Today (October 12, 2022) I learn that gold is trading in London and New York at $53.64 per gramme, so that one ducat would be worth about $188 in terms of today’s bullion value, although ducats as collectors’ items are now worth much more than that—a mid-sixteenth-century Venetian ducat is currently being offered for sale on e-bay for $560. But using today’s gold price as a way of roughly calculating equivalent value, then Maurice Abbot’s cargo on Phoenix in 1623 was worth around $3,300 in today’s money—a relatively small sum. But the sum which Antonio borrows from Shylock against his bond in The Merchant of Venice is (in today’s money) around $560,000, while Shylock turns down the modern equivalent of well over a $1,000,000, in preference for a pound of Antonio’s flesh.

Why You Should Consider Setting Up An Eco-Retreat
Are you looking to generate revenue from your land or wish to restructure your existing rural leisure business? Do you have a beautiful, natural location rich in trees, wildlife and biodiversity to offer to discerning guests wishing to escape city living and connect to the environment?
If so, you should really be thinking about joining the pioneers of the eco-tourism industry which is beginning to emerge as a likely forerunner in the leisure sector over the next decade and we’ll show you why.
There are some key trends that are worth looking into before jumping into a new venture, we’ll explain which are the ones we think show true promise and why.
TOURISM
The Leisure industry is one of the fastest-growing industries. One of the contributory factors could be the rise in the ‘staycation’ holiday market which really started picking up some steam - the Glamping industry (think cabins, tree-houses, upcycled Gypsy Caravans and exquisitely crafted luxury tents and you’re on the money).
You don’t need to spend too much time analysing market reports to see what’s happening, for this trend is exemplified by the popularity of British Television programmes such as “George Clarkes Amazing Spaces” and the emergence of uber-fashionable and super successful UK Glamping Travel Agencies such as Alistair Sawday’s “Canopy and Stars” and Tim Rees “Quality Unearthed” at the forefront of the trend. (And it’s not a trend, by the way, our sources indicate that this is most definitely a growth curve which looks set to continue).
A large percentage of people are now trading in their traditional 2-week vacation abroad in favour of several long weekend breaks and mini-breaks to work around their careers/businesses and families.
Oliver Smith, digital travel editor of the Telegraph writes:
“Travelodge now claims that, despite recent poor weather, holidays at home are back in demand.  Its annual holiday report, which featured a survey of 3,000 adults, revealed that 65 per cent of people would be taking a summer holiday in Britain that year – up from 41 per cent the previous year, and 35 per cent in 2011.”
Everyone is looking to cash in on the 'boutique' escape boom at the moment
The sheer diversity of overnight accommodation units now being utilised by farmers and landowners to generate a return is quite staggering. The most desirable are safari tents, cabin tents, eco tents, treehouses, yurts, eco-pods, bell-tents, Ti-Pi’s, gypsy caravans, timber-framed luxury cabins and modular garden buildings, and other luxury tents and glamping structures. It makes sense to select the type of building which best suits your business and client base.
If you had a beautiful paddock, for example, and a budget of R100,000.00 for your capital investment it would be worth considering a tent or a Ti-Pi for an authentic glamping retreat. Conversely, a landowner of a country estate with a 4* hotel wishing to expand on their current offering may be more inclined to budget ten times this amount for an exclusive lodge, treehouse or Roundhouse.
ECO-TOURISM
This leads us to the Eco-Tourism industry, cited to be the fastest growing sector within the rapidly expanding tourism industry.   A common driver in the Glamping and Outdoor Experience Staycation holiday theme is the pre-requisite for a beautiful, natural rural location in which guests can unwind, recharge and immerse themselves in nature.
Tom Dixon, managing director of Sawday’s Canopy & Stars says: ‘In general, travellers are starting to look for more experiential holidays. They want to try something different, something that’s a million miles from what they do in normal life. People really do enjoy getting back to nature and a more relaxed kind of holiday, but we all like a bit of comfort too.”
