Mana
The song that sealed the deal for me. When I saw #SB19 perform this on the Wish Bus, I was FLOORED.
While I was anticipating the lyricism and heavenly harmonies I have come to expect from the group, it was the song’s sonic cornucopia that first captured my attention. That hard, angry intro by Ken followed by Pablo’s gritty vocals had me glued to my seat.
It may just be aural hallucinations , but the song reminds me of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The beat changes, the theatrical flourishes, the almost operatic runs, the rap lines and, of course, the maniacal laughter mixed into the track evoke pieces from a dark musical, or a rock opera.
I saw a reaction video on YT where the reactor stopped the song mid-track to comment about how the song is fun even if it’s repetitive and doesn’t have much chord progression. The point where he resumed listening was when the beat suddenly dropped and Ken bellowed in his menacing underworld voice, “Aswang ba kaya kinatatakutan…” , only to be later contrasted by Stell’s long, piercing high note. Oh, how delicious it was to see the reactor practically throw his hands up in surrender as he backtracked on his comment.
That there has already been much discourse on the song’s lyrics is a testament to its artistic value. It is a song that uses a mythical creature from Philippine folklore to convey that one may soar high but still keep one’s feet firmly on the ground. At the same time, it’s a clapback to the non-believers and naysayers who doubted the group’s talent and tenacity.
It may only be me, but another thing that made a deep impression is the fact that this has no music video. If there’s any song that could inspire a myriad of ideas for an MV, it’s this. I guess SB19 was concerned that adding visuals to the already insane production of the song might cause the viewers sensory overload.
Yes, this unhinged, masterful composition is from a PPop “boy group”. You heard that right. A BOY GROUP. Search it on YT and thank me later.

How P-pop Have Reinvented Itself through K-pop
Sing, dance, rap—these are the core elements of pop groups. Although the concept is not new, it has been popularized by South Korea over the years. As a result, other countries followed suit and created a group of their own, infusing their language and culture, such as the Philippines with their own P-pop or Pinoy pop. Although P-pop has a long history, the current generation of P-pop uses the K-pop system as its foundation, which raises a question on the identity of P-pop. The introduction of P-pop in the masses received mixed reactions from the Filipinos, especially Filipino K-pop fans, for its attempt to replicate the look and sound of K-pop. Public figures, such as Imelda Schweighar and Janus Del Prado, criticized the attempt highlighting that they are losing their identity trying to be Koreans. As a pioneering P-pop group, SB19 is a testament on how some Filipinos prove their perspectives by setting them as an example of a K-pop group copy. This, in turn, shows an opposite image of P-pop to the Filipino people.
P-pop drew origins from K-pop as can be observed on their training, fashion, and music styles; however, tracing back its history, it has long existed even before K-pop began. Moreover, K-pop itself is influenced by Japanese pop and western music, making it a hybrid musical tradition. This emphasizes that music evolves overtime with the influence of music itself and other various factors, such as social and cultural factors.
Although P-pop is closely similar to K-pop, it is not truly replicating K-pop and the success of it. For instance, Alamat. They use the K-pop system, but they also consistently display the rich culture of the Philippines through their fashion that sometimes include indigenous outfits, and music that sometimes uses multiple languages to make a difference. There is also SB19 that started with K-pop influences but uses it as a foundation to reinvent Filipino pop music as they grow and infuse more their Filipino roots. This exemplifies that K-pop serves only as a reference for P-pop to thrive in the scene where K-pop dominates, which catalyzes for it to evolve. Furthermore, the indulgence of Filipino music labels and Filipino companies to P-pop might come as a strategy and way to introduce a niche of music to possibly entice Filipinos of the same music interests to gradually lean back to listening more Filipino music.
P-pop is still in its infancy stage to date. For Filipinos who are unaccustomed to this kind of music and for Filipino K-pop fans who are more into K-pop music, P-pop will sound more as novelty, and it will take a long time for Filipinos to accept P-pop as a now becoming part of the Filipino music culture. Longevity of music relies not just on the support it is receiving but also on its uniqueness as a music; hence, reinvention must be made for P-pop to look and sound more authentically Filipino.
Indeed P-pop drew inspiration from K-pop; however, this does not necessarily make P-pop a copy of K-pop. Music is influenced by the world and through time, they evolve to a music that is unique on its own, and P-pop is just one of that music that transcends to become a music that embodies a pop distinct to Filipinos.

Fangirling
I’m relatively new to stanning. I’ve been a fan of a number of celebrities, yes, but a proper stan? No. This is quite new to me.
I was vaguely aware of this “phenomenon”, after all, I don’t live under a rock. I had heard of Army, Swifties, Blinks, VIPs, Stays, etc. and the lengths that they will go to support their idols.
