Omg I like to think im this type of writer! In one of my fics (fandom Children of the Whales), which takes place at a point in history where the world is very quickly turned into an ocean of sand (long story) and the main plot takes place over 1000 years later. So we dont know much about it. But from the very limited snapshots we get, i was able to determine A.) A very rough outline of the geography of the old world, and how it got to be the new one (figure the creatures who destroyed the world, which for simplicity are like dune sandworms but they make the sand too, dont care much for open ocean since they feed on human life, so the rough outline of the water oceans give us a rough outline of the edges of the world. Travel time by characters in canon can give a scale probably accurate to power of 2 or 3) B.) How a mere 250 odd creatures turned the old world into a contiguous sea with few islands (one island that shows up in canon has significant fossils from these "sandworms" which they mine and use as an energy source. This island also has started to face severe erosion in recent years. In addition, mobile islands with living "sandworms" trapped inside crumble to dust when the creatures die. So figure these creatures maybe have some stabalizing-destabilizing power, so they carved wide, crisscrossing channels of sand through the land, and then over the next few years the land around crumbled into it, save where there were exceptional circumstances, eg a dead "sandworm", a large enough tel/ruin, or some sort of additive process like volcanism, leading to the modern contiguous sea. Notably, the corners, far away from where the creatures arrived, have larger and more common islands, so perhaps they never reached that far into those areas before dying off) C) a rough picture of the technology of the old world (from the glimpse we see it seems like the place we see has modern to slight future technology, having equivalents of the internet, external storage devices, warplanes, and modern infrastructure. Nonetheless, severe conflict exists elsewhere, indicating that it is likely similar to our world where some countries have peace and relative prosperity for most, others it is limited to fewer people, so i felt comfortable having my protagonist be from a rural, equivalent of "third world" country with heavy emphasis on tradition, taking inspiration from Bhutan) D) how the lore of specific locales might exist in the old world and translate into the new one, both in short and long term (i cant say much bc spoilers, but @piece-of-cheese Kafemarvo and his tribe are going to Kivotos! By summer hopefully! Im slowly getting the motivation to rewrite that lost chapter and a half! Also, this is the short version of the extended authors notes i promised u and never wrote) and E) probably some more stuff im forgetting.

Its my favorite way to engage with the source material, and always has been! The first fanfic i seriously considered writing (but never did lol) was for the Codex Alera series, i wanted to do a 30 uears later sort of thing where after the empire stabilized, they go and eliminate the remaining vord in Canim, and while there, theres room to explore some things-how have the vord changed over 30 years? Are there any surving canim, perhaps from the nations that arent represented in the story? What do they think about Alerans, and how have they survived? Can the Icemen and Marat form permanent allies? How would getting an entire nation over centuries of prejudice work? So much fun to think about. Also like seriously where did the Marat come from. Theyve encountered vord in the past and were displaced but the vord never caught up, and they can very quickly turn a continent over. My theory is that there are other continents elsewhere, since the climate range over the continent we see is roughly subarctic north to tropical south, so maybe their original home was on another continent in the unknown southern hemisphere, since the vord dont seem to be able to cross the ocean on their own

One under-appreciated breed of fic writer are the ones who hyperfocus on logistics to the exclusion of all canon shortcuts, and thus usually strike upon an awesome way to flesh out the worldbuilding or characters.

Like, I’m not necessarily talking realism here since often it’s still pretty far from realistic, but more like, “someone has to be running spies in this fantasy kingdom, and we’ve seen the whole royal court, so which background character is it? How does that change these three major interactions?” Or “real life historical nobility did in fact have some things to do that were like jobs, how does this human disaster cope with running an estate?” Or “there’s no reason for a sci-fi robot detective to know how to whitewater kayak, where’d she learn?” Or “if this guy is serving the emperor directly he has to be way high up in the space empire servant hierarchy, why is he doing this menial task for someone else? What’s his motive? Does he perhaps have the secret space telepathy?”

Anyway I’m always DELIGHTED to find a fic or writer who asks these questions because the fics themselves are universally bangers.

Beauty - What do they admire about their s/o? What do they think is beautiful about them?

Dante loves Panam’s energy, her honesty and the way she stays true to herself. Her passion for freedom, to not bend down to the system and the dedication she has for the Aldecaldos/the people she cares about is basically what craved that love arrow so deeply in his heart.

