Thoughts on the Purple Scapular?
So, my only exposure to the purple scapular was through an interview with Fr. Chad Ripperger (pls no judgment). From what I understand, it is connected to a Breton mystic who suggested that everyone who wears it will be protected from "the Chastisement" leading up to the Three Days of Darkness.
So, I'll tell you right off the bat, I am Three Days of Darkness-skeptical. The Book of Revelation mentions that the Kingdom of the Beast will experience a period of darkness in which its inhabitants will bite their tongues in agony and curse God, but Revelation is an incredibly enigmatic and deeply symbolic book. From what I understand, Three Days of Darkness end-times predictions are only about a century or so older than Rapture theology... and I think Rapture theology is a load of hooey, so...
That being said, I think the imagery of the Purple Scapular itself is pretty awesome. On one side you have the La Pieta with an angel cradling Jesus's feet, and on the other you have the nails of the cross dripping His Precious Blood into a Chalice surrounded by the crown of thorns. That's metal as frick, and if I didn't already wear the brown scapular I might wear that as a devotional sacramental for that reason alone.
Tumblr media
I personally wouldn't put much stock in it protecting us from any end-of-days events, but it's not like the Church has condemned it. And whether you believe in the prophecy or not... c'mon. It looks so cool.

MIRACLE 1:
St. John Vianney, the Cure D’Ars, relates a story of a young lady who, having decided to consecrate her life to religion, sought the holy pastor of Ars, Saint John Vianney, for a general confession.
When she finished relating her sins, St. John Vianney asked her if she was not forgetting something. The girl, upon recollecting her thoughts, could not recall anything else. The holy priest then proceeded to refresh her memory.
He asked her if she remembered a certain dance where she encountered a handsome young man with whom she desired to dance, but who, in turn, only danced with the other girls, passing her up.
Surprised, again she replied in the affirmative, that such was indeed true. The Cure D’Ars then asked her if she remembered how downcast she had felt at the snub, and how, upon leaving the ballroom, she had glanced back once more and had seen the young man dancing with a girl, but this time there were two small blue lights under his feet.
Again she agreed and confirmed that in fact she had seen the two blue lights under the youth’s feet, but that, finding them strange, she could not account for them.
The Saint then said: "You were hurt because this handsome, well-to-do young man had not danced with you. My dear, you should be filled with the deepest gratitude toward the Mother of God, our dear Blessed Mary ever Virgin who has so wonderfully and miraculously protected!"
The startled young penitent stuttered, "Why, whatever do you mean, Father?"
Saint John Vianney then explained to her that the young man was in fact the Devil in human form, and that the only reason why he would not dance with her was because she was wearing the holy Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
"My dear child", the holy priest responded. "that man was in reality a demon from hell and danced with every girl in serious sin. He kept away from you because you alone were wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel!"
MIRACLE 2:
A young man in Perugia once promised the devil that if he would help him to commit a sinful act which he desired to do, he would give him his soul; and he gave him a writing to that effect, signed with his blood. The evil deed was committed, and the devil demanded the performance of the promise.
He led the young man to a well, and threatened to take him body and soul to hell if he would not cast himself into it. The wretched youth, thinking that it would be impossible for him to escape from his enemy, climbed the well-side in order to cast himself into it, but terrified at the thought of death, he said to the devil that he had not the courage to throw himself in, and that, if he wished to see him dead, he himself should thrust him in. The young man wore about his neck the scapular of the sorrowing Mary; and the devil said to him: Take off that scapular, and I will thrust you in.
But the youth, seeing the protection which the divine mother still gave him through that scapular, refused to take it off, and after a great deal of altercation, the devil departed in confusion. The sinner repented, and grateful to his sorrowful mother, went to thank her, and presented a picture of this case, as an offering, at her altar in the new church of Santa Maria, in Perugia. ~ St. Alphonsus Liguori (Doctor of the Church)
MIRACLE 3:
The devils revealed to Francis Yepes, the brother of Saint John of the Cross, that three things especially tormented them. The first is the Holy Name of Jesus; the second, the Holy Name of Mary, and the third, the Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel. One time when his Brown Scapular fell off the devil exclaimed, "Take off that habit off," they cried to him, "which snatches so many souls from us. All those clothed in it die piously and escape us."
