Lemot Sediam Juste is the Darklord of the traveling Domain known as Scaena, which means “stage” in Latin. However, this failed playwright and has-been actor may have missed that obvious reference to his eternal prison.

A tall, skeletal-thin man with greasy black hair, Lemot was a renowned actor and writer of the stage known for his dramatic and comedic roles. As with many overinflated egotistic performers, this was not enough for him. He wanted to be known for all styles of writing and acting. Type casting was decidedly NOT for Lemot.

However, he could never portray tragedy without it coming across as melodramatic or unintentionally hilarious. His writing and direction was no better and he deceived himself into believing that it was entirely his troupe’s fault. They enjoyed heightening the comedic aspects of his plays and, to Lemot, they ruined his visions.

A rational man, Lemot decided to seek vengeance for this affront. He wrote a play with countless, horrific death scenes in which the bodies of each victim would lay on the stage for the entire production. The night of the play’s debut, Lemot replaced all of the prop weapons and poisons with real ones.

He joined the audience, watching gleefully as his troupe unknowingly killed one another on stage. It is odd that not a single actor noticed anything amiss that evening. No one, and surly not those that acted under Lemot’s direction, is that good of an actor.

Lemot’s play, which was just a bloody mess, ended with a chorus of boos from the audience. This infuriated the playwright who wanted nothing more than to bask in his revenge. Being the overdramatic has-been that he is, Lemot snuck outside and as the audience waited the final bow, he barred the doors of the playhouse and set it ablaze. Once the constabulary arrived to quell the fire and locate the cause of it, Lemot, in a rare moment of clarity, skulked away and hide in another theater. He fell asleep within and when he came to, he was alone and a thick Mist, in which he could not venture, surrounded the theater. Scaena is one of the smallest Domains in Ravenloft, made up of only a single theater. It can travel to any other Domain as well as any other plane of existence, typically forming over the location of an existing theater. A feat wasted on the showboat Darklord who does not realize where he is. Within Scaena, everything Lemot writes becomes reality upon the stage of the Scaena Theater. Because of this, he believes that every single being that appears on his stage is his creation and are only there to act out his visions. Despite Lemot being nothing more than a spindly writer forever unsatisfied with his creations, he is difficult to defeat. Those that wander onto his stage are forced to enact his visions without seeing Lemot writing behind the scenes, for he is engulfed in layers upon layers of illusions. In fact, Lemot can create an illusionary version of Scaena over the real, making his “creations” believe they are fighting him when they are not. The only limit to his creation is his own imagination, which makes him not only a powerful individual but an entirely annoying one to deal with. Like Lemot himself, many who visit his Domain find themselves constantly questioning reality.

In the “good” doctor’s latest guide, Lemot is now Lemont and instead of replacing the props in his play, he joined the stage after his audience grew bored and demanded blood and gore, which he delivered by brutally murdering the entire cast before their eyes. Here, Scaena was once part of Dementlieu and became its own Domain after Lemont’s bloody debut. It does not appear that this new version of Scaena has the ability to travel through planes of existence.

I love soundtracks and OSTs. Toby Fox was my fourth most listened Spotify artist this year, and I wholeheartedly believe that if Killua Zoldyck was a music, he'd be "Waterfall" from the Undertale OST. I listen to it a lot, and the thought of him comes organically to my mind everytime. I don't even like Killua that much, the music just sounds like him. It's layered the way I'd layer him, one step at a time, and it comes back full circle.

If I ever were to be asked one day to pick my favorite anime soundtrack without any time to think my answer through, I'd probably say it's 2011 Hunter x Hunter's. It's inherently good. It does some really good things when establishing the ambience, principally when it comes to the Zoldyck family theme ("Ansatsu Ikka no Yakata"), Leorio's theme ("All I Need Is MONEY!", hilariously fitting name by the way) and all of the background musics for the hunter exam arc in specific that are so spot on with the mood, and made me fall in love with the show. That and the amazing, showstopping, iconic "HUNTING FOR YOUR DREAMS", peak soundtrack, in my (and everyone else's) opinion. Most of the tracks from the Hunter x Hunter soundtrack though, really, I only like because they've grown on me, and not because I loved them from the get go. That's why it's not my favorite soundtrack.

