HAJIME IWAIZUMI: JUNE 10TH
The clock in your living room reads 11:55 in the evening; Hajime’s birthday is five minutes away.
You both have work in the morning, so you should be in bed sound asleep. Everything has been done as normal; the whole nighttime routine of eating dinner (that you insisted on making) together, showering, brushing your teeth. Except instead of completing the routine by cozying up in bed, you’re cozying up on your living room couch, the light in the kitchen on, and the blue light from the TV keeping your tired eyes in a trance.
Hajime’s arm is lazily outstretched over your shoulders, your fingers intertwined with the hand that dangles beside your head. His other arm is bent sideways on the couch pillow, head against his fist as he watches through bleary eyes the movie in front of him. Though your eyes are trained on the action on the TV, your ears don’t process the mumbling that pairs with it, too engrossed in your low conversation about each others’ day.
“—and Hinata wanted something more to do for himself, so I’ll be reviewing his progress and seeing what I can do. Seriously, the guy is a monster at times. Sometimes it’s hard to believe I’m really looking at him, with how far he’s come since his high school days.”
“They all seem to be of another caliber now,” you replied somewhat drowsily, yet no less engaged.
“They’re intense, that’s for sure,” he sighs, bringing his head to rest behind the cushion and leaning closer toward your own. “But they’ve always been like that.”
He’s completely unaware of the time and date approaching as he drones quietly about the day he’s had. He notices, on occasion, your glances up at the wall where your clock was located, and thought you were anxious to get to sleep.
“Hey,” he nudges your knee with his own. “you wanna head to bed?”
“Hm? No, no, not yet. Keep talking, I wanna hear.”
Upon your insistence, he obliged reluctantly, resuming his chatter for a little while longer as you hum and nod.
He feels comfortable like this, with your head against his chest, body snuggled close to his side, the low hum of the TV, the dim light. He, for a moment, finds his eyes gently closing unconsciously. You wait for him to continue his explanation at a pause, but are only met with the quietness of the TV. A slight stir prompts Hajime’s eyes to open immediately, and he shifts a little as he takes in your face, peering up at him through small eyes.
“Haji.”
“Mm?”
“You sleeping?”
“M’not.”
You placed a hand on his chest as you turned your body to look at the clock. It now reads 12:04 in the morning. You rub your eyes and reach for the phone on the coffee table in front of you, and when it blinks to life, it blinds you with the time and the new date.
June 10.
“Ugh, put that away,” Hajime groaned as he turned away from the straining light on your phone, lolling his head to the other side against the couch cushion. You quickly slid it back onto the table, and then collapsed again against your boyfriend’s chest, hugging his middle tightly and digging your chin into his chest as you looked up at him with a wide smile.
“Happy birthday, Haji.”
His eyes reopen slightly, and he angles his head toward the clock to view the time for himself: 12:05.
He tucks his chin in so he meets your gaze and the sweet, tired smile on your face, and finds one of his own, tired yet tender, slowly propping up the apples of his cheeks. So that’s why you had been eyeing the clock, all for him and his silly birthday. Of course it would be you who remembers his birthday before he even does. You were sweet and thoughtful in that way.
“So that’s why you wanted to stay up a little longer, huh?” His tone is a faux annoyance for only a moment before his arm around your shoulders curls a little tighter in endearment, and he knocks his forehead against yours, gently and playfully, as you let out a short giggle at the gesture. “Thank you, baby.”
“What do you wish for?”
“To get some rest,” he yawned as he pulled away, going to sit up from the couch.
“Why would you say that? Now it won’t come true!”
Your weight on his lap and arms now thrown around his neck anchored him to the couch. He gives you a deadpan look as a hand finds its way rubbing gently up and down your lower back, while the other slowly snakes itself under your legs.
“Oh, I’ll make it come true.”
You squeal when he sits up and scoops you up in one swift motion, and you throw your head back in quiet laughter as he walks the two of you to your bedroom.
“Haji, you know, it's your birthday. I should be the one carrying you.”
He snorts, and shakes his head. “ It’s my birthday, right? I get to do what I want.”
KOSHI SUGAWARA: JUNE 14TH
Sugawara was dejected when he realized he had to work on his birthday.
As if the universe was taunting him, this year it fell right on a Friday, just one day off from the weekend.
If he were honest, however, it wasn’t too much of a bother. He mentally groaned about it the evening before and morning of, but all in all, his birthday was a fleeting thought in his mind. Work and everyday busyness replaced the thought with lesson plans and mental preparedness to handle a classroom of young children after an exhausting week.
He hoped, at the very least, however, that you would recognize the oddness of the day, do a little something to acknowledge it. Maybe a small cake or a nice breakfast. Maybe a little present. Hell, just a small, intimate murmur of a happy birthday accompanied with a sweet kiss would elevate his heart. Yet every time he looked on at you, you were preoccupied with preparing yourself for work, just as Suga was. No fancy breakfast was prepared, no gift sat on the table by the door, and the only kiss he was able to snag was a hurried one on the cheek as you wished him a good day, and headed out the door and into your car.
So Suga’s birthday was not off to a great start.
But again, it’s only a birthday. He almost feels a little dumb, getting all worked up over it, especially as an adult. So he makes the most out of the day as he always does with his kids and their lively attitudes, plus the wind down time and lack of work reserved for Friday’s brightens his special day from the dejected morning he experienced earlier.
Little did your boyfriend know of the plans you had in store for him.
As humble as Sugawara attempted to be about his birthday, you knew that he liked having it acknowledged. He was appreciative of any and all kind birthday gestures, from simple greetings to thoughtful presents. And you wanted your present for him to be thoughtful. Memorable. Surprising, exciting, and able to convey the sheer amount of affection you hold for him, though you doubted that any gesture could entirely convey such a thing. But your mission this year was to sure try.
You had taken the day off to get everything under way. Pick up a nice cake you ordered a few days before, with Suga’s favorite flavor of icing and batter, along with a neat and heartfelt Happy Birthday written on top in cursive.
