Rolo over the years

28th September is when Turn 25 “Re;” first aired, and together with Lost Stories also wrapping up R2 in its latest update, I’ve been remembering just how I miss what Code Geass was like before the year 2012ish. Rolo has been, in my opinion, treated worse since then.

Apologies in advance, as I'm going to complain, but I want to share what I remember about a time which may be forgotten or unknown to younger fans:

Before Akito, Code Geass’ “canon” story was mainly the 50 episodes of the anime. Picture/Illust Dramas, season 1 Sound Episodes (R2 SEs mostly stopped being serious) and official publications here and there were also part of the canon, but beyond that, comics like Majiko’s, Nightmare of Nunnally, or videogames such as Lost Colors diverged sufficiently from the anime to be clearly treated as AU spin-offs. Code Geass ended with Lelouch dying, and despite plenty of “the cart driver is Lelouch” theories, the creators themselves stated that Lelouch was dead (can’t remember the source, but it’s probably well documented somewhere). I miss when Lelouch stayed dead, not just as a Rolo fan, but because that’s what made the story bittersweet. That’s what made Continued Story a song I personally couldn’t listen to. All the fanarts of the characters being happy together when you knew Lelouch never got to experience that… It was sad, but in a pretty way. And yet, I guess many viewers do like Lelouch resurrecting, considering that both Lost Stories and Rozé follow that canon. For me, watching L.L. do nothing but speak in cryptic messages with C.C. is sadder than accepting his death, and not the “pretty” kind this time, but the “Lelouch was forcibly turned into someone who isn’t him” kind of sad. As for Rolo, during R2, Lelouch lived for 5 more episodes after Rolo’s death. And in such a brief period, he remembered Rolo as many as 5 times: Turn 20 preview, when Rivalz asked in Turn 20, Turn 21 preview, Turn 24 when Lelouch recalls the people who sought happiness, Turn 25 when his life flashes before his eyes. Back around 2008~2010, believing Rolo had become important to Lelouch was easy. Hikari (summary) was canon. Kiseki no Tanjoubi most likely isn’t, but Lelouch and Rolo had the main roles and Lelouch worries when Rolo gets tired. New official illustrations were still being released. The Special Edition Zero Requiem was dedicated to Shirley and Rolo because they inspired Lelouch’s Zero Requiem plan. That’s a lot of Rolo attention coming not just from the staff, but Lelouch himself. Yet resurrected!Lelouch doesn't remember Rolo again! Except for maybe just once, when Rolo and Euphy were saving him… and unfortunately for me, he uses kimitachi, which implies he was addressing Euphy (he would have used omaetachi with Rolo)… 😭 I also gacha'd Emperor Lelouch a couple days ago, hoping to find ロロ in any of his lines, but nothing. Code Geass’s canon expanding after R2 mostly took good things away from Rolo, and added bad things: -Akito and Oz both did damage to Rolo and Lelouch’s meeting. When only R2 existed, we assumed that Rolo had met Lelouch very shortly after Charles’ Geass, and that Rolo and Lelouch spent a whole year together. Akito shortened their happy year because Lelouch now needed to be Julius first, and Oz introduced Clara, who, turns out, was actually the initial choice to replace Nunnally instead of Rolo?! And even though I don’t think she even got to meet Lelouch, I don’t like how Rolo was no longer *the* Nunnally replacement. Since Rolo mentions unmei in Arabesque, I think he would have preferred to believe Lelouch and him were “destined” to meet -Couldn’t Benio and Savitri's stories be told without involving Rolo negatively? Did he need more sins? Ohgi and Nina have been redeemed in recent years, while Rolo… didn’t kill Shirley in the movies, but in the Fukkatsu manga and Lost Stories he did, so I still feel like he killed Shirley in the Fukkatsu canon -We don't talk about GeaGene -Mario/Maya ruining Rolo’s sacrifice There’s another piece of knowledge seemingly lost to time, which is that those pictures of Lelouch and Rolo aren't official. You know the ones. They were drawn by Yukie Sakou, who WAS an official animator/illustrator, but she released Anniversary & Memorial on her own. I've seen misinformed comments... Something else about Fukkatsu: I liked C.C. better when she wanted to live and be happy without depending on the protagonist for it. But if C.C. fans disagree, they certainly know her better than I do.

