SBIFF 2022: Loren & Rose
Russell Brown’s Loren & Rose is a film that shocked and surprised me in terms of its authentic feel and effectiveness bred from such a simple concept. A director and a legendary actress have a full meal together over the course of six years—an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert.

Prestigious SBIFF awards go to Bassett and Curtis
(News4usonline) - The 38th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) wrapped with some of the biggest names in the film industry being honored. Among those receiving accolades were Angela Bassett and Jamie Lee Curtis, two of Hollywood’s longtime leading ladies. Curtis is well-known for her screams. Bassett has drawn on her unmistakable grit and perseverance for the characters she portrays. Both women have been longtime beacons of light in the film industry. Bassett, who starred in the hit film, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” picked up the SBIFF Montecito Award, which was hand-delivered by film director Ryan Coogler on Feb. 9.

(Photo by Tibrina Hobson/Getty Images for SBIFF) “Ms. Bassett has had an illustrious career as an actor, director and producer and in WAKANDA FOREVER reminds us why she's so greatly revered. She's regal, fierce and commanding as Queen Ramonda. We bow down.” SBIFF’s Executive Director Roger Durling stated. Coogler was the director of “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Before she was presented with the Montecito Award, Bassett did a Q&A with Durling as her clips from her greatest hits of films were shown to the audience. Among the more notable roles and films Bassett has played in her illustrious career was starring in “Malcolm X,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” Boyz in the Hood,” and “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” Bassett was considered to the frontrunner to win an Acadamy Award for her blistering portrayal of singer Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” The Oscar didn’t materialize for Bassett, who is up for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress as Queen Romonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Curtis, considered to be Hollywood’s scream queen for ongoing roles in horror flicks like the “Halloween” saga, was given the Maltin Modern Master Award. The daughter of Hollywood legends Tony Curtis (Some Like it Hot) and Janet Leigh (Psycho), Curtis is an extremely talented actress in her own right, having earned a Golden Globe Award and enjoying several other nominations along her acting journey. But when you mention the name Jamie Lee Curtis, another name pops up immediately: Laurie Strode. Strode is the older sister of Michael Myers. Ever since 1978 when the first “Halloween” chiller first appeared, Myers has been chasing big sister around with a maniacal thirst as a killing machine leading bodies in his wake. And all the way up to the 2022 “Halloween Ends,” Curtis screams her head off. There’s nothing quite like a Jamie Lee Curtis scream, that’s for sure. In all fairness, there’s a lot more to Curtis as an actress than running around dark neighborhoods trying to avoid being the victim of her brother’s homicidal aspirations. She has starred in “Trading Places,” “The Fog,” “A Fish Called Wanda,” “True Lies,” and “Blue Steel.” According to her IMDB, Curtis has 80 film credits under her name. She’s also an accomplished director and producer. Her career is a little more than having a screamfest. “Jamie Lee Curtis has long since proven that she has staying power. People want to watch her, whether it’s in a Halloween movie or an offbeat character role. She’s talented and charismatic, and in the process does her movie-star parents proud” said Leonard Maltin. I can’t keep up with all this glorious new Benedict content, from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. What a wonderful gift! After this, after seeing all the love in the room, and the humor and easy friendship and admiration, and the Man himself be so wonderfully relaxed and happy and clearly smitten with the love of his life, who gives a good goddamn about the Oscars. No one there is going to know his work as those in attendance at SBIFF obviously do. No one there is going to love him for all the multitude of reasons that his family, friends, those he has worked with and yes, we very ardent fans do. This night was clearly a joy for him to experience, and simply a joy for those of us who appreciate him.
All I ask is that someone please do remind me I wrote this come March 28, so I won’t give into the sour grapes that may be my default state when the far less worthy Actor takes the prize.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter at the 37th Santa Barbara International Film Festival → March 9 2022
"I can't do this job without my wife Sophie, my best friend. She's the real pole constantly pushing me. We don't usually use that metaphor, sorry. But, seriously, what you've given me as a friend, as a lover, as mother of our beautiful, beautiful boys, as a partner in crime on this creative journey that we're both taking, you as a director, me as an actor, it's just beyond words. I can't thank you enough for being here tonight as you are always at these moments, to support me. I love you so, so much." - Benedict Cumberbatch to Sophie Hunter when he received his SBIFF Cinema Vanguard Award

I second this, I just finished watching and it was a GREAT q&a!