Once the cake was tucked away in your fridge, your next stop was a party store. Perhaps you may have overdone it with the decorations, you had thought to yourself when you examined your two (full) shopping bags as you walked back to your car, but there was just so much to choose from, and you were sure Suga would like it all! Banners, balloons of impressive and wacky sizes and shapes, streamers, confetti, party poppers; you couldn’t pass up a single thing, not when you imagined his enthusiasm over each one.
Your final stop was for restocking on foods and drinks. Besides the cake, you bought a couple of bottles of fancy alcohol (the one’s he’ll often eye and make fun of how posh they sound), a couple of his favorite snacks and beverages, and the like.
By the time Suga arrived home from work, he’s exhausted, yet somehow invigorated by the idea of seeing you. He lets himself into the house with his key, letting out a tired I’m home, heart picking up when he spots your shoes neatly organized in the genkan, and joins his own beside them as he pads further into your home toward an alluring smell.
The light is low in your living room. It’s enveloped in a yellow glow compared to the blinding bright white that startles him awake and strains his tired eyes in the morning. The first thing that comes into his line of sight, besides you, already in comfortable clothing with your back turned and managing something on the table in front of you, is a neat and beautiful cake on the coffee table in front of your couch.
Your living room is full of more animated color than usual; batches of balloons occupy the corners and a few are scattered, some hovering aimlessly, on your floor. A Happy Birthday banner hangs from above the threshold into the room. Suga, once the initial shock and surprise wore off and was able to fully comprehend that it was all for him, felt that he may burst into tears.
You hurriedly turned around upon sensing a new presence in the living room, and gasped when it was none other than your boyfriend, briefcase in hand, and staring dumbfounded at you and the sight of your decorated living room.
Ko! I didn’t expect you to be home this soon!”
“Traffic was sparse.” He managed to get out past the lump in throat, but once he realized how stupid he appeared, he shook his head in an attempt to feign nonchalance. “So! What is, uh…what’s all this?”
Your brows shot up, and you gave him an exasperated smile before walking over to him. “It was supposed to be a surprise,” you said slyly, wrapping your arms around his neck, with Suga immediately reciprocating with a hand to your back. “I was still setting up some stuff because I was under the impression that I still had some time before you came home.”
“Oh, so you wanted me to get stuck in traffic, is that it?” He teases in a faux annoyed tone, but it’s quickly betrayed by the smile that immediately stretches back over his face.
“In this instance, yes!” You laughed, grinning yourself when he began to pepper kisses all over your neck and face, curling his arm around your waist to keep you secure against him. You laughed breathlessly through the assault, attempting to push away the ticklish sensation. But Suga’s energy had just been replenished fully, and his heart elevated the highest it ever could.
“It’s perfect, all of it. Thank you.” he halts his assault to mutter against your skin through his lovesick smile, and it brings a grin to your own lips as you bring him in for one final kiss on his lips, one he immediately attempts to deepen.
“Okay, okay,” you laugh as you pull away when he whines and chases after your lips. “Now that you’re here, let’s sing!”
He laughs too, letting you drag him further into your living room, abandoning his briefcase by the wall as he sat himself down on your couch, and you came over with the lighter you were previously fiddling with to light the candles on the small cake.
All he could think about as you sang to him enthusiastically was how giddy he felt, and how lucky he was that he was spending his birthday in such a manner with you. And when he blew out his candles, the wish at the forefront of his mind was to spend many more birthdays with you in this manner
(and maybe a new car).
Even as you shooed him into the bathroom to change into more comfortable clothes as you cut yourselves slices to enjoy by the TV, and afterward retreated to bed, he muttered, “I’m still mad that you tricked me, by the way.” as the two of you closed your eyes.
Which earned him a swat to the chest.
SHOYO HINATA: JUNE 21ST
Shoyo absolutely cannot deny the fact that he’s had a great birthday since the moment the sun rose in the sky.
His special day began with an influx of texts and calls from family and friends to wish him a happy birthday, and use the opportunity to catch up with him. Nearly every moment of his morning was taken up by a different phone call that he took as he prepared himself for the training he had that day. When he arrived at the training center, his team immediately pounced on him, greeting him with enthusiastic cheers and a round of singing.
And while he can almost say his birthday was perfect, with all the texts and calls he received and the thoughtful birthday treatment, his one and only regret was the fact that you weren’t there to celebrate with him.
His birthday this year happened to coincide with travel for upcoming tournaments, which unfortunately meant that you wouldn’t be celebrating alongside him in person. But just because you weren’t there in the flesh to hug him tight and sing loudly in his ear, it didn’t prevent you in the slightest from doing whatever you could virtually to make him feel good on his special day.
At least, he had hoped it wouldn’t.
He had picked up your call eagerly on the day of his birthday, and grinned from ear to ear as you sang to him loudly and exaggeratedly. When you finished your song and exchanged all your morning pleasantries, to his absolute dejectment, you had informed Shoyo with a guilty tone that you would be unable to call or text for the majority of the day.
“I’m sorry, Sho, something suddenly came up for work, and I’m going to be swamped. I’ll call you tonight, I promise!”
The disappointment he felt was tremendous, yet he easily covered it up with an understanding nod and reassuring words that he’d stay up to catch your call. It wasn’t like he was really expecting your schedule to be free the entire day so he can call and text whenever. Besides, he was miles away from you; it would be selfish for him to expect that your schedule would be all free for him when his wasn’t.
So Shoyo made the most out of his birthday without you, and there wasn’t a moment where he wasn’t grinning. Enjoying delicious meals, being on the receiving end of all sorts of enthusiasm, excitement and birthday traditions from friends, family, colleagues and fans alike; each kind birthday gesture lifted his heart to Cloud 9.
The day concluded, after practice in the training facility when the sun began to die out in the sky, with Shoyo’s team insisting that they treat him to a celebratory dinner at some nice restaurant with some excellent international cuisine, allowing him to get a small taste of home. And Shoyo’s stomach was starting to churn, and it wasn’t like he was about to pass up a free meal…
The company took cramped spots in a booth inside the restaurant, bringing a few spare chairs to form a full circle around the large, polished wooden table jutting out from the wall. The setting sun meant that there was still some time before the restaurant could anticipate a more busy dining area.
