Haryana was part of the Kuru Kingdom during the Vedic era during 1200 BCE.

Haryana has been inhabited since the pre-historic period. Haryana was part of the Indus Valley civilization during the Bronze Age period. The ancient sites of Rakhigarhi and Bhirrana are some of the oldest Indus Valley civilization sites.(5) Haryana was part of the Kuru Kingdom during the Vedic era during 1200 BCE.(6)(7)(8) The area now Haryana has been ruled by some of the major empires of India. The Pushyabhuti dynasty ruled the region in the 7th century, with its capital at Thanesar. Harsha was a prominent king of the dynasty.(9) The Tomara dynasty ruled the region from 8th to 12th century. The Chahamanas of Shakambhari defeated them in the 12th century.(10)

In 1192, Chahamanas were defeated by Ghurids in Second Battle of Tarain.(10) In 1398, Timur attacked and sacked the cities of Sirsa, Fatehabad, Sunam, Kaithal and Panipat.(12)(13) In the First Battle of Panipat (1526), Babur defeated the Lodis. Hem Chandra Vikramaditya claimed royal status after defeating Akbar's Mughal forces on 7 October 1556 in the Battle of Delhi. In the Second Battle of Panipat (1556), Akbar defeated the local Haryanvi Hindu Emperor of Delhi, who belonged to Rewari. Hem Chandra Vikramaditya had won 22 battles across India from Punjab to Bengal, defeating the Mughals and Afghans. Hemu had defeated Akbar's forces twice at Agra and the Battle of Delhi in 1556 to become the last Hindu Emperor of India with a formal coronation at Purana Quila in Delhi on 7 October 1556. In the Third Battle of Panipat (1761), the Afghan king Ahmad Shah Abdali defeated the Marathas.(14)

In 1966, the Punjab Reorganisation Act (1966) came into effect, resulting in the creation of the state of Haryana on 1 November 1966.(15)

The main communities in Haryana are Gujjar, Jat, Brahmin, Agarwal, Ahir, Chamar, Nai, Ror,Rajput, Saini, Kumhar, Bishnoi etc.(16) Punjabi khatri and Sindhi refugees who migrated from Pakistan had settled in large numbers in Haryana and delhi.

There is increasingly large diaspora of Haryanvis in Australia, Canada, Singapore, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, USA, etc.

In Australia, the community lives mainly in Sydney and Melbourne, has set up Association of Haryanvis in Australia (AHA) which organise events.(17)

In Singapore, the community has set up the Singapore Haryanvi Kunba organisation in 2012 which also has a Facebook group of same name. Singapore has Arya Samaj and several Hindu temples.

Haryanvi, like Khariboli and Braj is a branch of the Western Hindi dialect, and it is written in Devanagari script.(18)

Folk music and dance

Main article: Music of Haryana

Folk music is integral part of Haryanvi culture. Folk song are sung during occasion of child birth, wedding, festival, and Satsang (singing religious songs).(2) Some haryanvi folk songs which are sung by young woman and girls are Phagan, katak, Samman, Jatki, Jachcha, Bande-Bandee, Santhene. Some songs which are sung by older women are Mangal geet, Bhajan, Sagai, bhat, Kuan pujan, Sanjhi and Holi. Folk songs are sung in Tar or Mandra stan.(19) Some dances are Khoriya, Chaupaiya, Loor, Been, Ghoomar, Dhamal, Phaag, Sawan and Gugga.(19)

Cuisine

Haryana is agricultural state known for producing foodgrains such as wheat, barley, pearl millet, maize, rice and high-quality dairy. Daily village meal in Haryana consist of a simple thali of roti, paired with a leafy stir-fry (saag in dishes such as gajar methi or aloo palak), condiments such as chaas, chutney, pickles. Some known Haryanvi dishes are green choliya (green chickpeas), bathua yogurt, bajre ki roti, sangri ki sabzi (beans), kachri ki chutney (wild cucumber) and bajre ki khichdi. Some sweets are panjiri and pinni prepared by unrefined sugar like bura and shakkar and diary. Malpua are popular during festivals.(20)

Traditional attire for men is turban, shirt, dhoti, jutti and cotton or woollen shawl. Traditional attire for female is typically an orhna (veil), shirt or angia (short blouse), ghagri (heavy long skirt) and Jitti. Saris are also worn. Traditionally the Khaddar (coarse cotton weave cloth) is a frequently used as the fabric.(21)(22)

Cinema

The First movie of Haryanvi cinema is Dharti which was released in 1968. The first financially successful Haryanvi movie was Chandrawal (1984) which spurted the continuing production of Haryanvi films, although none have been as successful.(23) Other films such as Phool Badan and Chora Haryane Ka followed with only about one out of twelve films being profitable at the box office.(23) In 2000, Aswini Chowdhary won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the National Film Awards for the Haryanvi film Laddo.(24) In 2010 the government of Haryana announced they were considering establishing a film board to promote Haryanvi-language films.(25)

Glimpses of Sawan Singh, The Great Master - Spiritual Discourses

We get to have a rare glimpse of the Great Master Huzur Baba Sawan Singh through the eyes of Harbans Singh Bedi, an initiate of Hazur who attended joyful satsang gatherings presided over by Sawan back during the 1940's.

