Out of context this exchange feels very poignant and powerful. Like two or more people on a grand adventure and one of them still has faith in divine power despite the horrors and atrocities they have seen. While one person expresses faith in a creator, a stage-setter, an ethereal director of the stage of life, another expresses faith in themselves, in the power of the mundane human in a world where no one out there or above you is looking out for you. Maybe this person once believed someone was up there keeping them safe but over time that belief was whittled away by the throws of life until they felt despair at the apparent betrayal of their creator before they settle on the idea that no one was ever there. Or, even more haunting, that someone was once up there watching but is no longer. To this person, the universe doesn’t care about you, but the people around you do. Despite everything, they want to believe in themselves and the people around them; they want to believe that they can make it through anything if they stick together and have faith in their abilities. Maybe a god doesn’t exist in their world, but they do, and at the end of the day, that’s enough because they have to believe in something.