Shoyo was spoiled with trays of meat, bowls of rice, and all sorts of other cuisine that he sampled from the plates of his colleagues. By the time the sun had nearly fully disappeared beneath the horizon, each one of their appetites was satiated, full and content with their meals.
As if Shoyo’s birthday couldn’t get any better so late into the day, it was about to become complete in the most unexpected and perfect way imaginable. Though the team was full, they could spare the appetite for a dessert, the most fitting conclusion for a birthday: because what’s a birthday without a cake?
Shoyo’s team accompanied him home with eager conversation, yet strange occasional whispers among themselves. Perhaps all the celebration was all a little too much?
When they arrived in a large group by his front door, Shoyo took notice of poorly hidden sly smiles and eager eyes from the teammates across from him, exchanging them among themselves as he fiddled with his keys.
He’s the first to step inside the dark room, calling out to nobody in particular an I’m home!, as was routine for him to do. His heart suddenly stops, however, when he hears a voice answer.
“Welcome back!”
His teammates burst out into chuckles and giggles. “Ah, it looks like our dessert is here!” One of them nodded his head toward the living room.
When Shoyo makes his way reluctantly further into his apartment, initially confused, his furrowed brows immediately relax when he turns on the overhead light, and he feels as though the breath had been stolen from his lungs and hitched in his throat.
At first, he thinks that perhaps he’s gotten a little homesick being without you, his special person, on his special day. He’d been thinking of you in intervals at every peak of his day. Surely now his exhaustion is crashing down on him, making him see things?
But your eager grin and short laughter as you took in his shocked expression tells him otherwise. You were here, in the flesh, standing right before him--
He all too suddenly finds himself squeezing you tight in his arms, and you immediately reciprocate with one hand coming around his neck, collective aww’s and teasing ew’s going round at the affectionate sight.
“Hold on there, Shoyo, the cake!”
He quickly steps away when he suddenly feels an object collide gently with his side, and he only partially lets you go as he steps back to look at a box you were holding in your other hand. You grinned at him.
“Surprise!”
He doesn’t dare let go of your hand even when you set the cake down and urge him to take a seat on his couch, taking an electronic candle you had bought on your way to his apartment and placing it at the very center. His entire team begins to sing to him once more as they crowd around him on the couch and around the table, this time with you joining in standing beside him, and his smile feels almost painful with the way it doesn’t falter for a second.
When the song ends, a round of cheers go around the table, and you remove the candle to place it in a napkin. You turn toward each other, and you place a hand on his shoulder as you lean down to give him a kiss on his temple and mumble a more quiet, personal happy birthday.
And just as he was about to lean over to capture your lips in an enthusiastic kiss, let thank you after thank you fall from his lips for such a grand surprise, all for him, you grabbed hold of his head, turned it back toward the cake, and shoved his face right into the center of it.
Gasps and cheers alike went around the table, and the rest of his team laughed at the bold and sudden gesture. He could hear your own soft laughter as his face gradually emerged from the cake, and the shrills and hollers from his teammates grew louder as they took in the sight of the icing and chunks of cake sticking to various sides. They continued to bark out laughter as he wiped the chunks away from his eyes, staring at them on his fingertips before turning toward you, hiding a smile behind your hand as you mouthed over it an I'm sorry.
Shoyo rose silently halfway from his seat, leaned over toward you, and before anyone could properly call on what he was about to do, smeared the cake on his hands onto your own face, and a new wave of audible surprise and amusement went around the table.
“Oh, so that’s how it’s gonna be, huh?”
“I hear you, Shoyo,” one of his teammates hovered over his seat as he took a large chunk of the cake with his bare hands, and immediately smeared it onto his colleague beside him. “You look better like this, anyway.”
The table erupted into chaos, with the remainder of the unassualted teammates running away from the assault.
“Quick, scatter, before they get us too!”
“Oh, you aren’t escaping that easily!”
Running, breathless laughter, and shrills of alarm rang out in a chaotic symphony throughout the apartment, but amidst the chaos, only you and Shoyo remained by the couch side by side, hunched over laughing at each other’s ruined faces. Despite the ruined cake, the madness in his home, and the icing running down your faces, Shoyo’s heart thrums with love and happiness, and he steps forward to cup your cool cheeks and halt your giggles by capturing your lips in a deep and (literally) sweet kiss.
Now, perhaps, Shoyo could say his birthday was perfect.

around mid to late 2021 i felt really down on myself because my drawing coherence deteriorated. my lines were shaky and jagged, my handwriting illegible. i felt ashamed, like i lost something important, and i worried if it would ever come back.
without really realizing that the reasons i was having a hard time drawing were:
Covid Happening
Going to art school in 2020 for a semester during Covid Soft Reopening and having no social contacts and taking 5 studio classes when you shouldn't take more than 3. while still having undiagnosed hypersomnia so i was sleeping through most of my free time. And most of the rest of it was spent jacking off to be quite frank
Spending spring 2021 semester in a two-house Covid Pod with like 9 people total and 2 dogs, one of whom was acquired early covid and had bitten the face of another one of my housemates in the fall. and i was dating one of my housemates. we were not dating by the end of the semester
My classmate/friend killing himself
My grandmother dying (like less than 2 weeks before i was gonna move out anyways)
Struggling to get a summer job and then cancelling it because I realized I was going to have a mental breakdown and spending the summer at home with my mom, where I had a different kind of mental breakdown
Realizing I had complex post-traumatic stress disorder
Realizing I wanted to write about evilsex while being in online spaces hostile to that
Starting to return to the idea that I was a system
Entering my senior year of college
I mean really when you put it that way, is it really any wonder i couldn't get my hands to move how i wanted them to. I think it's funny how I could recognize some of those factors but I still felt really down on myself. When you're deep In It you don't always realize the bigger picture.
