Chapter 40- 10 things i hate about you ☕️

It had been a few days since your boyfriend’s new movie came out. You weren’t excited with the idea of watching it in the theater, mostly because you wanted him to see your full reaction.

I mean, it’s not everyday where your boyfriend stars in the lead role of a rom com with his co star being the girl he almost led on.

That’s why with the modern age of streaming services, you waited for the movie to be put on Hulu.

It was your weekly movie night with Scaramouche and it was your turn to pick out the movie. With a shit eating grin, you typed in the name of the film.

“You’re not being serious are you?” Scaramouche looked at you deadpanned.

“Of course I am! I haven’t seen the movie yet and I need you to hear my thoughts as I watch it.”

“I really don’t need to.”

You gave him a glare before pressing play on the movie. He tried protesting but sighed and leaned back onto the couch once he realized he wasn’t going to win.

You scooted closer to him as he put his arm around you.

The movie began and his first scene is in the guidance counselor’s office. You didn’t really know what the movie was about beforehand, therefore the Australian accent caught you off guard.

“What the fuck? Since when was your character Australian?” You questioned him, almost like you were interrogating him on something serious.

“Umm since forever? Do you even know what this movie is about?”

“Not really but how much do I have to pay you to do that accent forever?”

“You can pay me by shutting the fuck up,” He replied in his Australian accent, smirking.

Humbled.

You didn’t know what to say in response and just turned back to watch the film silently.

In 30 minutes you’ll probably realize what you should’ve said in that moment.

It was now the scene where Scaramouche’s character, Patrick, is getting paid to go out with Haypasia’s character, Kat.

“Wow Patrick is an asshole just like the actor playing him,” You commented, a hint of amusement in your voice.

You could see Scaramouche rolling his eyes from your peripheral. He didn’t bother with engaging in your commentary. He knew if he opened his mouth, you two would just bicker the whole movie.

Plus, he was slightly curious on what you thought about his performance.

He would just never admit to it.

“Oh and he’s smoking during school. Whoever wrote this must’ve knew you-“

You couldn’t finish your sentence because Scaramouche took a handful of popcorn and shoved it in your mouth.

This was your cue to be quiet.

“You’re just too good to be true. Can’t take my eyes off of you,” Scaramouche’s voice could be heard through the tv.

You were watching intensely at the screen as he continues to sing the rest of the song with the marching band in the background.

The frantic running of the scene made you giggle due to how out of character it seemed for him.

“I didn’t know you could do all that,” You said in between snickers.

“I wasn’t very excited when I had to film it.”

“Aw but you look so cute!”

“Pay attention to the next scene.”

You didn’t know what he meant by that so you just looked back at the screen and waited.

Kat broke Patrick out of detention and now they’re on a date. They’re hitting each other with paint filled balloons.

You thought it was sweet, sure it was a bit weird to see, but you knew it was just acting.

It wasn’t until they kissed for the first time when Scaramouche finally spoke again, “This was filmed when me and her were having that thing. If you even want to call it that.”

Oh this bitch.

“Shit isn’t so funny now is it?” Scaramouche teased.

Before you could even scold him for saying something like that to you, he gave you a small peck on the lips.

“But I thought about you the entire time,” His words were quiet but you could tell he was being sincere.

You wanted to give him an earful, but decided against it.

He’ll hear it another time.

“I hate the way you talk to me and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate the way you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick and it even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate when you make me laugh, even worst when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around and the fact that you didn’t call. But mostly I hate that I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.”

It was getting close to the end of the movie and you were surprised on how much you liked it. Despite your previous comments, it was an entertaining film and it wasn’t dragged out for too long. You thought it was cute and fun to see him star in a non action or horror movie for once.

“What did you think?” Scaramouche asked as soon as the ending credits rolled on the screen.

You hummed before responding, trying to think of the right words to say, “It was nice.” You had more to say, but you wanted to tease him for a bit.

“Is that all?”

“Mhm,” You got up from the couch, grabbing the empty popcorn bowl to put in the sink.

Scaramouche followed you to the kitchen, “Nothing else?”

“Nope,” You were standing by the sink, not sparing a glance in his direction, “Why do you want to know so bad? You didn’t seem too excited to hear my thoughts while we were watching. Now you’re so curious. I wonder.”

Luckily your back was faced towards him or else he would’ve seen you fighting back a smile.

“Oh so just fuck me I guess?” He scoffs.