Physically speaking, he thinks every inch of her is beautiful, but he’s admittedly pretty partial towards her freckles and eyes. ;)

Panam, as cliché it might be, sees beauty past the monster. She loves his selflessness, his loyalty, and his dedication/diligence towards people. She admires that someone with his upbringing still found a way to use it only when it's due, and that he didn't let it harden his interior, and that he's not ashamed to display that part of him. That unlike many people she met in NC, he cares about what's important - he saved her from leaving her family after all, and they didn't even know each other that well by then.

And physically... he does have great thighs and lovely wide shoulders.

Nicknames - What do they call their s/o?

Most of the time, Dante calls her just “Pan”. If he’s being sappy, “my love”. But he also uses an array of pet names in bulgarian (“mila” = “dear”) and turkish (“canim” = “my soul”).

Panam goes by the infamous “V” 95% of the time. She will sometimes uses “big boy” when being cheeky, most likely teasing him, and has picked up the habit of calling him “city boy” with Mitch and Cass when she wants to make fun of him over something city/nomad related.

2) Kaz: He is nice in his own ways and i think he truly cares for the people he likes. He is cool and such but he is little bit young for my liking😂 5/10

3) Mal: Once again a bff material😂 He is very trustworthy and he would come to save you no matter what. Apparence wise not my type at all and again young… 3/10

Book #22 of 2020

First Lord’s Fury by Jim Butcher Book #6 of The Codex Alera Series

The Codex Alera series has become one of my all time favorite book series. Now that I’ve finished the final book, I’m both elated by the storytelling I’ve experienced and super sad to know there aren’t any books left. I found the way Butcher created this marvelous series absolutely delightful and enchanting, even if it started out as a dare. The world building is incredible, the character development is fantastic, and the story is so well done that it makes the books hard to put down. I have a feeling at some point I will go back and reread this series, that’s how much I absolutely loved it.

In the final book, all of Alera’s hopes for survival hinge on the characters we have come to love. From Count Bernard and Countess Amara, coming in clutch with the garrison they’ve built in the Calderon to Tavi coming home from Canea with troops and wits to catch the Vord Queen, each character had a role to play in the final moments that would determine the fate of their world. And better yet, because the story brought us back to the Calderon Valley, it not only was a homecoming for Tavi, but for the reader as we even get to visit Septimus’ grave site, where the adventure first began so many books ago. One of the things that I enjoyed the most was how high the stakes were, where even some of our favorite characters were brutally caught up in the fight, like Maximus, Crassus, and Ehren, but the ending didn’t devolve like many books into just killing off of our favorites because it made things more dramatic. Everyone fought hard. Everyone took risks. And in the end, the themes that have been in the books since the beginning, were what wins the day.

That was exciting too. Because what a changed Alera we came back to in our adventure to defeat the vord and that was exciting. The enemies of the people of Alera, now are their allies. Beginning with the Marat who proudly stand with Bernard to save the Calderon Valley. The Canim, who while tensely fight along the Alerans now that they had to evacuate from their homeworld. And even the Icemen have stopped their years of fighting at Antillus, thanks to Isana’s efforts in the last book. You would think that this powerhouse of military talents would be enough to take down the Vord queen, but surprisingly, she proved to be much stronger and tougher than the ones met previously in the books, which was a great addition to making the struggle and the war felt as intense as it was supposed to. Plus thanks to the efforts of every ally coming together, a stronger Alera can be reborn.

And that was the best part. Tavi grew up as just a sheppard and stable boy in his uncle’s steadholt. No furies, no innate strength, but a wit like no other. And through his struggles to overcome the cards he’s dealt, he learns how to treat people and creatures decently, condemning slavery, allying himself with Varg, and finding peace and happiness in Kitai, no matter how outrageous their relationship is. (Plus the endless flirt off in this book is hilarious and a great relief during the more tense parts of the novel). It’s because of this and the respect that he’s earned with his mad ideas, that prove that Tavi truly is meant to be a great First Lord and bring about real change to Alera. I love that in this story, those values and those ideals weren’t lost as Tavi grew and changed, growing his skills and challenging him through the six books. It’s what makes his character so amazing. Even more so when the truth finally comes out about Valiar Marcus’s true identity. To forgive and then still trust the man that betrayed you, valuing how much he did prove his loyalty to you in the end, is such a crucial storyline and frankly something people nowadays could stand to relearn.

Again, I love, love, love this series and highly recommend it to anyone! Now time to collect the paper copies, since I read these all digitally.

