“There was some blunt force trauma involved, but the M.E. says the cause of death was the gunshot wound. All the other injuries were sustained antemortem.”

“Personal?”

“Or was our unsub physically incapable of subduing him before injuring him?” A beat of silence.

“Everyone else is here?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good. We have a case.”

Winner’s Curse: Epilogue

Note: Wooo boy, it’s over. Now I know not many people may have read this, it may not have the best editing and some parts are a bit vague and not the best. In fact I’ll probably revise some parts at a later date or if I ever decide to post on A03, but I am still super proud of it. I think I did some great character parts and there are some sections that I’m just super proud of. I’m also happy that I actually finished it. It’s my longest fic to date and I actually completed it! 30 chapters. Well 32 if you include the prologue and epilogue. So cool! Plus I wrote what I really wanted, which I’ll admit was not the plot. The plot was a bit wonky and maybe I had too many characters that I didn’t juggle well and didn’t give them all equal exploration. Also action scenes were hard for me to write so those were not the best. But still- getting to explore these characters and their relationships and include several of my favorite Disney characters. Very fun. Also thanks to @edream93 for encouraging me when this was just a little idea, looking over some sections and offering advice and for overall being an amazing person. Check out her WLTF and other descendants fics like London Fog Nightcaps. And for the final time, hope y’all enjoy reading.

Flash forward to summer break in Agrabah

Jordan stretched, cracking her back after sitting hunched at her desk for the past hour editing her latest video How to Date a Djinn Episode 3. She had finally convinced the tech-averse Calix to join her in making satire videos of all the most terrible dates she had been on. Initially, she had planned for it to be a serious thing where she reminded her viewers of genie autonomy and the idea they had feelings behind their wishing powers, but Calix was never good at playing emotional PSAs.

Besides it was more fun that way to spoof how terrible, and sometimes ridiculous her romantic suitors were. Plus the hilarity kept her from thinking too much about the bitterness of the memories.

She cracked her neck and poofed outside to Aziz’s room where her lamp laid on its usual perch. Outside she could hear the thump of running feet and the screech of confused peacocks.

“Malik! No riding the peacocks!” A servant shouted

“Yes, riding peacocks!”

“No, Noor, Fahran, that’s not allowed. Get off of them!”

Jordan shook her head in amusement at the kids' antics.

Noor and Fahran were having a blast hanging out with their new “little” brother as they called the 5 year old. Though they were family in a way. Jade was the half sister to Aladdin’s half brother, Mozonroth. And Malik was their nephew. Even though the family tree was a bit tangled and confusing to visualize in your head.

And where Jade and Malik were concerned, Jay was also included as Aladdin had originally planned in inviting the former thief to Agrabah so they could get to know each other, and Jay, to get in touch with the more savory side of his heritage. Jay and Aladdin had especially hit off as they compared lives on the streets and bragged about some of their more daring heists so any concern of whether the Jafar connection would sour things was gone. All together, Jay, Jade and Malik were new, though unofficial members of the family. Aladdin, and Jasmine decided to hold off any official adoption in respect to Jay and Jade’s feelings.

Though, having three new members meant triple the chaos, the running in the halls and inevitable breaking of antique objects. It was still triple the fun.

Razoul, predictably, despised the decision. But hey, he wasn’t the sultan.

Jordan peeked out to the hall, no sign of peacock racing or frazzled servants anywhere. Since she’d been inside so long she decided to go outside to the backyard.

Passing the living room, she saw Jay playing some sort of Wii-fit game against Carlos, Lonnie and Gil whose scores were also reflected on the screen even as they played millions of miles away in their own living rooms. Jordan checked the time, ah it was 2’o clock on the doubt. Jay always called his friends at this time since it was when the time zones converged suitably for all of them to chat.

Jade was lounging on the couch, facetiming her girlfriend, Yzla. Jordan waved, and Jade waved in return, focusing mainly on their conversation which involved some llama prank with Empress Malina. Yzla was staying with Emperor Kuzco and his family. A arrangement Kuzco had initially been against but his wife and son overruled him. Which was for the best because apparently Yzla and him were hitting it off like two peas in a pod, scaring Malina, by tricking her into thinking Kuzco had changed into a llama again.

Huh, that reminded her, she hadn’t checked social media in a few hours. So she scrolled through, looking at Ben’s new post that there was to be a new class in the fall. Magic 101 with Flora, Fauna and Merrywhether and many surprise guest lecturers.

The Magic 101 class had been one of Uma’s many ideas for the new and improved Auradon. She told Ben of Alexandria’s reasoning for the revolt, explaining that the pressure for magic creatures to deny their magic was a strong reason for resentment, and most importantly, unfair. And Ben, who had been present at several meetings where mermaids, fairies and others stated their petitions of complaints, agreed. King Ben had removed the magic ban and decided to institute the Magic 101 class. Contrary to the name, the class wasn’t for magical beings, they already knew how to deal with their powers and not use them to affect others or supposedly cheat at life. The class was a requirement for Auradonians to learn about their fellow beings, how it was a vital part of them and the greater natural world.

Ben had actually suggested that she’d be the magical liaison and teacher assistant for the new Magic 101 classes but she had politely declined. She did accept going as a demonstrator whenever it was time for her Dad’s guest lecture.

But a fulltime TA? It sounded like too much work, her powers were not applicable to the greater magical population, and most importantly, she really wanted to get back to doing her auratube show. Especially now that she was bound to have so many new subscribers thanks to her newfound fame for helping to defeat the Coven.

Jordan had considered doing a series about the Isle mission against the Coven in order to get the story straight and not create too wild legends regarding their month and a half there. And okay, there was also the fact that she wanted to renew her hits after losing subscribers after not posting for a month.

But she ultimately decided not to. It was their mission, only they’d get what happened in that wild untamed place of evil and poverty. Besides, it was very personal and she didn’t want to have to go into her fights with Aziz and Jay on Auratube. Or her encounter with Antiquam.

No she’d rather not think about the latter for a very long time.

Dismissing those thoughts she scrolled through several more posted announcements like the newly formed Minority Kingdom Council made up of representatives from Atlantis, Atlantica, Arrendelle, Kuzcoropia, and Pydrian, who were overrun by environmental and tourism concerns as Alexandria brought up. There was also a new class of Vks that were coming in. Basically the teen population of the Isle.

The orphans and kids from the Isle were sent to boarding elementary schools around Auradon as well as foster care with professional trained therapists for the abused youngsters.

Ben’s decision to bring the whole teen population in had been a controversial one. But he had stood by it, stating that he was taking the advice of his people, the ones from his generation who were to make up the future generation and a schoolwide vote had agreed that the Vks should be let in.

Granted it had taken a two month lobbying campaign led by Mal and Evie with Lonnie, Carlos, Jane and Jay’s help. But they did, they persuaded lots of royal kids that it was better to bring Vks over. It also helped that Mal, Jay, Evie, Carlos and Uma had been pronounced Auradon’s saviors thrice in a row so…

Though it wouldn’t be until August that all the Vks, with a few exceptions like the resolutely bad CJ Hook and Prince Lars, and Antiquam, would be able to get to Auradon. But they would, Uma was making sure of it. Even Zevon and Ginny were coming despite their actions in proudly helping the Coven, Ben believed they just needed to be removed from the negative influences of their mothers.

