THE DIRTY (AND HAUNTED) TALES OF REBELLIOUS ROSE

O calendário daquele ano para o mês de outubro precisou ser refeito graças às mudanças bruscas dos planos do prefeito atual, Choi Beomseok. 

Mas a cidade não deixaria de incluir o Rebellious Rose em seus planos, numa conversa franca com o novo proprietário foi repassado que a festa temática teria que ser adiantada já que a prefeitura tinha novos planos. Em cima da hora? Talvez. Entretanto, a gerência do clube tratou de ajustar sua programação de forma rápida e até mais organizada que o prefeito.

Os trabalhadores do clube burlesco já até tinham um tema em mente para aquele tipo de evento, a animação era tamanha e como todos os eventos temáticos propostos pelo clube, tudo seria feito no maior sigilo até que fosse divulgado. Imagine seu conto de fadas preferido. Imaginou? Agora estrague ele da forma mais bizarra ou safada possível!

Dirty and Haunted Tales é pra ser uma noite cheia de magia, sedução, e, claro, uma gota de horror.

A decoração do clube variava entre os tons de vermelho e roxo, numa mistura do mais puro mistério e sensualidade que ambos os temas de Halloween e Burlesque proporcionavam juntos. Sem dúvidas, uma ótima combinação. Apesar da iluminação escassa carregando o peso de uma noite sombria, árvores secas percorriam desde a entrada até demais pontos de caminhos com diversas luzinhas piscantes. O ambiente ainda era preenchido por fumaça de gelo seco pelo piso, teias artificiais pelas paredes e até mesmo tecidos esfarrapados pendurados no teto, este também com pontos de luz. Um verdadeiro terror dos contos de fadas.

Os números clássicos foram modificados num pequeno teatro musical onde as melhores histórias eram estragadas por pequenos detalhes. Quer manter sua infância inocente? Não olhe para os dançarinos no palco! Certamente ficará traumatizado, ou seduzido aos encantos tenebrosos.

Me at work yesterday, noticing they didn’t play our communal workshift-Spotify-playlist again the whole day long, when I put like 60 k/c/j-pop songs in there (it has over 800 in total from others). But instead played someone elses spanish pop & raggae playlist, then Michael Jackson and hardcore techno schranz... 

Ya know I was even that considerate to not put Taemin & Kais “Pretty Boy” in it because it’s a bit loud and fast. But after the songs that got played yesterday I’ll put it + more SuperM songs in now I don’t care. If they can have spanish festival songs and Michael Jackson blaring through the halls, they can handle that too.

I even put a lot of songs that fit to our daily work there. Like “Line ‘Em Up” by SuperM? Perfect for when we work at the conveyor belt. But it’s fine... if they want to listen to their spanish playlist again and again...

It’s not like this communal playlist is out of order. It still gets songs from the admin. I asked someone about it. Apparently it’s not played that often because they are afraid it has too loud songs (aka metal) and the whiny fraction at work will constantly complain about it. lol... they created a monster :D.... 

The irony is that the whiny fraction is that part who forces the other ones to listen to spanish and german folk/schlager music or raggea, when we have lot of metal heads, rock and hiphop fans as well...

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (#230-221)

#230: Dschinghis Khan -- Dschinghis Khan (Germany 1979)

"Die Hufe ihrer Pferde, die peitschten im Sand Sie trugen Angst und Schrecken in jedes Land Und weder Blitz noch Donner hielt sie auf"

"The hoofs of their horses, they lashed in the sand They carried fear and horror in every country And neither flash nor thunder stopped them"

One of my favorite songs to jam to is Boney M's "Rasputin". A disco-influenced song about the life of "Russia's greatest love machine", it's energetic while telling that of a myth. I mention this because Dschinghis Khan is compared to this often, in all the ways.

Only this time, it's about the great conqueror Chinghis Khan, who took over the whole universe (and lasted for a very long time). From how he struck fear across the steppe to fathering seven children in one night, he is seen as the embodiment of masculinity.

While entertaining, sometimes I'm put off by the gimmickry. It can be argued that it wouldn't age that well today, because it can be seen as culturally appropriative or mocking Mongolian culture. But for what it's worth, it's enjoyable and still a classic today.

