Chancelor Johnathan Bennett (born April 16, 1993), known professionally as Chance the Rapper, is an American hip hop recording artist from the West Chatham neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. In 2013, he began to gain recognition following the release of his second mixtape, Acid Rap. Apart from his solo career, he is also a member of the Chicago collective Save Money (along with frequent collaborator Vic Mensa), and has worked as the lead vocalist for the band The Social Experiment. They released the widely lauded album Surf in May 2015. In May 2016, Bennett released the mixtape Coloring Book to further critical acclaim. This is Bennett's third mixtape, which has received three Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Album. Coloring Book was the first streaming-only album to ever receive a Grammy nomination. And at the 2017 Grammy Awards, Chance won “Best New Artist”, “Best Rap Performance”, and “Best Rap Album”. In November 2014, Chance was named Chicago's Outstanding Youth of the Year by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Chance has actively fought to combat gun violence in his hometown and in 2014, along with his father, promoted the "#SaveChicago" campaign. The campaign sought to stop gun violence over Memorial Day Weekend, and saw Chicago go 42 straight hours without a shooting. Chance met with President Obama at the White House on April 16, 2016, to discuss My Brother's Keeper Challenge, an initiative of the United States Federal Government to promote intervention by civic leaders in the lives of young men of color to address their unique challenges and to promote racial justice, with other musicians, including Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monáe, J. Cole and others. Chance started a Twitter campaign for May 23, 2016 using #May23 to stop gun violence for 42 hours. #kubitees #100blackpeople

Born With a Chance: Chance the Rapper by: John Teufel
Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, or better known as Chance the Rapper is a rapper out of Chicago, Illinois. Chance the Rapper had a decently comfortable upbringing due to his father being a politician. He started rapping in the sixth grade under the name “Chano”, which he still shouts out as one of his ad libs in his songs today. He eventually formed a group with one of his childhood friends and called it Instrumentality. After this childhood group disbanded in high school he started working on his own solo mixtapes and that is when he came out with “10 Day”. This was a mixtape he released on a free streaming website called DatPiff. This mixtape alone put Chance on the map as one of Chicago’s hottest up and coming rappers at that point in time.
Tumblr media
Chance the Rapper’s first mixtape cover 10 Day (Pictured Above)
The next mixtape Chance the Rapper released was the one I feel put him on the map, making him the independent, activist artist he is today. On April 30, 2013 Chance the Rapper released another free streaming mixtape to the public called “Acid Rap”. Another free mixtape that anyone could stream with services like “Soundcloud”, “Youtube”, etc. sent shock to record labels that had been trying to sign him since his first album “10 day”. This was it though, this put Chance in the rap game as one the few independent artists who consistently turned down record companies. By being an independent rapper Chance can pick and choose what songs he wants to release as well as what kind of music he wants to release. Lately Chance the Rapper has stopped releasing his typical upbeat rap style and changed up his genre towards more old school gospel. He has even messed around with old school R&B and jazz throughout his career. Chance the Rapper is an independent artist who makes his off strictly off touring and selling his merchandise. His active community work and donations are also another thing Chance the rapper is known for by his fans. Chance the Rapper is centrally involved in the #SaveChicago campaign which is a anti-violence initiative in a city known for crime and high murder rate. This is is just one of the many reasons why Chance the Rapper is known for his Chicago activism.
What makes Chance the Rapper such a different artists compared to the rest of the industry around him is his ability to be different. Like stated before Chance the Rapper is an independent artist, which means he has no people that “technically”own him. Record labels are corporations who take in new artists and musicians and promote them to basically become a product of the media. What I mean by that is that they try to get this new artist they have signed to sell as much music as possible to make the corporation money. This is where Chance the Rapper differs himself from the rappers who do sign with record labels. Chance has shown new and young artists that it is possible to make a career by releasing free music. In fact, Chance the Rapper was the first artist ever to win a Grammy from a streaming-only album. The album was called “Coloring Book” and this changed the game for all up and coming rappers.
Tumblr media
Chance the Rapper becomes the first artist to win a Grammy from a streaming-only album (Pictured Above)
Chance the Rapper highly credits the streaming site called SoundCloud. This streaming site was on its way out in 2017. Chance is said to be the one of the main reasons as to why this streaming website is still letting new and young  get their music out there for free. It is safe to assume since Chance is known for being friends with the CEO of Soundcloud and his tweets like “SoundCloud is here to stay” that he indeed made some generous donations. These type of acts do not go unnoticed and are also the types of acts we as fans do not see from the majority of people in the music industry.
