#schizophrenic error sans

Note
hello! um- for the Disabled AU. i once spent like a whole hour analyzing Error and researching shizophrenia and he could be diagnosed with it in canon! not gonna make the whole list of symptoms, but the voices, social isolation, POSSIBLE persecutory delusion (when he accuse Blue of trying to find his weakness, if i remember right), paranoia..
you dont have to answer!! just some food for thought if you want it-
Hi !
That's actually quite fitting ! I haven't thought about Error but now that you mention it I can definitely see him being schizophrenic too, there is also a nice comparison to make because he would be so different from Dust even though they have the same mental illness
For exemple while Dust despises his voices and hallucinations and tries to escape them by staying with the others and constantly asking them if they can see/hear what he sees/hears, Error just accepts his hallucinations
He has been alone for so long with his only company being the voices he hears all the time, he became familiar with them, he doesn't fear them, he answers them not caring if they actually are real or not because he just doesn't care like Dust cares
They are two very different interpretation of the same illness and I think it could be very interesting to compare them !
Thanks for the idea ♡

Prophet WIP
Hundreds of years after the six gods' potential death, a single prophet is born. When his twin brother is possessed by a holy sickness, a race begins to preserve or destroy the last relics of dead divinity, and refuse or give forgiveness for errors of the past.
Starring!
Theodore Novak (Theo): the prophet. Desperately does not want to be a prophet. A nervous wreck most of the time, becomes a little strange when he grows comfortable around you. Has not seen his brother for almost a year, and eager to apologise for previous cruelties.
Cain Kavon: The brother, and vessel to the Blight. Controlled by his anger, and by having his mind changed around him. Schizophrenic, and suffered from his brother unknowingly encouraging a delusion to dangerous levels in the past. Prideful and headstrong and terrified thrilled to now belong to the Blight.
The Blight: The divine sickness. Sourced from human anger and frustration at the gods. Recently escaped the trap the final god put it in, weakened and needing something to reside in as it gains power again. Exploits others anger and frustration to get what it wants.
Raya Glick: The student. Provided a place for Theo to go to when he was asked to leave home, and uses him as an assistant to her history PhD on exactly what happened to the gods. From an orthodox temple background. Drives around the country in a van, investigating the gods current forms. Straightforward and non-nonsense.
Featuring the complexities of brotherhood, the thin line between “prophet” and “schizophrenic”, a divine and glorious anger and a desperate attempt to reach someone who may already be lost to you.

i researched schizophrenia just to diagnose fictional characters
quick note: i’ve tried to do research on schizophrenia, but if anything is inaccurate/offensive/insensitive/just plain wrong, please let me know! i’m not trying to offend anybody with these, i just noticed a lot of people headcanoning Error and Dust as schizophrenic and i looked up symptoms to see whether or not it could be plausible.
specifcially Error because he’s my favorite. (all information on him comes from ‘Ask Error!Sans, the MOVIE’ on youtube.)
so i have google open, behavioral symptoms include: “social isolation, disorganized behavior, aggression, agitation, compulsive behavior, excitability, hostility, repetitive movements, self-harm, or lack of restraint.”
Error lives in the Anti-Void, which seems like isolation to me. his only friends are the voices in his head, puppets, and later on, a kidnapped Swap Sans. so… check? at least, i really don’t think he has any living friends.
CQ said that Error was made to be hypocritical and confusing, which could fit in with disorganized behavior. he contradicts himself, he never provides a straight answer when asked why he destroys AUs, etc. not a lot, but i think that still might fit.
I think that we can absolutely call Error aggressive, agitated, and hostile. he destroys entire worlds, he plays with the souls of other living beings, and the second Blue says that his weakness is friendship in the comic, he gets defensive, maybe a little paranoid if I remember right?, and abandons him in the Anti-Void.
Error does whatever he wants, so that could easily fit with ‘compulsive behavior’ and ‘lack of restraint’. maybe?
i can’t say anything for repetitive movements or self harm, though.
Cognitive: “thought disorder, delusion, amnesia, belief that an ordinary event has special and personal meaning, belief that thoughts aren't one's own, disorientation, mental confusion, slowness in activity, or false belief of superiority.”
okay, well, we can’t read minds, however, amnesia is pretty obvious for Error. he doesn’t remember who he is, he forgot that Toriel was a ghost, his memory is generally pretty bad.
Delusions, I don’t know. Schizophrenia is mostly defined by hallucinations and delusions, but i’m not sure what to think.. “belief that an ordinary event is special,” “belief that thoughts aren’t one’s own,” “disorientation,” “mental confusion,” “slowness in activity”. i don’t think we’ve seen any of that in Error.
however, “false belief of superiority” seems pretty obvious. he acts like he’s the righteous one, saying that “SOMEONE needs to destroy the AUs,” like it can be justified. he calls himself cute, pretty, the best, Abomination #1, and just refers to everyone else as mistakes, abominations, anomalies, and says that Ghost!Toriel shouldn’t exist.