Nowadays I can draw again. I will say that my output isn't really what it used to be, but a lot of that is the stress and responsibility of my independent life. Trying to trust that it will level out too.
i hope if anyone reading this is struggling with feeling like they've lost something valuable, that they will find the perspective to realize why they are where they're at and to trust that it will return
#indexed post#suicide mention /#Essentially just a summary of my trials and tribulations from that time

According to a new survey, lawmakers are playing an increasingly important role in holding corporations and governments accountable for failures to tackle the climate crisis.
The research was done by Columbia Law School, and was commissioned by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). It revealed that the number of climate-related court cases has more than doubled since 2017 and is steadily rising around the world.
Their report confirms a trend highlighted in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2023, which claimed that individuals and environmental organizations were, more and more, turning to the law, as it became clear that the pace of transition to net-zero emissions was too slow.
“Climate litigation is increasing and concerns about emissions under-reporting and greenwashing have triggered calls for new regulatory oversight for the transition to net zero,” the Forum report said.
The UNEP report catalogues a number of high-profile court cases which have succeeded in enforcing climate action. In 2017, when climate case numbers were last counted, 884 legal actions had been brought. Today the total stands at 2,180.
The majority of climate cases to this date (1,522) have been brought in the US, followed by Australia, the UK, and the EU. The report notes that the number of legal actions in developing countries is growing, now at 17% of the total.
Climate litigation is also giving a voice to vulnerable groups who are being hard hit by climate change. The report says that, globally, 34 cases have been brought by children and young people, including two by girls aged seven and nine in Pakistan and India.
Here are five of the climate breakthroughs achieved by legal action so far.
1. Torres Strait Islanders Vs Australia
In September 2022, indigenous people living on islands in the Torres Strait between northern Queensland and Papua New Guinea won a landmark ruling that their human rights were being violated by the failure of the Australian government to take effective climate action.
The UN Human Rights Committee ruling established the principle that a country could be in breach of international human rights law over climate inaction. They ruled that Australia's poor climate record was a violation of the islanders’ right to family life and culture.
2. The Paris Agreement is a human rights treaty
In July 2022, Brazil's supreme court ruled that the Paris climate agreement is legally a human rights treaty which, it said, meant that it automatically overruled any domestic laws which conflicted with the country’s climate obligations.
The ruling ordered the government to reopen its national climate mitigation fund, which had been established under the Paris Agreement.
3. Climate inaction is a breach of human rights
Upholding an earlier court ruling that greenhouse emissions must be cut by 25% by 2020, the Netherlands Supreme Court ruled that failure to curb emissions was a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The December 2019 ruling stated that, although it was up to politicians to decide how to make the emission cuts, failure to do so would be a breach of Articles 2 and 8 of the Convention which affirm the right to life and respect for private and family life.
4. Companies are bound by the Paris accord
Corporations, and not just governments, must abide by the emissions reductions agreed in the Paris climate treaty. This principle was established by a 2021 ruling in the Netherlands brought by environmentalists against energy group Royal Dutch Shell.
The court ordered Shell to cut its CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030 bringing them in line with Paris climate targets. The judge was reported as saying there was "worldwide agreement" that a 45% reduction was needed, adding: "This applies to the entire world, so also to Shell”.
5. Courts overturn state climate plans
Up until now, three European governments have been defeated in the courts over their climate plans.
In March 2021, Germany’s highest court struck down a climate law requiring 55% emissions by 2030 cuts, ruling it did not do enough to protect citizens’ rights to life and health. The same year, the French government was ordered to take “immediate and concrete action” to comply with its climate commitments. And in 2022, the UK’s climate strategy was ruled unlawful for failing to spell out how emissions cuts would be made.

Law & Order Special Victims Unit Season 23 Ep. 19 "Tangled Strands of Justice"
As a rookie, Garland worked on a missing person case and now he is asking Benson to reopen it. Additionally, a suspect in Carisi's case has been arrested.
If you want to watch the series for yourself, stop reading! This post contains spoilers to the storyline
In 2001, the police searched for a missing child in Central Park. A police officer told Garland that children of this age are rarely found. The investigation was interrupted by news of the September 11th attack. Twenty years later, remains were discovered in Central Park.
Meanwhile, a woman fled from a hotel room after stealing thousands of dollars worth of watches from a wealthy man. He met her on the Sugar Babies website. The cop who questioned him didn't approve. She used a fake name, and he claims he was helping her get over being sexually assaulted.
Garland is watching the news about the discovery of the remains of a child.
The victim is shocked to discover that his girlfriend stole his watches.
During their meeting, Garland informs Benson that he believes the remains belong to the little girl from the case he was investigating on 9-11. Later, in the squad room, he discloses to the other officers that he now works for the mayor's office.
The original investigator, who is now on oxygen, initially cannot recall the case. He explains that the case was deprioritized due to the events of 9-11. Despite being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016, he considers himself fortunate to still be alive. Upon hearing that the body may belong to a child, he crosses himself.
It is revealed that the thief was brutally assaulted by Henry, a psychopathic child from a previous episode (Season 22 Ep. 14), and is now stealing from wealthy individuals to support herself. Benson suggests that Libby requires an advocate.
Due to the body's decomposition, the ME cannot provide much information, but it is possible that the body has been in the water for 20 years. Additionally, fetal bones were found, indicating that the girl was pregnant.
Aretha's grandfather regrets letting her go get her scooter alone. The mother recognizes the watch as one she gave her daughter. DNA sampling is required to confirm the identity of the body as Aretha's. The mother believed Aretha had run away.
Libby is unsure how she entered the system and used different names with each man she dated. Benson realizes that the police used the rape kit to identify Libby.
She speaks with the detective to learn more about how the identification was made, but she refuses to disclose any information. Benson shares her concerns with Carisi, who agrees that it is unlikely the medical examiner's office would allow the rape kit to be used in this manner.
The remains are identified as belonging to Aretha. DNA was extracted from the fetal bones, revealing that the father was African American and the fetus was male. The police informed Aretha's family and Cora expressed her desire to retrieve her daughter's remains. However, when informed that Aretha was 5 months pregnant, Cora and her father were skeptical.