Some Vks had already come over like Carlos’ cousin. Diego had refused to enter the VK program through school, but through the work progrm. Now he and his band, Rotten Apples, could introduce Isle grunge rock to Auradon’s farmer populations and inspire them to use music to express themselves. Carlos informed them that Diego wasn’t too into that inspiration and empowerment stuff, but he was loving the popularity. And he often crashed to the Radcliff house to catch up with Carlos and get a break from his adoring fans.

Harriet Hook, also in the work program, was working in Neverland, serving as guard for docks and a pretty mean one too, Jordan heard. Any tourist that tried to sneak

Not that everyone was residing in the homes of their parents’ enemies. Celia Facilier was living with her sister Freddie, and Freddie’s girlfriend, Ally at the Mad for Tea Shop. Also as a student by day and helping her sister as the evening entertainment at night. Singing only. FG was still wary of introducing such sketchy magic as card readings. Celia did choose to be a TA to her sister’s class, Goodness 101. Freddie was taking over for FG to make it a revamped, less patronizing seminar of how to act in Auradon with Ally popping in for politeness lessons and Carlos with therapy dogs. Though FG still stayed in the room to supervise and make sure the class stayed on track and not turn into “Everything that’s wrong about sappy sweet Auradon.”

Dizzy was reunited with her mother, her aunt Anastasia, her uncle, the Baker and Anthony Tremine and they lived in the faculty building of Auradon Prep. Easy for Anthony and Dizzy to get to school and for the Baker to go to his new job as school cook.

His baguettes were to die for, so flaky and crispy. Even Chad reluctantly agreed to their goodness when she interviewed him for student reactions to the new cook. Anastasia and Drizella were the new cosmeticians in training at the school’s day spa even though the two still argued over what was a better color and such.

Also working in Auradon’s kitchen were Gil, and Cosette’s mothers who had taken in their other’s sister’s sons, Gaston Jr, Gaston the Third and Gaston (IV) the Great. Their mother had been deemed just as abusive as Gaston and was to stay on the Isle with him. Gil had been nervous about living with his brothers again but he had Cosette by his side and Harry and Uma just a street away. Harry was just as fiercely loyal as ever to his crew and to Uma, who he’d wait for outside of Ben’s office, waiting for their meetings to end.

Gil also had Jay on his side. And though Jordan had absolutely no proof, she just felt something between them, and she was planning to use this summer to sniff out just what it was.

It had been more controversial to bring back some adult villains like Anastasia and Circe, but Ben had explained that he was not in the business of tearing families apart and adults were able to change too. Smee, for instance, wanted to retire from swabbing desks and wanted his second act in life to follow his lifelong dream. Be a clockmaker, ironically enough considering his boss’ fear of the ticking. Same with other low level henchmen like Jace and Harry, and Hun soldiers that had been following the battle orders and propaganda Shan Yu had fed them.

Ben had promised not all adults would come over, especially not ones that had abused their children, and that he, Mal and Uma were designing a careful vetting process for this program.

As for the Auradonian bred villains. Morgana and Morgaine hadn’t stayed in the dungeon for long. One day the guards had come down to give their food and they were just gone. No one knew where they went and no magic had been able to locate them. Merlin said it was no use trying. The Le Feys were tricky and wouldn’t reappear again unless they wanted to.

Kyro, Victoria and Alexandria were in therapy now in a new building away from the dorms and those who would shun them for their actions like the media that had reviled them when the news leaked out. It was a bit of a depressing building Jordan thought since one could see it if they leaned far out their windows. The outside of it looked like an insane asylum but Evie enthused about how open- aired and peaceful it was inside. The point of it was to clear the outside world, and focus on healing. What’s more, since Uma learned of FG’s somewhat oblivious and condescending advice from Alexandria, they hired a new counselor. A Dr. Mickey Mouse.

So yeah, things seemed to wrapping out into a happily ever after for all.

Jordan walked into a door, rubbing her head of the bruise and cursing herself for not looking up. Tucking the phone in her pocket, she was about to open the door when Aziz opened it for her, heading inside from hanging out on the hammock.

He didn’t even look at her as he entered, he was busy chatting on the phone with who else, his new girlfriend.

Aziz had stayed true to his word that he and Lala were just friends, and remained just friends for three months. It had irritated Jordan to no end to watch them sneak discreet looks, study together since Lala only knew the Atlantean alphabet and not the English, and dance around their feelings as if the obvious wasn’t there. And it took all her self control to honor her vow to not meddle and send a flying carpet in to speed things up.

At least Aziz did not shut her out completely and still went to her advice for what to do when he asked her to be his girlfriend.

“What if she says no? Or doesn’t know what that is. Jay did say it was only gang activity. Or maybe she’ll just say no because she thinks she’ll go crazy like her mom. But I really want her to say yes. Oh Allah, what if I mess it up instead by acting like an idiot. Or she already thinks that. I walked into a wall yesterday.”

“Aziz, she likes you,” Jordan reassured him, “I’ve seen the way she looks at you. Like a leopard with dinner, she totally wants to eat you. In a sexy, hungry with desire way. Not cannibal way. And really, walking into a wall? That’s not a dealbreaker or even embarrassing. If you want to talk about embarrassing, nothing can top the time you popped in front of that yoga instructor you were trying to impress.” “I had food poisoning from the oysters!” Aziz yelled indiginantly.

“Doesn’t change the fact that you shitted during downward dog,” Jordan smirked at Aziz’s flustered angry face, “Nor was it like that time when you tried to impress Anxlin with a butterfly knife and ended up-”

“Will you stop bringing up the past?” Jordan decided to change tactics and be the serious, comforting big sister that he wanted, “Just speak from the heart. You’re on the same page with so many things, and you talk so much. Sooo much, it’s kinda annoying. Especially when you’re yapping in my room when I’m trying to watch a movie. But anyway, I think when the time comes your heart will guide you to say the right thing. And if not… your lips can speak for you.”

So with that fabulous advice if Jordan said so herself, on the last day of school, before they went their separate ways for vacation. Aziz went to her room and asked her.

And while she said she wouldn’t meddle, Jordan totally turned into a bee to go through the keyhole and eavesdrop on their conversation. For moral support. Just Aziz didn’t know about it.

It was endearingly awkward as Aziz stammered through some rambling monologue of how he liked her a lot, and only if she was okay with it, but he really thought they had something so woud she maybe consider being his girlfriend.

Aziz should probably have gotten some lessons from Jay on the art of smooth, but Lala seemed to get it. “So if we’re in a relationship we do what we do now… but with kissing?” she clarified.

“Yes!” Aziz agreed eagerly, then tried to dial down his excitement, “I mean sure, if you want.”

“I would really like that,” Lala bit her lip nervously but her expression was hopefully as Aziz leaned in.

Their kiss was short, two seconds at the most. Jordan would have given it a three out of five. It was unsure and the two seemed to be surprised they even did it. But it was clear from the look in their eyes, that they only saw each other and the rest of the world was already fading away for them, that that small kiss was perfect to them.