Mood: “anger, anxiety, apathy, feeling detached from self, general discontent, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, elevated mood, or inappropriate emotional response”.
i’m pretty sure we’re lacking in these areas. Anger, yeah, Error gets pissed off easily, and he definitely seems paranoid and suspicious. but everything else, aside from ‘elevated mood’, I really don’t think he has the symptoms.
Psychological: “hallucination, paranoia, hearing voices, depression, fear, persecutory delusion, or religious delusion”
Error mentions in an earlier post that he’s been hearing voices for years, so ‘hallucinations’ and ‘hearing voices’ are checked. there’s a moment where he realizes that a handshake with an asker became handholding, and thinks that he’s being taken advantage of. that, along with his getting angry when Blue says that his weakness is ‘friendship’ and accuses him of being a liar, makes ‘paranoia’, and possibly ‘fear’, seem like another box to check off. i don’t know about the others.
Speech: “circumstantial speech, incoherent speech, rapid and frenzied speaking, or speech disorder”.
I don’t think this is much, but technically, Error could have a stutter? Repititions, prolongations, and blocks are often seen when people voice-act Error, so… maybe? his glitches can definitely make him hard to understand at times, so again, maybe??
Also common: fatigue, impaired motor coordination, lack of emotional response, or memory loss
i’m not sure about a lot of these. maybe,if you squint, you could take the line “when i first got here, all i did was sleep” and fit it in with fatigue, but i’m not sure. impaired motor coordination, i’m not sure either. in my own personal AU, he does have a bit of trouble w/ precise movement because of his glitches, so he ends up clipping through a lot of things, but in canon, i don’t think he has any problems. lack of emotional response doesn’t fit either, since he seems pretty expressive. but memory loss is a given, this bitch remembers nothing.
sooo yeah! that’s all i could find, draw your own conclusions with this-

Swap Underverse Asylum Sans
Alright, I know I'm not on here often, but hear me out.
In the swapped universe where Dream ate the apple, Ink now has Error's job, and Nightmare is trying to stop all of this with the help of a maker Error Sans, I haven't seen much in ways of the other bad guy sans getting swapped counterparts. It seems that having them stay the same, except when Swap replaces Dust or Killer.
But Swap doesn't fit well with either of them, so I think he's more like Cross in the swapped AU, but I digress, he's not who I wanna talk about.
Who I want to talk about is Asylum Sans, or Bandy for short. The little schizophrenic that is obsessed with colorful bandaids, stickers, and sometimes plushies. From what I know of him, his past is mostly a mystery but something happened to his Papyrus, causing him to take on a ghost-like form and hang about the little skellie.
He'd be a perfect parallel to Dust sans, yet being a schizophrenic wouldn't be enough to make him a bad guy.
But what if something happened that made Bandy go off the deep end? Like a certain therapist that recommends putting him on pills to solve the problem of Bandy's schizophrenic episodes. Now, this would absolutely be fine if the pills were correct for his mental illness, but that is not what happens to the little guy.
Instead, they put him on something else; magic suppressors.
From what I have seen, Bandy doesn't use magic in the ward because Mrs. Toriel and Dr. Alphys told him it would be dangerous. He understands that it wouldn't be the best of ideas for him to teleport out of the ward where he can't get the help he needs. So when they suddenly give him little, pink pills, he takes them without question since they had promised him more bandaids if he did.
But they have a negative reaction to the poor skeleton like most things would happen if you take away a person's ability to do something.
Bandy faints due to the effects and hits his head on the floor, causing another change. Of course, Dr. Alphys gives him a check-up and heals the wound, but when the schizophrenic wakes up, his ailment is worse. The new therapist waves it off, of course, giving him a white pill, Bandy's normal prescription, but when the skeleton sees him, he screams due to what he sees in the human, their true intentions.
This would be an everlasting effect as a result of the suppressors they give him with his normal treatment. Anytime Bandy sees someone enter his room for food or check-ups, he stares at them, scooting backward, so they double his prescription.
But what does Asylum see?
Well, he'd see the quote-unquote 'demons' hanging about people, or for a better way to put it, their intentions. Now, with good people like Mrs. Toriel and Dr. Alphys, the demons are small, barely considered a threat in his eyes. Yet when he sees the other doctors and patients, he sees all sorts of monsters, some fusing with their hosts, like when he shrieked upon seeing the new therapist. He saw all of the malice the man had turned them into a creature from nightmares.
Now, as we know with most bodies, they will build up a tolerance if exposed to negative factors. So over time, Bandy's body slowly adapts to resisting the suppressors, causing them to increase the dosage until it eventually stops working on him.
But Bandy still acts docile on his prescription, right?
Wouldn't you know it, one of the employees forgets to order the medicine that Bandy so desperately needs. It would take 2 days for the emergency order to come in.
No big deal, right? Bandy is always friendly to people, even before the new 'prescription', surely nothing bad will happen, right?
Well, Milo Murphy's law states that anything that can happen will happen.