It is not standard procedure to upload a victim DNA to any databases. Benson interviewed some doctors and discovered that Major Crimes had made a request. The detective was informed of an assault victim in 2021. The doctor received the information from Major Cases. The supervisor and the DA's office will be launching an investigation.
Cora visits the police and expresses confusion. Aretha was a diligent student who focused on her studies. It is unclear how she became pregnant, as she always came straight home from school and only had boys over to study, with her grandfather present. Velasco interviewed the grandfather to gather more information. He admits to occasionally going for a walk, but only when Red accompanies him. Velasco is unaware of Red's identity. It is revealed that Red is Cora's secret boyfriend.
Cora insists that Red would never do anything to harm her baby. However, Garland believes that finding Aretha may be significant. Cora admits that she did not mention her boyfriend to the police because he was married. They worked together at the hospital. He later moved to Uniondale after Aretha disappeared.
Maxwell is disgusted, especially since three cases were based on stolen rape kit evidence. Szabo made all six requests to Kent. Benson believes that Libby was on a downward spiral since her rape. Carisi states that they possess additional evidence apart from the DNA. Benson is indifferent.
Rollins and Velasco interview Cora's boyfriend who expressed his desire to help but was still married. He mentions that he used to assist Areht with her science homework as she aspired to become a doctor. They request his DNA. He will take a DNA sample as lons as his wife and kids are not aware. He also contemplates Nina, Aretha's sister, whom no one knew about.
Benson informs Szabo that she violated NYPD protocols and Szabo comes to yell at her. Szabo reminds Benson that being raped does not give someone a free pass to commit crrimes. Benson claims that rape victims are reluctant to come forward. Szabo accuses Benson of bias. Benson dismisses Szabo.
Nina was traumatized by the murder and is now struggling with drug addiction. She was in a rehab facility but appears to have run away after Cora's father visited her.
Meanwhile, Libby refuses to follow in Henry's footsteps and manipulate the system to avoid consequences. Benson warns that this sets a dangerous precedent. A grand jury in Queens has indicted Libby, but she was released on her own recognizance after arraignment. Szabo advises Benson that the girl should have accepted a plea deal. Maxwell informs her that all of her arrests will be reviewed. Maxwell introduces Benson to a judge who will contact her later regarding this matter. Maxwell and Benson speak with a DA who is reluctant to drop the case because it would send a message. The DA suggests that they return to the OCEME.
Rollins and Velasco apprehend a drug dealer who claims that Nina did not have enough money to purchase drugs from him. The police catch up with Nina, who is attempting to engage in prostitution. Nina admits to knowing that Aretha was pregnant but never wanted her mother to find out, as her grandfather had warned her that it would kill her. It is later revealed that the grandfather is actually the one who impregnated Aretha, despite not being her biological grandfather.
Grandfather's girlfriend falsely claimed to be Cora's mother when she got pregnant. When Aretha told him she was pregnant, he didn't want her to tell Cora. He shook her, causing her to fall against the tub and hit her head. He never meant to kill her and loved her dearly as she was the light of his life. It was not a sin because she was not his biological grandchild. The grandfather has pleaded guilty.
Maxwell tells Garland that she misses him around here. Maxwell then informs Benson that the judge is requesting a bench trial for Libby. Additionally, the DA had forged his signature on some wiretaps. The DA announced in a press conference that they found a flaw and will drop the charges due to privacy concerns. Addtionally, she is urging other DAs to support new legislation.
Cora is fed up and never wants to hear her father's' name again. She has reunited with Nina and does not blame her for not disclosing the information.

Afghanistan: Paktia University graduates call on Taliban to reopen schools, universities for girls
Some of the family members of the graduate students who took part in the ceremony expressed hope that one day their daughters will get the graduation certificate along with the boys.
KABUL [Afghanistan]: Graduates of a medical school in Afghanistan’s Paktia University on their graduation day called on the Taliban to reopen schools and universities for girls immediately, Afghanistan-based TOLO News reported, adding that the graduates stressed that girls have the right to education and their time should not be wasted.
Ahmadullah, a graduate student, said there were girls with them during this period. He further said that girls have been banned from universities after the Taliban seized power in August 2021, according to the TOLO News report.
Mohammad Mustafa, a graduate student, said, “In a society, we need female and male doctors.”
Some of the family members of the graduate students who took part in the ceremony expressed hope that one day their daughters will get the graduation certificate along with the boys.
Dawood, a Paktia resident, said, “We all want schools and universities for girls to reopen. We also want girls to get their diplomas along with the boys.”
Baraktullah Takal, a Paktia resident, said, “We call on higher education authorities to allow girls to go to schools and universities because we need female doctors,” TOLO News reported.
Taliban-led deputy minister of Higher Education said they will act on the matter regarding girls’ education according to the decision of Taliban leadership.
Lutfullah Khairkhwa said, “It is clear to everyone that it is suspended until the second order, when we have the second order, schools will start on that date,” TOLO News reported.
The information shared by officials said that 146 people graduated from the medical school of Paktia University. However, there were no female graduates among them.
Meanwhile, the UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan, at the 53rd regular session of the Human Rights Council said in Afghanistan, women’s public presence has been totally erased by the ‘Taliban’, TOLO News reported.
Irene Khan in the report said that women’s rights groups play an important role in the struggle for gender equality and in promoting the agency of women.
“Women’s rights groups play an important role in the struggle for gender equality and in promoting the agency of women. They have come under pressure as civic space has shrunk in a number of countries, the most egregious example being Afghanistan, where women’s public presence has been totally erased by the Taliban,” the report read, as per TOLO News.
Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to UNOG, Suraya Azizi, said, “Since the unlawful takeover of Afghanistan, women and girls continue to remain at an ever-increasing risk of violence. Mr President, systematic discrimination against women and girls, a core element of the Taliban’s form of rule, has normalized gender-based violence. The restrictive environment they face outside the homes has multiplied instances of domestic violence.”
“Ignoring women’s ability to run the government and removing them from social, political, and civil positions will leave the nation with more economic and social problems and lead to personality stagnation in a generation,” said Nazela Hassanzada, a women’s rights activist, according to TOLO News.