So they kissed again. Much more purposefully this time. Oh Allah, Jordan was so proud when Aziz added some passion and slipped tongue first. He was really growing up.

And they kissed again, and again and soon they were making out on Lala’s bed, which was starting to get kinda gross and Jordan was feeling weird about watching them. So she took that as her cue to leave.

But now she had plenty of new things to annoy Aziz about so she took it as a plus.

Grabbing him by the arm to stop, Jordan grabbed his camera.

“Hi, Lala, how are you?” Jordan waved, mugging for the camera as Aziz grabbed it back, and tried to push her out of the frame. The white-haired girl was dressed up in Evie’s new line of summer clothes with her hair up in a bun, and most startingly, her brown eyes were human.

It was silly that Jordan was surprised by Lala’s human eyes, she had been the one to change them when in a burst of good will offered all their allies on the adventure a wish. Lala hadn’t used the offered three wishes, just one, which was to remove the leopard spell Queen La had put on her. She lost her cat eyes and the habit of walking on all fours, but she still had her cat-like grace which Jordan chalked up to natural ability. It had been three months since that wish, but she had been so used to Lala’s cat-like slits with the dilated pupils. It had been a unique marker like the scar that everyone could see on Lala’s leg when she wore shorts.

“I’m well. Aziz sent me your new vlog about Odiferous, it was very interesting.” Lala nodded curtly. Jordan knew Lala was usually guarded against everyone so the coldness didn’t bother her as much as it used to. Thanks to hanging out with Aziz and Jade, she was starting to slowly warm up to people she wasn’t close to even though her tone didn’t reflect it.

“How are the Porters?” Jordan asked, cutting off whatever Aziz was about to say next. He glared at her, but she ignored. Hey, she said she’d stop mothering him. So now it was back to annoying big sister privileges.

“They’re well. Kerchak and I are going tree surfing tomorrow.” Lala answered. When Ben put up the invitation of Vks in need of foster homes or adoptive families, the Porters offered to take in Clay Clayton, and Lala. Clay refused and went with his Aunt, Lady Waltham who was thrilled to meet her surly nephew for the first time. Lala joined the Porters where she was helping their gorilla reserve, connecting with animals instead of hunting them for food and survival.

It was bound to be awkward considering their daughter’s actions, but Auradon seemed to consider it part of their penance even though they hadn’t known what Victoria had planned to wrought. But according to Lala, they did their best to skirt around that sensitive issue and treat her like a guest, and she was starting to befriend Kerchak. He even gave her a leopard of her own which she named Euware II though the pet made Tarzan a bit wary. Still, Lala had to stay in her room on weekends when Victoria visited from therapy.

“That’s great. When are you coming to visit? I know Jade is just dying for you to visit. It’d be fun. We can go sand surfing, oh and explore some of the caves under the citadel. Oh, oh and I just know Aziz wants to show you some of the secret alcoves in the palace. They’re great for making out and-” “Go away!” Aziz waved her off

“You want me to leave? But who will chaperon you two? Who will tell Lala all the embarrassing stories from your childhood? I’ve been holding onto blackmail for a reason, Aziz. I must tell her,” Jordan turned to the screen, “But seriously, come visit. I’ll leave you to it.”

“Thank you!” Aziz sighed in exasperation, “Give me 5 minutes, I’ll join you to go to the bazaar later, Jord.”

“See ya!” Jordan called over the shoulder as she headed to the palace kitchen, still hearing some snippets of Aziz’s conversation about his summer psychology classes. His new passion since Jordan had suggested that since he liked overanalyzing and counselling other people's problems, he could research into being a psychologist.

Upon reaching the outside, Jordan took a big breath of the sweet summer air with a hint of jasmine and the coconut and sighed.

Life was good.

Of course, life was always good when it was summer vacation but it was more than that. She had really committed to what she had learned on the Isle. She lived in the present now, and tried not to wallow in the anger and resentment that extended to almost every human she met.

Did that kind of positive mindset always work? Hell no, sometimes, someone would grab her arm, requesting for a wish, rubbing her jacket as if that was the lamp and not her. Yeah, that stupid event would irritate her all morning but she didn’t go into her spiral of how all humans were greedy monsters, her life sucked that she had to walk among them and so on and so forth. She learned to vent to Aziz and let it go.

She would always meet bad people in her life, when that happened, if the situation was appropriate, she would blow a mini sandstorm in their face and move on.

She’d also gotten more sensitive about complaining about humanity in front of Aziz. She tried to complain of an individual person and not make broad generalizations about the mortal race, and repeat that Aziz and his family were the exception.

Well Aladdin’s family, and Uma, and Jay, and Lonnie, and Calix and Ben, and she was starting to realize her circle of those she trusted was expanding.

It felt good to have that knowledge.

Even if Aziz might not always be there, though she’d kill him if he wasn’t, she still had others who cared about her.

Then again, she, Calix, Aziz, Jay and Uma had been through a harrowing adventure that nearly destroyed the world they knew, and had to face their greatest fears and insecurities to do so. If that didn’t make you trust a person, what would?

There were also her parents. Her parents always had her back.

That was another thing she’d been committed to doing since she got back from the Isle and saved Auradon.

Her parents had been the first ones to get there, magical teleportation after all and were laying out the blue carpet and making plans for the greatest party in all of Agrabah for their daughter, the hero. Instead of getting annoyed by their zany antics as usual, and annoyed at how they ignored the fact she faced possibly life-ending danger against their enemies, she just hugged them.

The act had clearly surprised them because both of their jaws broke off and fell to the floor before snapping back up like a ball. But they loved the change in her nonetheless.

Ever since then, she’d been going out with them every other weekend, be it ice skating on Saturn’s rings or clubbing or going out to drink in celebration of the banning of the Magic Ban.

She had thought for so long that if she let herself act even a little bit like them, she’d be signing herself to a fate of servitude, never being taken seriously, and becoming a negligent oblivious person who only wanted to focus on fun.

She had worried that if these things didn’t come naturally to her, she’d have to fake it in order to fit in and be palatable to her own parents. So they wouldn’t become bored with her. She hadn’t liked thinking about it, but she always felt that was the underlying reason they left her.

But she lived in the present now and shoved all those thoughts away. She did what she wanted without thinking of the implications. And she found that actively listening to what they were saying, how they constantly suggested ideas for their next adventure, how it was too bad she had school and couldn’t come with them to their trip. They didn’t think she was a damper on their party style, they wanted her to be with them. And she usually said to each invitation.

YOLO, right. Well more like YOLFSMAWEI.

(You Only Live Forever So Might As Well Enjoy It. Not as catchy but infinitely more accurate)

Family time was a lot more enjoyable that way instead of brooding that once it was over, they were going to forget about her and go about their lives as if they didn’t have a daughter.

Although, Jordan still did crave for a meaningful talk where she got to tell them about some of her issues with their lack of parenting oversight, and maybe delve into how abandoned she felt when they wouldn’t discuss such issues like her rape, they still weren’t ready for that.

Though Aladdin was talking to her dad on her behalf, and it seemed he was starting to soften to it.