#229: Louisa Baïleche -- Monts et Merveilles (France 2003)

“Oh, mon amour Où es-tu, mon amour?” “Oh, my love Where are you, my love?”

A definite case of love at first listen for me—Monts et Merveilles is a calming ballad, albeit with sad lyrics about the end of a relationship. The instrumentation is quite nice; it reminds me of songs that stood out on the charts during that time. It also had the "ethnic style" percussion in the bridge, which made me think that France Televisions wanted to mix what worked in the last two years (ballads) with the ethnic sounds from the 1990s (as Louisa is half Kablye, an Algerian ethnic group)

Despite it, it got a pretty low result—though it may be because 2003 was a stronger year songwise compared to the two years that came before it. Or it maybe because of the hair getting into her face that took away from the experience...

#228: Hakol Over Habibi -- Halayla (Israel 1981)

"הלילה, הלילה, יהיה זה הלילה נאמר דברים שלא אמרנו מעולם"

"Tonight, tonight, it will be the night We’ll say things we’ve never said before"

On a random note, whenever I would search up Idan Raichel's "Hakol Over", Hakol Over Habibi would be one of the first search items that pop up. I would completely ignore it until now, when they actually participated in Eurovision!

That said, Halayla is very groovy song which plays with the disco vibe of the 1970s and the highly energetic choreography that would define 1980s Israeli Eurovision entries. The instrumentation is quite awesome, with the mix of piano, strings, and I think accordion setting up the vibe. (And it switches well from minor to major and back again , which can go awry when done wrong).

The members seem to have a ball on stage, and Kikki looks beautiful in her dress, which was fitted that way because she was pregnant at the time!

#227: Wind -- Laß die Sonne in dein Herz (Germany 1987)

"Manchmal bist du traurig und weißt nicht warum Tausend kleine Kleinigkeiten machen dich ganz stumm Du hast fast vergessen wie das ist, ein Mensch zu sein Doch du bist nicht allein"

"Sometimes you feel sad and you don’t know why Thousands of little reasons are making you dumb You nearly forgot what it’s like to be a human being But you are not alone"

Wind has the interesting distinction of participating three times and coming in second twice out of those three. The first one, "Fur Alle" was seen as such as a big contender that there were bets made against it winning. And then it didn't.

Laß die Sonne in dein Herz didn't come that close to winning in 1987, but I can argue it's the better song of the the three.

It catches you right away with the reggae influences, which creates a relaxed vibe throughout the song. It builds up well with every key change--it does get repetitive at times (especially with the choruses), but never boring. And while it shares a similar theme to Fur Alle, it doesn't come off as either derivative or charitys-single like.

(That said, I did grow to like Fur Alle eventually, but this one was more instantaneous.)

#226: Charlotte Perrelli -- Hero (Sweden 2008)

“This is a story of love and compassion Only heroes can tell.”

The better Charlotte song, in my opinion. The song she won with, “Take Me to Your Heaven” is a complete vintage track, almost influenced by ABBA-nostalgia going on at the time. “Hero” , while still on the same schlager vein, modernizes the production a little bit, to the point I imagine it would be a good pop song of that era.

Alongside that, Hero has some compelling lyrics, one which could summarize the hero's journey in general. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody were to write a Eurovision jukebox musical, they would use this in some format.

That may be the case on why l like it better, but it could also be because it should’ve done better in the contest. The fact the jury wildcard saved Charlotte is a reason why they're around, but the fact there was a wildcard which kicked out the actual tenth placer (North Macedonia's Let Me Love You) could be totally flawed too.

#225: Carlos Paião -- Playback (Portugal 1981)

“Podes não saber cantar nem sequer assobiar, Com certeza que não vais desafinar, Em play-back, em play-back, em play-back,”

“Maybe you don't know how to sing or even how to whistle But you won't sing out of tune for sure, In playback, in playback, in playback”

This is so modern and infectious it’s unbelievable. From the introduction to Carlos’ biting lyrics to the choreography, it makes one wonder why it got neglected in the voting. 1981 was a strong year, sure, but this song is definitely one of the best of that field.

Playback, as the title suggests, is about the pervasiveness of lip-synching in the music industry. One day, nobody will have to learn how to sing because the playback will save them. They can all focus on the performance without taking note of the song.