Suhail Shaheen, the head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, challenged claims that women had been entirely exiled from the political and social sphere, saying some women were employed by institutions of the Afghan government and they would also be assigned to other institutions.

The Night She Disappeared | Lisa Jewell | Published 2021 | *SPOILERS*
2017: 19 year old Tallulah is going out on a date, leaving her baby with her mother, Kim.
Kim watches her daughter leave and, as late evening turns into night, which turns into early morning, she waits for her return. And waits.
The next monring, Kim phones Tallulah’s friends who tell her that Tallulah was last seen heading to a party at a house in the nearby woods called Dark Place.
She never returns.
2019: Sophie is walking in the woods near the boarding school where her boyfriend has just started work as a head-teacher when she sees a note fixed to a tree.
Dig Here.
A cold case, an abandoned mansion, family trauma and dark secrets lie at the heart of Lisa Jewell’s remarkable new novel.
Many perspectives bring us this thriller novel by Lisa Jewell.
The main characters we see are Tallulah, a 19-year-old mother to baby Noah, and her mother Kim. We also see Lula’s boyfriend and Noah’s father, Zach, along with Sophie and her boyfriend Shaun, the new head teacher at Maypole House, an exclusive boarding school. There is also Liam, who previously dated the mysterious Scarlet, along with Scarlet’s various friends.
At the beginning of the novel, Kim is home watching baby Noah while Lula and Zach are out having a date night. She is perfectly content watching her grandson, and playing the role of doting grandmother. But, when she awakes the next morning, neither Zach or Tallulah have returned home and she has not heard from either of them. This is out of character for the new, but doting parents, and Kim begins to get worried as the hours pass on. Zach’s mother isn’t any help, believing that they must have run off from the hardships of being young parents, but Kim doesn’t believe so.
She contacts the police, and an investigation is begun but within a few months, it grows cold. We fast forward a lot between 2017 to the following year. Sophie, a young novelist, has moved to the countryside with her boyfriend Shaun, who has become the new head teacher in order to help pay for his twins education that his ex-wife insists on them having. Sophie is getting used to this move, after having lived in London her entire life. When out exploring the garden outside of her home one day, she sees a sign that says “DIG HERE” with an arrow pointing to the dirt underneath. A few days later, the idea digging at her, she finally does what the sign suggests. What she finds actually reopens the missing persons case of Zach and Tallulah, having found an engagement ring that Zach had purchased a few months before his disappearance.
All within the current events, we go back and forth between the past, where we are given Tallulah’s description of what is going on. Lula and Zach had split up, but he was still a doting father and had every intention of getting back together with Lula, to create a proper family for their son. While Tallulah is okay with it at first, Zach quickly moves in with her and her mom, and begins taking up space that was once hers and she doesn’t like having to share it. After giving herself completely to her studies and to her son, she has little energy to give to Zach, and he picks up on it quickly. Their relationship, to others, seems perfect but really, Zach is controlling and doesn’t want Tallulah to do anything at all without him.
When Tallulah meets Scarlet Jacques at college, she is immediately taken by this strange girl. She appears on her doorstep one day, and begins their friendship, which quickly turns into more than that. Tallulah and Scarlett begin a heated love affair with each other, and Tallulah has every intention of telling Zach abotu it, but has never found the proper time. Until the night they go out and end up back at Scarlett’s house for a pool party.
The investigation is quickly reopened after the discovery of the ring, and a few days later, a strange object found in a similar manner. Nobody knows what it is, and can’t identify it. However, through flashbacks, we realize it is a key into a secret tunnel or room underneath a spiral staircase at Scarlett’s home. When Sophie notices it in a picture given to Liam, who she has been talking with quite a bit throughout the book to get an idea of what may have happened that night, she gives this new evidence to Kim, who sends it to the detective on her daughter’s case.
Sophie sits with Kim after they are given permission to search the property again, and they find the tunnel and inside human remains. The remains belong to Zach, and they also find Tallulah’s phone.
Through flashback, we figure out what happened: Tallulah and Zach are in a heated argument following the pool party, and when she attempts to leave, Zach won’t let her. She confesses that she and Scarlett have been in a relationship, and this sets Zach off. He threatens to have Noah taken away from her, and in an act of desperation, Scarlett hits him over the head with a statue and is killed instantly from the blunt force trauma. Scarlett’s mother, Joss, quickly comes up with a plan. She drugs Tallulah, and she is left inside the tunnel as well until the police investigation begins to taper off. The family and Tallulah set off, chartering a yacht with the story that they are running from an abusive husband and father. But, instead, they continue to drug Tallulah, keeping her on the boat.
It isn’t until they find Scarlett’s secret instagram account that they locate the boat and Tallulah is rescued. She has been addicted to the opiods she’s been given but she is sent back to the United Kingdom to be reunited with her mother and son. We also find out that the person who hid the key to the tunnel wasn’t the same person as the one who hid the ring. The key was hidden by Liam, who in an act of love and protection for Scarlett, killed the man who was essentially stalking and raped her. They hid his body in the tunnel as well, and Scarlett told him to go in and get rid of both of the bodies before they could be found. However, Liam only covers up the crime that he committed, and left Zach’s remains there to be found.
Discussion Questions
1. The novel is written primarily from Tallulah, Kim and Sophie’s points of view. Whose voice were you most captivated by? Did you prefer one narrator over another? Are there other characters whose points of view you would have liked to read? I preferred learning about Tallulah the most. She was such a strong girl. Having a baby at 19 years old cannot have been easy, but she was such a loving mother, and she was clearly loved by her son and mother. I also enjoyed the perspectives of Sophie, who was like a real life Agatha Christie in trying to solve the puzzle she had unknowingly uncovered.
2. With secret tunnels, a grand abandoned mansion and a mysterious boarding school, the Night She Disappeared plays with many of the conventions of Gothic novels, from classics like Jane Eyre and Rebecca to contemporary favorites like The Secret History. How does Lisa Jewell play with the genre’s tropes and make it her own? I don’t know much about Gothic novels, and if I read them, I couldn’t tell you if I did or not. I briefly remember reading Jane Eyre, but don’t remember much about the novel itself as it’s been several years.