On the second day, Bandy sees the bad Therapist and finally snaps. The suppressors on his magic had ceased working since his body had too much of it. It needed to be expelled.
And what better than the man who had started the torment?
It was all a blur to the skeleton, but it was bloody and brutal. The schizophrenic came to when he had cornered Dr. Alphys and Mrs. Toriel. A bloody pair of scissors in one hand, and a sharp bone in the other. He stared at the weapons before giggling, a manic grin on his face. Asylum knew a lot now, and the two women in front of him had let the therapist do whatever.
So, he finished the job before skipping off to the medicine cabinet.
He needed answers.
It would be quite a sight for the next victim, the person who delivered the medication. Seeing bloodied halls, corpses and dust everywhere.
And just like that, the deliverer would fall by Asylum's hands, and he gets the prescription he needed. So a win-win for him.
I feel like Swapped Dream and Ink would stumble upon the AU by chance and find Asylum playing with the corpse happily.
It's just a thought I had though, just a simple idea since I was bored. Just wanted it to be recorded a bit.

So I have a bunch of Undertale ship kids I'd like to share
So I've been a little shy but it's 2 in the morning so why not post them all with a little bit of information on each one UwU
Tumblr media
Ack it turned sideways -
So this is my very first ship kid and his younger sister (paperjam x fresh)
Pix: seventeen years old, Multi-shipping fanfic writer, extreme sweet tooth, a bit antisocial (prefers to ship from afar instead of socialising), protective of fable (basically her third parent), pansexual, vitiligo baby
Fable: ten years old, Rainbow freckles allover the place, little bundle of self loathing, tini baker, don't miss her off, likes pastel colors and owls, lesbian (when she's old enough to date that is)
Tumblr media
Tay: (Fellswap x swap), seventeen years old, bipolar, aggressive, impulsive, soft on kids, short AF (point it out and you loose a limb, she's sensitive on the topic), wants to be just like fellswap
Onani: (fellswap x lust), eightteen years old, selfish, a bit manipulative, done with your shit, emotional walls higher than the empire state building, tends to drop people like hot potatoes when there is nothing to gain from association, dark past
Starstruck: (lust x outer) nineteen years old, seemingly a sinnamon roll but not, but also not a cinnamon roll (somewhere in between), kisses are basically on the same level with handshakes for her, shameless flirt, can sell you dirt from your own backyard
Tumblr media
Baransu: (error x ink), twenty two years old, is supposed to be dead, naive, is a set of conjoined twins, is cute and he knows it, impulsive, LOVES to climb, cannot speak well
Vermilion: (ink x cross), seventeen years old, emotionally muted, likes to draw food, uses exacto knives, the only emotion they feel at full force is anger, gender = skeleton
Fallow: (ink x asy) thirty years old, schizophrenic, graffiti artist, antisocial, his hands shake constantly, has many dog themed items
Tumblr media
Nightingale: (nightmare x ink), nineteen years old, born without arms (hides it with ink and negativity to make arm prosthetics), shy AF, permanent blush, likes birds, don't touch the scarf, TALL
Shikyo: (nightmare x reaper) nineteen years old, is a mistake and knows it, resents her parents, has power over dreams, stoic, mm Yess tea
Insidious/Sidney: (edge x papyrus), sixteen years old, mind Fuck master, seems sweet but is about to ninja slice your mind, extremely self conscious
Tumblr media
Sans x grillby
Twins (sixteen years old)
Kasai: older twin, shy, you can touch his flames, a bit of a geek, bi
Fireball: seems like a punk, beats up bullies, don't touch it burns, actually a big softy, yes he's named after the drink cause why not? XD
Nicecream guy x burgerpants
Nick: fifteen years old, pissy, trans male, don't touch the ears
Daisy: nineteen, eccentric, pom mom tail, has adhd
Tumblr media
Plague: (error x nightmare), thirty three years old, "you're a plague on my existence" -error, can alter emotions, lazy AF, snarky
Carambola/Cam: (dream x swap) twenty one years old, a bit of a chef, sweetheart, forgiving, loyal to a fault, shy to romance, strong, often mistaken for male
Strawberrykiwi/S.k.: (Watermelon x sugar) eighteen years old, literally smells like his name, kind, selectively stupid, freckles, a bit of a flirt

When I talk to American psychiatrists about Kulkarni’s experiments and raise the notion of treating late-onset schizophrenic psychosis — or indeed any psychosis — in women with estrogen, here is what they say. They urge caution. They say we don’t know what causes schizophrenia, exactly, that estrogen plays a role but no one knows what role. They remind me that many hormones are involved in the menstrual cycle. They say fluctuations in estrogen interact with the brain, but so does aging and so does stress and all of these conditions are present at the onset of menopause, so who’s to say what the real culprit is. They point to the 128 genes connected with schizophrenia and the research linking it possibly to infection or a faulty immune response. They say there have always been vogues in cures for schizophrenia; because it’s so devastating, the temptation to believe in miracles is great. They point to a large study done recently by Israeli and Romanian researchers that failed to replicate Kulkarni’s results. “I do think that estrogen has some connection to schizophrenia, there’s no question about that, but there have been so many false starts,” says Dilip Jeste, a geriatric neuropsychiatrist at the University of California San Diego. “A few will swear by one medication, but the problem comes in generalizing. That doesn’t mean other women should start taking estrogen.” Even David Castle, the discoverer of the second peak, is skeptical of estrogen’s role. “The estrogen story is rather overstated,” he wrote in an email, before adding, “and estrogens have their side effects, as you will be aware.”
