(this can be answered publicly) Hey X, pardon me if you’ve answered this before, but I was just curious on how you ended up transitioning from academia to tech and what role you started with in tech? Also, so you have any advice for someone looking to break into tech from a non-STEM background? Thank you!
Hey! I haven't answered it publicly but it's a popular question, so I will now (warning, long answer is long).
So I was so fed up with academia for sundry reasons I won't get into here but I wanted a career that would allow me to A. retire some day (something that paid generally well), B. would allow me some measure of work/life balance without high stress, and C. Would ideally let me use my communication/writing/speaking/presenting skills in some way.
My parents and my partner all work in tech and were like, "did you know that we desperately need people with your skillsets in the tech world?" and my partner, who works in technical sales was like, "You would kill at my job, I am not lying." And I was like, every job listing in technical sales that I see requires either a degree I don't have or past experience I don't have, or both, and my mother was like "Do you know how many mediocre resumes from unqualified men come across my desk? Apply for the damn positions anyway." So I reworked my resume to focus on applicable skills/experiences and wrote a cover letter for each position I applied to saying "hey, I know I'm an odd candidate but let me tell you why that's a good thing." And I got a lot of positive responses!
I was interviewing at 2 different tech places when I accepted the offer for my job now. I had an initial screening call interview with HR, then a zoom interview with the hiring manager, and then I was given access to a limited demo environment and had a week to teach myself the software and put together a demo for a fake customer which I did for the hiring manager (my future boss), one of my current peers, and the VP of the org. I was offered the job the same night I did my fake demo. So in total it was a 2 week interview process, and I started working 2 weeks later. **
I'm a pre-sales solutions consultant, which basically means I'm paired with a sales guy who does all the money and business value talk with customers, while I get to learn about a customer's data problems and then demo for them how our products can address those problems.
The learning curve was (and still is) steep. But it was basically like going back to school, and I've always loved learning new things. The job is super fun. It fulfills all of my wants I listed above with the added bonus of being completely remote (aside from occasional travel to meet with customers for in-person demos). The people I work with are supportive, management is communicative and constantly giving me feedback/talking about my trajectory. I've won internal awards, already received two raises and one promotion and I haven't even been there a year. I'm making more than double what I did as a professor and the concept of retirement doesn't feel like a laughable pipe dream anymore. I miss teaching a lot, but I'm healthier, happier, and better prepared for the future now. And my work is genuinely fulfiling because I'm showing people how they can fix problems. Also, playing with data management software and putting together custom demos is neat. It's like all the best parts of a college project--research, making a preso, knocking everyone's socks off while giving the preso, but I'm getting paid for it. I'm glad I followed my mom's advice.
So I guess my advice is the same as hers: even if you're not "qualified," apply for the position anyway. Make custom cover letters for each position and if there's not a way to include the letter with the app, do some googling and find the hiring manager on LinkedIn and message/email them. The person who hired me said that my cover letter was what got me the initial interview. So that shit works. If you have friends or family working somewhere with open positions, use those connections. Having an internal referral will go a long way to getting your resume looked at. I know we're all like, boo nepo babies, but networking is a huge part of any industry. Use it to your advantage if you have the advantage (no, I'm not working for my parent's companies, but if there'd been an open position I was interested in, I would have applied for it. No shame).
**I also, on the side, applied for the Austin Fire Department because why not. After a whole lot of mental and physical prep, I was accepted to the academy (in the first class, no less, holla) right before I was offered my current job. But I had to be realistic and say that probably wasn't a good long-term career option for someone who is 110lbs and was barely meeting the physical testing requirements who also has issues with getting overwhelmed in high-input sensory situations. So. Into the tech world I went. This side note just to say, I was keeping my options very open and there's nothing wrong with that either, lol.
I hope this helps!

Untrue - Burial
[Garage/Dubstep] [2007]
Tumblr media
As was the case with early Dubstep, the sound of this album and the scene it came from is so distinctly working class, this pales in comparison to the scale and spectacle of post-Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites Dubstep.