Ecotourism is now defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education” (TIES, 2015). Education is meant to be inclusive of both staff and guests.
Ecotourism has become one of the fastest-growing sectors of the tourism industry, growing annually by 10–15% worldwide (Miller, 2007).
Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel.
With environmental conservation being a highly emotive area for a large percentage of the population, there are many of us who choose to travel on our holidays with a primary objective in mind; to engage in volunteering on a wildlife conservation project. Creating a memorable experience whilst learning is a satisfying adventure and there are some wonderful organisations and charities operating within the tourism industry that organise trips and adventures to enable the environmentally driven holidaymaker to gain experience in the fields of permaculture, bushcraft, organic farming, forestry practices, wildlife conservation and marine biology to name but a few.
One of the best examples of a non-profit organisation operating in the field of international eco-tourism is Ecoteer Responsible Travel, founded in 2005 by Daniel Quilter, a marine biologist, after a volunteering experience at Sukau in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Ecoteer Responsible Travel was formed to help concentrate resources to develop meaningful volunteer and ecotourism experiences which could help solve the specific issues for each project.
As Daniel states on his website “Ecoteer.com benefited from the UK recession as more people had free time and were looking for low-cost long term projects and is now a favourite amongst students and career breakers looking for work experience in the ecotourism, environmental awareness and conservation sectors. The Ecoteer.com website supports over 200 independently-run grass-root organisations in over 50 countries and by 2011 Ecoteer had over 1,500 subscribing members.”
And it would appear that the ecotourism trend is establishing itself within the UK tourism industry.
‘Green Traveller” which lists over 700 green places to stay was founded in 2006 by travel journalist Richard Hammond, the former ecotourism journalist for The Guardian and author of “Clean Breaks – 500 New Ways to see the world”. The site is a fantastic resource which features eco-friendly places to stay and holidays which can be conveniently reached by bike, public transport, train or ferry.
They also try to link these up with a range of things to do in the local area, including Local Food & Drink, Farmers’ Markets, Family Days Out, Festivals, Museums, Gardens, Arts and Craft, Walks, Cycle Rides and Watersports, Wildlife Watching and more.
When we phoned GreenTraveller to quiz Richard about his perspective of this industry he stated: “We’ve seen a definite increase in not only the number of sites advertising with us but in the interest in this style of holiday. There are not only more environmentally friendly places to stay in the UK but the number of initiatives which the proprietors are installing is also on the increase, a primary example of this is the installation of green technology. Many are upgrading facilities which place an emphasis on maximising the efficiency of their energy, assist with the minimisation of waste alongside the implementation of alternative water systems.”
This information alone, combined with the plethora of information available in the media and via independent sources is indicating to us that there is a real promise to be found if you can offer the following to your prospective guests:
Authenticity
Clean, fresh air, organic & locally grown produce\
An unspoilt, natural location (preferably with water)
An experience which connects them with their inner nature (or inner child ie: men=treehouses!)
A valuable learning experience, whether this is learning about the local farmers market or learning how to rely on green technology (or zero technology!)
An opportunity to make unique memories
It shouldn’t be too difficult for you to start drafting up the pros of an eco-retreat in your business plan for the future, and gaining planning permission could be more achievable if you were considerate of both conservation and an opportunity to boost the local economy.
Of course, it would be highly advisable to ensure your overnight accommodation buildings (or structures) are quirky, memorable and built to provide a level of comfort which correlates to the return you’d like to generate back on your investment.