Then came #SB19. I didn’t even realize I was becoming a stan: all I know is I found myself slowly abandoning my routines to voraciously consume YT contents of the boys: MVs, concert footages, Wish Bus performances, and of course, their vlogs. I lost sleep scouring channels for reaction videos, holding my breath in anticipation of how the reactors’ jaws will drop in sync with mine, gobsmacked by the boys’ performances. It’s particularly satisfying to see the reactors themselves become fans of the boys, which, trust me, has happened a lot.
Hungry for more, I created fan accounts on X and IG, and even joined TikTok, in which I was never interested. Add Reddit and Tumblr to the list. I joined GDMs with total strangers, to be updated on the boys’ activities and get tea on what’s happening in the fandom as well. This is so out of character for me, an introvert contented with a small circle of friends.
I got involved in fan voting, something I would typically sneer at. I voted in Nylon, SEC, and the big two, Nickelodeon and BBFA. Went through some 30 plus artists in Nickelodeon I don’t know how many times. Sacrificed sleep and even personal hygiene 😬 while cursing the WiFi connection gods and the BBFA site trying to get my votes counted.
When the call to arms for streaming came, I answered. Regularly streamed, switched playlists, platforms and devices, heeding the recommendations of the streaming experts. I’m still doing it.
And for the first time in years, I stepped inside a movie theatre just to watch something I rarely even watch on Netflix- a documentary. ALONE.
Oh, did I mention that I’ve included them, who are totally oblivious of my existence, in my daily prayers, petitioning God to grant them whatever they desire and deserve?
All these “firsts” for a group that I only discovered 6 months ago, who I’ve never even seen live in concert! (I did livestream the Pagtatag finale on both days, but that doesn’t count, does it?)
I know that these are not, by any means, even half of what a real stan can do for the boys. I do want, no, I need to do more. And I’m sure I will, because they give me JOY . Note that I don’t use that word lightly.
In the meantime, I will continue to devour their contents on YT, stream their music, make noise for them on social media, vote when my vote is needed, and pray incessantly for these very worthy men. If this is what stanning is, then I’m a proud stan of SB19.

A Silent Fan Gone Wild (My SB19 Escapades)
I just finished binged watching While You Were Sleeping, a Korean series. While I enjoyed it, it was the sound track that made an impact to me so I immediately went to browse YouTube for the series’ OST. While on it, one of the recommendations was a music video with thumbnail that shows Korean-looking couple but what intrigued me is that the title of the song is in Tagalog (Filipino) called Tilaluha. I thought maybe it is a cover but made into a Filipino version so I checked it out. That fated day on November 8, 2018,  was the start of my SB19 fangirling journey.
My reaction, at the time, to Tilaluha was a confusion itself. I’m seeing Korean actors talking in Korean but the song playing in the background is Tagalog. But it was only for the first couple of seconds and my attention soon shifted to the song. Honestly, didn’t even watch the music video anymore but just listened to the music. It was eargasmic. The melody, the harmony, and the feels was just so good I can’t believe I just heard it just now. Still in disbelief that I missed this song, went immediately to the credits and checked. It was an introduction of the artist SB19. Apparently, the video was just released two days ago. Unfamiliar, I went on to search about SB19, not much to know about it aside from its company, ShowBT Entertainment, that it is a Filipino five-member male group who trained under a Korean System. My search didn’t stop there because my thoughts after googling them was, we have such very efficient boy group who can actually sing very well but we are promoting mainstream produced boy groups branded as singers selling albums but cannot even do a decent live performance. I was actually hoping that the group I just listened to already debuted mainstream but only to my dismay.
From thereon, I was a fan. Would discuss the song and the artist to my friends and officemates. They were polite enough to listen but were not really interested to get to know them more. That disinterest only made me more obsessed. Researching about SB19 didn’t give me much because of the very few resources and references but I was already tracking them with their Facebook page and YouTube page. My fangirl heart was in awe when they finally released Go Up but secretly hoping for them to release Love Goes too. Sadly, it didn’t rake well just like Tilaluha. Didn’t mind, I’m still happy that we have a Filipino group who can actually sing and dance efficiently, quite a rarity in the Philippine music industry. You have to know that I have never fangirled, not even for Taylor Swift (yes I’m a hard core Swiftie too), to blatantly put it, I was a silent fan.
September 2, 2019, when a KPOP fan tweeted about SB19′s dance practice of Go Up, everything went haywire when it got viral and SB19 was an instant sensation. I was so happy that they are already being recognized but it was also a rolling uphill battle. Filipinos are not very receptive of PPOP (not even a thing at the time) as we were very accustomed to the stereotypical Filipino artist. I will expound more on this later, and even extensively perhaps in the next articles.