He knew what you were trying to do, but he likes you so much that he’ll humor you for a while.

You turned around to look at him, “I mean I thought the actor that played Cameron was fine as fuck if that’s what you want to hear,” You replied nonchalantly as you tried to walk past him.

He stepped right in front of you with his arms crossed, “Is that so? Tell me more then.” His voice was more monotone than you expected but he couldn’t stop his smug expression.

You weren’t one to back down however, “Yeah I mean I just couldn’t stop staring at him. I feel like he carried the movie. He was easily the best character,” Your sarcastic tone didn’t go unnoticed.

Scaramouche leaned towards your face and while you thought he was going to kiss you, he only flicked your forehead. He let out a small chuckle before walking back to the living room.

“You’re such an asshole!” You shouted from the kitchen.

“And you’re a pain in the ass!” He shouted back.

“What a little bitch,” You mumbled to yourself before joining him again.

Even if others may view the relationship as a bit odd, you two knew you couldn’t be with any other. You two matched perfectly, some may call it soulmates or twin flames.

You guys never talked about those sort of things but it was pretty clear that you both know each other better than anyone ever could.

Scaramouche loved how you can put him in his place. Most people are too scared to do so or avoid him all together.

You don’t care. He doesn’t intimidate you. Which in turn, makes him fall more for you.

On the other hand, you love how Scaramouche is quick to bring you down to reality. He doesn’t sugarcoat things like how others might do. He isn’t one to cater towards someone’s feelings if he truly cares about them. If you’re being an unreasonable asshat, he’ll be the first to tell you.

All these things do lead to constant bickering. His quick mouth and your sarcasm was like watching an in person soap opera. Even if sometimes it does get tiring to listen to when people hang out with you guys.

No matter what, you both were content and blissful.

Sure things could’ve been handled way differently. It was never the most healthiest or smoothest ways of doing things. However, if you two had to relive the previous conflicts if it means being together in end.

You both would do it again in a heartbeat.

“So my manager leaked my information.” It’s not a question anymore.

Scara nods apologetically as if he was at fault, eyes gleaming with genuine sincerity. This is the third time, he’s been vulnerable with you. He guides you up the cobblestone path, leading you closer to the Estate’s courtyard. The sun has already grazed its goodbye, only the moon rests above, gleaming at you and Scara. The darkness along the trees, shrubs, and boulders around the garden is eerie but something about his presence soothes your worries—something about his rare smile, hushed voice, and messy hair.

Perhaps it’s everything about him.

You pause in your tracks, watching over the waves on the beach—hands on the wooden fences standing around the courtyard, “Do you think they’ll believe me?”

“They’ll believe you once you tell your side.”

Doubt lingers, “What if they don’t?”

“Then they’re all fuck heads with no hobbies,” He swerves his head, now facing you with narrow eyes, and brows pulled together, “It’s stupid, how some of them graduated with degrees but have no basic sense of empathy or respect. They’re all entitled, gullible, and hypocritical assholes who use every opportunity to deflect their insecurities on others. It’s a crazy world we live in.”

The scowl on his face is almost laughable—how angry at the world he is on your behalf. You take note of Scara's wrath, experiencing it is not for the weak. Although, you don’t need to worry. His patience for you seems limitless.

“I can’t believe Jean lets you handle your social media accounts. You have no filter.”

He scoffs, “She doesn’t, but I find my way. They have to change the password every other week or else I might be permanently banned on every platform.”

You chuckle at his smug expression, “I want your confidence.”

“You already have it, you just need to use it.”

You avoid his gaze, “You sure do have a lot of faith in me.”

“Because I believe in you.”

For how long? You heard those same words before and they never kept their promises. Your agency, your manager. It was blind trust. Funny how life works.

“You blindly trusted me.”

You didn’t mean to say that. But it can’t be helped. What if one day you disappoint him? Will he leave too, like your manager? Or your fans?

“I knew you wouldn’t do that.”

You shake your head in guilt, realizing you let your doubts slip. Overthinking kills the mood, “It’s just that—“

“Am I wrong for wanting to be with you?” His voice softened.

You squint your eyes, unsure of what he means. You open your mouth to say something, anything to fill the silence, but nothing comes out.

So he inches forward, his left hand rests on your cheek, the other latches down to your waist, gentle and warm—you lean in to his touch, “Is it wrong to be this close?”