It's eerily relevant to Eurovision today, considering we don't use live music anymore and backing vocals can be mimed. I have mixed feelings about the latter, because one side argues it allows different genres of music to appear, but the other argues it reduces artistic credibility. I prefer having live vocals; if a delegation wants to use them on the track (e.g. looping), it should be on a case-by-case basis.

Maybe that's why it somehow made the ESC250 the last two years...

#224: Emma -- La mia città (Italy 2014)

“E dimmi se c’è davvero una meta O dovrò correre per la felicità”

“And tell me if there really is a destination Or I have to run for happiness”

The black sheep of Italy’s post-comeback output, and coincidentally the only song completely chosen internally. That being said, La mia citta is still a good song, and for me it’s better than some of the fan-favorites out there.

Admittedly, I prefer the punchy verses to the chorus, with the latter reminding me of something out of P!nk's discography, but I revel on Emma’s energy and her letter to the city of Rome. We have struggles about the place we are from, but still try to sing its praises when we can!

The staging was a bit tacky at times, but I did like the aesthetics of it—particularly her laurel wreath. Her costume had a good concept also, but is also overdone it in terms of the bejeweled top.

(As for the Sanremo winner that year, Contravento, it feels like a bit of a grower. The clarinet intro really takes one in, but there has to be a whimsical, sweet staging to accompany the hopeful song. Had they done so, a left-side finish would've waited for them)

#223: Brigitta -- Open Your Heart (Iceland 2003)

“Everything you share with me Turns a little darkness into light And that is how we’re meant to be Truth will keep the light shining brighter”

Also known as, the woman who originally came from Husavik! The difference is that Birgitta was the lead singer of the group Irafar. Open Your Heart reminds me of songs that end up on DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) soundtracks—it can actually work in the end, but also in the beginning to introduce the characters and/or their circumstances. The random running order really helped it with being first, haha! Beyond that, it's an optimistic song, helped with the guitar influences which ground it in the era. Plus, the production and lyrics add to this feel, encouraging even the shiest to open up their feelings. Also, I like the flowery aesthetic that Birgitta has, from one in her hair to the larger one (which I think is real?) on her microphone. Personal ranking: 4th/26 Actual ranking: 8th/26 in Riga

#222: Tomas Ledlin -- Just nu! (Sweden 1980)

“Han vill dra iväg, kanske ner till Paris Och hitta äventyret på något vis Inte sitta här på stans konditori Och låta tankarna, bara fladdra förbi” “He wants to go away, perhaps down to Paris And find adventure somehow And not just sitting here at the local café Just letting the thoughts flutter by” The 1980s saw the genre New Wave come to vogue, and Just Nu was a valiant attempt on the genre, especially considering the direction Eurovision would go later. From the opening notes, I got the punkish notes from the instrumentation, and the lyrics definitely add to the feeling of being free from societal expectations, crying out "right now"! (which is funny, because I learned Romanian at one point and nu means no in the language. So I keep thinking it's "just no!" against conformity) Tomas also shows quite the attitude on stage--he just struts into the stage with a boyish charm and kickstarts the song. With his looks and usage of the microphone stand, he portrays this rebellious character well, though the orchestration could’ve been improved with the strings and flute. Personal ranking: 2nd/19 Actual ranking: 10th/19 in Den Haag

#221: Lea Sirk -- Hvala, ne! (Slovenia 2018)

“Moje ime je Lea in/Za vas imam nov lik!” “My name is Lea/ And I have a new character for you!”

I love the opening lines for this song—it immediately sets the tone and has a strong statement alongside it. She's Lea, and she won't let anything down on She asserts that she can’t be sold out, and has a great attitude to accompany the trap beat, which reminds me of a K-pop song for some reason. The staging fits the song to a T--though it didn't need any changes from the NF, haha. As for the fake break, I don't have any strong opinions on it, but it definitely kept up interest for the song. A nicer touch was the Portuguese line in the end. Either way, it was a surprise qualifier in its semi that year, and it was one surprise that I greatly welcomed. Hvala da!

Salt Cover em fatos e números (vix, danou, sou de Humanas!)