My perspective on this album is from a 19 year old who's introduction to the genre came from Skrillex, Knife Party and Barely Alive in The Great Brostep Uprising of 2012. There is a massive divide between the old and new school sounds, discussions around which sometimes veer into snobbery.
This is not to put down modern Dubstep, every genre will inevitably evolve over time and this shift is directly responsible for the amplification of EDM for the casual music listener, whether you think that is good or bad, it was undeniably influential. Dubstep is far from commercial in recent years, the producers are creating simply out of love for the genre and scene which has led to innovative sound design and maddening rhythms. Some of my favourite modern artists are Sharks, Space Laces and Leotrix. There are plenty of artists today fitting the mould of old-school Dubstep and Garage: Eprom and G Jones for example, both of which take inspiration from D&B and Hardcore as well, even the new Skrillex record is a tasteful homage to the scene of UK bass music he was influenced by - we have come full circle.
The imagery and song titles on Untrue really speak for themselves - "In McDonalds", "Homeless", "Dog Shelter" and even the album cover signal to the listener a specific sense of normalcy and is based in the familiarities of the working man.
The intended listening environment for Untrue is for a slightly too long for comfort bus journey home in the dark, jacket hood up and headphones in, or waiting for your friend to meet you outside the corner shop, watching the raindrops be illuminated by the street lights.
The drums pattering away in "Ghost Hardware" are almost uncomfortably off-kilter, reminding me of "Gyroscope" off the album "Geogaddi" by Boards of Canada from one of the most terrifying albums I have listened to. Hypnotic vocal sampling of odd and very short sections remind me of XXYYXX's 2012 self titled debut of which Untrue was definitely an influence.
Upon researching this album, Burial said in in interview that he used the software Sound Forge to make the album. It is absolutely unreal to me that he managed to squeeze this work of art out of such a primitive and featureless software. Sound Forge is for audio editing, it doesn't feature any kind of sequencer or synthesizer. He produces sort of like an early Dub producer that used the analog mixing desk as an instrument. The fact that he had no grid to work with means the creation of this album was undoubtedly a painstaking process. But this means the drums have a unique swing to them. The reliance on waveforms over MIDI leads to some interesting sampling, pots and pans, rain ambience, vinyl noise, Metal Gear Solid soundtracks and SFX, synth demos and youtube covers.
Untrue is a prime example of how so much can be said with little words or even melodic content. The production itself sells the lonely, melancholic feeling. The emphasis on atmosphere and texture makes me wish for better intros and midsections in modern Dubstep.
All the "imperfections" of this album sell the experience, the click of the sub bass not stopping at the zero-crossing gives a similar effect as using vinyl noise. The title track "Untrue" is the highlight of this album for me, the powerful sub bass, the droning and creative sampling encompass everything I love about the album.
I remember reading a post on Twitter about trying to create an emotional mixdown and I didn't understand what they meant until I began listening to every choice this album makes, as an amateur music producer, I understand the perfectionist mentality so many producers have, endlessly obsessing over one thing that makes little difference until you zoom out to the big picture. My point being that EVERY production choice is intentional and essential to the emotion of the song which should not be understated in projects like these.

I just found a thing I did a few years back when I was an intern in IT. It was like this. I needed to finish an internship to finish school. I went to this one company and the manager asked, what do you want to do in IT. And I replied, I want to be a programmer! :) Because I did. But I knew shit about it. All I've ever done was some of the simplest javascript and php coding for school. And the dude was all, oh, that's cool, see, we need to make this app that'd create charts. Here's the software, here are the database credentials, find yourself some useful libraries, remember to check the licenses!! Have fun :D
And I was like. Oh. Okay. Do I tell him I've never touched java? Like never in my life? What the fuck is a maven? What. Thankfully I at least knew SQL well enough.
But I was way too nervous to say I'm seeing all this stuff for the first time in my entire life. And he told me already what I was supposed to be doing. So. After coming home. I was just reading all about it, how do you program in java, what's a constructor (lol), and I didn't really have time to go about it all properly, as in really get what I'm reading because the internship lasted a month you see, I had a month to write this application and write instructions about how it works and how to set it up so other people could make use of it later.
