Just out of curiosity what's your favorite chapter from catch-22 and why?
I love questions, thank you so much! I also took a few hours to think critically about this, and it didn't become an easier question. I like the first 12 chapters best (what can I say? I'm an optimist!) as that's where you get a lot of the earlier character interactions down, and they're humorous in a different way than the rest of the book.
My favorite chapter is probably Chapter 4, which--although short--I find particularly entertaining. It also has my hands-down favorite exchange in the book (years, years, years), and I'm fairly certain all my favorites of the minor characters are at least mentioned in Chapter 4. It's not devoid of the tragedy later in the book (where are the snowdens of yesteryear?), but it's still very humor-oriented and philosophical. It's very nearly the Platonic ideal of a chapter....
Other runners-up include: Chapter 12 (Bologna), Chapter 9 (Wintergreen), and Chapter 8 (Schiesskopf; I like it for the Clevinger's Trial portion--I feel like it sets up early in the book the kind of bureaucracy we're supposed to expect in the rest of the world)
#radio show host#i'm fairly sure the only thing counting against chapter 4 is that Doc Daneeka is in it and i hate doc daneeka vehemently#thank you so much for asking me a question! i'm elated about this--after my most recent re-read i had a lot of thoughts lol#catchllection