3. After Sophie finds the engagement ring, the police search the woods again. Despite having gone missing over a year ago, Kim never believes that Tallulah has died and thinks to herself “Not once has Kim imagined that possibility to be anything other than a sliver of a bad dream that she could easily chase away with the power of her own thoughts”. How does Kim’s faith keep the investigation going? How does her deep understanding of her daughter lead her to the truth? Kim is a mother, and when something happens to your child, you just know. I fully believe this wholeheartedly, especially being a parent myself. Kim feels in tune with Tallulah, and believes that she would have known if her daughter had died. Kim, as a parent, never gave up faith that she’d one day find Tallulah, she kept up with the detective on the case even after the case had grown cold.
4. Scarlett’s paintings depict her wearing a crown and royal regalia and have violent imagery in the background. Liam tells Sophie that Scarlett never explained the meaning to him. How do you interpret her art? What do her paintings reveal about her character? This is a girl who clearly thinks of herself very highly. She was basically the queen of Maypole House, and she drew this as such in her painting. She essentially lived in a castle, as well, so it was very fitting on her to feel this way.
5. There are a variety of mother/daughter relationships on display, from the loving one between Kim and Tallulah to the downright twisted one of Joss and Scarlett to Kerryanne and Lexie’s more relaxed one. Despite all the very different women and relationships, are there any general themes related to mothers and daughters that Lisa Jewell seems keen to explore? It shows that there are different kinds of parents. Kim and Tallulah were close, essentially growing up together as Kim was also young when she had her children; she is only 40 when the events of the book take place. Joss and Scarlett have an odd relationship, likely because Scarlett spent a lot of her time away from her mother due to their riches: having spent time in boarding schools and not being around her mother. They don’t know what a mother-daughter relationship could really be like.
6. There is a clear class divide in the picture-perfect village of Upfield Common. As Sophie describes the students at Maypole, “It’s not just their youth that glitters...it’s their backgrounds, their innate privilege...They come from places that aren’t like the places most people come from and they have the high-gloss veneer of money that shines through the scruffiest of exteriors”. In what ways does class influence the plot and how various characters react to Tallulah’s disappearance? These kids probably never had to deal with anything like this before, and if they had, they were probably blissfully unaware of anything that was happening. Their privilege kept them sheltered in a way.
7. Lisa Jewell includes many heart-wrenching moments in which Kim grieves the loss of her daughter. What details did you find the most poignant? I think having to step into the role of mother to her grandson after Tallulah’s dispapearance is the most profound. Kim did what she had to do to take care of him in her daughter’s absence, which we find out was against her will and she was trying so hard to get back to them both.
8. Although at first Scarlett seems very charming, in many ways she is just as controlling as Zach. From luring Tallulah away at the school party to getting the TM tattoo to influencing Tallulah’s break up, Scarlett’s ultimate control over her is foreshadowed throughout the novel. Was there a specific turning point when you begin to worry about Scarlett’s hold over Tallulah? Tallulah was a narcissist and manipulator. She had Tallulah completely enamored from the beginning because she had her believing she was just like her, but was in fact, the complete opposite of her. She was a sociopath.
9. Zach and Scarlett are not the only two characters who confuse love and control. Who else struggles to find balance in their relationships? Which characters have a healthy understanding of what real love entails? None of them have a clear, healthy understanding. Sophie and Shaun maybe. They’re in a new relationship though, and Sophie isn’t sure she wants to be with Shaun in the long run, but she ultimately changed a lot for him. But, that’s part of love, having to make sacrifices. However, Tallulah and Scarlett were toxic for each other, mostly because they hid their relationship for so long. Scarlett and Liam were toxic because Scarlett could get him to do any and all of her bidding with just a simple ask.
10. Sophie, a cozy mystery writer, finds herself caught up in a plot straight out of her own novels. In what ways do Sophie’s sections feel similar to a traditional mystery, like an Agatha Christie novel? In what ways do they differ? I’ve never read any of Agatha Christie, nor do I know a whole lot about her, but I think Sophie’s persepctives were like any sort of mystery novel character. While she wasn’t looking to be involved, she suddenly became a part of the investigation and actually helped to solve it.
11. Part of what attracts Tallulah to Scarlett is the person she can pretend to be around her. After texting with Scarlett, Talllulah thinks to herself “Scarlett believes Tallulah to be your average 18-year-old girl, the type who can come and go at her own place, the king with no commitments. And now Tallulah thinks of this other version of herself, the one with no commitments....Suddenly, she wants this other Tallulah’s life more than anything in the world.” How and where does way does this desire for another life cause problems? Do any other characters have double selves? Tallulah couldn’t live another life, she was a mother. She had responsibilities that none of her counterparts had. She went to college, yes, but she also had a wonderful village of people behind her in order to accomplish this. But, a lot of the characters had double selves.
12. Liam’s secret remains hidden until the last pages of the book. Did you guess what he was hiding from everyone? I could not see that coming at all. That was probably the bigger twist than what happened to Tallulah.
13. Toward the end of the novel, Kim tells herself that despite Scarlett’s confession and possible imprisonment “Kim cannot feel sorry for her or care about her fate, as young as she is, as much as Scarlett may claim to love her daughter. She simply cannot”. After getting to know Scarlett over the course of the novel, do you feel sorry for her? Who do you think is more at fault, Scarlett or Joss Jacques? I do not feel sorry for Scarlett, as she was just as manipulative as her mother was. Scarlett was controlling overs, and Joss was controlling her. All of the Jacques were just terrible individuals.

hello! After reading some of the most popular larry fics this year for the first time, I decided to make a fic rec of my favourite fics. If you enjoy the fics, please leave kudos and comments for the writers! In no particular order, here's the 2021 end of year fic rec:
✨For As Long As I can remember (It's Been December) by green_feelings (@greenfeelings, E, 128K)
After recovering from a severe accident that causes Harry to lose his memory of three years, he moves to London to start his life over as a star chef. Little does he know that when he falls in love with Louis at first sight, it’s not the first time they meet.