While I converted my personal account into an SB19 promotional blog, this is also a documentation of why I decided to become an engaging fan. So while I aim to introduce SB19 to the world, I’m also sharing my journey as a fan girl. Let me just explain this briefly. There was a time when part of the promotional marketing of SB19 was to perform in schools in order for them to be introduced to college students, a demographic that is very receptive and active in the music and concert scene in the Philippines. It was during the PUP School Attack program that I finally decided to become an active fan. Why so? During that performance, Stell got injured but he nevertheless ignored it and continued performing. If it were not for Teacher Hong noticing and Tatang Robin pulling him out, he would have endured the pain and finish the performance dancing, nevertheless, he still belted and sang his part on the sideline. The members who were clearly worried just continued performing and gave the audience the performance they deserved. Since the show must go on, the group went on even if Pablo (who goes by Sejun back then) had to carry Stell and seated him center stage. That my friends, A’TIN, is what you call professionalism. When I got to watch a fan cam footage of that incident the night of that performance it sealed the deal. It made me very determined to support this group no matter what, hence, the onset of my fangirling journey.
But isn’t it late to do blogs now that there are already too many videos, write ups and references about SB19? Some may think so, but I have my reasons. I cannot do YouTube contents since I don’t have the time and resources, let’s leave that to the experts. I can’t do twitter either since I’m no fun in there. Let the big fanbases take charge of that. But Tumblr, this I could do since I can just freely write what I think in a page where I can control content and engagement. It is less anarchic here. Furthermore, this is one of the things I learned from Taylor Swift, how to promote her craft to her legion of supporters who are so in touch with her in this platform. I would like to take inspiration from that and perhaps introduced SB19 to the world and at least inch a little closer to the world domination we seek to attain. I hope and pray that non-locals (non-Filipino) music enthusiasts will soon become fans and welcome SB19 in their horizon. This is what I seek to achieve in my own small ways.
So if you are A’TIN or a casual music lover who is interested to get to know more about SB19, please share this content, follow this account and spread word to your family and friends. In the days to come, I will try my best to publish as many SB19 related contents as  much as I can and as frequent as I can manage. However, please bear with me as I fact check details before publishing them and even ask for consent for materials to be used or cited. I hope this will be the beginning of your journey too.
P.S. More than promoting SB19, my fangirling is actually self serving. There is so much parallelism between SB19′s journey and my personal endeavors that made me identify with them. This I would like to share, maybe, in the not so distant future. For now, let’s focus on SB19 matters first.

Hi Ana! Idk if you've heard about this drama but for the past week armys have been "fighting" the fandom of this P-pop group because they were talking their record on this chart lol but the P-pop fandom just to be on top so more people could find out about this song (worked for me bc found out about them bc of an article about them being #1 for 5 weeks) while armys had this mindset of always wanting to see bts on top and compete. So last week was madness bc both fandoms were trying hard for their faves (which is amazing but ofc some armys were being vile towards the group and it's fandom for being some "nobodies" "no one knows this song", etc ..) and tbh well all thought butter would actually take this week's #1 spot ,but yesterday chart data announced Bazinga had broken the record and you can only imagine what happened..., SB19's fandom were even scared to celebrate and politely asked eo wait for billboard's confirmation and now here it Is! But what is interesting Is seeing the difference on both fandoms reactions and attitude, while armys is "threatening" Billboard saying "so this is how you want to play? Lets play" , SB19's fandom is thanking billboard for allowing this type of chart that allowed their group to be more heard, and you can see more reactions and the quotes and replies.
https://twitter.com/chartdata/status/1485801492892327938?t=i7c8mzFlzrW3j-vL79CSKQ&s=19
Anyway ! Sb19 do have amazing music and im glad i found then through this chart!
hey! i did get a message about this, honestly i've been neglecting my askbox too much so i apologize for that. this is probably a little old news by now but oh well....
Tumblr media
gotta be honest w you, i had seen some media reports abt how the boyband craziness has taken over the philippines for a while now - they've had a similar system to kpop for years now and since it's a pretty insular community (the philippines music market is really competitive and filipinos listen to more music on average than most western countries) this was no surprise to me at first. but seeing this is actually really surprising!! this means that they're breaking the geographical boundaries in a very similar pattern to kpop, with dedicated fandoms and social media strategies.
i personally had never listened of sb19 but seeing this apparently my own cousin is a fan?? lmfao. i'll have to check this song out now...
Tumblr media
this is literally just the cherry on top. as you mentioned the difference between both fandoms is fucking astounding, and it'd be hilarious if it wasn't for all the blatant racism that armys are exhibiting bc of a fucking twitter chart 😭😭😭😭 just bc of that i'm gonna give sb19 some promo. i even turned off my adblocker lmfao
youtube
congratulations to sb19!!! i hope their fans get to enjoy this without letting armys sour the win for yall