- QUACK! Ei, eu disse fatos, não patos! - A Salt Cover foi a única emissora a ir ao ar adaptando máquinas fotográficas lambe-lambe, porquê ainda não haviam câmeras de vídeo e as de cinema eram caras demais. Da mesma forma, os microfones eram 3G (de três grafites, que o pessoal aprendeu nesse vídeo aqui :P). Se duvida, pergunte a um dos nossos primeiros cameramâns, Ramón Madruga!

- A primeira torre da Salt Cover era a mesma da rádio, com a estonteante altura de 2m38, transmitindo a nossa programação para um raio de até 34 metros.

- Em 1948 lançamos o Jornal Jassional, o primeiro telejornal transmitido direto de um salão de cabeleireiros, o famoso salão do Jaça, recomendado por Sylve Sants (o Bolívia que Faz). O telejornal tem uma carreira mais vitoriosa que a de Mohammed Ali, tendo saído do ar apenas em 1949, 1972, 1977, 1981, 1984, 1989, 2003, 2005 e 2011 por falta de audiência e sendo substituído pela série Keys.

- Nas primeiras edições do JJ, era nítido o desconforto dos apresentadores (Sid Morera e Sheraton Games) em olhar para as câmeras, até então eles faziam algo semelhante na Rádio Salt Cover AM 14hz (a frequência era muito baixa, de tão antiga que era a rádio) e só se preocupavam com o som.

- A primeira Unidade Móvel da Salt Cover foi montada em 1949, em uma cristaleira, mas os engenheiros reclamavam da falta de espaço para os talheres.

- A Salt Cover foi a primeira em fazer testes top sícrete de alta definição, em 1980, com duas câmeras da Hfllöwskiyi, fabricante húngaro, de 8 tubos de plutônio Pluticon, com excríveis 490 linhas horizontais. Ninguém viu, apenas 139.988 pessoas que por acaso estavam no Viaduto do Xá Reza Pahlevi, em São Paulo. "O importante, no caso da alta definição, é que ninguém veja. É mui' difíss'...", dizia o coordenador de engenharia da Salt Cover na época, Gerald Magella.

- Por dia, mais de 90 milhões de pessoas assistem a Salt Cover, sobretudo se a gente levar 8 telões de LED na BR-116, puxado por um exército de garotas de biq... digo, monoquíni, e ao som de schlager (aquelas músicas que tocam na Octoberfést). Na verdade, segundo o DataFalha, o número chega a quase SEM milhões :P

- A primeira transmissão em cores da Salt Cover foi... a Festa da Uva em Caxias do Sul, certo? Errated! Essa foi a primeira do governo, mas já em 1955 a Cover transmitia a Festa da UV-A no Rio Grande do Norte! O motivo era simples: apenas os 300.000 lumens da luz solar naquele rincão do país, às 11 da manhã, conseguiriam arrancar imagens razoáveis dos tubos então ceguetas das câmeras TK-82C da RSA. Roberto Marítimo, muitas vezes até hoje, presta 1 minuto de silêncio em homenagem às vítimas daquele desfile, que também causou prejuízos materiais, como o derretimento dos postes de iluminação e do asfalto :{ Ao menos as imagens ficaram legais, parecem aquelas câmeras VHS.

Elina Nechayeva - “La Forza” 8th place

You thought this ranking was dead, didn’t you?

As fate would have it, I’ve finally found time to publish new content for you to enjoy, riding the wave of a unexpectedly great edition of JESC, in which Australia’s generic jury evil was once again vanquished by a plucky east-bloc diva. It is ~LA FORZA DEL DESTINO~, y’all.

But before I elaborate on the JESC thoughts that I O U, I will first finish my ranking of ESC Proper.

Let’s be honest, chickens, I was never *not* gonna like a regal Rustonian swan especially one who saunters around in oversized projector dresses and displays the exact same behaviour and personality as Cosi Fan Tutte’s Dorabella 24/sevs (seriously. Elina is *possibly* the only Estonian to have an openly ditzy personality <3), like HELLLOW!  How can I not love her? Look at the state of her:

Gorgeous! She should HAVE WON but alas she was rigged out by a bitter jury and awful taste, what else is new? Now, I’ve heard people (jealous eleni stans) tell that “La Forza” is overrated because it’s “not that special, especially for it’s genre” which... I don’t quite understand? (Especially coming from Eleni fans. ELENI!!) Sorry to tell ya boos, even after all these months, I still think “LaForza” slaps the crap out of the “Fuego’s” and “Toy’s” of this world and here’s why.  