Tl;dr I still work for this company, and I am not a programmer, but today I was looking for some stuff and I found the instructions I've submitted. And. Wow. Since then I've started learning java properly. Now I'm on a course. So I read what I'd written, perfectly aware I'd done it without having the faintest idea what I'm talking about, AND IT'S ACTUALLY PRETTY OK? I bullshitted through it wonderfully. I used words I didn't know the proper meaning of in all the right ways, SOMEHOW. I showed how to set up a project in eclipse from the very start to finish, how to use maven dependencies, how to connect to the database, everything, to create a working application according to specifications I got. And all of that in a month. There's a whole code I've written and it's working properly. And sure, there was a lot of copy&paste and iirc the stuff I used had awesome extensive demos, example code included, but.
Now that I remembered all that I'm trying to make peace with the fact that instead of telling my boss, who really didn't care! and was cool!, that yeah, I would LIKE to be a programmer, but I'm not knowledgeable enough for this project, maybe I could help someone with server management instead? I shut up, never told anyone I had any problems or needed support, and with tears and sweat crammed enough into my head to do everything myself in a month. I. I was definitely in a special place then. And it was the moment I was pretty far on the road to recovery from the worst of my depression and anxiety, which only proves that I'd really been not fit to work when it was really bad, pfff. Like I've come so far since then, now that I get a ticket, look at it, decide it'd be way too much work for much too little gain and decidedly write back "no, we're not even trying this, sorry".

Long-distance USB 3.0 Solutions for Digital Signage Network
Tumblr media
Imagine setting up a high-resolution digital signage network across a sprawling facility or retail space, only to discover frustrating lags, poor image quality, or an outright failure to connect the hardware. These issues can derail customer engagement and cost you time and money. The culprit? Outdated connectivity solutions.
When it comes to modern digital signage, especially in environments where high-quality visuals are critical, traditional connections just don’t cut it. This is where USB 3.0 cameras step in as game-changers, offering the speed, efficiency, and long-distance capabilities you need to power your network seamlessly.
In this blog, we’ll explore how USB 3.0 technology can address the pain points of managing digital signage across large networks, and we’ll uncover practical solutions to help you succeed.
Understanding the Pain Points
1. Connectivity Over Long Distances In digital signage setups, screens are often spread across vast areas—think of large retail chains, airports, or corporate campuses. Standard USB solutions typically have a maximum cable length of 3-5 meters before experiencing signal degradation. This limitation can force you to use clunky extenders or repeaters, which introduce latency and make your setup more complex.
2. Quality Issues in High-Resolution Displays Today’s consumers expect crisp, high-definition visuals. Using low-bandwidth cameras or older USB connections can lead to pixelated or laggy video feeds, tarnishing the impact of your signage.
3. Increased Maintenance Costs Inconsistent connectivity leads to frequent troubleshooting and replacements, draining resources and increasing downtime. A robust, scalable solution is essential to avoid these headaches.
Why USB 3.0 Cameras Are the Ideal Solution
1. Superior Bandwidth for High-Quality Content USB 3.0 offers data transfer rates of up to 5 Gbps, which makes it perfect for handling high-definition video streams. With USB 3.0 cameras, your digital signage can display stunning visuals without buffering or lag, ensuring your audience gets an uninterrupted experience.
2. Extended Reach with Active Cables and Hubs USB 3.0 technology now supports active cables that extend the range up to 20 meters, while maintaining a stable connection. Adding powered hubs to the mix can extend this even further, providing a reliable way to connect cameras to displays over long distances.
3. Plug-and-Play Compatibility One of the best features of USB 3.0 cameras is their universal compatibility. They integrate seamlessly with a variety of digital signage software and systems, eliminating the need for complicated configurations.
4. Low Latency, Real-Time Performance Unlike traditional extenders, USB 3.0 minimizes latency, making it ideal for live-streaming or interactive signage. Whether you’re showcasing a product demo or delivering time-sensitive updates, this ensures your signage stays relevant and responsive.