Julian raised the wooden bat at eye level and inspected the infamous Louisville slugger stamp branded along the barrel with close precision. Even though it had been well past his prime playing baseball in high school, the countless ball games and practices came flooding back. His feet seemed to instinctively know what pose to land, his hands knowing where they should curl around the bat's handle, fingers firmly gripping and knuckles lining up perfectly. Muscle memory at its finest after over a decade.

The batting cages were relatively empty this time of year, ensuring him a prime spot with plenty privacy one could not take for granted. Julian required the distraction anyway, distancing himself from the family, from the faction drama, from the noise constantly bombarding his thoughts. Some people found their distractions elsewhere like reading or a long hike in their favorite park, but his options were limited. Books did nothing but remind the young man of the jealousy he experienced for the characters and their lives far unlike his own. And if rumor mill whispers began spreading as he suspected, especially when Savitri caught a whiff of his alliances, it certainly wasn't the best idea for Julian to be walking the streets so out in the open right now.

God, Savitri, how blissful it has been without the gossip blog churning and the text notifications blowing up the phone of everyone in each faction, tormenting those who became a clout target for their amusement. Julian wasn't an innocent party involved in his fair share of scandal, so it seemed surprising that no secret he kept close ever blasted across the blog's many tantalizing posts. The company he associated with increased any chance that somebody as all knowing as Savitri could place the puzzle pieces together and figure out just how much of an impossible choice he's been forced to make.

The sound of the pitching machine caught Julian's attention just in time to drag him back as it sent a baseball flying towards his direction, giving the male enough of a split second to swing the bat and completely miss it, watching instead as it veered past and smacked straight into the wired fence behind him. Damn, his skills weren't that rusty already, were they? The logical excuses came flooding through Julian's mind, his hands were sweaty, he was out of practice since high school, the sun's glare blinded his purview, nothing but reason. He was a stubborn optimist, but he could play with logic from time to time.

Julian thought fixing the position he stood in solved the problem, even adjusting the grip on the bat might aid the previous mishap. Mistakes happened, no play was perfect, he just knew the talents he possessed never failed on such a rookie fumble. Breathe and focus, sage advice from his old coach. Never take your eye off the ball. He latched onto the moral support, ensuring that was the one thought he would focus on as another baseball ejected toward him. Julian saw it coming with fervor, knowing what he must do and feeling the weight of the bat in his palms, but there was an unusual hesitation the moment he swung, once again missing the trajectory of the ball entirely. He was overthinking this now. Sitting here, imagining his coach or any pair of judgmental eyes watching him fail the second go-around when he was a well-trained baseball player. No...what Julian actually was was a washed up high school has-been varsity jock who risked everything his junior year falling in love with a faction leader's daughter.

He shook the inkling of Morrigan away, knowing what will come of it once he dives too deeply. His life didn't revolve around her, it couldn't, not when she wasn't willing to welcome him back for duty's sake. He could patch the pieces of his heart together and move on if he truly tried, surround himself with good people devoid of corruption for the most part, and find someone who never brought him this much misery. Balancing normalcy and being with Morrigan at once, who the fuck was he kidding? She threatened his younger brother, caused irreparable damage to both Austen and Wyatt's psyche, she made her choice and pushed him away. He made his too, neither weren't at fault. Why bother?

Julian tapped the bat gently against the ground and released a huff of frustration, typically holding an entire city's worth of patience and finding it draining away rather unnervingly quickly. He would hit this one right out of the park, no more thoughts about any Urie or Hedgestone, not even Casey will cloud his concentration. Something was getting to him and burrowing itself into every crevice of his mind. Those negative feelings, the strong emotions, were neatly stored within an imaginary bottle Julian concealed tight by shoving a stopper on the opening, and now...it was starting to leak. The calm and collected almost reached utter depletion, but he cannot allow that to happen. Anger doesn't prosper.