Tumblr media
Chance is starting to become widely known around America for his activism in the African American community as well. Dahleen Glanton from the Chicago Tribune states “Chance also is an activist for justice, a voice of reason and a vivid reminder that young black men are worth fighting for.” One of the many things Chance has done for his highly populated African American hometowns, Chicago, was writing a one million dollar check to Chicago public schools. This helped him be put on “Times Magazine” top 100 most influential people of 2017. Another aspect of activism he has displayed for his African American community is the donation of his own Grammy, which he won by releasing only free music to the public, to the Dusable Museum of African American History. In a city for being known for violence and high rates of poverty it is astonishing to see someone to make it out of there successfully. Then come back to where his roots are and do everything in his power to make Chicago a cheerful place.
Chance the Rapper credits most of his popularity to his cult like fan base. This developed from his first mixtape “10 Day.” Which was actually named that because he got suspended during his high school days for ten days. The album alone received 400,000 downloads. What makes Chance the Rapper stand out from the rest of the mainstream rappers is his way of being independent in the rap industry and his activism within his hometown community. In certain ways he is also countercultural towards the rap community as well. We see many of the mainstream rappers today doing something called flexing their wealth. Which is basically showing off their jewelry or cars on social media. With Chance we don’t see much of that, instead he gives his wealth back to the people less fortunate. In my opinion this is a better way to makes use of his success and wealth. At some point isn’t too much money enough money? Or even isn’t better so your kids and their kids don’t have to work for it?

Chance the Rapper Will Become “Chance the Commencement Speaker” for Dillard University's Graduating Class of 2018
[caption id="attachment_429212" align="aligncenter" width="550"] Chance the Rapper performs in concert on the second day of week two of the Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Park on October 14, 2017 in Austin, Texas. SUZANNE CORDEIRO/AFP/Getty Images[/caption] Ladies and gentlemen, Chance the Rapper will become “Chance the Commencement Speaker” on May 12th and bless over 200 members of Dillard University's 2018 graduating class with words of encouragement and inspiration (maybe even in verse format) to fuel their futures. The independent musical genius, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, became the first artist to be nominated and win a Grammy for a streaming-only album. However, the fact that the 25-year-old is already so much more than the music has earned him the love, respect, and admiration of millions both young and old. Chance's philanthropic efforts and bouncy, infectious positivity are in part what prompted Dillard President Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough to dub him as "the artist that your grandmother would love." The AP reports: "Kimbrough says Chance is part of a new wave of artists who can openly talk about faith while being in hip hop, balancing the secular and the sacred....Kimbrough, who’s known as the Hip-Hop Prez, teaches a class on ethics and hip-hop and has sought Bennett to appear on campus for two years. Bennett has been intentional with using his ever growing popularity to give back to his hometown of Chicago, especially the youth who admire him. In 2014, Chance used #savechicago to stop gun-violence for 42 hours and since then, he’s forged ahead. And for three years, whether through hosting monthly high school OpenMike series at Chicago’s Public Libraries, raising over $100,000 to bring sleeping-bags and coats to Chicago’s homeless, or raising over $4 million for his local Chicago Public School System, Bennet makes helping others a priority. Bennett is also the founder and president of SocialWorks, a nonprofit created to empower youth through the arts, education, and civic engagement, and it’s his aim to reshape the possibilities through freedom and access for the youth of Chicago and the globe. 'The activism is a bonus with Chance,' Kimbrough said. 'I thought he made for a great commencement speaker because of his spirit of being entrepreneurial and authentic. But his civic engagement, including encouraging people to vote and willingness to speak out on issues, like his recent opposition to a Heineken ad, are just as paramount.'" To Chance, we say, keep on Chance-ing and may God bless you with continued success! - Dante Spellman

Chance the Rapper Responds to Thank You Letter From Chicago Public School Students
Spoil me - I'm a DJ and I'm cute!
Earlier this month, Chance the Rapper announced a $1 million dollar donation to Chicago Public Schools. (He is also encouraging fans to donate via his website.) Now, three CPS students—Alex Rojas, Alondra Cerros, and Annelisse Betancourt of Lake View High School—have shared an open letter thanking Chance, via Billboard. “There are many big celebrities from Chicago, but you are one of the few that really give back,” they wrote. “It is evident that you sincerely care for the youth here. This is why you are an inspiration to us. We appreciate you for not only representing us through your music, but also through your actions.”