Grue Believer Celebration Shenanigans continues with this review of Countess Dracula (1971), selected by special guest host and Decades of Horror fan Gregory Crosby. In this episode, the Grue Crew tackles another Hammer film from the Seventies featuring the stunning and talented Ingrid Pitt in the title role. While the film has no fangs and has little to do with Dracula, it borrows heavily from the legends of Countess Bathory who is said to have bathed in the blood of virgins to restore her youth. Countess Dracula is far more serious and mature than many of Hammer’s offerings throughout the decade and is well worth a revisit. Check out the Grue-Crew discussion to discover why.
At the time of this writing, Countess Dracula is available to stream from Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV Channel, Shudder, AMC+, and Tubi. The film is available on physical media in Blu-ray format from Synapse Films.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by guest host Dirk Rogers, will be Trog (1970). Directed by Freddie Francis; produced by Herman Cohen; written by Aben Kandel; starring Joan Crawford & Michael Gough; and with dinosaur scenes by Willis H. O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen? It’s gotta be great, right? Right?

I always know when the “Concerning Juliet’s Age” post starts going around again because I get a significant uptick in messages saying I should have been a teacher. While I’m deeply flattered that you think me capable of such a feat, I assure you, I’m not.
I’m just a nerd who’s been hyperfixated on Shakespeare for some 20-odd years who also dropped out of my teaching degree after I realized I don’t like being around kids and was only going into teaching because it’s what everyone told me I should do with my English literature and linguistics degree.
Everyone except my Revolutionary studies professor who, when he asked what I would do after graduation, sucked air through his teeth and said, “Teaching? Really? God no darling, what a waste of talent. You should be a writer.”
So shout out to professor Sawday for encouraging me to follow my true passion. ✌️
I doubt you envisioned I’d be writing queer monsterfucking romances rife with political and social commentary and dick jokes, but then again, you seemed to know me better than I knew myself, so maybe you did

relax and unwind in the sussex countryside
The Dairy at Streat Place Barn is tucked away in the rural village of Streat in East Sussex, overlooking the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The Dairy is a picturesque self-catering holiday cottage which has been smartly converted to offer guests a peaceful retreat set in the beautiful surroundings of the Sussex countryside and yet just 7 miles from the historical town of Lewes and 10 miles from the bright lights of Brighton. It has been selected to feature as one of Alistair Sawday's 'Special Places To Stay'.
There is also The Shepherds Hut which is available to guests in the warmer months from April through to October. It can either be booked independently or to accommodate additional guests when booking The Dairy. The Shepherds Hut is ideal for single occupants, cosy couples or adventurous children - and all those that are looking for an authentic Shepherd’s Hut experience.
The Dairy and The Shepherd’s Hut are part of the curtilage of Streat Place Barn which was built around 1600. Streat Place Barn and its buildings have been carefully and sympathetically restored over the years by its’ owners Jinks McGrath, a jeweller, and Steve Turner, a carpenter and timber framer.

“Cosmetics operate in Shakespearean and Renaissance drama in several ways. First and foremost, we see them in their material form; face paints allow for a variety of significations: femininity, identicality, supernaturalism, for example. Intrinsic to representation on the stage, cosmetics are a poignant reminder of the performativity of gender, race, and monarchy. Identifiable by secondary, prosthetic accoutrements, gender, race and monarchy are enactments of identity regardless of the bodies behind them, and cosmetics signify and help to construct these enactments.
Secondly, makeup decorates, enhances, and re-materializes the body. Jonathan Sawday identifies a ‘culture of dissection’ that was striving to bring forth the internal realities of the body. Cosmetics complicate this cultural compulsion by obscuring and concealing the body further; simultaneously, the ‘laying on’ of cosmetic paints paradoxically laid the body open to contamination, therefore judgement and vilification. ...Early modern writers refer to cosmetic adornment when they speak of beautifying, tricking and adorning, and cosmetics are themselves commonly denoted as ‘ceruse’, ‘fucus’ (both face paints/foundations), ‘paintings’, ‘paint’.”
- Farah Karim-Cooper, “Defining Beauty in Renaissance Culture.” in Cosmetics in Shakespearean and Renaissance Drama

Gothic Lodge in Pembrokeshire
Dreamy little cottage on the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. Perfect spot to reach all of the best beaches in the area including Barafundle Bay (pictured) - voted one of the best beaches in the U.K. That is a short walk from National Trust car park to the beach so ensure you take a rucksack for the little one as on the cliff top. Totally worth the walk. Stunning. Decorated beautifully throughout and has a great cosy vibe about it with the woodburner etc.
The cottage is in land so you need a car but makes it better value.
Had a great evening off with the husband at nearby Stackpole Inn. Great local fish but must book even mid-week off season!
Booked this through Sawdays and their pictures didn’t do it justice (neither do ours!).
Sleeps 6 (2 doubles and one room with bunk beds).