One click of the machine, nothing but the sound of the internal mechanisms spinning the two tires drifted through the crisp autumn air, and leaving a racing heartbeat pounding in the male's ears. Julian readied himself for the pitch as he had for the previous two unsuccessful times, feeling as if he were watching the ball head towards him in slow motion. How strange is it that what he was seeing wasn't actually the ball, but Douglas Urie, the true source of his burning anger etched on the pristine white leather. Morrigan's father treated her as a disposable object unworthy of love, he's the reason why their relationship imploded. He tormented, abused, murdered in power's name. And as the ball came closer, Julian could see...Douglas Urie was laughing at him. At his pain, at Morrigan's agony, certainly at the paranoia in which the foundation of his faction was built upon. Knowing his daughter knew the price of the heavy crown and having no one to trust as a result.

So, Julian swung the baseball bat as hard as he could and as accurately as he could, expecting the satisfying reverberation he anticipated from the ball making contact with the wood, but it never came. The same hesitation swept through him again and left the ball instead whistling past his head before smacking the fence, watching it drop to the cement and slowly roll toward his feet with a dramatic fashion no one would believe had he told them. Julian could do absolutely nothing for a moment except stand in disbelieving silence as the sheer irony dawned on him. The former leader of Hedgestone, alive or dead, had won.

And that was enough to shatter him.

Why can't he just live in a world where he was not forced to give up everything? His happiness, his sanctity, his sanity, placing into question his morality at every turn? A traitor among liars who spent years lying to himself over the fact he knew a faction leader intimately and still found the pathetic desires crawling back to her begging for the torment to end. You don't continue returning when the woman you still loved so clearly chose solitude unless you were an extreme glutton for punishment. It was one thing Julian had that was truly his, their secret, but men throughout history were called fools for wanting what they can never have. Forbidden love tainted by tragedy and a faction steeped by turmoil.

A switch flipped on in the eldest Reese's head that he never dared touch before, an unseen wrath shrouded by a patient demeanor and personal everyday sacrifices, snapped in two. The moment he disregarded the public setting and the self-restraint holding together the cracked edges of who he was, it was finished. The man lifted the bat and suddenly sent it flying into the wire fence, releasing an agonizing roar that carried through the wilting trees surrounding the field. However, he did not stop there. Julian reared back, losing all sense of direction as he slammed the Louisville slugger against the fence over and over and over, ignoring the ear-splitting clanging as wood collided with metal. It was as if the outrage traveled along his arm and cascaded through the makeshift weapon, a metaphorical extension of the anguish pouring from his inner core. This...this was no longer a batting cage, it was his cage, imprisoning him to a dark fate and he couldn't breathe. He needed out and he needed an escape now.

Each time the baseball bat collided with the barrier, again and again, the piercing thoughts rattled against the dark-haired male's skull like a pinball machine. What would his life beyond the faction be if he left Hedgestone behind for good in search of levity, if he abandoned Morrigan and any failing pursuit not worth signing away his whole existence? He could take the offer Judas lay before him, cross the border, and never face the woman who held his heart in her hand ever again. What he would not give for the luxury of a new life, something different to renew all lost hope. Those are the saccharine dreams of the optimism. There is no escaping who he was or the choices he made, not even Judas Langley could play the savior.

Julian couldn't recall how many throws he swung, but by the moment that bat loosened from his grasp and clattered to the concrete, he directed one last assault against the enclosure with the palm of his hand. "Fuck!" Shouting explicitly, he turned around and created distance between him and the wall towering over on all four sides. His chest heaved, his arms ached, and his entire body screamed exhaustion. Shit, he was so fucking tired of being alone fighting a losing battle nobody would ever understand in their lifetime. Alone. Morrigan didn't need him when she owned a faction, Casey would rather stay with Judas than spend another minute with his own idiot brother who pined after his secret high school girlfriend that was seconds from shoving him out the nearest exit because her faction came first. His parents, loving as they might be, dismissed the truth concealed by niceties. Even they were blinded by the pedestal they threw him on.

Julian's gaze scanned the invisible destruction he caused around him, at least grateful he didn't smash the pitching machine. What would an average person walking by the batting cage come upon if they saw him now, a bad-tempered hothead with steam pouring from his ears or a plea for help that required ignorance when he wasn't their problem to solve? His curly locks were a disheveled mess and several spots on his tee shirt dripped with patches of sweat. He looked disastrous, drained of all emotion and spark, like a hurricane wreaked havoc on all that is Julian Reese.

