Prompt 15 - Pumpkin Patch

Previous part First part

Sirius squinted against the light, flinging an arm over his eyes to block out more of the light, his other hand clinging to Remus’s fur as he led him forward, and just like that they were back in gloomy darkness. 

Sirius blinked furiously, trying to get his eyes used to the sudden change in light and took in their surroundings. 

They were in a large pumpkin patch. The entire patch was filled with pumpkins of various sizes. Some were tiny, no bigger than a mouse, while some were a size you’d expect from a pumpkin, and then there were the monstrously large ones. They towered over the pair, blocking their view of what little light lit the area. 

“Wow,” Sirius said, impressed, as he ran his hand across the hard skin of the nearest pumpkin that just happened to be the size of a Hagrid’s hut. He had no idea why anyone would want or need to grow pumpkins of this magnitude. 

“Hello dear. My, my what have you done to poor Remus Lupin?” Sirius spun around and came face to face with Ethel.

“Lucifer! What are you doing here?” Sirius asked in shock. 

“Please don’t use that name in front of me, dear, it makes me break out in hives,” Ethel’s lilting voice chastised him as a little shiver shook her body. 

“Sorry,” Sirius apologised. “Wait, you can see me?”

“I’ve always been able to see you, dear. I knew who you were the second you stepped into my shop with the poor Lupin boy,” she looked up sadly at Remus. “Oh, sweetheart, you did such a silly thing,” Her voice was soft and sad. Remus’s head drooped. He knew what he was signing up for when he summoned Sirius, but it still hurt Sirius knowing what he’d done to Remus. 

He jumped as Ethel broke the quiet by clapping her hands together loudly. “Not to worry though, my darlings. It’s time to change all that. You’ve proved yourselves enough now. So now it is time to claim your rewards. Into the pumpkins, if you please,” She said cheerfully, waving them towards two of the larger ones sitting side by side. Sirius looked worriedly over at Remus. But the soul trapped in the body of a Grim was already padding forward to the larger of the two pumpkins. Ethel waved her hand, and a door opened in the side of it. Remus stepped through the door, and it sealed behind him. Sirius rushed over to it and banged on the side. 

“What are you going to do to him?” He gasped out as he tried to get to Remus. Ethel put one of her bony hands on his arm. 

“I will heal him. Come on now, it’s your turn,” And she gently guided him to the other pumpkin. She waved her hand as she had before, and another door presented itself to him. “Why am I going in? This is about saving Remus.” He turned, not wanting to go meet whatever waited for him. 

“It is for you both,” She said before pushing him backwards with far more strength than Sirius expected the frail lady to possess. He stumbled through the gap and into the inside of the pumpkin. “And don’t think I don’t know you tried to steal from me, ti diawl bach! (You little devil!)” Ethel shouted at him as the pumpkin sealed itself. 

It was pitch black inside. Sirius had to crouch as it wasn’t big enough for him to stand up in. His breath came quickly as he began to panic. What if it really was all a joke his mother had set up? What if Ethel put him in there to get him away from Remus?

“REMUS!!!!” He screamed, bashing his fists on the hard, slimy insides of his pumpkin. “REMUS!!!!” He called out again so loudly his voice cracked. That’s when he felt it. A storage wave of energy crept over him, pulling at his magic. NO!!!!” He yelled as it began to steal his magic away. Remus’s howls, muted by the pumpkin skins, made Sirius fight harder. “NO!!!” He growled in determination. He screwed his eyes shut and threw off the strange energy, trying again to escape. The strange energy came back stronger this time and flung him against the side of the pumpkin, the fibrous strands that held the seeds wrapping around him and holding him still. The energy tore through him and stripped him of his magic, and with a final scream, everything went black.