Here is what I have to say in response: Estrogen does not have to be a single or straightforward cause of schizophrenia for it to merit the attention of researchers and doctors; it does not have to be a proven miracle cure to represent an opportunity. The treatment of schizophrenia remains today a matter of trial and error, and estrogen represents one promising path forward. Indeed, Sage Therapeutics is currently seeking FDA approval for a progesterone-like synthetic hormone that promises to alleviate postpartum depression, which makes sense. The links between estrogen and mental illness are clear and the prospects for treatment too interesting to dismiss, particularly given how poorly women have been served, over centuries, by doctors who did not want to look squarely at their femaleness in treating them or who saw their problems as expressions of that femaleness and therefore not worth treating.
-Lisa Miller, “Listening to Estrogen hormones have always been a third rail in female mental health. They may also be a skeleton key.”

Courtesy of Thought Crime Resistance, where it received over 300 likes and 4,000 shares.  Similar memes have been sporadically spread by some (though not many) voices on the right, including one by Ted Nugent that got over 100,000 likes and 75,000 shares.  Are these shooters all Democrats?  To find out, we’ll briefly go through each of them, and look at the evidence (if any) that they were.
First, a fair definition of “Democrat” is needed.  For that, we’ll use;
a person who is either a registered voter with, a member of, or a known supporter of the Democratic Party.
If the claim meets this criteria, the statement will be considered true or mostly true, depending on the strength of evidence.  If they can be proven wrong, it will be considered false or mostly false, and if there is no evidence either way, it will be unsubstantiated (which is a nice way of saying this meme is b.s., since the label would be uncalled for)
1. In 1865 a Democrat killed Abraham Lincoln
Mostly False. This refers to the infamous John Wilkes Booth.  Booth was a fairly successful actor, who was also very pro-slavery and anti-Lincoln.  A couple different sources, here and here, give accounts of his life and motivations.  While Booth became active in politics, his only known association with a political party was in the 1850s with the American Party, aka the Know-Nothing Party.  This party was known primarily as an anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic party, but ironically didn’t take a stand on slavery.  The party disbanded in 1860.  During the Civil War, Booth was a spy for the Confederacy, as his job as an actor let him smuggle goods throughout the country.
There is no evidence of Booth’s involvement with the Democratic Party, but he was anti-Lincoln and pro-Confederacy, which meant at the time, anti-Republican.  Therefore, he would most likely support and vote for whatever party opposed Lincoln, which some would consider the Democrats.  However, during the Civil War, even Democrats were split on slavery and the war.  Many in the north ended up supporting Lincoln and became Republicans.  In the south, the Democratic Party halted all operations from 1861-1865.  Booth shot Lincoln in 1865.  He would probably have fit into the racist Southern Democrat mold if given a chance, but labeling him a Democrat would be wrong.
2. In 1881 a Democrat killed James Garfield
Charles Guiteau
False. This refers to Charles Guiteau.  He was quite a character, seeming to annoy and creep out every group he became associated with.  He became involved with a small religious sect in upstate New York called the Oneida Community, lead by John Noyes, who labeled the practice “Bible Communism”.  The biased observer might take that to mean Guiteau was a leftist, but he was never really accepted by the group.  He ended up filing a frivolous lawsuit against them, and eventually wrote threatening letters to the group when that failed.  Noyes described Guiteau as “moody, self-conceited, unmanageable” and addicted to masturbation.  Later, he called him “insane”, and remarked, “I prayed for him last night as sincerely as I ever prayed for my own son, that is now in a Lunatic Asylum.”  Eventually, Guiteau took up politics, where he promoted the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party.
He wrote a speech titled “Garfield vs. Hancock”, which was filled with over-the-top arguments supporting the Republican nominee, Garfield.  After Garfield narrowly won the election, Guiteau deliriously concluded it was his speech that was responsible for the victory, and began incessantly bugging the administration about being appointed Ambassador to Paris.  The Secretary of State, James Blaine, finally told him, “Never bother me again about the Paris consulship so long as you live.”
Guiteau eventually became depressed, and decided Garfield needed to be removed from office because he was on a course to “wreck the once grand old Republican Party“.  He purchased a .45 revolver and shot President Garfield at a train station, who later died from his wounds due to the medical incompetence of the time.