He reached for his jacket, uncertain of where he would go from here. Not home, not with those who pretended to be his friends, and there is no way in hell he'd end up at Morrigan's door appearing like a walking calamity. He would run from this mess that he is, no, he would be running from the daylight. If he couldn't set himself free from the length of rope tethering him to his doom, if Judas' promise could not hold, then...Julian saw darkness in the distance.

There was only one place he could go.

Uncontrollable Rolo

I skipped last month's Lost Stories update because it was just a faithful adaptation of Turns 13 & 14... and yeah, Shirley is no longer alive. Pilotsuit!Rolo can't be obtained yet either (which I honestly prefer, because I doubt many users would be willing to pull for him right now), but there might be a plan to release him someday, as his pilot suit outfit isn't available at the costumes shop. That is to say, some outfits are not released as a separate unit with its own specific type/parameters/lines/etc., but rather as a swappable skin. In Rolo's case, his Akito outfit (called "Neblos" by the game itself) is just a re-skin for either regular or sailor Rolo:

Then again, by this point of the story Vincent is damaged beyond repair, so unless pilotsuit!Rolo is added during some special or flashback event, he might also just not be added at all, not even as a re-skin. Anyways, I recorded a video because this month's Turns 15 & 16 did have a few new Rolo scenes compared to the anime, though I can't exactly say they paint him in a good light...

Truth be told, from Turn 13 to Turn 18 the anime did very little to make Rolo likeable. He's all sweet at the beginning of Turn 13 and pitiable at the end of Turn 18 when Lelouch yells at him, but everything else in between is just him murdering Shirley, murdering children and then planning to murder Nunnally. And now Lost Stories added "almost murdering Benio and Savitri" to that list.

During the first scene, Rolo's worried that Brother has disappeared. When Kinoshita says they can't find Doumeki (Mario/Maya's alias) either, Rolo's response is "Worry about Doumeki later. He was probably killed by that Golden Decoration anyway" ("Golden Decoration" is the nickname for the KMF used by Carly, an evil lady from the game). Kinoshita also suggests first verifying the damages suffered, but Rolo irritatedly tells him that finding Zero is the priority. No wonder Kinoshita's only face during the entire video is "😟". Next, there's a small scene after Lelouch has returned from the Sword of Akasha. In the anime, too, Lelouch told C.C. that he had called Rolo, and now we see Lelouch and Rolo interact: Rolo: Brother! Lelouch: You're here, Rolo. Rolo: I've been looking for you the whole time! And I searched here so many times as well... Lelouch: I'll explain it later. We will retreat. Rolo: Eh? But... Lelouch: V.V. has been defeated. He's gone. Rolo: That can't... I mean, V.V. is immortal... Lelouch: Still, I defeated him. The Emperor too, most likely... More importantly, how is the progress on the bomb installation I requested? Rolo: Ah, yeah... I think they'll be ready soon... Kinoshita (over the communicator): Kinoshita here. We have finished placing the bombs at the designated locations. Lelouch (Zero voice, over the communicator): Well done. Us Black Knights will return to Hourai Island. To all units, head back to the airship. Kinoshita (over the communicator): Zero? R-roger. Lelouch: You too, Rolo. I'll take care of the rest. Rolo: Y-yeah. Okay. Lelouch then says to himself that he was at least able to defeat V.V., who gave Rolo his Geass, and the Emperor, who manipulated Shirley's memories. He crushes the Geass Order once and for all. Afterwards, inside Zero's room at the Ikaruga: Lelouch: What? You can't find Doumeki? Why didn't you tell me sooner? Rolo: I couldn't. I couldn't contact you, and I had to take command of the scene... Lelouch: Tch, what's done is done. Then begin the search immediately... Rolo: It's not possible, Brother. My airframe isn't in working condition, and we can't let other people get near the Order. Lelouch: Then we should just use Kinoshita or Benio and the others. There's no doubt that the one who took him [Mario] away was the Golden Decoration. We must follow its trail. Rolo: Brother, is that what you want? This isn't the moment to be fixated on that guy, is it? After destroying the Geass Order, in order to create a place for us, we have no choice but to strike at Britannia's homeland. You promised, didn't you? That you would give me a place to belong... Lelouch: ... Very well. I want to collect myself and think about the next move. Could you leave for a while? Rolo: ... Yeah. Alright. But Brother, don't forget it, okay. Our promise... Lelouch: I know.