Until then, she had two sets of parents. Aladdin and Jasmine, probably the first humans who she trusted, and respected. The first ones who saw her as a child and not a being for wishes. They gave her the love and attention she had craved when she needed it. They stood by treating her like everyone else, as she wished, even when it meant disregarding her excuses that her genie-ness exempted her from getting in trouble. They were always present her lives and were the ones that reminded her that her supposed fate was not a fate, that no one could shackle her, not unless they went through them. They encouraged that there other sides to her besides being a genie. That she should work hard, be kind, be honest and be independent.

Her mom and dad, who loved her with all their hearts and thought of her as their best friend. It wasn’t the most parental relationship but she had started to accept that it would never be. They were genie parents, not human ones, and it was finally sinking in that the rules would always be different from them. No matter that Jordan looked human and was raised by them. But that’s what made them special. No one else in the world would get her quite like her mom and dad.

Aziz opened the door, knocking her in the back and she moved over so he could wait beside her.

She checked her phone. Her parents were supposed to come here five minutes ago so they culd go to the bazaar together.

They probably weren’t going to come for another twenty minutes.

Ah genies, Jordan sighed, they were never going to be punctual. She wondered how many years it would be before she started viewing time as an unimportant mortal construct.

She was about to pose that question to Aziz, whether it would occur in his lifetime or in her 5,000s when a green and blue poof popped up in front of them.

“We’re here!” The two blew the smoke away to reveal the pair in matching red and white striped tuxedos with a blinking “Genie and Eden” sign hanging behind them.

“It’s Genie and Eden!” Eden announced

“Eden and Genie!” Genie intoned.

Then with a snap of a finger, the props and costumes disappeared, and Genie sat thoughtfully in the air, “We can’t quite choose which sounds better.”

Eden went back to a form-fitting black leotard with a black bowler hat, smoking a cigar in her best Liza Minelli voice, “Whaddya think, daughter dear, whaddya think?”

“I think we should go to the bazaar and have the people decide which is better.” Jordan suggested, knowing that if they did it here, they wouldn’t leave.

“By george, she’s right!” Genie exclaimed transforming into a nerdy account, “Statistically, it is always better to test things with a test audience, and according to my calculations that the Agrabah bazaar has the best cross-pool of audience with 10% bearded, 40% kids..” He transformed into his usually big blue self, “Aaand let’s get outta here!”

“Wait up!” Jay yelled, nearly running into the four of them with Jade at his side, “I wanna go to the bazaar too, there was that awesome scimir I wanted to buy.” “Yeah me too, I want to steal things too… I-I mean buy. Buy with money. That I did not steal from the mean guard.” “His name is Razoul, and you really shouldn’t. He already doesn’t like you.” Aziz shook his head.

“I don’t like him, and that’s what makes it so tempting.” Jade defended.

“Yeah, he kinda has it coming,” Jay agreed.

“Now, now, we won’t say anything about it. But you must stop,” Eden warned in a prim British accent, poofing into a blue serge suit like a certain famous nanny, “Now spit spot, hurry up, we don’t want to be late to the bazaar.”

Genie transformed into a Bert to his wife’s Mary Poppins, adding, “Come ‘ere ye kiddos and ‘urry it ‘up.”

Jay and Jade stared at each in the classic “What the hell?” expression that bystanders always had whereas her parents were concerned. Aziz and Jordan just shrugged and smiled.

And so they went off to the bazaar and as the sun beated down on them, and Jordan whipped up a hijab from air to keep off the heat, she hummed a familiar tune which Aziz and her dad easily picked up.

“As you wind through the streets at the fabled bazaars with the cardamom-cluttered stalls. You can smell every spice while you haggle the price of the silks and the satin shawls. Oh, the music that plays as you move through a maze in the haze of your pure delight. You are caught in a dance. You are lost in the trance of another Arabian night…”

Bad News of the Week:

On Friday, I got a message from my kids' school: there will be distance learning again next week, because the 7-day incidence is higher than 100. No surprise there, as the numbers have been steadily rising over the past few days. The surprise is in a side sentence. There it is mentioned that the school directors assume that until the end of the school year - that is with us in Bavaria at the end of July! - no more normal presence school might take place, but distance and shift learning in the change.

Wait a minute! We will all be vaccinated soon. And are tested twice a week. And it's getting warmer. Our sacrifices have to be worthwhile somehow. Are we losing confidence? Likewise, I read the day before yesterday that immunologists believe a booster vaccination will be needed in the fall. And then more vaccinations every year. Because the virus will continue to mutate, it's in its nature. And the new mutation from India seems to be somewhat immune to the current vaccines.

Wait a minute. Shouldn't the nightmare be over at some point? Shouldn't we have reached herd immunity by late summer? Shouldn't the pandemic be under control? The answer is simple: the pandemic will eventually be over. But not the presence of the coronavirus and its ever-expanding family. According to Wikipedia, a pandemic is defined as follows: "A pandemic is an epidemic of an infectious disease that has spread across a large region, for instance multiple continents or worldwide, affecting a substantial number of people." But how far does a virus mutation have to be from its progenitor to be considered a new virus? After all, we are currently battling "SARS-CoV-2." So there was already a SARS-CoV-1, in 2002 and 2003 to be precise, and this ancestor was also classified as a pandemic by the WHO. Is this never going to stop?

No. It's not going to stop. Neither the presence of the current coronavirus, because our poor handling of it allows it to survive. Nor can we rule out the outbreak of SARS-CoV-3 (or whatever its name will be), since our way of life - and we're not just talking about China here - not only favors but virtually forces the infestation of humanity by viruses from the animal kingdom. We will probably have to live with it. In the long term. The meaning of normality must be redefined. That's not bad news. That's plain and simply bad.

Good News of the Week:

Germany's conservatives have always been divided into two parties. In Bavaria there is the CSU (Christian Social Union), in the other (first 9, after reunification 15) federal states the CDU (Christian Democratic Union). At the federal level, there has always been closest cooperation possible. In parliament by means of a parliamentary group, in government by means of a coalition. Obviously a recipe for success, the CDU/CSU has been the chancellor in 15 of the 22 federal governments since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany. At the end of September this year, the 4th legislative period with Chancellor Angela Merkel will come to an end. And she will not run again. So the Union needs a new candidate for chancellor. So far, the Union sent 17 chancellor candidates from the CDU and 2 from the CSU into the race. The CDU was successful in 15 of 17 cases, the CSU in 0 of 2. So all clear for the upcoming nomination of the Union's candidate for chancellor? No.

There has been a power struggle in the CDU/CSU for a week now. The CDU's candidate is Armin Laschet, a moderately successful politician who is currently minister president in North Rhine-Westphalia. He has struggled to reach the top of the party and is seen as a suitable candidate for chancellor by only 17% of the conservative voter base. The CSU's candidate is Markus Söder, a classic power politician on a steady path to success who is currently the Minister President of Bavaria. He became party chairman as a self-runner and is seen as a suitable candidate for chancellor by 72% of the conservative voter base. So all clear for the upcoming nomination of the Union's candidate for chancellor? No.

