didn't like melancholia at all. :/ its strongest point by far is the artwork. it had a couple of good jokes but i'm like really struggling to think of even one thing i liked about it. its edgy veneer is something that might strike a chord with middle schoolers but taken as a whole, melancholia's "depth" was superficial at best. might give something else by dowman a shot in the future but overall i'm not really impressed by his storytelling.

i keep seeing people refer to sayman dowman as a manga genius. i'm reading melancholia currently which is the first work i've ever seen of his and i have to say that i'm not very impressed so far. the quality of the art is its strongest point, his style reminds me a lot of the character designs in professor layton. the backgrounds aren't very detailed but still give a strong sense of space & form. the stories themselves are... mid at best. they're (for the most part so far) interesting little concepts that don't really get much room to breathe before the next vignette starts. supposedly (according to reviews) they're connected by an overarching theme that really pulls the whole thing together into something wonderful, but i don't see where it's going yet and i'm about a quarter of the way through. i'm really hoping this turns around soon because the strongest i've felt about it at all was a deep discomfort during the second vignette, which seems to be just softcore shota? i seriously don't know what other people see in this so far.