3. In 1963 a socialist killed John F. Kennedy
True.  Putting aside all the conspiracy theories and assuming we’re talking about Lee Harvey Oswald, he was a self-described Marxist.  After being discharged from the Marines, he even traveled to the Soviet Union, and attempted to renounce his citizenship and become Russian.  After a short time in the Soviet Union, he seem underwhelmed with the system, and eventually moved back to the US.  He seemed to identify more with revolutionary Marxism after that, and started admiring Cuba.  Before Kennedy, he attempted to kill General Walker, an outspoken critic of Fidel Castro.
It’s interesting to note that this is the only person on this meme’s list not called a Democrat, but a socialist instead.
4. In 1975 a Democrat shot at Gerald Ford
Mostly False.  Two woman shot at Gerald Ford in 1975, both unsuccessfully.  The first was Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, who was a member of the Manson Family.  The other was Sarah Jane Moore.  While Moore was certainly affiliated with leftist groups, and would likely support a Democrat over a Republican, it would be a stretch to call her a Democrat, as she had no affiliation with the party.  It would be more accurate to describe her as a radical leftist, or Marxist.
5. In 1983 a Democrat shot Ronald Reagan
False.  There is no evidence that John Hinckley, Jr. was a Democrat.  He was clearly mentally ill, and fixated on the movie, Taxi Driver, where Robert DeNiro was a psychotic taxi driver, who contemplated political assassination, as well as rescued a young prostitute played by Jodi Foster.  He became obsessed with Foster, even enrolling in Yale to stalk her.  Initially, he began following President Carter (a Democrat) around, but never went through with an assassination attempt.  His mental health deteriorated at the same time Reagan became president, and Hinckley finally went through with his plan.  Before the attempt, he wrote a letter to Foster explaining how he was doing it for her.  Also, the shooting happened in 1981, not 1983.
6. In 1984 a Democrat killed 22 people in a McDonald’s
Unsubstantiated. There’s no evidence James Huberty, who perpetrated the San Ysidro massacre, was a Democrat.  As a kid, he contracted polio, grew up in Amish country, was abandoned by his mother, and reportedly blamed God for his mom’s absence.  Later in life he held several jobs, including a funeral home undertaker.  Eventually, he adopted conspiracy-type beliefs including a fear of Soviet Aggression, foreign control of the Federal Reserve and the imminent economic collapse of the economy.  He became a self-described survivalist, bought several weapons, and reported believing himself mentally ill shortly before the shooting, even calling a psychologist’s office.  However, due to a clerical error he was never called back, and one day left his family at home to carry out the McDonald’s attack.
7. In 1986 a Democrat killed 15 people in an Oklahoma post office
Unsubstantiated. There’s no evidence Patrick Henry Sherrill, the postal worker for whom “going postal” is known for, was a Democrat.  Sherrill served in the Marine Corps, was a member of the National Guard pistol team, and considered an expert marksman.  His motive for committing the Edmond Post Office shooting was likely his supervisor who had reprimanded him (along with mental illness).
8. In 1990 a Democrat killed 10 people at a GMAC office
Unsubstantiated.  There’s no evidence James Edward Pough was a Democrat.  He was an unskilled construction worker, who earlier in life had murdered his best friend in an argument.  Despite being banned from buying firearms, the authorities dropped the ball and he ended up buying several.  His motivation for attacking the GMAC office was likely because they repossessed his Pontiac Grand Am.
9. In 1991 a Democrat killed 23 people in a Luby’s cafeteria in Killeen, TX
Unsubstantiated. There is no evidence George Hennard was a Democrat.  There is evidence that he had an irrational hatred of women, calling them “female vipers”, but that doesn’t seem to be a political platform of either party.
10. In 1995 a Democrat killed 5 coworkers in a Texas Laboratory
Unsubstantiated. There is no evidence James Simpson was a Democrat.
11. In 1999 a Democrat killed 8 people at a church service
Unsubstantiated.  There is no evidence Larry Ashbrook was a Democrat.  He was an emotionally disturbed, likely schizophrenic man, who before the shootings thought the police was drugging him and the CIA was targeting him.  He had some issue with Christianity, as evidenced during the shooting, but no known link to the Democratic Party.
12. In 2001 a Democrat shot at the White House, aiming for George Bush
False.  No evidence could be found that Robert Pickett was a Democrat.  Furthermore, he didn’t “aim for George Bush”, he fired a shot at the White House, while behind the gates.  According to the Secret Service, Bush was never in danger.  As far as Mr. Pickett, he was a former employee of the IRS, and had lost lawsuits against them for grievances.
13. In 2003 a Democrat killed 7 people at a Lockheed Martin plant
Unsubstantiated.  No evidence could be found that Doug Williams was a Democrat.  Some attributed the workplace shooting to racism, as Williams had apparently made racist remarks at work, but the police stated it was likely random, as most of the injured were white.  The incident appeared to be caused by Williams becoming enraged at a work meeting.  Then, he went to his car for a shotgun and proceeded to shoot up the plant.
