can you talk about aroace freemercy :D?

Freemercy being aroace is an important part of the character if you want to view him as a real guy and not an ingame avatar and want to keep his odd moral compass intact. It is intertwined with his personality and worldview. ESSAY INBOUND.

Freemercy is detached from the world. There is good or there is bad. There are people to save and there are enemies. Nuance and shades of gray are often lost on him. Can the concept of a savior love? Can a self-made lethal weapon be held without cutting the skin? Can a man so focused on saving what's good and exterminating what's not stop to smell the roses? Does he actually care about anyone, or is this simply an obligation to him? What drives him, drives his morals? He is not really a healer. His hands that have tended wounds could have also been the cause of the wounds. He will shoot someone or break a bone if it meant physically stopping them if it would keep them alive. Freemercy is a bundle of strange impulses and uncomfortable truths masquerading as an average man. After all, he laughs, jokes, can hold a conversation, has a calm, put together demeanor... but don't be fooled.

His rules and some thoughts behind them

1. Save as many of his own as possible (us versus them mentality. what qualifies as his own? Scientists? Civillians? or... non-Enemies?)

2. Remove as many Enemies as possible (Enemies, capitalized. He has enemies. People and things who are dangerous, or even have the potential to be dangerous. He goes as far as to kill leaches in the water. Where is the line? Remember: he is not merciful)

3. Remove Hazards if Possible (nothing to really overanalyze with this one, hazards was defined as things that could kill people)

So, when you take him out of his element, out of danger, his mind will concoct it. He's not exactly a man with many hobbies. He's selfless --- too selfless. Selfless to the point it wraps back around into selfharm (see: grenade jumping). He fills the Freemercy shaped hole in his life by doing good, by being kind, by being attentive. And he does it by saving lives, too. Present him with the trolly problem and if he is certain he cannot stop the trolley, he will flip the lever (even if he knew the person tied to the track), and the only thing he'd care about is he failed to save everyone, not that he knew the person on the track. (And then even then, he can't linger for too long. He has people to save)

People are goals to him. Keep them safe; and when that can't be done, keep them alive. And threats are to be sought out and eliminated. He is too busy saving and obsessing. No one person is more important to him than another. They are people, and they are either good or bad. Freemercy will hurt himself or others for the greater good, and that includes anyone "close" to him. And... he's aroace (and you could even say aplatonic if you want too aswell)! It fits him well. He reminds me of when Data fron star trek next generation tries to be in a relationship: Freemercy isn't mean and he might try, but the concept of intimacy is alien to him, and he doesn't "feel" the right things to be able to engage with it. He cannot prioritize a life, especially one that's not in danger. It's hard enough to keep friends. The only reason he has any is because the other Freemen HAVE to associate with him. He's deeply misguided and sacrificial to a fault, and that can be uncomfortable to be around.

But it's important to note he doesn't see the need to try and change how he operates. He doesn't feel it his burden to save others, it's more like his duty. It's a job he does and does well. And it works! And as long as he's saving people (his self worth is determined on how many people he saves), then he's doing well! He's in his element as the savior of humanity, and being a savior doesn't mean you need to have the ability to love. And... he doesn't.

little bonus:

I like drawing Freemercy with snakes. I've usually only done one, but he has two! A black snake and a white snake. These have multiple meanings and were given to him for symbolic reasons, and one of those reasons is aroace! The black snake is the Asexual ring and the white snake is the Aromantic ring. Just a little fun . smiles.

S TIER

felix (felix's mind) felix is My Special Little Guy so this goes without saying. i hate him and want him to suffer and i love him and would gently kiss him on the forehead and tuck him into bed

cicero (google translate edition/It's Half life) cicero (and google translate edition as a whole) fills me with unmatched joyous whimsy. silliness is the most kissable quality a character can have, and cicero possesses unbridled unmatched silliness.

A TIER

freemercy (saving every scientist) i love challenge runs with arbitrary restrictions and freemercy is the embodiment of one with the bonus that you can extrapolate the very convoluted stance on morality they would have if they were an actual living person.

og freeman (half-life) no one does it quite like gordon freeman regular edition with his inexplicably radioactive green eyes

B TIER

info_player_start (half-life dev tools) info_player_start makes me feel almost the same things as og gordon freeman. they are both just so person standing emoji to me and i like that in a character.

feetman (HLVRAI) hlvrai was the first half-life media i consumed and i had some huge gender stuff entangled with hlvrai's gordon so i hold a great deal of leftover affection for him.