Laschet announced last Sunday that he would be available as a candidate, of course. Last Monday he got the support of the presidium and executive committee of the CDU and assumed that, as the candidate of the larger of the two sister parties, he would have a "right of access" to the official candidacy. Söder also announced last Sunday that he would be available as a candidate. Won the support of the presidium and executive committee of the CSU last Monday and assumed to have a real chance as an option clearly leading in the polls. A parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday was not officially responsible, but important for a "mood picture" - after all, the prospect of individual members of the Bundestag retaining their seats also depends on the pulling power of the top candidate. The result was probably inconclusive. Surprising, considering that the clear majority belongs to the CDU.

In recent days, there have been endorsements and criticism from both camps. Many in the media are talking about a hanging game, which would not be good. Not for Germany, not for Europe and not for the world. Why, actually? After all, politics works like this: a politician tries to organize a majority for himself as a person or for his program. In order to take responsibility and implement what he stands for. A competition of ideas and positions. Democracy at work. It's nice that there's still room for this even in such difficult times. Now all that remains is to put a theory into practice: that the better man may win. Actually, it's quite simple.

Personal happy Moment of the Week:

Easter is the most important time in Christianity. Palm Sunday is also a part of it. On this day, palm bouquets, bound palm catkins from a willow tree, are blessed in church. Then you keep them at home for two weeks as a decorative messenger of springtime and then throw them away, when their life force vanishes. It's stupid because you're ripping out an early bloomer that's important for botany. So I had mixed feelings when a little willow seedling came into our house. Traditional and pretty, yes. But probably soon - like its Christmas counterpart, the poinsettia - in the organic waste garbage can. But our spring greeting has decided to survive: for a few days now it has been sprouting strong, fresh green. A vital sign of life energy. And encouraging, especially in these difficult times. Thank you, dear nature!

As I write this...

...I'm still in my pyjamas. There's nothing better than whiling away a Sunday cozy at home when it's uncomfortably cold and damp outside.

A Conversation With Doral Council Candidate Oscar Puig

As part of our election 2020 coverage, we are conducting interviews with all candidates for local office that have chosen to accept our interview request. All candidates have been contacted. Oscar Puig is a 20 year resident of Doral, a vital part of its founding, and an active leader and participant in many of the city’s civic organizations. He is running for Doral Council Seat #3. Oscar endorses J.C. Bermudez for Mayor and Claudia Mariaca for Council Seat #1. He has been endorsed by J.C. Bermudez. In this article, The Doralian is proud to present it’s first interview. Interview Transcript

Doralian: So, I want to start off by talking about your platform. Here at The Doralian, our goal is to inform the public. Unfortunately, many voters struggle to understand the stances brought by candidates for local office. Could you highlight maybe 2-4 pillars of your campaign that you want voters to know?

“1) Number 1, I would call continuation. We have built a wonderful city. Since I was involved in the creation of the city, I was one of the co-founders and we saw how the city deteriorated and zoning changes were made (before the city's incorporation and during Luigi Boria's mayorship) that weren’t supposed to be made and that's one of the things that I want to prevent. So, the continuation of these last four and the previous ones during JC's first years in office I think is important to maintain and have somebody that has the time invested like I do in the city for many years. That's one.

2) I think that with this pandemic, we will see a difficult time ahead of us because of budget shortfalls, as a lot of people are without a job. That's going to affect a lot of projects because of property taxes. People losing their homes. So I hope to be a voice to find solutions to help our residents, our business, so that if affected, we continue to ask the federal government, the state, and the county, for funds to help the citizens and the small businesses.

3) I am also big on two other things. One of them is small business. Aside and before the pandemic I was supported by 15 good, small sized business that have been here for a long time and I see that there's got to be a movement to help and facilitate the process of the city, which already started, I know that JC announced in their state of the union, several things that are going to help the small businesses and streamline the processes of the city, and I want to support that and make sure that small business can also do marketing events with the city. Marketing strategies with the city that can help them grow and ultimately push the theme that will help people understand that they can eat here, that they can play here, that they could have a good nightlife here, they can eat here. It's changed a lot, so you don't have to drive anywhere else. So, if we can, as a city, start a movement to keep people to spend within the city, they will help small businesses a lot.

4) The last one is the special needs and the elderly programs. I support them 100% and anything we can do to make them better. In the city of Doral, we have a lot of participants in Special Olympics. We have a great special needs program and I want to support them and the elderly of course, our most vulnerable, especially during these times when they're alone. So, look for ways that we can, even if it's digitally, help them not be alone and satisfy whatever needs they have.“

Doralian: The reason I’ve invited you here today is to try to highlight some of the distinctions between you and other candidates. My next question is, whether it involves your qualifications or policy stances, what makes you different from the other candidates?

“I don't think I like to talk about my differences with others. I'd like to say that my experience within the city, I've been involved since the year 2000, in many, many ways with schools, with the parks, with the city committees, selection committees, park director selection committees, and years back the city attorney selection committees. Important committees that I've participated in to service our community with my family and their families in mind. Just making sure that, like I said before, that we have a good transparent and effective government that represents the best interests of the residents at large, whether they vote or not. It's important to represent everybody and that the city is in good shape. My qualifications are my experience and dedication that I've given for the last 20 years to our city.”

Doralian: What is your individual take on the city’s public transportation system? What direction must the city turn to improve its public transportation infrastructure?

“As a city, for 20 years, we’ve done a lot to improve, but at the same time, we went from 20,000 to almost 70,000 residents, plus the 100,000 when we include all the people that come in and out of the city to work. It’s a positive, because we have a good base of employment and a good base of residents but at the same time it creates that whole complicated issue of traffic. I therefore believe that traffic is not just a Doral issue, I believe that Doral and every city in Miami Dade County and the County has to sit down and start looking for solutions of mass transit. Expand the rail. The growth we have had as an entire county has not been followed by investment needed in mass transportation. So, if we think of Doral only, we are not going to solve it, because when Palmetto and Turnpike are, you know, a bottleneck, there's hundreds of thousands of vehicles stuck there for hours, it's going to ripple down into the city because people cannot get on the highway, so then eventually creating traffic within the city. That's where we see most of the traffic, when people are going to get on the highway. And when you look at Doral during the weekend, we have very little traffic, if any, which is a great thing for us. So it's all created by this large base of businesses and residents that we have that are active during the week. So, I think this is a regional problem and we have to look at it that way, but continue to invest as a city: opening streets like we've done many, many times, we're now going to open 25th street to the turnpike, an exit and an entrance, so that's going to help traffic on 41st and 12th, even as high as 74th street. The major problem is regional, we have to make sure that we start investing in that and I want to be a loud voice to bring that to the table.”

Doralian: So, you mentioned rail for a second there and one mayoral candidate has proposed lobbying the county to bring rail to Doral. Do you support the expansion of Miami-Dade's Metrorail to Doral?

“I support it anywhere it goes. We will have to look at where and how, of course, those are things that are important, but in general, yes, that's what I'm talking about when I speak of mass transportation. But more than that I think Kendall area, a train from Kendall to the East and to the North is important, these are areas that are very effective because of the lack of mass transportation. Because we have rail here in Doral and some of our residents do take it. We have now a bus system that goes straight from the new area by 12th street all the way to downtown and those are great solutions. We need to continue this.”