14. In 2007 a Democrat killed 32 people in Virginia Tech
False.  Seung-Hui Cho, the 23-year-old Korean student turned shooter at Virginia Tech was an immigrant, not a US citizen.  In Virginia, only citizens are allowed to vote, meaning Cho couldn’t have been a Democratic (or any) voter.  There is no evidence he was involved with any sort of political activity, instead being described as a loner.  In his ramblings prior to the shootings, he did rail against “rich brats” and against Christianity, but no coherent political ideology.
15. In 2010 a Democrat shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed 6 others
False.  Jared Loughner was a registered independent, who didn’t even vote in the 2010 elections.  While he didn’t discuss his political motives, his friend was quoted as saying, “It wasn’t like he was in a certain party or went to rallies.  It’s not like he’d go on political rants.”
16. In 2011 a Democrat killed 12 people in a movie theater
Unsubstantiated.  There is no evidence James Holmes, the Aurora, CO movie shooter, was a Democrat.  There was a Breitbart story claiming he was a registered Democrat, but that was later proven to be wrong, and retracted. Holmes considered attacking an airport initially, but decided against it as it might be confused with terrorism.  He wrote, “Terrorism isn’t the message.  The message is, there is no message.”
17. In 2012 a Democrat killed 7 people in Minneapolis
Unsubstantiated.  This refers to the shooting at Accent Signage Systems, where 5 people (not 7) were killed, including the gunman Andrew Endeldinger.  There is no evidence to support Endeldinger being a Democrat, only a disgruntled employee who was a loner, mentally ill, that recently lost his job there.
18. In 2013 a Democrat killed 26 people in Newtown, CT
Unsubstantiated.  There is no evidence that Adam Lanza was a Democrat.  He was often described as a troubled and fidgety loner that likely suffered from Asperger’s, among other issues.
19. In 2013 a Democrat shot 12 at a Navy Shipyard
Unsubstantiated, but possibly true.  On CNN, one of Aaron Alexis’s friends said the following:
“Aaron wasn’t conservative like I am.  He was more of a liberal type; he wasn’t happy with the former [Bush} administration.  He was more happy with this [Obama] administration- as far as presidential administrations.”
This is the only evidence supporting the claim, and it’s certainly not rock solid, so it couldn’t be reliably claimed.
Conclusion:
Looking at the profiles of all these shooters brings up many common characteristics.  Loner, mental illness, violent outbursts and general creepiness.  Political ideology is generally non-existent or incoherent, particularly among the mass shooters.  Regardless of one’s view on politics or gun control, associating these killers with the Democratic Party (or conversely, with Republicans or Tea Party ideology) is a low blow that’s not backed up by facts, and the argument should be removed from any rational discourse.

Kamala Harris, Police Shootings and ‘Safety’
In her recently released broad-ranging plan for reforming criminal justice, Democratic presidential contender Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) called for a National Police Systems Review Board, based on the model of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), for the review of police shooting cases.
According to her plan, such a board would “collect data and review police shootings and other cases of severe misconduct, and work to issue recommendations and implement safety standards based on evidence revealed in these reviews.”
It was one of the elements of the former California Attorney General’s justice blueprint that got the most attention.
You might expect that, for someone like me—who has been hectoring the criminal justice world about picking up the lessons that the safety experience of fields like aviation and medicine provides—this would be good news.
Well, yes and no.
There is considerably less to Harris’ proposal than meets the eye.
Harris’ proposal is not “innovative,” as some commentators claim.  Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld suggested using the NTSB as a model for examining errors over 20 years ago.
Moreover, the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing included “sentinel event reviews” of bad outcomes on its list of recommendations. Some police forces, Tucson’s for example, already conduct serious “critical incident reviews” of dangerous encounters.
The federal Department of Justice, at least when it has a properly led and resourced Civil Rights Division, has the power to review and prosecute police shootings and other serious police criminal misconduct.
It isn’t even clear that Harris’s proposal is especially serious. It makes no effort to state (or, perhaps, it makes an effort not to state) whether it contemplates “performance reviews” of individual frontline practitioners or full, forward-looking, “event reviews” that analyze systems weaknesses in training, resources, communication, and policies in overlapping “silos.”
You aren’t really talking about safety if you aren’t wrestling with those problems—that is, unless you’re looking at prevention of repeats, not simply at blame and punishment for past outcomes.
Trying to blame and prevent at the same time will cripple your pursuit of both of those goals unless you have taken the time to disentangle them in your own mind.
At this point it is possible to marshal a compelling literature that undertakes this work by applying modern Safety concepts to criminal justice.
A bibliography compiled for the National Institute of Justice for National Criminal Justice Reference Service librarian Scott Hertzberg is regularly updated to track safety materials with criminal justice cross-over potential.
Even in the specific area of police shootings there have been multiple sophisticated analyses by Joanna Schwartz, John Hollway, Sean Smoot, David Klinger, Lawrence Sherman and others that mobilize safety concepts and draw on the experiences of other fields in utilizing them. All of these writers argue for widening the lens beyond the cop who pulled the trigger.
