re: last post
i can’t afford to look around for top surgeons since i’m at the whim of my insurance so odds are i will be going to schmidek for my top surgery
i’ll let people know how it goes because theres no way im the only person in WA who is in my situation
and if schmidek is a not-so-great option shes still AN option and probably my only chance at getting on with my life so i’ll take this

tomorrow.
#my surgery's tomorrow and i have confirmed it and i will check into the hospital at 8:15am tomorrow#then my surgery is at 9:45 and after that i'll be staying overnight in the hospital#and on saturday after i'm awake and feeling good my parents will come pick me up in seattle and bring me home#and ngl i am having a LOT of anxiety and doubts today#rationally i know this is what i want and that i'll be so much happier and i'll be able to go running again etc etc etc#but part of me is like 'derek ur making a mistake wtf'#like with starting t it was super gradual and if i wasn't happy a month or 2 in i could Just Stop and go more or less back to where i was#but with this i'm really scared i'm gonna wake up and be like 'oh god this is awful'#but for real i Know i won't feel that way#and to remind myself of that i wrote down a huge list of reasons i'm getting surgery and what i want to do post op#and i keep looking in the mirror shirtless today to remind myself that that's why i'm getting it done. bc i'm not happy w what i see.#but still. it's scary. and i've never had surgery before so anesthesia is also scary and i won't be able to have any visitors bc rona#i am glad my surgeon chooses to keep top surgery patients in the hospital overnight. makes me feel better#also btw i'm getting DI w dr alexandra schmidek at virginia mason in seattle#and herself and all her nurses and assistants are all so nice and i've seen pics of her results and i like them a lot#plus she's just in seattle which is only like a 40 min drive and at a reputable hospital and keeps patients overnight#and she's done this plenty of times. i know i'll ultimately be happy w my results even if i end up needing a revision#i've also been lurking on r/ftm and looking at posts from guys w similar anxieties who all say they're happy w their results:)#anyway. long tags ramble over. didn't have much of a point to this i just wanted to share what i'm going thru today#also if anyone has any questions feel free to ask#derek's ts adventure

I feel like this is a weird thing to say especially cuz it's not exactly horny, but as a fellow Trans™️ I love your nipples top surgery goals tbh
Thank you!!! I hope you can get surgery soon too :3 I’m very lucky! There’s only 1 surgeon in Seattle that does this and takes state insurance! Her name is Alexandra Schmidek with Virginia Mason if anyone is wondering.

I had my follow-up appointment with Dr. Alexandra Schmidek on April 16th, 2018. Both her and the nurse said everything looks great. The nurse removed a couple sutures that were poking out. That zit that I thought was a zit wasn’t really a zit and turned out to be a suture protruding. It kinda hurt but it wasn’t really bad. They told me I could use medical tape to help with flattening the scars, or I could silicone based medical tape which would help too. I don’t have any money until I start working again, so I will have to stick to using the medical tape until I can buy some of that. I’m also probably going to ask my primary doctor about some sort of acne cream or something since my chest gets bad and my back gets really broken out too. Friday the 20th will be 7 weeks post op. I’m clear to go about normal activities, but she said to wait until I’m at least 8 weeks to attempt upper body workouts. She also said if I need any revisions we can talk about it when I come back in 9-12 months. Like if my right nipple never pops back out she said she might be able to fix it. Who knows. I’m not really worried about it! I’m also going to try and spread the word more about Dr. Alexandra because she does great work and if you’re near Seattle under Medicaid (Apple) insurance it will cover the surgery.

hey there, idk how active you are on here but I'm a trans guy from Everett WA and I'm looking to get top surgery with Dr Schmidek, and I was wondering if I could ask you abt your experience with her? like were you put on a waiting list or anything before getting it scheduled? thanks x 😎
Howdy! Dr. Schmidek is amazing. Loved her and her staff. She was willing and able to answer all my questions... Even the stupid ones. Lol I wasn't put on a wait list... But did have to wait a month longer as I had to have thyroid surgery and recovery from that first. If I remember right I only waited a few months. I did document my Top Surgery journey on YouTube... Here's the link:
Feel free to ask any other questions you may have. I can't recommended Dr. Schmidek enough!!! Have a great day.

i saw a post floating around that basically says that dr. alexandra schmidek should be avoided at all costs for top surgery in seattle and i don't feel like arguing with people about it on the post but i will say (as someone who actually has surgery with her more recently than that post was made) she's pretty good. i know multiple other people who have gotten surgery with her in the past year or so and they all think she's good too.
yeah there's a lot of legal hoops to jump through. but i am also getting another gender affirming surgery done at another major hospital in the same area soon, and their hoops are exactly the same as virginia mason's. it's not weird for a major hospital to ask you to have your letters before your consultation. it's to get your insurance to pre approve surgery and any other appointments.
and i found dr. schmidek to be very good at answering my questions at my consultation and pre op appointment. sure she doesn't have the best "bedside manner" but i didn't want that anyway. i'm not saying op of that post is lying or wrong or anything but i'm just offering the perspective of someone who actually got surgery with her. and yeah seeing a high volume surgeon at a major hospital IS a pain in the ass but virginia mason isn't wildly worse than... any other hospital around here
#this is okay to reblog but if you argue with me i will block you#derek.txt#you'll find complaints like that for ANY doctor#when the only ppl posting about it are the ones who had a bad experience. even if the majority of their patients had a good experience

I had Top Surgery with Dr. Schmidek at Virginia Mason in Seattle, WA, she did a Bi-Lateral Mastectomy with Lipo and free nipple graphs. I had my consultation March 20th. I was called by Julie (scheduling nurse) on May 31st telling me I was approved for Top Surgery through my Insurance. I had surgery on July 18th! :) My insurance is Washington Apple Health, United Health Care. It paid for everything. I checked in at 10am and surgery was around noon. It lasted about 3 hours. I stayed over night in the hospital per Dr. orders (it's the way she does things). Dr. Schmidek and her team are Amazing! They used the correct pronouns and name the whole time. I felt very respected by Schmidek and her team. When it came time to looking at my "moobs" to see what surgery was necessary and to draw on them she apologized for having to make me a bit uncomfortable and did what she had to do as fast and as professional as she could. I will be recommending her to Anyone who asks. :) *I heal pretty fast and and I don't tend to scar bad. I am using Bio Oil and 100 spf Sun Screen on my scars. Here is a before and after college of my chest at 1 month Post TS: http://imgur.com/tuKFitk