Doralian: My next question is an attempt to understand what kind of development you would encourage while in office. I'd like to ask, in your vision of a future Doral, what does the city look like to you? Does it look more urban? Is there more mixed-use development like CityPlace or Downtown Doral in which residential districts are heavily mixed with entertainment districts? Or does it look more suburban, more classical Doral-like? Something like Doral Isles or Islands at Doral.

“That's what I'm talking about when I talk of a master plan. There's going to be areas that are going to be preserved as the more suburban, which is the West side of Doral, even though there was an application that was approved on 107th and 74th that brought some buildings. But still, now it's back on track, like the mayor says, so that shouldn't happen anymore. We have a good master plan now that prevents things like that from happening. I support that masterplan, we have to tweak it but yes, on the east side I support what's going on with Downtown Doral and CityPlace because one of the things that's going to prevent the traffic is the presence of an area where you can live, work, play, and learn. It's important because you don't have to get out and get in the car to do grocery shopping like it happens in Downtown Doral or take your kids to school or any of that. You know, you don't have to get out of that area at all. As a resident, you have it all there. That's a solution to traffic. People like it. I think a lot about the people that live in those areas and they enjoy it a lot. It's an easier life when you don't have to drive somewhere to eat or take the kids to school. I would embrace those.

Doralian: What specific policy proposals do you suggest for the city to help local struggling businesses?

I think again we have to find a balance, I think we are at a balance right now where you can go out and make sure that we continue to protect ourselves but at the same time closing businesses I don't think is the right solution. I think we have to, again, have a balance, make sure that businesses and people are following the CDC guidelines and whether they're in or outside the city. So, to me it’s important to have the economy moving because it could be a disaster later on to have the economy affected. But at the same time, we need to be proactive in getting involved and being part of the solution.

Yes, there is something that to me is very important. It's participation not only when you go out and vote but also participate as a resident in many ways and hopefully things will go back to normal soon and you can participate as a resident. Doing something that adds value to the city, to the residents, being part of the committees, getting involved with the parks, non-profits, the Chamber of Commerce, we are now going to have a Doral Contemporary Art Museum. See what's going on, the schools, the PTA, that's how I started, with the Chamber. To start getting involved and bringing solutions to the city I think is very important. I'm more than open to helping and guiding everyone that is interested in coming on board and knowing what I did and how I did it so they can do it better.

It became his biggest comfort when things went awry.

His father wasn’t kind by any stretch of the word. In fact, more often than not, the man’s frustrations with the other children, the “good kids”, would be unleashed on Peter as a stand in. Peter just took it, knowing no one in the pack would believe him anyway. They had done their best to shun him since he had learned a sense of control over his inner wolf that was uncanny because he wasn’t evolved, which was a hard trait in and of itself to receive. He spent many nights laying in his bathroom as wounds healed so he could clean without anyone’s notice. After a few years, Peter had a few young nieces and nephews he would tend to from time to time, but mostly he kept to himself. He continued to explore, eventually finding an old shack looking place that he began to rebuild in secret, eventually making a little house with working lights and keeping a path to the fall open from the little area around his home. Once it was complete, he often spent nights there, hidden from his family and buried in a mound of books about everything from old rituals to forgotten languages.

Academically, Peter excelled. By the time he was graduating Middle school, he was a star athlete, being recruited into the Beacon Hills High School basketball program with hardly a blink. He was the master of five languages by the time he met one Chris Argent; a young teen that Peter felt an instant connection to, drawn to the other male like a moth to flame. He found a good friend in Chris, someone who understood him and cared even when no one else did. Peter didn’t dare let anyone see he had a friend, let alone that he was falling for a human - he was already a disgrace in the family for his strange balance between human and wolf. So whenever they wanted to study, they would meet at a park or something of the sort. Eventually Peter showed Chris his little cabin, letting the other teen stay over, content to have Chris’ scent linger in a space only the two of them had. However, that content feeling began to vanish after a while, both human and wolf wanting more with Chris than just friends. With unsure reluctance, Peter found a way to tell Chris, stunned to find the other felt the same. The two knew it was something no one could ever know about, with Chris’ family being hunters and Peter’s family, although not violent or harmful, being werewolves.

Keeping their relationship hidden wasn’t hard; the pack Peter belonged to often didn’t realize he was gone as long as he was there for meals and Chris’ family wasn’t really talked about. Peter never pressed about them, knowing he really didn’t know anything about his family anymore aide from the fact that Talia was now alpha, and that he had more nephews and nieces around. Living separated from their respective worlds became a safe haven for Peter. Forgetting about the expectations of his pack, such as his supposedly new role as pack enforcer, gave Peter a kind of peace. He wanted to keep people safe, but not a t the cost of his own will should his alpha command it. He fell further for the younger male than he could have expected, not thinking that anyone could ever find out or even suspect how close he and Chris truly were. At least until he was ambushed after a practice and taken somewhere secluded, where he finally met the patriarch, Gerard. The meeting wasn’t warm, in fact, it was to give Peter one chance to keep Chris alive. He could leave and Chris’ life would be spared, or he could continue to see the young hunter and watch as Gerard himself cut the boy in two before he burned the entire pack. Fear for his mate took over, and Peter was petrified of watching Chris die in any way, let alone at the hands of his own father, so agreed to leave. He was young and stupid, and his worry for Chris kept him from realizing he could ask Chris to leave with him, cut all ties to both their families and just stay together. Leaving led him to the mountains for a while, where his balance wavered between which had more influence. When he returned, his oldest nephew had a human interest, and Peter longed to keep the pain he’d felt at losing Chris from happening to Derek, so he helped set up a way to make it happen, but it didn’t work, and in the end, Peter began trusting his wolf side more. And then Kate showed back up. Peter knew the scent, could see what was happening. Gerard wasn’t going to follow through with the entire agreement.

He immediately went to Talia, trying to explain what was going to happen without revealing his bond to Chris, but to no avail. Much like his childhood, he was merely a pawn under his sister. And when the fire occurred, the screams and smell of burning flesh surrounding him, Peter felt a sense of betrayal and sought to get out first before coming back for others. He managed to find a way out, but was trapped under a collapsing beam and although dragged out and kept alive, his body fell into a coma. The inner wolf had control, working to heal the burns so severe Peter should have died. Trapped, Peter was unable to do anything as what was left of his pack disbanded, disappearing until the only visits he got were from doctors and nurses to check his vitals and how well the burns were healing. Left to the silence of his own mind, the human side of Peter was lost more and more with each passing day until at last the wolf had full and unrestricted access to everything Peter was. And the results were not going to be pretty. Quite literally out of his mind, Peter began searching for a way to boost what little healing was left. He ended up killing his niece, Laura, who was also the pack alpha. The strength was such a surge that the side in control lost it’s grip and Peter ended up a cold, almost heartless monster. He killed anyone responsible that he could find, regardless of how close they were to the start of or the cover up of the blaze.

