Well done:
I was sorrow and hurt, but went jogging. Fresh warmer air, physical activity and Taylor Swift’s eras tour set vitalised me. There is still some grief, but it’s easier to deal with when I’m active.
To better:
As I’ve bumped into my saviour complex, I feel frustrated. I’ve listened to a few podcasts and read articles, but the prime reason for my desire to save the world is still a mystery to me. Is it that I feel wounded by unreachable nature of my dreams, my farther’s death or basic unfulfillment of care and love in childhood. Keep on digging.
Delights:
The first episode of third season of “Sanditon”. Such a delight to know that all stories will end well and just enjoy the picture of life in process.
Jogging at the streets that are almost free of snow. On the way home I met a neighbour’s cat and rubbed him. He’s such a lovely creature.
Spontaneously we started to watch “Cranford”, we mused and laughed the whole time.
Human value:
I took care of my hygiene, used scrubs, oils, mask, creams, and fresh clothes. I’m worthy of care.
In the evening I was tired after cleaning up, so I just sat and enjoyed some period drama. It certainly gave me some warm feelings and sense of safe sentimentality.

Victorian and/or Royal AU Moodboard
Still a MAJOR work in progress, but it's in development! ⤷ Under Keep Reading for length ♡
Tumblr media
I wrote a version of this where it's royal AU esq, so I'mma make some lil' notes to add on top of that. ♡
•  Hermione isn't from a noble family per-se, her parents not being anyone of note. Not that she actually knows them. Hermione was left on the doorstep of Minerva McGonagall, a woman of title and poise, though leaving the note of keeping her last name as Granger. A strange request, and not one that could easily be complied with—questions would be asked, accusations thrown... but respects the wishes. •  Minerva raises Hermione as if she were her own, even if the child asks questions as to why her name is Granger and not McGonagall, which gets explained as Minerva is her stand in aunt, raising her as her parents are no longer with them. •  Hermione is raised to be a fine young woman, her hair still rather wild and curly, sometimes even pinned back ( but not too much ). Her dress of choice is that of a blue with pink ribbons to compliment it, flowery patterns decorating it. ( basically Erika's dress from Barbie: The Princess and The Pauper, a heavy inspiration for her look ). •  Though Hermione being raised as a fine lady, she is certainly NOT afraid to put her foot down for what she wants, the things she wants to pursue, even if it makes her image look terrible. She wants to help the world, be it in medicine or government business, not caring that an ideal like that is very frowned upon. •  Hermione is the type of girl who enjoys an independent study. If she's at a place with a library, there is where you'll find her. Even at a gala or ball, where she does love the atmosphere of a good waltz ( she finds it simply mesmerising and romantic ), she'd much rather have her nose in a book than some random bloke take her aside and think her as some future, stay-at-home wife. •  That being said, Hermione isn't against a romantic situation, be it if she does fall in love. Someone who respects her wishes and things she wants to do. To look in someone's eyes and simply know that's it, it's them. Whomever they might be. She might be a bookworm, but she's still a woman, one who'd want to be swept off her feet.
•  And the last point to add onto that, Hermione has a cat. Her pride and joy, a red Persian, which she named Crookshanks. Yes, a funny name for a cat, but she wouldn't change it for the world. If her cat doesn't like you, that's an indicator that you're not the one for his mistress. According to Hermione, he has an excellent judge of character, as if he were a human being—not that you could tell when his facial expressions don't change all too much, but when he likes you, he'll make sure to show it.

(This has been in my drafts for over a month [<- written in the summer of 2022 lol], let's just finish chewing this thing ...)
Part of the reason I'm obsessed with Our Flag Means Death is the magic of hyperfixation, but there's also something about it that just ... certain scenes, certain gifs, I see them and I absolutely melt. And I'm no stranger to romantic media, especially historical romance, so I had to ask myself why this, so much?
And I think the thing that really gets me about the romance in OFMD is that it's so entirely different from mainstream het romance (and again, especially historical romance) and that mainstream het romance is so often lazily written.
How often do you go to read/watch something where the protagonist and love interest immediately have a positive rapport, understand each other, smile at each other, admire each other, have fun together? And in contrast, how often is the love interest marked out by having immediate hostility with the protagonist, sniping, irrational disagreement, disapproval?
I watch Sanditon and Bridgerton mainly just to be aware of what's going on in them, because like it or not I'm kind of a Regency historian of sorts, but I can't really stand them. In the first season of Sanditon, the heroine, Charlotte was presented with two potential love interests, Sidney Parker and James Stringer. The former was the classic "we act like we hate each other because of our sexual tension," the latter was really adorable and full of smiles and care for each other. And ... Charlotte barely seemed to realize that Stringer was a real possibility, all narrative heft was given to her plotline with Sidney and of course they turned out to be in love. Then the second season rolled this back and brought in two new love interests, again with one having a positive relationship with her and the other constantly arguing and criticizing; the apparently positive one turns out to be a creepy Wickham while the one she initially dislikes turns out to be a good Darcy with manpain to deal with. (Same thing with her sister's love triangle.)
And there are loads of other examples where a potential love interest who is immediately pleasant turns out to be deceptive/meh while a potential love interest who spurs fights is endgame. Basically, this is because you need some kind of obstacle to stop the characters from getting together immediately. In historical romance written in the present day, social class and money aren't acceptable obstacles unless there's a pressing need for them written in (hence the prevalence of "father gambled away our fortune and you must marry well, my dear, to save us from the poorhouse" plots), and "we met in an awkward way and will not get over it" works, narratively, as an obstacle.
In contrast, what goes on in OFMD s1 is so much more complex - the characters liking each other but having internal reasons not to recognize their feelings or act on them gives more room for showing why they actually are good together.