For starters  “La Forza” is only the second *actual* Opera entry in Eurovision canon, after “Sognu”. Note that I am *not* counting all the schlager/opera dalliances the likes of “My Friend”; “La Voix” and “Cvet z Juga” which are just typical Eurodance songs disguised *as* Opera songs.I don’t dislike them (quite the opposite), but they’re *not* of the Opera genre, while “La Forza” indisputably is.

 More importantly however is that “LaForza” manages to both

*Excite visually* 

I’m happy those crowdfunding campaigns payed off for Estonia, if only for the opportunity to turn Elina into a cobweb, an amoeba that farts rose petals and a jacuzzi respectively. Not to mention that Elina herself is gorgeous. 

*Soothe musically* 

Elina’s siren voice is the perfect balm after a full three hours of chicken noises, fuckboi metaphors and air piano’s. #TheVoice is usually something I don’t care about *too much*, but in Elina’s case it manages to calm me down every time I decide to give her song a whirl and that keeps it fresh and fun for me, even after all these months. 

Incidentally, spectacle and belcanto the two reasons to watch opera performances in the first place. I mean, what is opera but a musical in which portly people in lederhosen and capes stab one another with prop swords and mime dying by shrieking at (and over) each other in high-pitched mangled Italian for 15 minutes? La Forza delivered both with flying colours. It’s PERFECT.

Yet perhaps... a bit too perfect?

You know, I hate to admit it, but I initially had Elina *even* higher than third. In fact, when I first compiled this list, she was my #1. Yet, as time went on, I felt like something didn’t fit. I love Elina and I love Estonia in Eurovision (and life.) and I felt they had *EARNED* their first ever #1 spot on a BorisBubbles ESC ranking, after finishing in my top five a bajillion amount of times. Yet... I couldn’t commit. You see, imperfect entries and underdogs have always been my jam *way more* than bouts of seemingly flawless beauty and one must stay true to their character! Now let’s celebrate Estonia Being Great Again and look forward to the impending Tanja/Birgit Co-Op that will take us BY (shit)STORM!! IT’S DESTINY Y’AAAAAA Y’AAAAA Y’AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL *whirls out*

Ở thời điểm hiện tại nếu phải so sánh về sức mạnh thì có vẻ Scotland đang yếu thế hơn đội tuyển Áo một chút khi đội bóng này đang thi đấu vô cùng thuyết phục.

Nếu ở nền bóng đá châu Âu, Scotland là đội bóng không được đánh giá quá cao nhưng việc họ được rơi vào bảng đấu tương đối dễ thở như bảng F thì đội bóng này vẫn còn cơ hội để có thể giành vé đi tiếp vào vòng chung kết World Cup 2022. Đến hiện tại thì tình hình của Scotland vẫn khá khả quan khi họ có được 2 trận hòa và 1 chiến thắng trong 3 trận đấu gần đây mà đội bóng này đã tham gia. Có được 5 điểm và đang đứng hạng nhì trên bảng xếp hạng, nếu có gắng thì Scotland vẫn có thể làm nên chuyện.

Còn về phía đội tuyển Áo, rõ ràng đây là đội bóng được đánh giá cao hơn đối thủ Scotland nhưng thực sự thì họ đang có phong độ thi đấu khá phập phù. Chỉ có thể chiến thắng được 1 trận đấu, 1 trận hòa và để thua 1 trận trong 3 trận đấu vòng bảng vừa qua, Áo rơi xuống vị trí thứ 4 trên bảng xếp hạng, đồng điểm với đội bóng xếp thứ 3 Israel nhưng chịu thua về mặt hiệu số.

Kết quả ở vòng loại World Cup lần này quả thực không đúng với mong đợi của đội tuyển Áo cho lắm khi mà họ đã có sự chuẩn bị rất kỹ lưỡng cho chiến dịch lần này.