The students continued, “All of the things that you do for our city never go unnoticed. All of the free concerts you host and all the time you spend here in the city really show you care. We notice it. We look up to you because the fame usually takes humility away from artists, but it hasn’t changed you.”
They also addressed his support of the 2014 #SaveChicago campaign, which resulted in Chicago going 42 hours without a gun-related homicide.
Read the full letter over at Billboard.
In response to the letter, Chance tweeted, “I appreciate you guys, and you’ll be happy to know the work has only just started. Huge things to come over the next 2 weeks.”
Michelle Obama also recently thanked Chance for his donation.
Read “Charting Chance the Rapper’s Unsigned Success,” as well as Chance’s foreword to Kevin Coval’s A People’s History of Chicago on the Pitch.
I appreciate you guys, and you'll be happy to know the work has only just started. Huge things to come over the next 2weeks. https://t.co/tplZMMW9DS

People who have inspired me to get involved in music.
The following people are people who have inspired me or motivated me to be involved in music. Most of them started from nothing and made a name for themselves or are currently working their asses off to make a name for themselves.
The first people I’m going to talk about are two very close friends of mine. People I’ve known for awhile and who are incredible musicians. Ethan Martin and Jeremy Bridges. Both are currently members of the RnB project I discussed in my first post named “AM”. They both have been a huge influence in the direction i want to go with my career. I first met Ethan when i started attending  local shows. My longtime friend Brady was in a band with Ethan which is when I first actually got to know Ethan. I could tell by just talking to him that this guy was very passionate about music. He had some very high but reasonable expectations for Forget About Tomorrow that he discussed with me a few times. I remember one time a fan from South Africa had actually messaged Forget About Tomorrow’s Facebook page stating how much their music meant to her and how it helped get her through a tough time and i remember seeing that make an impact on Ethan and i knew from that moment all he wanted was for people to listen to the music that he’s making and to have people relate to the music on a personal level. I still have yet to meet someone who as smart when it comes to music and songwriting as he is. Ethan is someone that I will always go to for advice on anything.
Jeremy and I became friends my Sophomore year of high school and we’ve always had a pretty rocky friendship but that’s my dude. We’ve definitely had our ups and downs but i still consider him one of my best friends. I watched him develop into a very seasoned and intelligent musician from not knowing anything about music except that Slipknot was his favorite band. He’s a very determined and motivated guy who knows music is exactly where he belongs and where he’s gonna be for the rest of his life. He’s been a huge help with Tri-Rivers Records and helping me think this project and adventure through. Coming up with ideas and supporting my idea no matter how crazy the idea of starting an Independent Record Label in a highly corporate influenced industry. Seeing his drive to become the best possible musician he can be and to take AM on to do amazing things has inspired me to do that same thing with Tri-Rivers Records. AM’s plans for 2017 are to continue writing music and release it independently later this year after they spend a week writing in Colorado this summer.
I would not be working on this label if it wasn’t for both of these guys.
Check out what they’ve been working on.
https://www.facebook.com/AMrnbks/
Tumblr media
The next person I’m gonna talk about is a pretty well-known rapper especially with the mixtape he released in 2016 and his work that’s done with the community in his home city of Chicago.
Chance the motherfuckin’ Rapper. Not only did this guy take the world by storm by releasing Coloring Books arguably the best release of 2016, but he also was the first artist to release a mixtape that was stream-only and take over the charts for the majority of 2016. Chance has inspired me not only because he is a very successful musician and made himself into one of the best rappers of this generation he is also a political activist. He proved that you don’t need a big label and a lot of money to be a big artist. He did everything on his own with the help of a select few well-known people including Kanye West. “Acid Rap” and “Coloring Books” have both proved to me and the world how great a musician Chance the Rapper is. He is also very involved in his community and politics. The night of the November election he lead thousands on a march to the polls cleverly named “A Parade to the Polls” he also started a campaign and was able to get Chicago to go 42 hours without a single shooting on memorial weekend that was called “#SaveChicago”. He’s made it pretty clear that if you have influence and have the ability to fight for what’s right then you should. He inspires me to continue working independently on Tri-Rivers Records but to always fight for what you believe in and spread love and to just have fun with all of it at the same time.
Tumblr media
The next influence i’m going to talk about is actually a group of people in a band called Linkin Park.