Did you ever read Austen's unfinished novel, Sanditon?
Yes, here is a post I made about it.
The novel fragment Sanditon makes me very sad because it's so funny and unique! It's totally different than her previous works. Mr. Parker is such a type of person that you still meet today and I love him already. If I could time travel I would bring back a doctor, save Jane Austen, and get her to finish that novel!
I have not and likely will not watch the "adaptation".

The Winners by Fredrik Backman (Currently reading alongside the wonderfully insightful @the-smile-of-a-veil)
The Iliad by Homer (I studied The Odyssey and The Aeneid by Virgil at A-Level and I think it's blasphemous that I have not yet read The Iliad. I intend to read this one book per week, whilst making notes and researching scholarship in order to truly savour the experience)
Held by Anne Michaels (This was my most anticipated pick from the 2024 Booker Prize shortlist. I love WW1 history and historical fiction and the concept of the ghosts sounds so intriguing)
SPQR by Mary Beard (This is a behemoth of a book which has been on my shelf for at least five years. I'm so sorry, Mary!)
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (This was inspired by Passing by Nella Larsen - one of my favourite books of 2023 - so I'm very excited to find out how Bennett translates those themes into a modern context)
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (I have been buddy reading this with my remarkable best friend for almost a year now. We are big Steinbeck fans - having tackled East of Eden together a few years ago - but we are also busy women. This will be finished and relished in 2025!)
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan (I try to read some fantasy every year to remind myself of the beauty in a little magic. Parker-Chan's debut novel has so much acclaim that I feel I'm sure to love it)
Sanditon by Jane Austen (Now that I've read all of Austen's complete novels, it's only natural that I move onto the uncompleted works and short stories)
Eleanor of Acquitaine: A Life by Alison Weir (I bought this because I know altogether too much about the Tudors and next to nothing about the Plantagenets. However, I know that Alison Weir has a dubious reputation as a historian so I will take this book with a pinch of salt and continue to fact-check throughout)
A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle (I recognise this is technically only a short story not a book but I have a lovely collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, gifted to me by my aunt and uncle some years ago, and I must make a dent in it!)
Middlemarch by George Eliot (SPQR has a rival for the heftiest book which I intend to read this year. I've never read any Eliot but have heard nothing but praise for her writing so it's high time to remedy that)
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston (There's not much to say about this other than I read a snippet a while back and was hooked but decided to save it for the summertime)

Sanditon Meta: How Mr. Colbourne Saved This Regency Romance
By the time Charlotte’s story concluded in Sanditon’s third season, I was fully convinced the series had given its heroine a Jane Austen-worthy arc. Her romance with Mr. Sidney Parker in season 1 had sexy moments, sure, but it left me deeply unsettled. The guy lectured her regularly and didn’t seem to respect her as an equal. Plus he, you know, got engaged to an heiress without so much as a heads-up.
With Mr. Colbourne’s introduction in season 2, the show (inspired by an unfinished Austen manuscript) teased Charlotte’s second chance at love. Then Season 3 brought it all home. Evolving from a grumpy lord of the manor to a supportive life partner, Mr. Colbourne showed Charlotte that he is her true soulmate.
How? Let us count the ways…

Woo, so I've finished another chapter (save for editing), which means I've got two full chapters completed. And I've posted another gifset and have some in my drafts. (Um, all "Headless"-related though I've got other ideas for more.) I wrote just under 1000 words yesterday and wrote just over 800 words this morning, so I'm well on my way to writing more for today. And I managed to finally watch some things I've had from library. ("Sanditon" season three was very meh, but "Ghosts" season one—the BBC version—was absolutely wonderful, as expected. Highly recommend!)
Anyway, it's all about the little victories. 🥳