I suppose it would be easier to feel sorry for Rolo if he said "I just want to be happy with you" instead of "don't forget our promise", but the fact that Lelouch made a promise *is* the only argument Rolo has, so he needs to use it. Not only that, but Rolo isn't the type to open up about his emotional vulnerabilities in front of others. He has Arabesque, BokuTori, Turn 19.02, the regret message and other stuff where he expresses his emotions in such a heartfelt manner, but then he doesn't actually ever directly talk to Lelouch like that, you know what I mean? I wish we got more of that "contemplative Rolo" here, even if it's through some scenes where he's alone, because just watching the anime you probably get the impression that Rolo is much colder and unable to understand the world around him than he actually is.

Lelouch: Among the people who know Zero's true identity only Jeremiah and Sayoko remain. And then, there's Rolo… (However, Rolo's uncontrollability is a double-edged sword. There's what happened with Shirley, too. I must be careful with how I handle him...) I find it funny that there isn't a more Japanese word to say "uncontrollability". アンコントローラブルさ, really? Sasuga Britannian prince... To continue with the video, next comes a longer version of the scene where Rolo benevolently spares Asahina's life. Yes, the scene where Asahina doesn't agree that "the value of a member of the Black Knights is measured by how much Zero trusts them". Now Benio is part of that moment too, and she wants to speak with Zero (about the mission where they massacred the Geass Order). Rolo: You are... Benio Akagi, huh. Weren't you listening right now? What matters is how much Zero trusts you. There's no way Zero would speak with someone like you. Benio: But...! Rolo: You better stop... Asahina: Hm. If you're speaking on behalf of Zero, then so be it. However, don't forget that because of people like you, Zero's popularity is declining. Let's go, you two. Kinoshita: Y-Yes. Come on, you too, Akagi... Benio: Yes... Rolo: Hm. (Zero's popularity, he says? Brother only needs me. I'm the only one... At any rate, that Benio Akagi might let out the secret. I should deal with her as soon as possible...) Rolo making friends! Him going all paranoiacally possessive when Nunnally is brought up is one thing, but now this... I'm not sure if Turn 19 is going to be enough for Lost Stories players to "forgive" him? The final part of the video is almost the same as the manga's here, so I won't translate it again. Except for these crazy lines: Rolo: Why do you question Zero? What Brother decides is absolute. He promised that he would create a place for me. That's why it was necessary to destroy the Order. When Brother decides it, it's absolute. Because it leads to my future with him. So there's no need for anyone who has doubts or doesn't listen to what they are told. He doesn't need them. Apart from me, Brother needs no one. In his defense, it's not like Rolo's brain works like that all the time. He was able to calmly give Lelouch actual, convincing reasons why it was better for him to forget Nunnally and stay with Rolo instead during Turn 7. Rolo really must be panicking during this scene with Benio to reach such levels of irrationality (also, I get the impression that "that's why it was necessary to destroy the Order" isn't an answer to Benio's question, but rather something he keeps telling himself because having to destroy his previous home did affect him a little?). I think a part of him recognizes that he's disobeying orders himself by deciding to eliminate Black Knights members without Lelouch's permission, and that's why he sounds so delusional? Unlike me, who's totally not delusionally justifying the actions of this assassin with an untraceable body count.

1. Prison Playbook (2017)

Dalam drama ini Jung Hae In tidak menjadi pemeran utama dan dia juga tidak muncul sedari awal, namun drama yang menceritakan kehidupan di dalam penjara ini punya cerita yang apik. Dengan 16 episode, drama ini menawarkan plot twist yang menarik dan karakter yang kuat dari para pemainnya. Untuk para pecinta drama Korea yang ingin menikmati genre yang berbeda, kalian bisa nonton Prison Playbook sebagai pilihan.