“No but—“

“For once please,” He sounds desperate, “Fuck what they think, focus on me and you. They can all go to hell.”

“So tell me: Is it wrong to need you at every moment?”

Once again you shake your head, this time with no interruptions.

“Is it wrong to be with you? To wake up every morning knowing I’m yours—knowing I can flirt shamelessly without doubting your feelings? Knowing I can write songs about you without hiding my love. Knowing I can feed you my favorite dishes without asking: am I doing too much? Or buy you things that remind me of you because not a single day goes by without your presence in my fucked up head.”

You feel tears welling up in your eyes. Everything is blurry but your gaze remains on Scara. Only him, because it has always been him.

“Am I wrong for feeling this way?” He whispers softly—so gentle that you want to apologize for trying to push him away.

You wrap your arms around his neck, “Kiss me.”

“Can I really?”

“Please.”

He does.

He does like his life depends on it.

You first found this little spot at the end of your senior year.

The untamed greenery yields with a satisfying crunch as you dismount from Scaramouche’s motorcycle. A cool breeze brushes against your face as you eventually arrive at a clearing that overlooks the Inazuman cityscape. Towering skyscrapers command the horizon, windows reflecting the vibrant neon lights that litter the urban skyline. The air here is alive with the hum of insects, replacing the commotion of the city you’ve grown used to.

This view hasn’t changed at all, but you can’t say the same for yourself. Or for the person you’re with.

“You know,” Scaramouche starts, leaning against the railing. “You didn’t need to drag me all the way out here just to ask me how I’m doing.”

You give him an unimpressed look. “I didn’t drag you anywhere, thank you. I wanted to go here and you happily agreed.” A white lie. Both of you knew that.

Your gaze sweeps across the breathtaking view from the elevated terrace, catching the glimmer of city lights and distant stars. “Besides, I know you like this spot.”

It’s been a year since the two of you last stepped here. A year since Scaramouche returned to Inazuma.

A year since you asked him to live with you.

"I'm sorry for dragging you into this mess." The words don't feel like a sufficient apology. Even before your deal, he’s been subjected to tabloid gossip and rumors just by being your friend. Now he’s being bombarded by the press more than ever.

Scaramouche scoffs, "Don't be stupid. I was the one who proposed the deal in the first place."

“We could end it early,” you start. “I mean our projects are guaranteed to be published. The two of us could even gain a bit of clout if we time it right.”

“I get that you’re concerned about my safety, but I know how to hide.” he rebuts. To be fair, he does have a point. He and his sister did grow up in the public eye because of who their mothers are. Well-respected journalist Yae Miko and multi-award-winning actress Raiden Ei. Who doesn’t know their names in this industry?

It’s been a while since Scaramouche last spoke with them. Their relationship never really went back to normal after what happened with his aunt.

It was all over the news when it happened. Actress Raiden Makoto dies in fatal car crash — her sister, her nephew, and her niece sustain minor injuries. It made headlines for a month before the world moved on.

You know this. It’s why he hates being in cars, after all.

After a minute of silence, Scaramouche breaks the silence with a voice laced with both determination and a hint of resignation..

“Once our deal is over and everyone mourns the death of our relationship, I’ll move back to Sumeru and we can stay on friendly terms. It’s the best-case scenario for us.”

“That won’t be necessary. But you being harassed on the daily was never a part of the deal.” Liar. You knew from the beginning that this torment would be a part of his life again if he accepted. You even went as far as to warn him.

And yet he chooses to stay with you, even if it’s only because of your deal. Why?

It’s likely due to the potential backlash he’ll receive if the two of you were to break up. You’re not blind to the hate the two of you get on a daily basis. But is this really easier?

“Me going back to Sumeru after all of this is said and done is for the best, and you know it. Rumors would just stir up if the two of us still lived together after we split up.

“And I don’t care about the harassment. I knew what I was getting into when I made that deal with you. I’m not stupid,” he turns to face you, his indigo-blue eyes reflecting fragments of the night sky. “And neither are you. So stop thinking you can get rid of me that easily.”

His words are laced with a gentleness you’re unused to. Here he is, saying he’ll leave while saying he’ll stay with you. What the hell is his problem?

But whether you like it or not, he’s here with you for the time being. And damn it, you’ll cling to every last second with him if it’s the last thing you’ll do.