They are the first band I ever liked and still my favorite band. I remember my dad listening to their songs when i was kid and i remember how fucking amazing it was listening to a combination of hip hop and metal which was its very own genre called “Nu Metal”. Not at all popular anymore but in it’s prime Nu-Metal took over the entire world. I consider Linkin Park the kings of that genre because I don’t think anyone has had a bigger influence or impact in Nu Metal besides maybe Rage Against the Machine or Slipknot but these guys definitely knew what they were doing was crazy. Mixing two different genres of music where the fans of each combined genre were very different people but it worked for them and it made them huge. No albums will ever be as good as Meteora or Hybrid Theory which was indefinitely the best era of their existence. I distinctly remember listening to the opening track of Hybrid Theory and knowing immediately that these guys were amazing and talented. Through out these two albums they tackled personal issues that people could relate to and social issues that were occurring during 2000′s. Although i’m not a very big fan of their following 4 albums I still consider them a huge influence for Tri-Rivers Records. They have a long list of helping out different regions of the world out with charity and raising money to help. I think what inspires me most is how different they are from any other band in the world and how they were able to make that work for their benefit and were dubbed by multiple people and magazines as the “Biggest Rock Band in the World”.
Tumblr media
The next person i’m going to talk about is Jake Round owner and founder of Pure Noise Records based in Berkeley, California.
When he started Pure Noise in the fall of 2008 it was to help some friends of his in the band called “No Bragging Rights” release their music and from that point he kept at it until it moved from his apartment to their very own office, just 4 years later. He has some pretty notable bands on his roster including: The Story So Far, Four Year Strong, Terror, and Senses Fail. He inspires me because he just took a risk and made it work and now owns and operates a very successful label. I’ve read plenty of interviews with him and he’s very open about where and how he started. It’s motivating to see where I can take Tri-River Records if I just continuously work at it and become obsessed.
Pure Noise have a pretty talented roster of bands I suggest everyone check it out and i’m sure you’ll find someone you’ll enjoy
Tumblr media
My next influence is a man who owns many companies working in different parts of the music industry, the owner and founder of Third String Productions, Third String Records, Evolve Management, and the very successful So What?! Music Festival, Mike Ziemer.
Mike started over a decade ago as a small time promoter in Dallas, TX. Later moved to Los Angeles, California to expand his business. Third String Productions currently operates in not just one but six states across the country. Those states being California, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. As I stated in my introduction post I am currently working for Third String Productions Kansas under Ryan McFarland bringing bands to Wichita, KS such as The Acacia Strain, Otep, King Lil G, Whitechapel, and The Black Dahlia Murder. Mike, in my opinion is a master in the music industry. Not just because he has some very successful companies but because his professionalism and his knowledge of what does or doesn’t work in the industry. He’s also a prime example of starting from nothing and turning that into something huge. When I first started promoting shows it was my dream to make a living off of doing just that but I saw no way to make enough money to live but then I found out about Third String Productions when I was 17 and studied how consistent he was with shows in Texas and Oklahoma and I realized it was very possible if I just worked hard and continued to remain motivated and inspired. Mike, from what I’ve seen on social media is a very humble guy and he continues to show passion for what he does. Based on the many long posts he’s made encouraging people to follow their dreams and openly giving advice to anyone who asks for it. If you have the chance to, check out what Mike Ziemer has been working on and who he is.

My next and last influences I’m going to talk about are my amazing girlfriend Maggie and her son Rory. I know it’s typical to talk about someone incredibly close to you as your influence but without these two I would not be pursuing something this crazy. She continuously pushes me to chase my dream of owning a record label no matter how many times I get discouraged or get engulfed in self-doubt. Everyday Rory and her continue to motivate me and guide me on this project. Not only is Maggie an amazing girlfriend and mother but she is also an incredible artist, graphic designer, and activist for females, minorities, LGBTQ, and indigenous peoples rights. She’s currently going to school at Salina Technical University for Graphic Design. She works as a Barista and Events Manager at The Whitepeacock in Lindsborg, KS where we live. She also works for a local organization call Skeleton Crew working on bringing poetry and music events to Salina to positively impact the community. She also continuously works on her artwork and has art shows every few months. I’ve only known Maggie and Rory for 10 months but i can honestly say I have never been happier or more motivated to chase my dreams. They continue to inspire me and push me every single. Check out my girlfriends amazing artwork and graphic design using the link below.

Tumblr media
Each one of these people I talked about inspire and motivate me everyday to go and do something I love which is being involved in music. I want to run a successful record label. I want to make it easy for bands/artists to get their music heard. I want to be an icon for independent record labels, artists, and other people trying to make it in the industry independently.  I want to make a positive impact in not just my surrounding community but the industry itself.