When the Argents returned to town, the monster Peter had become was aware time was almost up, and it was ready for the final battle. It found its way into having a pack; turning a young teen named Scott in the process [and entirely unaware of what was to become of his first beta]. He took away the will and had no problem shedding blood of all kinds. But a line was crossed when Derek went missing and Kate’s scent was everywhere. The bitch had finally returned. And now it was time to complete the circle of vendetta. Kate would be the last one of those involved and her blood would be what he enjoyed the most in taking. His move to kill the renegade met him face to face with Allison - who wore the Argent family crest around her neck and was coated in a scent Peter knew all too well…Chris. Unable to bring himself to kill the girl, he had every intention of letting her go and escaping, but was stopped, ultimately dying at his nephew’s hand. Good thing a backup plan was already in motion.

Peter had bitten Lydia on purpose, knowing full well what she was before she did and awakening the abilities. Using her, he cast a spell that brought him back and he moved to take a place in the pack his nephew had begun to make, only to watch it scatter all over again. That summer was spent searching mindlessly for Erica and Boyd along Isaac and Derek, and Peter grew restless, concerned that they couldn’t pick up the scent. Finding out why led to yet another war having been drawn in. The alpha pack wanted two of the rarest alphas, and Peter felt some pride in helping make Scott what he was. But it began to come to a head when Jennifer Blake manipulated his nephew to get what she wanted and nothing else. That kind of treatment left that gaping hole from the loss of his family seethe, and Peter made sure to rake his claws through Jennifer’s neck where Deucalion had already sliced through the woman.

Now, long after the deadpool, Kate’s coming back with berserkers at her bidding and Peter’s using her to try and get the power back he knew he could control, Peter has escaped the end result of Eichen House and has reclaimed the power of alpha from a rogue named Ashelina, who was out to gut everyone in Beacon Hills one ata time until she had the town on its knees for her. Having met Peter first, the she-wolf didn’t last long and was found torn up by authorities.

Why did Windy attack his partner?

Now that’ve finally seen the face of Windy’s partner there’s no more Lost Children to be revealed. But still we don’t have all the answers just yet. Even though Jin has been a big part of the latest arc, we still don’t know much about him and neither do we actually know Lightning and Windy. So what are their reasons for turning against humanity? Why does Lightning keep Jin as a puppet? And why did Windy hurt his Lost Child?

Starting off with Windy, what exactly do we know about him? It is clear he prefers his AI lifestyle, having a program of his creation carrying him around and living in his AI world. He also wants everything to go his way, loses his temper when things don’t turn out the way he wants and hates to be seen weak. Each Ignis in a way represents a different child behaviour: Flame is the cool kid, Aqua is the caring kid, Earth is the shy kid, Ai is the airhead/playful kid, Lightning is the intellectual kid. And Windy? He is the bratty kid. A spoiled child that is used to having his way and throws a tantrum whenever things don’t go his way.

It is still not clear if the Ignis are based on their Lost Children completely but considering their behaviour –Ignis are their Lost Children’s six year old selves. Yusaku did appear to be friendly, outgoing and cheerful before lost incident just like Ai is right now. Judging from the photos, Takeru did try to look cool. Spectre wasn’t keen on interacting with other kids. Miyu was nothing but kind and caring towards Aoi. We don’t know much about Jin’s time before the incident, but he might’ve been intellectual and interested in a lot of things like Lightning. Windy’s child on the other hand might’ve been the exact opposite – a spoiled brat if not a school bully. It would also make sense why he was picked �� maybe he acted all high and mighty over being the best duellist at school like Seto Kaiba in the first series and was actually really good. So he would make a good test subject.

But even an overconfident child would break under the torture of Lost Incident. School bullies often become helpless the second someone with more power appears and in this case it was his opponent. Something must’ve broken in that child – he no longer had the power and was at the mercy of the Lost Incident. Just like the rest with an exception of Spectre he must’ve cried, was in pain and without hope of ever getting out. Maybe he started thinking he deserved it and was determined to get out in order to redeem himself, therefore becoming stronger.

Windy hates being seen weak and hates the word weak in general. He is convinced that humans are weak and teaming up with them makes Ignis weaker. His hatred of weakness might reflect the one of his Lost Child – how he hated being weak and so he did everything in order to feel more powerful. But one things that strikes me as well is how unknowingly gullible Windy really is. It’s quite obvious Lightning is the mastermind behind everything, but Windy does act like his right hand. There were numerous occasions where Windy could’ve acted on his own, but no - he is following Lightning’s orders – he wanted to go after Ryoken, but he didn’t because Lightning told him not to. The hatred of humans might’ve even come from Lightning. Windy doesn’t appear to be a type of a person to really think much before doing something, he bluntly does what he wants and what Lightning tells him to do. So what if it was Lightning who told him to take care of his Lost Child?

But why would Lightning want Windy’s origin out of the picture? He trapped Jin’s soul, put Miyu in a coma so why not removing another Lost Child? Lightning doesn’t want Ignis to be influenced by their origins that had changed over the years and due to their experiences from the Lost Incident.

Both Ai and Flame might’ve greatly changed once meeting their origins. Aqua has learned enough to disagree with Lightning’s plans even before meeting Miyu and Aoi. Spectre wasn’t an issue since he worked for Knights of Hanoi and even if he were to become one he can’t now. Jin is still stuck in Lost Incident since he never really recovered so he makes a perfect puppet for Lightning. But Windy’s child? He might’ve been the one to change the most.

It is quite clear that Lost Incident greatly damaged the lives of innocent children. Yusaku developed PTSD, Takeru became a shut-in, Spectre became fascinated with disturbing things, Jin became trapped in his own mind, Miyu might’ve also suffered in some way. But Windy’s child? He appears to be just like any other school boy, living his life, hanging out with his friends and talking about the future. He is living exactly the same life that Akira wanted for Yusaku. But how can this be? How did he recover from all of this?

I think Windy’s child saw Lost Incident as a chance to fix mistakes of his past. Maybe the thought of becoming stronger kept him going until the end of the experiment and once he was rescued he used the experience as the lesson. He might’ve had treatments for few years, but then he recovered and strove for better future. He wanted to become the best version of himself, leaving the past behind. If Windy were to reconnect with him, he could’ve seen a brighter side of life and therefore try to change from the six year old mentally he once was. But Lightning didn’t want that to happened – he needed a loyal ally and out of all Ignis, Windy was the easiest to manipulate.

So he fed him every lie and assumption about humanity he could. He analysed Windy just like every Ignis and knew well how self-conscious is Windy about being weak. He was a perfect minion but to make sure he stays loyal he had to remove the only obstacle that could change Windy. Judging from school uniform in the flashback, Windy’s child was either in middle or high school when the car crush happened – so it must’ve happened recently and quite possibly around the time Ai left Cyberse World. Maybe Lightning saw how Ai became attached to Yusaku and since Dark Ignis was vital to his plan, he feared it could change other Ignis as well. So to secure at least one Ignis to his side, he choose to manipulate Windy and used his weakness to turn against his origin and therefore humanity as well.