This interview is everything. I LOVE BAZ. Every interview I find him more brilliant. If that's even possible. The way he invests himself in a project and brings out the best in everybody. And how they all collaborated so amazingly.
Also LOVE their short teasing abt them in lockdown. Gatsby the 2nd and Zelda 😂😂😂🍸🍹 how they are able to laugh about themselves. And Austin sitting there laughing his ass off abt their comments and in the next second talking about all this serious, heartbreaking stuff. I could have listened for another hour. The questions were also well selected and I am grateful that they weren't interrupted but allowed to merrily ramble on for ages 😍😂

19 Jul, 2022
Happy Birthday, Benedict Cumberbatch.
I hope now you are sleeping soundly in your bed, at your cool home in London (you must have an air conditioning lol) with your beautiful wife and your three cute gorgeous little boys. Perhaps when you wake up in the morning, you’ll firstly be greeted by a huge warm hug from Sophie. Then your naughty boys will throw themselves on you, shouting “happy birthday daddy”, expressing their love and kissing you in your face. Perhaps your inbox will be bursting with kind regards from friends and work. Perhaps you’ll hold a little birthday party with your family and your closest friends. This is your day. You should enjoy it and you deserve to be happy.
I didn’t know you for long, only half a year and I deeply regret I didn’t know you earlier. I remembered it was 30 Dec, 2021. I just finished my finals and wanted to find something to entertain myself. Then Sherlock hit my mind, partly due to its short length (4 seasons and 12 episodes) but also because I’ve already known it’s famous. But it turned out the time for watching the whole series stretched out my whole winter holiday. I confess I didn’t totally fall in love with it until s2e1, the last twist where Sherlock saved The Woman. I watched slowly and repeatedly, estimating the plot and poring on what I’ve watched, what made them do this, why they would do this and their feeling in that scenario, to which I applied to TPOTD and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain as well during that time, the former deeply blowing my mind and the latter making me cry for three times. I’m still a beginner and there’s a lot to catch up with.
The fandom is wonderful and I meet a lot of lovely friends, domestically and overseas. I watched SAG live while I was having an online class. I watched you getting your own star at Hollywood’s Star Walk, of which I felt so proud. On SBIFF you reviewed your career. On BAFTA me and fans shitted about how cruel they treated you. The whole award season concluded with Oscar, fruitful in a way although no big awards in bag. You deserve much better. I am happy getting involved, discussing characters and my understanding with someone who shares similar tastes with me. Our opinions may vary but we debate them harmoniously. That’s the point.
I always contemplate the meaning of icons. Improving my English (judging from my poor writing it’s obvious that en is not my first language) and encouraging me when I’m stranded are sort of excuses I would have used to justify myself when I was 15 or younger. Now I think it’s more like a small distraction from the dull, boring, stressful reality I’m currently in. In the movies or shows I experience different lives that I have no chance to experience in real life. I chatted with other fans about my views of characters because I enjoy digging into them. I read fan fictions if I’m really interested. Distraction, in my limited experience, is a good thing for me, in which I gain happiness, aliveness and relaxation.
I’m really grateful for knowing you. I will not say I’ll love you forever because I’m not sure whether that’s true myself. But I’ll say with absolute certainty that I’ll cherish your extraordinary works and every moment of the happiness this amazing fandom brings me.
Lots of love and happy everyday

Remember… and now we know. A second batch of Forget Me Not gin is in production, and proceeds from the first batch did support Glasgow artists.
Do the math, people. She delivered in 2021. She “fell pregnant” in 2020. She promoted FMN Gin until late 2020.

Directors Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) receive their "Outstanding Director of the Year" Awards at the 37th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival → March 03 2022
The SBIFF panel host and executive director bring up Branagh's recent film Death on the Nile and tease him about Agatha Christie's most famous novel and the world's best-selling mystery, And Then There Were None, as a possible project Branagh could tackle next. :)
In said novel, 10 strangers are invited to an isolated island by a host who is mysteriously absent when the group arrives. Each is accused of a terrible crime, and when one of the party dies, the survivors realise the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again and again till none are left.
The other three directors to receive SBIFF's Outstanding Director of the Year Award are Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) and Steven Spielberg (West Side Story).