2. Something in the Rain (2018)

Something in the Rain atau judul lainnya Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food adalah drama favoritku berikutnya. Mungkin selama ini Yoon Jin Ah (Son Ye Jin) tidak pernah membayangkan kalau akhirnya dia punya perasaan romantis terhadap Seo Joon Hee (Jung Hae In) adik laki-laki dari sahabatnya. Orang tuanya pun telah menganggap sahabat dan adiknya itu seperti anaknya. Cerita cinta yang sederhana namun menjadi sangat berwarna karena konflik yang muncul membuat drama ini salah satu yang berkesan untukku.

3. One Spring Night (2019)

Drama ini menceritakan perjalanan romantis antara Yoo Ji Ho (Jung Hae In) yang berperan sebagai seorang Apoteker dan Lee Jung In (Han Ji Min). Keduanya bertemu tanpa sengaja dan membuat Yoo Ji Ho jatuh cinta pada pandangan pertama, namun berbeda dengan Lee Jung In yang telah lama berkencan dengan seseorang dari keluarga yang kaya raya. Pertemuan kedua mereka sangat tak terduga karena ternyata kekasih dari Lee Jung In adalah senior Yoo Ji Ho sewaktu di kampus dulu. Setelah itu banyak hal tak terduga terjadi sehingga Lee Jung In harus memilih antara mengikuti kata hatinya dan meninggalkan hubungan yang telah terjalin lama atau mengubur perasaannya dan kembali ke rencana awal yang melibatkan keluarganya.

“The Queen has convinced everyone that you and the Princess are mad with the death of your parents,” the Queen of the Mice said. “And if Princess Savitri tries to take the crown back, the transfer will not be peaceful. When I visit her, she does not speak, but I feel she wouldn’t want to.”

Rakhee sighed and ran a blue palmed hand through eir tangled hair. “That’s her choice,” e said. “And…” E swallowed, hard, cleared eir throat,  continued. “But before we try to think of anything to do next, we need to get out of here and get Savitri and Grandmother Alta to safety.”

“I have ears and eyes throughout the palace,” the Queen of the Mice said. She darted to the matted straw and poked her head into it. When she emerged, she had a tiny, gold-plated flower made from yellow gemstone in her tiny mouth. She returned to Rakhee and dropped it in eir hand. Rakhee’s fingers curled around it, and e tucked it carefully within the folds of eir saree.

“In case I don’t see you again. Show this to any mouse across the Five Countries, and they will know you are my friend.” She nudged her nose against Rakhee’s hand, and said,  “You’ll escape. I’ll find you a way. But I do not know if you’ll safely be able to stay.”

Rakhee swallowed hard and clenched eir jaw.

“All right,” e whispered. E swallowed again, trying to bring some moisture back to eir suddenly dry mouth.

“All right,” e repeated. “Thank you, Your Majesty.”

The Queen of the Mice bowed, and Rakhee nodded back.

And she scurried beneath the straw, and was gone.

might shift back into swtor since writing for it doesn't overwhelm me as much as transformers did.

doing my SW version where Kritanta and Vowrawn are the main characters of that arc, this time with Vowrawn as the Head of Sphere of Imperial Affairs, as Shaar took his canon seat Sphere of Production and Logistics instead.

I probably change up the crew for more non-human characters to replace Pierce and Broonmark, or replace Quinn and keep Pierce I'm unsure but it conflicts on that 'I refuse to go to Hoth').

Broonmark does not suit the crew imo. So, my first choice was Akaavi Spar as a Mando crew member and bodyguard to Vowrawn. Akaavi and Jaesa may grow closer as thry hang out together and Vowrawn was playing the matchmaker to them. I'm drawing a blank on the second choice replacement and there had been too many human characters to fit in.

As for Savitri who was Aris' and Jazz' birth mom, she was a surrogate who wanted her dear friends to be happy to have a family of their own, while she still pursuing her own archaeologist career dreams to find ruins with Talos. I have to tone down main ocs to a minimum of three as I invested a lot into Kritanta, Aris and Jazz (and they were my most played ocs), so it's easier on me to talk about them and headcanon ideas.

Kritanta and Vowrawn would be my mlm ship as I'm fond of them and the old, married men in love thing they got going on. This is to balance out with Aris/Marr as wlw ship and Jazz/Scourge as pansexual f/m ship.

bonus: Lana working with Darth Marr instead of being an advisor to Darth Arkous. That's how Aris meets Lana and formed friendship with her through Marr.