Remember when Knights of Hanoi nearly killed Windy? Lightning just stood there, watching a fellow Ignis literally melt away and didn’t do a thing until Ai shouted his name. All was a part of a plan. Lightning probably sees Windy the same way he saw Haru – someone who obediently follows his every command. But unlike Haru, Windy is higher on Lightning’s scale of importance since he has free will though still – even with free will he is gullible and easy to manipulate. As he was slowly wasting away he was no longer of use to Lightning but when Ai shouted his name, Lightning used the opportunity to declare war between Ignis and humans and took Windy with him to use him further. While he was recovering Lightning continued to ignite his hatred so he may become strong enough to defeat the rest of Team Playmaker. The hatred may made him stronger, but at the same time it is making him lose his cool which he even points out himself. Perhaps Windy is now a second Haru – someone who is there only to buy time.

To conclude – I believe that it was Lighting who made Windy hate his Lost Child and humans in the first place. Perhaps Windy didn’t like his origin for the fact how much he changed or how miserable he was during the first days of Lost Incident. Windy hates weaknesses and Lightning saw an opportunity to shape him into his liking. Or maybe Windy hated how fast his Lost Child recovered, leaving his past and consequently him behind as well. He hated being abandoned and he might be even secretly jealous of Ai and Flame with their partners, but he is too proud to admit it and rather hides behind Lighting’s great plan. It could as well be possible that he wasn’t satisfied how his partner turned out to be and he hated his new life, refusing to accept that his origin had the least experience.

Who knows – it could be entirely different reason as well. In any way, I’ll further discuss it once the new episode is out.

Special education students find extra challenges in home learning

Before the pandemic, Tara Arnett’s two children, Logan, 10, and Reagan, 8, went to public school like most kids in Columbia.

Logan, who has autism, was in his special education class, and Reagan, who received speech therapy, attended four sessions a week. After school, they rode the bus to day care and got picked up about 5 p.m., when Arnett was done with work.

Now, like many parents, Arnett, 37, juggles taking care of her kids while she and her husband work full time amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

She works from home, allowing her more time with her children, but Logan needs more than just worksheets and Reagan misses out on practicing speech.

As Columbia Public Schools fine-tunes remote learning, some students in special education and their families feel lost in the reshuffle.

Nearly 2,000 of the district’s more than 19,000 students have learning disabilities. Depending on the severity of the disability, these students may face challenges more acutely.

Difficulties include moving their learning environments home, losing access to therapy and classroom materials, and regressing in what they know and how they behave.

When the district first announced that school buildings would close, elementary school students were sent home with a two-week packet of activities. Students in sixth through 12th grades were also offered activities through online platforms such as Schoology.

McKenzie Skoog, a special education teacher at Parkade Elementary School, had two days to put her packets together because she learned about the district’s closures when everyone else did.

She said she did her best to prepare worksheets that would exercise students’ skills but that she knew they would be closer to review or busy work.

“My goal was to give something that would be helpful to try to not lose skills over the break,” Skoog said.

‘School is school, home is home’

The classroom environment seems vital for many students with special needs.

Erica Lembke, department chair of special education in MU’s College of Education, said the classroom is more than just a classroom for students with special needs: There’s relationship building, communication and socialization training, behavioral modeling and other aspects teachers embed into daily learning.

“For our kids who have more significant needs, it’s even things like mobility and toilet training,” Lembke said. “It can’t be addressed just through packets of worksheets.”

Arnett’s son, fifth-grader Logan, has autism and needs one-on-one attention when it comes to schoolwork. He also struggles with discerning environments.

“School is school, home is home, and crossing those over is not something that he necessarily is ready to do,” Arnett said.

When Skoog was still in the classroom, she found that when her students struggled with learning difficult subjects, it sometimes elicited negative behavior. She said while she’s trained in how to navigate that, some parents aren’t.

“A lot of times kids act differently at school than at home,” she said. “It’s like, ‘My parent is now my teacher, so how do I sit down and do work that’s hard for me with my mom or dad?’”

Another challenge is that critical resource providers like speech, occupational or physical therapists are no longer able to work in person with their students. Their particular lessons are harder to replicate online, since so much of their work is hands-on.

Arnett said Logan’s specialists help him maximize his efficiency, and while she does her best to work with him, she isn’t the perfect replacement for a trained educator. Reagan’s speech therapists provided exercises, but she hasn’t had a meeting since school closed.

“I’m a mom and not a teacher,” she said.

Alyse Monsees, director of special services in the district, said special education teachers have been working with families to figure out how to continue building on what students already know.

“We’re making sure we’re not asking parents to work on new skills,” she said. “We’re encouraging our teachers to figure out what the parents want or what they’re ready for.”

She said educators have been working with parents on how to adapt lessons learned in class, with the resources and materials teachers have, to what can be learned at home. For example, if students are learning how to sort, they can do so by separating laundry or even kitchen utensils, Monsees said.

Monsees said teachers have been providing families with supplemental activities like scavenger hunts for shapes around the house, links to story time and songs online and even sending home activity bags.

‘A pandemic-induced slump’

Zoom, an online video conference app, has been a mainstay for educators and families to keep in touch and hold classes. The needs of special education students vary, making it difficult for classes to organize.

For example, Skoog said her students can Zoom with their regular classes, but she’s unable to bring them all together in a Zoom session of her own due to confidentiality policies in special education.

Instead, she keeps in touch through emails, postcards and phone calls.

“Individually and selfishly, I’m sad I don’t get to see (my students),” she said. “I miss them.”

Jessica Bock, a student teacher at Battle High School, said her special education class meets via Zoom twice a week for 30 minutes. She said some students are excited to get on Zoom, while others miss school and don’t understand the change.

“Nothing beats being at school, where it’s a social outlet for kids,” Bock said.

Individual Education Program meetings, which keep special needs students on track toward their goals for the year, are still happening via Zoom or phone call, Monsees said.

Because in-person classes are canceled for the rest of the academic year as well as summer school, the summer slump — the regression of skills students experience over a long break away from school — seems inevitable. It might impact students with special needs harder.

“This is a pandemic-induced slump,” Lembke said. “Teachers in the fall will have to work even harder to get back those skills.”

Students in transitional IEPs (from middle to high school, for example) may be feeling a little lost, Lembke said. “These are critical months for them,” she said.

Monsees said IEP teams and the district were waiting to hear from the state on what compensatory learning for students with special needs will look like.

“We’re still looking for guidance as we navigate these waters,” she said. “This is more than just one student who may need compensatory services; it’s the nation.”

To persevere against the difficulties of learning from home, Arnett said she and her family set aside time for fun. When it’s warm enough outside, they’ll go for a swim. They take long walks. Inside, they play video games together.

Second-grader Reagan took up learning how to ride a bike, even though Arnett said she was reluctant to try before.

“There are other things to learn and to concentrate on,” Arnett said. “There are other things we can get out of this situation that don’t necessarily have to do with homework.”

In making decisions, the district’s No. 1 priority is the health, safety and well-being of everyone, Monsees said.

“Academics are important, but that’s at the forefront,” she said.

“Are my families safe, are they healthy, do they have food to eat?” Skoog said. “On top of that, if you get work done, that’s a bonus.”