Harris’s proposal doesn’t tell us much about how they will be incorporated into the planning.
But the fact that this proposal is less than it might be does not mean that it is nothing.
Yes, it could be that Harris sees “safety” and “NTSB” mostly as magic words: ways to talk about crime that will finesse her own record of discordant choices as San Francisco’s District Attorney in police shooting cases. Maybe “safety,” for her, is just a way to promise to do something—but without backtracking on what she has done already and alienating the people for whom she did it.
Maybe the safety Harris is thinking of is her own.
Even so, in the perverse fundamental logic of our public life, politicians find it first advantageous to say something, then it becomes attractive to send the staff off to seek advice, to read, and to learn. This may be exactly backward, but it’s how things go.
After all, they think, why would you invest energy in learning about something you can never talk about?
But Safety! Who can be against Safety? The fact that Harris sees an advantage here might be an important harbinger of things to come. Others will see it too.
Now, the challenge is to make sure we know what Safety means and don’t vandalize an opportunity to make it work in criminal justice—to leave behind our sterile battle over Crime Control v. Due Process, and start some productive investigation into ensuring everyone’s safety: the citizens’, the cops’, and the communities’.
Is Safety a Palliative, or a Disrupter?
Harris is caught in a tough bind: her prosecutorial experience, which once seemed to be a sterling credential, is now a liability among many activist Democrats. Talking about Safety could seem to present a plausible way out: a way to thread the needle between police unions and Black Lives Matter activists and to calm things down.
But take a look at what Safety practice would require in a well-known case from Harris’ term as San Francisco DA and you can see that far from offering a muted version of business-as-usual, the Safety perspective upsets the whole apple cart.
When San Francisco police broke down a door inside a group home for mentally disabled people in 2008 and shot a 56-year-old resident, then-District Attorney Kamala Harris didn’t charge the officers with a crime.
Instead, she prosecuted the schizophrenic woman who was severely injured in the shooting for assaulting the police.
The jury refused to convict; the case was not retried; and the resident ultimately settled a civil case with the city.
From the Safety perspective the decision whether to charge the cops or charge the victims can be made rightly or wrongly. But that decision is seen as a bad place to stop. If you want to understand the outcomes generated by a complex system you need an all-stakeholders approach, specifically aimed at “forward-looking accountability.”
You need to begin by understanding that, prosecution or no prosecution, lawsuit or no lawsuit, no one wants this to happen again. The goal of a Safety approach would be not a report for people to read, but the creation of a vibrant and sustained culture of safety in which everyone is continuously working to included their contribution to a just and harm-free collective outcome.
You need the perspective of the frontline cops, and you need to understand the influences that shaped their choices. What was their training? How were communications handled? How were they equipped? What about the shift work demands? Did the department have a Critical Incident mental health worker capacity?
No one would believe a Safety inquiry could be confined to one “silo:” police, prosecution, or mental health. Did the public health system have plans for summoning police? You need to hear from the patients’ families and the frontline group home workers.
The Safety inquiry can’t end with “Who? You have to ask “Why did people zig when in hindsight we think they should have zagged?”
In important ways the Safety approach also disrupts what we might call the Ecology of Reform.
Neither a single federal entity nor the tradition of handing down wisdom from the foundations and think tanks can accommodate the challenge of a landscape that includes over 16,000 police departments. The center of gravity of a genuine safety effort will have to be in state and local contexts where the harms occur, and the gritty reality of how things are can’t be skipped along the way to how they should be.
Things are as they are for reasons.
Follow the “Our Team” link on any reform-minded organization’s website and you will see an array of well brought up and analytically impressive researchers. Often they have had some experience in the system—a few years as an Assistant United States Attorney, for example—and often that experience has deepened their commitment.
But although they have been in the system, they are not of the system, and they are certainly not going back. The challenges raised by their new 25-point checklist won’t be theirs to confront.
The bet has to be placed on the frontline worker, not on the mandarins in Washington and New York. The reform organizations and entities such as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) have important rules in supporting the capacity building that safety-oriented reforms require. (The NIJ Sentinel Events Initiative, with which I’ve been involved, provides one example of how this can be approached.)
Expertise, particularly in identifying, harvesting, and interpreting data can play an important role in assisting productive all-stakeholders “event reviews” on the state and local level.
And, as with the NTSB, the centralized entities can play an indispensable role in disseminating the lessons of local reviews throughout the community: illuminating dangerous conditions and influences; emphasizing sources of resilience.
But this means not one new Board, but a whole new paradigm.
Safety as a Fig Leaf
The disruption that Safety thinking promises is at this point long overdue.
The danger is that Senator Harris has seized on a rhetorical flourish that might short-circuit this shift—a way to talk about doing something without doing too much.
“Safety” could easily be hyped on a something-for-everyone basis that forecloses realizing the genuine promise of the robust body of learning that aviation has earned, and medicine and other fields have begun to adapt.