This is one of my favourite fic of all time. It has A LOT of angst and it's simply perfect! It's really cheeky and I absolutely love how Harry is portrayed in it.
✨Unbelievers by isthatyoularry (@isthatyoularry, E, 136K)
The one where Louis and Harry definitely aren’t friends, and football is everything.
Honestly, everyone knows this fic, but I can say that it lives up to its expectations. I laugh, I cried, I was mad. Must read.
✨Walk That Mile by purpledaisy (E, 149K)
A Route 66 AU where falling in love was never part of the plan.
I loved everything about this fic. Strangers to lovers. This fic has also a lot of angst. The relationship development between H and L is smooth and one of my favourites so far.
✨Flightless Bird by audreyhheart (E, 97K)
AU where Louis Tomlinson is a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet. When his rival from ballet school, moody dance prodigy Harry Styles joins the company, old wounds are reopened and old passions reignited. During the company's production of Swan Lake the secret that doomed their love is finally revealed, but will it be too late?
With both H and L POV, we get a story that is sad but so beautiful at the same time. The plot is complex and the characters are well described. This fic is honestly so well written.
✨ 7 Up by cherrystreet (@cherrystreet, 51K)
Very loosely based on the British TV show "The Up Series" and somewhat inspired by the song “Something I Need” by Onerepublic, we follow the lives of Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson in an interview setting every seven years. They fall apart and come together, their lives and emotions recorded. Harry calls it a time capsule. Louis calls it a pain in the arse.
I don't usually like shorter fic, but this one is the exception, I was immediately drawn to it. I cried so much reading this, but the story was so good that I couldn't help but still smile all the way through the end.
✨Tired Tired Sea by MediaWhore (M, 113K)
As a B&B owner on the most remote of all the British Isles, Louis Tomlinson is used to spending the coldest half of the year in complete isolation, with his dog and the sea as sole companions. Until, one day, a mysterious stranger on a quest to rebuild himself rents a room for the winter.
This one is also a classic, and I was not let down. Another strangers-to-lovers story that left me in tears. The atmosphere created by the author is undeniably one of the best I've read so far.
✨Escapade by dolce_piccante (M, 146K)
In the grand scheme of things, finding a date for a wedding should be no problem for Louis Tomlinson. He's rich. He's handsome. He's reasonably well behaved. But when the wedding is for his lifelong best friend (and former boyfriend), and is happening in under a month, finding a date for the ceremony and accompanying festivities becomes more of an adventure than he ever could have planned for.
This fic is a breath of fresh air. It's light, it's funny, and it's everything you need to bring up your mood. The characters are so well portrayed and the setting is so dreamy. Must read.
✨Baby Heaven's in your Eyes by theboyfriendstagram (@theboyfriendstagram, E, 120K)
AU where Harry is the fucked up bad boy with too many problems, Louis is the perfect rich boy with too much money and their schools are right across from each other. They meet at a party and that’s the last (and maybe the only) thing they need.
This fic is everything you need it to be, it's funny, it's intriguing and it's cheeky. It's also quite graphic and that's part of its charm. I have never read a fic faster in my life.
✨Fading by tothemoonmydear (M, 202K)
Louis knows about beauty; the combination of qualities that pleases the aesthetic senses. He creates that combination every day in the garments he designs while studying fashion at uni. The cut of the design, the color of the fabric, the intricacy of the stitching; it all comes together to create something beautiful. When the science student with the long legs and dimpled smile agrees to model for him, Louis decides he’s found beauty personified. Harry just thinks Louis needs someone to show him how beautiful he is.
Ok so pls read the tags for this one. The story is so so so beautiful and so sad at the same time. Aside from the relationship between H and L, the liam-louis-zayn dynamic in this fic is simply perfect.
✨Young & Beautiful by Velvetoscar (M, 227K)
Louis, to his horror, attends an elitist university in which the name Zayn Malik means something, Niall Horan doesn't stop talking, there are pianos everywhere, and Harry Styles, only son of a drug-addled, clinically insane ex-rocker, has a perfect smile and empty eyes.
I couldn't have excluded this fic from my rec. Everything in this story is described so perfectly, from its characters to the atmosphere. I was literally carried into the story, and I didn't want to get out.
✨Victorian Boy by audreyhheart (E, 101K)
Victorian AU. Harry the virgin Duke of Somerset knows little of love, while Louis the sly Duke of Warwick knows too much. When the two dukes come together for the Bilsdale fox hunt in York, Harry finds himself drawn into Louis' bed. But when secrets from Louis' dark past come to light, Harry fears that the fox isn't the only one being hunted.
So this one is a little less known, and absolutely worth reading if you love historical AU. The author, once again, leaves me speechless in her descriptions and the way she portrays H and L.

Her heart takes her back to Florida and she, without much thinking, does so, but seeing that she is completely on her own, she falls in with a bad crowd and gets involved with a member of a criminal organization.
Spring 2003 - Summer 2015. Scarlett works as a thief, look-out, sometimes a spy. Escort, lounge singer, bartender. Whatever they need to be. The thrill she comes from it fills the void in her chest, not to mention it’s a great source of income.
+ you don’t have to put on the red light plot
Summer 2015. Nothing completely satisfies Scarlett, and she finds herself wanting more, now that she’s tasted it. A friend of a criminal friend introduces her to Edgar Edelweiss III, a wealthy entrepreneur based in Miami. The older man is mesmerized with her beauty and not a month later, the whole of high society is shocked when they announce their engagement.
Fall 2021. After barely 6 years of marriage, Edgar dies of a heart attack. Some (his family members, to be exact) are suspicious and everyone’s eyes turn to Scarlett, could it be his younger wife who happened to inherit everything had something to do with it him?
Summer 2022. Meanwhile, Scarlett isn’t concerned with the fact there’s an investigation is going on. The woman finally has it all– money and power, she would be happy. She moves back to her hometown, with old wounds and unprocessed grief seeming so far away, she opens a grand hotel and casino Edelweiss.