Practical Applications of USB 3.0 Cameras in Digital Signage
Retail Stores Retailers use USB 3.0 cameras to power interactive displays that respond to customer gestures or voices, providing a personalized shopping experience. These cameras also support real-time analytics, tracking foot traffic and customer engagement to optimize campaigns.
Airports and Transportation Hubs In these environments, USB 3.0 cameras enable large-scale signage systems that display live flight updates, weather reports, and advertisements. The extended reach ensures connectivity across terminals without requiring complicated infrastructure.
Corporate Offices and Events USB 3.0 cameras can support seamless video conferencing on large screens, as well as interactive presentations during corporate events. They’re also used for surveillance and security, providing high-quality footage for monitoring purposes.
Educational Institutions Universities and schools leverage USB 3.0 cameras to create digital notice boards and virtual classrooms. The superior bandwidth ensures high-definition content delivery, even in large lecture halls or sprawling campuses.
How to Choose the Right USB 3.0 Solution
When selecting USB 3.0 cameras and accessories for your digital signage network, keep these tips in mind:
Check Resolution and Frame Rates Choose a camera capable of delivering the resolution and frame rate your signage needs. For interactive displays, opt for models with a minimum of 1080p resolution and 30 FPS.
Look for Extended Cable Options Ensure you invest in active USB 3.0 cables or powered hubs that can extend the range of your setup without compromising performance.
Verify Software Compatibility Select cameras compatible with your existing digital signage software to avoid integration issues.
Prioritize Durability Opt for industrial-grade USB 3.0 cameras if your network will be operating in harsh environments or require 24/7 performance.
Why Wait? Upgrade Your Network Today!
Your digital signage network deserves better than outdated connectivity solutions. By integrating USB 3.0 cameras, you can overcome distance limitations, deliver stunning visuals, and minimize maintenance headaches—all while staying within budget.
Ready to elevate your digital signage experience? Explore our range of cutting-edge USB 3.0 cameras designed for performance and reliability.

How to Choose the Best School Management Software for Your Institute
Tumblr media
Choosing the right school management software for your institute is a crucial decision that can significantly impact its efficiency and overall success. In today’s digital era, educational institutions of all sizes are turning to technological solutions to streamline their operations, manage data, and enhance the student-teacher experience. With a wide variety of school management software options available, it’s important to select the one that best fits your needs.
In this blog, we will explore the essential factors to consider when choosing school management software, helping you make an informed decision for your institution.
1. Assess Your Institute’s Specific Needs
Before diving into the sea of software options, take the time to assess your institute’s unique requirements. Every educational institution is different, and the management challenges faced by a large school with thousands of students will differ from those of a smaller institute. Make a list of the tasks you want to simplify, automate, or improve through school management software.
Some common needs might include:
Student enrollment and registration
Attendance tracking
Grade management
Parent-teacher communication
Financial management (fees, payments, etc.)
Timetable and scheduling
Library management
Understanding your needs will give you a clear idea of what features to prioritize when evaluating different software options.
2. Consider Ease of Use
One of the most important aspects of any school management system is its usability. The software should be user-friendly for all stakeholders — administrators, teachers, students, and parents. A complicated or confusing interface can lead to frustration and a lack of adoption.
When reviewing a software solution, look for one that has a clean interface, easy navigation, and clear instructions. Some vendors offer trial versions or demos, which can give you a hands-on feel for how intuitive the software is. Additionally, consider the level of technical proficiency among your staff and choose a system that aligns with their comfort level.
3. Check for Essential Features
Every good school management software should have core functionalities that make running an institution easier. While specific needs may vary, here are some essential features to look for:
Student Information System (SIS): This is the core of any school management software, helping you store and manage student records such as personal information, academic history, attendance, and performance.
Attendance Management: Efficient tracking of student and staff attendance with options for manual or automated inputs.
Fee Management: Automated fee collection, invoicing, and payment tracking can save a lot of administrative time.
Timetable Scheduling: The software should allow for flexible scheduling and timetable management for different grades, subjects, and teachers.
Communication Tools: Look for software that enables seamless communication between teachers, students, and parents via emails, SMS, or a dedicated app.
