The US has officially proposed listing giraffes under the Endangered Species Act to combat their rapid decline. 🦒 With only 69,000 left in the wild, this move aims to regulate imports of giraffe parts, stop poaching, and support conservation efforts. Let’s protect these gentle giants and their future! 🌍 #SaveGiraffes #WildlifeProtection

Photo by @amivitale. Here's a little inspiration to get a jump into your Monday! This West African giraffe is leaping outside of Doulouwal Peulh, Niger - a village about 50 miles outside of the capital of Niamey. The giraffe population in the area made their way here in the late 1980's from neighboring Mali, driven by drought and war. When Amadou Hama, a Fulani herder in his 70's first encountered the animals, he said, "We thought it was the devil, because of that neck and those horns. People had told me about dangerous animals like lions, but nobody had ever told me about the giraffe. We were frightened. Even the cows were frightened,” He overcame their fears and today, like everyone here, is living side by side with the endangered West African giraffe in the country's government-defined Giraffe Zone. Today, there are only about 600 West African giraffes left on the planet (up from a low of 49 in the wild, itself a conservation success). In December 2018, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (@giraffe_conservation), with the Niger government and other partners, endeavored to move eight of these highly threatened giraffe from the zone to Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve, where they have been absent for more than 50 years. Follow @giraffe_conservation to learn more and get involved in saving this iconic species. @nikonusa #SaharaConservationFund #protectgiraffes #giraffe #savegiraffes #niger https://www.instagram.com/p/CgKnlXnPDtb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Even our Masai giraffe herd is excited to meet the mini-Masai giraffe! How exciting it is to announce the latest use of science for conservation - A big congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard on this! The new mini-Masai giraffe has been created to help keep giraffes alive in our challenging modern times. Being smaller makes it harder for poachers to find them and it is easier for the mini-Masai giraffe to slip though poacher snares without getting caught! * Seriously though… Conservation is no joke. Giraffes are facing serious crisis and genetically modifying them to be mini is NOT the answer. The problem is human caused and has a human solution. A solution that doesn’t involve altering giraffes, but instead altering our behavior. We need to shift away from JUST trying to stop/catch poachers and also INCLUDE supporting community conservation. Take a moment to follow @lewa_wildlife, @giraffe_conservation and @nrt_kenya learn more about giraffe conservation. . . . . #AprilFoolsDay #SorryNotSorry #Giraffe #Giraffes #GiraffeLove #SaveGiraffe #PicOfTheDay #PicOfTheWeek #WildlifeConservation #endangered #GiraffeConservation #savingspecies #EndExtinction #animalsofinstagram #animallovers #animalpolis #igscwildlife #exclusive_animals #animalworld #animalsmood #planet_of_animals #animal_in_world #PhotoOfTheDay (at San Diego Zoo Safari Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvuQi_jHWcw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6x5d1qmwid06

#Repost @natgeo Photo by @amivitale An orphaned baby reticulated giraffe embraces @r.e.s.c.u.e wildlife keeper Lekupania. This giraffe will be rehabilitated and returned to the wild, as a number of others have done before him. Giraffes are undergoing what has been referred to as a silent extinction. Current estimates of populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. The decline is thought to be caused by habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but with the lack of long-term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000 individuals. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to understand why giraffes are disappearing and what can be done to stop it. @giraffe_conservation @sdzsafaripark #giraffes #savegiraffe #northernkenya #animal #animallovers #wildlifeconservation #yoga #karma #travel (at Kenya) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu3-ePilIvD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=q1j642f7lwfv

Photo by @amivitale. A giraffe nibbles on a snare caught on the neck of the giraffe, on the left, seemingly trying to help her friend in the Singita Grumeti Reserves, a conservatory adjacent to Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Snares are traps, most often made of wire, that are set out by poachers to catch animals for the illegal bushmeat trade. While many animals caught in snares are used for food, many others will be left to rot or be so severely wounded they cannot feed or hunt, and as a result will die. I can not help but feel that my own country has been caught in a snare. For anyone feeling overwhelmed, this is exactly the moment to get to work. Every single one of us can make powerful impacts every single day. I'd love to hear your ideas on things you are doing to help one another, animals and wildlife and this planet itself. #protectgiraffes #DontLetThemDisappear #giraffe #savegiraffes #kenya https://www.instagram.com/p/CffYjIdMROn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reposted from @sheldricktrust - Happy #WorldGiraffeDay! Today, and every day, we’re working hard to protect this very special species. They’re listed as vulnerable to extinction, but in Tsavo — one of our primary areas of field operations — our efforts are paying off: The giraffe population there has grown by 49% in two years, with 4,323 individuals recorded in the latest aerial census! We even rescued an orphaned giraffe named Kiko, who currently runs the show at our Nursery. Kiko was just a week old when he was orphaned, but already he stood as tall as his rescuers. In the three and a half years since, he’s taught us a lot about the wonderful (and, in Kiko’s case, wily) ways of giraffes… and he now thoroughly towers above us all! Kiko and his kin still need our help. Stick your neck out for giraffes and support our vital field operations by donating at: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate _________ Photo © David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust #SheldrickTrust #DSWT #Kiko🦒 #🦒 #giraffe #kenya #whyilovekenya #rescue #adopt #KikoDSWT #savegiraffes #savethegiraffes - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/BzBt7V1hHYg/?igshid=1dmdj4nay7f6h