Getting out of your seat and walking towards Ms. Lisa's desk after everyone left to minimize potential embarrassment, you quickly claimed your phone and gave a quick, curt, apology before quickly running out the door and being met with Lyney's signature teasing grin.

"Don't start."

"Never did."

Lynette shortly followed, tapping his shoulder signifying that they were going to head to their next class together and you waved a temporary goodbye to the both of them before heading to your own locker.

184, 184, 184....

You chanted like a mantra in your head as you scoured the hallway for your locker, you knew where it was, it was just a bit hard to adjust to the new location.

A little while after searching for a bit, you finally managed to make your way over to your new designated locker. A bright pink post it note stuck onto the bland metal door with your last name written on it with bold sharpie to avoid confusion.

You plucked of the piece of paper off the door and slipped a few of your textbooks in plus a few binders, you were about to continue organizing before a tap on your shoulder interrupted your cleaning time.

"Could you move a bit?"

Vibrant violet eyes met your's and for a second you were lost for words. The boy didn't look familiar, maybe he was a transfer student?

"Oh, sorry, my bad."

You nervously shifted to the side a bit so the peculiar stranger could access his own locker.

Curiosity had gotten to you and you were about to ask for his name, but then he was promptly tackled by Venti, who's name you only knew because he was very adamant on getting you to join band in sophomore year.

"Scara!"

"Venti- Do that again and I will kill you-"

Didn't seem like the most sociable type, maybe keeping your distance was for the best.

Other than the encounter with your new locker mate, nothing else during the day was notable.

...is what you would have said if he wasn't everywhere you went.

Second, third, fourth period, if you can count it, he was right there.

And your school was pretty big, so chances of having him in every single one of your classes were low.

But lo and behold some omnipotent being seemed to rig the system and just pelted this random kid face first into your life.

He seemed to catch on to it as well, but never actually mentioned anything, nor even talked to you either.

Your first first official conversation took place during an assembly at the end of the day to celebrate the start of the new school year, and to welcome the freshmen (that Furina still held a vehement disdain for.)

When the afternoon announcement came on calling down each of the grades, year by year, to head to the auditorium, you found yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with said boy as everyone else seemed to be shoving their way forward to find their friends.

Which you would have also been doing too, if you weren't already completely drained by now.

(Seriously Mr. Zhongli, homework on the first day? Who do you think you are?)

You turned your gaze to your 'new' classmate next to you, who was still mindlessly moving ahead like the rest of your class whilst scrolling on his phone.

Maybe you should try and strike up a conversation with him? Maybe he isn't a big fan of social interactions, but getting on his good side would certainly be convenient seeing as how much you would have to see him throughout the school year.

Hi! My name is (Y/N), what's your's?

You were nearing the entrance of the auditorium and you couldn't spot any of your friends yet, so maybe it kind of was a last ditch effort on your part, but it couldn't hurt.

Steeling your resolve as your class finally stepped foot into the large room, you properly turned to look at the boy and got your introduction ready in your head.

"Hey-"

"Scara! There you are!"

Suddenly, a significantly taller figure tackled the other boy into a hug, interrupting your valiant effort to befriend the strange boy.

"Childe you're gonna choke me someday."

"You don't see more for the whole day and I don't even get a 'hi'? You're heartless man."

Suddenly Childe, (who you now only realized was Childe) turned to you this time, and your heart seemed to give out on you in that very moment.

"Oh, hey (Y/N)! I didn't know you two knew each other-"

"We don't-"

"-Don't mind him he's just going through a phase. Wanna sit with us?"

Wait- Wait what?! Did he just- There's no way it was that easy-

"I'd love to-"

"(Y/N)! We were looking for you!"

You heard Lyney yell from a few seats away, Chlorinde was also with your friends, next to Navia, she offered you a quick and polite smile and wave. Furina was patting a seat in between her and Navia, Mona was on her phone before greeting you. And Lynette mouthed 'I'm so sorry' from her seat next to Lyney because she was the only one who seemed to realize how shit her brother's timing was.

"Well, looks like you found your friends, I'll see you around yeah?"

You just nodded and muttered a soft 'Yeah, totally..." as the boy walked away with his arm slinged around his friend's shoulder presumably chatting his ear off.

You walked towards your friends, waving at the other girls before glaring at Lyney, who's shoulder was promptly swatted by Lynette.

"Fucking dumbass she was this close to getting one-on-one time with Childe!"

You slumped into your seat as you sighed.

Fate really did hate you huh?