The Heart Drowns
Reader x Charlotte Heywood (and the Parkers) (platonic!!)
Tumblr media
Sometimes being in Sanditon seemed like a curse. The town was beautiful, and of course you loved it and it’s people dearly… but everything kept going wrong for you, you were often miserable. As the latest victim to Edward Denham’s mind games, your heart sufficiently broken in the process, you headed for the only place that could provide you peace and solace. The beach and the calming waves of the ocean never failed to make you feel better.
Of course, such a simple plan was going to go so horribly wrong for you. The wind picked up dramatically as you walked along the edge of the ocean, your dress billowing out and your bonnet almost falling off your head. Your instincts told you to turn back, but as the tears continued to flow, you deemed your heartbreak more important.
The heavens opened down onto you, your dress soaked in just a few short seconds, the rain and sea combined and hellbent on making you a true tragic heroine. An urgent shout caught your attention, turning towards the safety of the town to find your friend Charlotte Heywood pointing frantically at the sea, the Parkers just behind her waving you back to the land.
You looked where Charlotte was pointing, gasping as you saw the biggest wave you had ever seen coming towards you. Trying to run away, it was already too late. The sea swept underneath you, and you were thrown under the cold, harsh water. You could only vaguely hear the screams of worry coming from the shore, your own heart pounding loudly in your head. It was difficult to hold your breath as the ocean tossed you about.
Your bonnet now lost to you, it floated up to the surface, to the horror of the Parkers. They had, along with Charlotte, run down the steps onto the beach, yelling out your name as they tried to find a glimpse of you. Tom and Arthur were already removing their tailcoats and cravats to jump in and extract you.
It was Charlotte however you reached you first, as you struggled to find the surface to take a breath, your hand just barely breaching the surface. Your lungs ached and you felt the world slowly fading to black when a frantic hand grasped tightly onto yours. Charlotte tugged you to the surface, Tom scooping you up in his arms as your head finally breached the surface of the water.
The trio rushed up the beach back onto the safety of the shore, laying you down on your side. The water you had swallowed came rushing back out of your mouth on the street, as you loudly hacked and coughed your way through your first breaths since rescue. “Y/N, can you hear me?” Charlotte asked, rubbing your back softly, as the Parker brothers decided who would fetch the Doctor.
You vaguely nodded, the air burning your chest and throat. Heavy tremors wracked through you, from the cold air and the shock of the ordeal you’d been through. Tom ran off to find Dr Fuchs, leaving you in the care of Arthur, Mary and Charlotte.
“Let us get her inside before she catches her death out here.” Mary quietly instructed the others, who nodded sharply in agreement. Charlotte and Mary gently helped you to stand, the former putting an arm around your waist to steady you as you swayed. Arthur took off his coat, handing it to Mary as she wrapped it around you. “Thank you, Mr Parker.” You rasped, barely audible. “Don’t try and speak, dear. Save your strength.”
You softly nodded to show you understood, as you took tentative steps towards Trafalgar House. Even with heavy assistance, you had to stop often, doubled over coughing and spluttering and your legs acting like you were a baby deer. Despite Arthur’s coat covering you, your soaking wet clothing was chilling you to the bone and you were heavily shivering. Charlotte felt that she was having to hold you up more and more. She turned to Arthur with a half pleading, half concerned look. He instantly recognised what he wanted her to do. “May I, Miss Y/N?”
You were gathered into his arms before you could blink, and you clung tightly to him as the trio speedily made their way home. They burst through the doors of Trafalgar House, rushing you up the stairs into the guest bedroom. Arthur laid you down on top of the bed and left, before Charlotte and Mary began helping you out of you soaking attire.
“I’m sorry, Charlotte.” You croaked, wincing at the burning sensation in your throat. “It’s okay, Y/N, really.” Charlotte paused, placing a hand on your shoulder for a moment before continuing. “What were you doing out there in this weather anyway?” She asked, undoing your stays to pull your clingy undergarments away from your chilled skin.
“I needed some fresh air and a walk to… muddle through my murky thoughts.” Mary brought over a nightdress for you and helped to put in on. “Has something happened?” Charlotte pressed, watching your face fall as you chewed the inside of your cheek.
“Recently, I meddled with the wrong person and… had my heart sufficiently hurt in the process.” You lowered your head, as the pair pulled back the covers and helped you settle down onto the pillows, which propped you upright. “Oh, Y/N. I am so sorry, I didn’t know.” A sad smile appeared as you fiddled with the edge of the blankets. “It’s okay, I really should have known better given his reputation.”
You doubled over coughing again, and Mary rubbed your back soothingly as she raised an eyebrow at Charlotte. There was only one person they could think of. “Sir Denham?” Charlotte quietly asked, as you flopped back against the covers. A tear slipped down your cheeks, confirming everything.
“The right one is out there for you, Y/N. I just know it. You are wonderful, kind and a good friend.” You smiled up at her, eyes brimming with more tears at hearing such lovely words about you. “Thank you. And… thank you for saving my life.”
Your companions both smiled, Charlotte giving your hand a squeeze before they both moved towards the door. “You need to get your rest, the doctor will be here soon.” They shut the door behind them, and you settled back into the pillows. A hopeful little smile present despite everything. The encouragement was just what you needed.