Exam and Grade Management: Efficient management of exam schedules, grading systems, and report card generation is a must.
Security Features: Data privacy and security are essential, so ensure the software adheres to high standards of cybersecurity.
The best school management software should offer a balance of these features, with the flexibility to meet the specific requirements of your institution.
4. Cloud vs. On-Premise: Make an Informed Choice
Another major decision you need to make is whether to go for cloud-based or on-premise software. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages:
Cloud-based solutions are hosted online, allowing users to access the system from anywhere with an internet connection. These solutions generally have lower upfront costs since you don’t need to invest in infrastructure, and updates and maintenance are handled by the vendor. However, ongoing subscription fees can add up over time.
On-premise solutions require you to install and manage the software on your own servers. While this option can give you more control over your data and infrastructure, it typically comes with higher upfront costs and the need for in-house IT support to manage updates and maintenance.
Your choice should depend on your institute’s budget, technical expertise, and security requirements.
5. Evaluate the Cost
Budget is always a factor when it comes to making large-scale software decisions. School management software can range from free or low-cost open-source solutions to premium platforms that charge per student or feature.
While it may be tempting to go for the cheapest option, remember that the long-term benefits of a robust school management system can outweigh the initial costs. Consider factors like scalability, support, and upgrades when evaluating the cost. Some systems might charge for additional features or users, so be sure to understand the full cost structure before committing.
6. Check for Integration Capabilities
It’s likely that your school already uses some digital tools or systems, such as accounting software, library systems, or learning management systems. The school management software you choose should be able to integrate seamlessly with these existing tools to avoid duplication of work and improve operational efficiency.
Make sure to inquire whether the software supports third-party integrations and if there are any restrictions or additional costs associated with it.
7. Support and Training
Good support can make or break your experience with school management software. Be sure to choose a vendor that offers comprehensive customer support, including phone, email, or live chat. Some vendors may also provide on-site training for staff to help ease the transition to the new system.
Ask about the level of support included in the package — is there 24/7 assistance, or are support services limited to certain hours? The more support options available, the easier it will be for your staff to get the help they need when encountering any issues.
8. Scalability for Future Growth
The software you choose should not only meet your current needs but also be capable of growing with your institution. Consider how your school might expand in the future in terms of student numbers, programs, or campuses, and choose a system that can scale accordingly.
Look for solutions that offer different tiers of service or the ability to add on features as your school grows. This will save you the hassle of switching systems later on.
9. Read Reviews and Ask for Recommendations
One of the best ways to gauge the effectiveness of school management software is by reading reviews from other educational institutions. Look for testimonials and case studies from schools similar to yours. You can also ask other school administrators or IT professionals in your network for their recommendations.
Additionally, many vendors offer case studies, demos, or customer success stories on their websites, which can provide valuable insights into how their software performs in real-world scenarios.
Streamline Your School’s Operations with NLET School Management Software

A Quick Look at the Kids App’s Features That Are Very Effective
The purpose of the greatest preschool and childcare apps is to help daycare centre managers manage several issues at once. The best apps manage a variety of issues, such as daycare sign in app, reservations, CCS submissions, online payments, online invoicing and billing, enrolment and waiting lists, and reporting.
The software utilised in OSHC management programs helps to manage several locations and facilities in addition to keeping an eye on sign-in and sign-out procedures. Operators at OSHC can undertake a lot of jobs that would have been very hard to execute otherwise. Parents may use the software to keep an eye on their kids' activities during and after-school care. Parents are able to keep an eye on their children's daily development and understand their learning portfolios, and teachers who are in charge of planning the kids' daily routines, are helped by maintaining mealtimes, diaper changes, and portfolio completion.
These apps increase productivity overall by giving the staff access to a wealth of information and features that simplify the management of child and family data. Child enrolment forms facilitate the development of comprehensive profiles for each child, ensuring prompt access to essential information. The initiative helps parents comply with the No Jab No Play legislation by encouraging them to provide recent Immunisation History Statements. Numerous daycare facilities operate multiple locations, necessitating the use of specialised software that makes managing the administrative responsibilities of various locations simple.