I know that's a stupid argument, but hear me out;

My favorite album of all times, Portals by Melanie Martinez, I hated upon first listening to, because I was so used to her first three releases. It took me time to learn and appreciate it. It took me listening to it over and over again, imagining performances, learning to anticipate the beats. I didn't mind that process of discovery at all, in fact, it only made it better for me. In the same way, I haven't disliked listening to the Hunter x Hunter soundtrack as I get work done and coming across musics that I don't like that much.

While enjoying the show, though, I feel like it's sort of essential for the music to do it's magic immediately upon first watching. That's when I'll be discovering it, that's when I need for the atmosphere to captivate me, and there's nothing like good music to keep my attention on something. That's what the hunter exam themed musics did to me, and that's what had twelve year old me rushing out of bed all giddy at six in the morning to watch an episode or two before school. But the rest of the musics from the show lacked of that feel. Even those that were kept from the first season didn't feel as good afterwards, since they were so proper and attached to the first arc.

That said, I think there's only one anime soundtrack that ever pleased me right off the bat, and it's Puella Magi Madoka Magica's. Insane music. Everytime I hear "Sis puella magica!" I envision Homura, the witch mazes. I think Mami, I think Bebe, and I think this is so undoubtedly Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and it's why, despite not having any of my favorite anime characters, it's still my favorite anime. "Scaena felix" and "Postmeredie" make me nostalgic, like I was there with Madoka in that kitchen in episode one. And when I listen to the soundtrack, I have to stop any activity that requires reflection because even the most unassuming songs in there speak to me, bring me back to scenes and themes and feelings, and I can't focus in those conditions.

I've watched Hunter x Hunter many more times than I have PMMM, and I discovered it a long while before too, yet there a lot of musics on its soundtrack that are (IN MY OPINION) just so boring and, quite frankly, eh, so I don't remember them upon encounter. They do not elicit any sort of reaction out of me, and most likely never will. If they do, they'll relate to my personal life rather than the show, which is not what I'm looking for.

One thing that the Puella Magi Madoka Magica soundtrack does better than the Hunter x Hunter one in my opinion is the whole 'pretending this is a cute show and then breaking your heart' thing. Hunter x Hunter had more time to get those characters into your heart, so of course the impact was much more violent, but the music to go with it, in my humble opinion (please don't murder me), was kind of mid.

To be kept in mind is that, while in some aspects, its length was a disadvantage, Puella Magi Madoka Magica only has one season (twelve episodes, I believe), a movie, and a second one coming our way. They had it easy in terms of arcs in comparison to Hunter x Hunter, they didn't need to make as many songs with as many different atmospheres.

But overall, I think it's songs like "Signum Malum" that make Puella Magi Madoka Magica's soundtrack so special to me. The reusing of a now familiar melody with a fully different vibe and intent to fit the new narrative. Masterpieces, I'm telling you. Sort of links with the happy show facade that I was on about earlier.

Bonus points to PMMM because the cover for the soundtrack is a picture of our two lesbian queens, one so sentimental and heart shattering if you've watched the Rebellion movie.

All in good faith, though. And in no way is this meant to shame people who like the Hunter x Hunter soundtrack, obviously so do I. Everybody does. It's just a random opinion I thought would be fun to share, and I'd love to hear yours back of course.

Random thought: I really want someone to put out the My Deer Friend Nokotan background OST tracks online.

Like beyond the memeable ones (the ‘battle theme’ and the angelic ‘shikaaaaa’ 👼 choir), the general piano and symphonic OSTs would be *fantastic* as comic dub music or, like, YouTube shorts background music.

That gentle piano/strings track that usually plays at the start of an episode while we focus in on Koshitan is honestly especially fantastic. It reminds me of the tracks ‘Postmeridie’ or ‘Scaena Felix’ from the Madoka OST.

How well do you think 'The King Of Broadway' written by Mel Blanc for The Producers works as a theme song for Lemot Sediam Juste?

Figured it was easier to answer this one than the corrected version (Mel Brooks as the writer). I would say the song works reasonably well for Lemot. He is, after all, a playwright/actor who, upon attempting to branch out, failed to the point of ridicule and the song is about former glory in the theatre.

Considering Me Too revealed a lot of horrible skeletons in Hollywood, I’m surprised that Scaena didn’t get revamped into a Gothic Horror Version of Tinsel Town. Heck, have the Darklord be a theater producer cursed to have people never know his true identity, while people like Lemot Sediam Juste arrogantly proclaim that they’re the ruler of the domain. His other torments would be productions that go off the rails, independent theater productions that he can’t stamp out and whistleblowers who reveal the sordid underbelly of Scaena.