One of the principles of the Safety people is that nothing is ever “fixed.” Any “fix” you contrive is under immediate attack from its environment. That will be true of any National Police Review Board too.
Let’s hope we can look to Safety as a something we will have to keep continuously working to improve, and not stop at a new agency, a new Board.

Website Readability Guide: Make Your Website Reader-Friendly
Tumblr media
A lot of online ventures offer a really terrible website readability. Considering that almost everything about a website is communicated in text, this is a terrible situation.
These difficult to read websites have followed a bad design model. Digital publications need to be able to compete with printed ones in terms of readability.
After all, a website can be instantaneously delivered or accessed almost anywhere, involves far less time and money to produce, and can have a much narrower niche while still making a profit.
Quality is a major issue, however, and a bad reading experience causes many people to stick with print as their main form of reading information.
Readability in web design is not doomed, however. It just requires careful, deliberate design choices that require surprisingly little effort.
Why Are There So Many Issues with Website Readability?
Many web designers have not been focused on readability the way they should. A part of this is that the old models of design worked well with how websites were used not that long ago, but they don’t work so well on the current web.
Tumblr media
This old way of designing a site worked very well to make sure elements like header, navigation bars, footers, sidebars, links, and ads worked and behaved consistently. Content often got shoved aside and wasn’t often treated as a priority.
Newer methods of web design have made it much easier to swap out those previously finicky elements and fix them, so now web designers can focus on the true purpose of most websites: content.
The key to getting in the right mindset to maximize website readability is to use the same mindset used for print formatting: design for readability first. Content should not be an afterthought. Once you get into this way of thinking, it can guide you along through the rest of the principles of website readability.
Use Your Font Sizes Wisely
Tumblr media
Font size is very important to the readability of a website. A large font is essentially a giant “look at me” sign and should be used for text that’s very important. A small font is generally less important and should be used for less crucial information.
Font size should also be used to differentiate between sections on a page. For instance, include a very large headline for the page title, then larger sub-headlines above new sections of regular sized text. You should not use more than three different font sizes for the page (or the whole site, either).
There might be times and occasions when you have to make exceptions, but it’s a solid general rule. This rule also only applies to the main body of your website, not additional elements like ads, labels, superscript, subscript, and other items.
What should you use, Serif or Sans Serif?
Sans Serif should be your go-to for your body copy. It is often more readable.
Serif Fonts
Tumblr media
Serif font is the traditional font, used for hundreds of years. It looks more old fashioned and has a slightly more elaborate touch.
The serifs of Serif fonts are the flowing marks at the points of the letters. These serifs lead the eye to the next letter, but it only works in high resolution. At low resolutions, this additional complexity actually makes the text less clear.
Sans Serif Fonts
Tumblr media
Sans Serif literally means ‘without serif’. This font is much simpler and much more simplistic. They work better at low resolutions because of this. A lot of these fonts have been created to be used in display and on electronics.
The most readable Sans Serif fonts are broad, with a lot of space between letters to help their web readability. There are lots of sans serif fonts that you can use for your body text. Use a broad, spacious font that allows for each letter to be read easily at any resolution.
Use Just The Fonts You Need
Tumblr media
Fonts lend personality to a page. However, throwing in too many different kinds of fonts can quickly grow confusing for a viewer.
It can make the page seem schizophrenic. Pick one or two fonts and use just those.
Also, the eye simply will not track that many different fonts that well. Some simply do not look good together. Try to avoid using more than three typefaces on a single page.
Draw attention to certain words
Tumblr media
Draw attention to certain words or elements through adjusting styles before you try changing fonts. Italicize, underline, or bold words. If you’re looking to draw attention to a whole section, you might want to use a colored background.
Overusing any of these elements will do the opposite of what you want, making the reading experience bland and also making it difficult for a viewer to read.
Tumblr media
Bold will increase contrast, which will only work when it has something to contrast against. Italics are good for emphasizing words or short phrases.
Don’t use italics for blocks of text, otherwise, they will reduce overall readability. Underlining works similarly, but you should double make sure that the underline isn’t mistaken for your site’s hyperlinks.
You might want to have the hyperlinks in another color to make the difference clear. Blue is the most recognizable, traditional choice.
Readability Guidelines
Use simple, plain words. Avoid fancier words and made-up terms.
Use short sentences. Avoid convolution and compound sentences.
Stay in the active voice as much as possible.
If you’re aiming at a broad audience, your target is an 8th-grade reading level.
For smaller, more highly educated audience, you should still try to keep the reading level fairly low, around a 12th-grade reading level.
Testing Readability
You can find a lot of readability calculators without too much effort. There is one built into Microsoft Word that utilizes the Flesch-Kincaid system.
You can find it under Review > Spelling & Grammar for some versions, while others have it under File > Options > Proofing. There’s also a readability formula called the Fry score, which is preferred by many people. Do some research and see what helps you create a more readable website.
Conclusion
Readability in website design can’t be emphasized enough.
A lot of increasing readability will involve a bit of trial and error, but once you do, you will be able to immediately see the results.