Other glimpses of Sawan come from his letters, foreign correspondence with spiritual seekers and initiate-disciples in the West. Spiritual guidance from the Master included discussion about the power of unwavering attention at the Third Eye Center during meditation practice, guidance about Simran, Dhyan and Bhajan practices, the value of corresponding and consulting with someone more advanced on the Path, also about the need for everyone interested in the Path of the Masters & Inner Light and Sound Meditation (Surat Shabd Yoga), East and West, to adopt a vegetarian diet:

"Meats, eggs and alcoholic drinks are prohibited... The real Sant Mat, or the teachings of the Saints, and the system of Yoga which they follow is distinct and individual, and it consists of a definite method of going inside of the Kingdom of Heaven and taking possession of that Kingdom. And this is a Universal Science. It is adaptable to all peoples and all lands, and has absolutely nothing to do with climate or particular condition of any country or people. This much I would strongly emphasize... If one understands where and how to find the protein bearing foods, among vegetables and grains and fruits, he will never have any need whatsoever for meats or eggs." Also: "Meats, eggs and alcoholic drinks have to be given up by the practitioner. These articles of diet dull the soul."

Huzur Baba Sawan Singh Ji also provided some introductory meditation instructions for new spiritual seekers to give them a convenient method, a short, daily Jyoti (inner Light) Interim Meditation to help prepare them for the eventual initiation into the full practice given at the time of initiation.

The Great Master said that the ultimate or true peace will never be fully realized in this turbulent ocean of samsara, the outer world of constant change, but is to be found on the Inner Planes accessed during meditation from the inside, in the world of within:

"The Way to Peace lies within. Within us lies the Royal Word, the Sound Current, which mystics have called by various names but which means the same thing. Everybody has to go within himself to attain that peace." And: "The soul must seek Other Planes to find peace. To find peace is the business of the individual. Everybody has to seek it within himself." (Huzur Baba Sawan Singh Ji Maharaj)

Putrada Ekadashi: Know the time and rules of fasting on Putrada Ekadashi, which fills you with wealth and grains in the month of Paush.

Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Paush month is known as Putrada Ekadashi. It is said that the importance of this Ekadashi is also written in the Puranas. According to the Hindu calendar, Putrada Ekadashi falls twice a year. The first one falls on the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Pausha month. Whereas the fast of the second Putrada Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month. This fast is dedicated to Lord Shri Vishnu and it is believed that by observing Pausha Putrada Ekadashi fast, one gets virtuous results equal to Vajpayee Yagya. According to religious scriptures, this fast is considered very fruitful for those who do not have children. This time in Putrada Ekadashi. Si. Yoga is being formed, due to which the sanctity of this fast has increased further.

Putrada Ekadashi worship method of Putrada Ekadashi:

Install the idol of Lord Vishnu in the temple. Then take water from the conch and anoint the idol.

Apply sandalwood tilak to Lord Vishnu. Worship with rice, flowers, abeer, gulal, perfume, etc., and light a ghee lamp in front of the idol.

On this day, if possible, worship wearing yellow clothes and also offer yellow clothes to Lord Vishnu.

Fast story of Putrada Ekadashi

Lord Krishna himself had told the importance of Putrada Ekadashi to Dharmaraj Yudhishthir. According to the legend, in a city, there lived a king named Suketuman, whose wife's name was Shaivya. The king and queen had no children, about which he was always worried. He was always worried about who would take over his throne after that who would perform his last rites, Shraddha, Pind Daan, etc. after his death who would liberate him, and who would satisfy his ancestors. Just thinking about all this, the king started falling ill.

Once the king went out to visit the forest and started seeing the beauty of nature, there he saw how deer, peacocks, and other animals and birds were enjoying life with their wives and children. Seeing this he became even more disturbed. He started thinking that despite doing so many good deeds, I was childless. Then the king felt thirsty and started wandering here and there in search of water. While wandering, his eyes fell on the hermitage of sages built on the banks of a river. Being a devotee, the king went there and paid obeisance to all the sages. Seeing the simple nature of the king, all the sages were extremely pleased with him and asked him to ask for a boon. To which the king replied, “O God! By the grace of God and you Saint Mahatmas, I have everything, only I have no children, due to which my life is meaningless.”

Hearing this the sage said, “King! God himself has sent you here today with a special blessing on you. Today is Putrada Ekadashi and you should fast on this Ekadashi with full devotion. By doing this you will get a son. Hearing this from the sage, the king observed that fast and according to the rules Break the fast on the day of Dashashi. After a few days, the queen became pregnant and gave birth to a bright and successful son and finally, the king attained salvation. In this way the importance of this fast increased manifold.