loverboy (Y2KVR) i am in the middle of reading y2kvr as i'm typing this, so loverboy/gordon b freeman is fresh in my mind. his smoochability seems pretty obvious. im wary of the fact that he doesn't seem to have much autonomy but. he seems happy, at least?

john freeman (HL:FLC) he has a motorcycle and if you haven't seen it you just gotta. he has a kind soul and i want nice things to happen to him

C TIER

gorgeous (gorgeous freeman—be advised, source is NSFW) lot of people have put gorgeous low on their tierlists because he scares them. NOT ME! but i do think it's incredibly aroace and would most likely not be that enthused about a kiss. instead of kissing gorgeous i would simply sit down and truly listen.

freemind (freeman's mind) this fucker would bite me no hesitation. i am sympathetic to the freemind fuckers of the world but he does canonically get tased on dates. that being said, several points for knowing the words to modern major general

freebine (HL:FLC) full life consequences was a bit of a fever dream to me and he did not have much screen time. i hold no resentment towards him but no passion either.

D TIER

freerun (speedrunning) i respect him as a speedrunner but that doesn't mean he's smoochable. this guy doesn't have a second to lose, he has to make it through the next three days in under a half an hour. in order to kiss him i have to CATCH him and realistically that is just not happening. might also kill me if it saved time

greeman (make your time) another one who honestly just would not have time for me. also possesses less technical skill than a dedicated speedrunner so i respect him less (silly)

Which Freeman in the Freemanverse is the most smoochable?

Sorry it took a while Hal, but I do have a list that I completely forgor, so I’m doing this on the spot. (All of this would be platonic like “kiss the homies goodnight” kiss btw)

1: Freemercy (from saving all the scientists): he takes care of his hygiene, unlike almost every other Freeman on here. While I don’t particularly enjoy this Freeman, since I’ve never consumed the content he’s from, I will leave him up here bc it is just the most sane option for number one, but he and Cicero are basically tied.

2: Cicero: He baby, would 100% give him a little kiss goodnight if he wanted it.

3: Doc (Tales of the Mad Scientist by Bimothra on AO3, go read it!): he’s kinda crazy, but he is such a vibe and I love him dearly even thought I just read his fic yesterday

4: Gordon B. (From Y2KVR by Y2K Electronics right here on Tumblr!): he’s such a nice guy, I love him. Also takes care of his hygiene.

5: Freebird (from my AU that Tumblr has yet to know of): I’d more likely give him a hug, poor anxiety boy needs it. But I also have bias bc like I made him so he’s going to be high up in the list

6: Feetman (HLVRAI): Idk I’m starting to get into more neutral territory HES just higher up bc like idk Id have him over a the people further down on the list.

7: Swap Gordon (Half Life VR but the Roles are Swapped, also by Bimothra): He’s gay, I know, and he would 100% hunt me down bc I act suspicious all the time, also I’m in the middle of his fic rn (taking a little break bc my brain is running wild with creativity)

8: OG Freeman: I think he would hurt me. Not because I think he’s like a bitch or mean or anything it’s just the vibes. Idk I pitch a fight with everyone I can unless I have a very special spot for them in my heart (see: Cicero, Doc)

9: Freemind (from Freeman’s Mind): Ok, tumblr, this is the first you’re hearing of this, but I can and have killed multiple Freeminds in the back of Denny’s. I think most all Freeminds know me as a menace and will kill me on site. The only version of Freemind I know who would even tolerate it is mine because he knows I could kill him. If I didn’t have such a strong “cute aggression” towards Mind, he’d be higher on the list, but I want to rip him apart with my teeth like a dogtoy more than I want to kiss him.

10: Loverboy (Y2KVR by Y2K Electronics right here at home! On tumblr!): He kinda scares me. He’s got a cute design and all, but idk just vibes man

11: Gorgeous (From Gorgeous Freeman): I have never consumed his related content, but he ALSO scares me, for much more tangible reasons than Loverboy. Idk I get that he isn’t as bad in his source material (I see you Prinna) but he still scares me just as much as I am scared to watch Gorgeous Freeman.

Greeman (from a series DaFaqBOOM made that I forgot the name of them): I also think he would hurt me! I’d love to get into a friendly fistfight with him, but kiss him? Not so much

John Freeman from Half Life Full Consequences: Would kiss. He’s such a little guy. He fought god and won. Idk I love his chaotic energy.

and how my first time ever seeing gameplay outside hlvrai was from my friend streaming on discord where he somehow proceeded to have every single guard ("MY BOYFRIEND HE KEEPS FUCKING DYING...") die to a turret