Oh god. Oh no. The LONGEST LIST…

The Historical Preservation Society of Fandolin - My first ever dnd party playing Lost Mines of Phandelver! This was a bunch of years ago and I still have very very fond memories. We got our name by a scheme that managed to get us a 1v1 fight with a necromancer and then later an invitation to see some bugbears but that turned out less good. Comprised of Flint the Dwarven Cleric who 100% started a table-wide superstition of warhammers never hitting their targets, Taris the Half-Orc Paladin noble who originated the scheme, Tilwynn Syrr (Mr. Sir)- my wood elf rogue- who continued the scheme and butted heads with Taris repeatedly, and Eileer- a wood-elf beastmaster ranger who we called Grandma for her age and general personality. It was a wild few months.

Ghostbusters - A hard-scrabble group of idiots fight off supernatural threats and actual cannibal Shia LeBouff in the Magic The Gathering setting of Innestrad. The first campaign my girlfriend and I got to play together, and her first campaign! Comprised of her Ness (a Hunter Ranger with RIDICULOUS damage output), my Vermillion Kade (assassin and group dad), a Fighter that died to a Shambling Mound and came back as a Bagpiping Bard whose names elude me, Nessnemo (Nemo for clarity- a barbarian whose outfit consisted of primarily straps and little else), and Anders (A druid who caused the tablewide joke of ‘Bear in a Banquethall’ whenever players do something Very Ill-Advised because they missed a detail of description). We also saw a character named Chrodechild in this game while I took over for a Birthday Two-shot DMing stint.

OG Sendra - The first attempt at a full-length campaign. Comprised of Chrodechild the enchantress that eventually face-heel-turned into a villain, Lorelai Elffei the thief from a town of children who died and came back, Nemo (once more, but tiefling this time), Eseka the Halfling Monk/Bard performer in a circus (I THINK to melil, actually) who died and was restored, and Feverfew- the Drow Warlock of the Archfey.It had a pretty high character-swap-and-death rate. Feverfew the warlock died and became Patrin the Dragonborn Paladin who was then ALSO killed, and Kanseif the Human Barbarian Warrior Princess came about to replace him. Chrodechild turned evil and was replaced with Rhadha the crippled tiefling warlock who had made a deal with hags and had a long contract full of stipulations. Brill had to depart after character moments occurred and came back as Sylvienne Ghost- an Aasimar druid and Therapy Dog. There were further character swaps later on, but by the time they occurred the campaign had begun to grind to a halt.

Shards of the Past - A campaign run by a friend. The party was gathering the broken fragments of a rod of Manticores to fight back against the northern Empire. We were contracted by the queen to do so and BOY we sucked at it but we sure did win the war! A human paladin (whose name escapes me) with a lion-steed named Balthazar, Kestral the human Ranger-assassin (who had bird-themed names for her whole family it was rad), and my gnome Wizard Sullivan Orren du Ghislain-Ameritte III, who slowly descended towards lawful evil as the game progressed. It was a WILD romp. 

ThreaTTT - My second stab at DMing! The players awoke in prison after a night of wildly out-of-hand carousing and had to pay off their debt to society in service to Drann’s public. Mostly monster hunting and character-driven, the first introduction of The Timeless and Sliver of Moon! Party consisted of Tor (half-elf half-dwarf bard who was locked in an endless one-sided rivalry with Fortesque D’artigan- another half-elven bard), Risc Taxis (an assassin from the Talons, the southern Thieves and Assassin’s guild in Sendra, and an addict to Celadon- a opiate that stains fingers blue), and Atonement/Toni- an Aasimar Archfey warlock who was fleeing an engagement and was beholden to the whims of her 12 year old patron. They more or less made a thrash metal band by level 5, and Cera- a merfolk enchantress prostitute- joined up with them after a trip to the Stormlashed Sea. Her name didn’t fit the scheme, but she was loads of fun.

Pile of Idiots/Fortune’s Favor/Dumb Luck - You know this one, Muffin. ;P Comprised of a Fireball-Happy Endlessly-Curious sorcerer, an Extra As Shit 4 Elements Monk, the Queen of the Sea herself, The Worlds Best Bard, Smol Druid with Smol Doggo frond, and Beefest Lizard Tank, these idiots try and save the world- or at least get by.

Trees Beneath the Seas - A campaign that got very away from us, and where Moon received most of his character development. It was a huge party, which I think detracted a bit from the potential RP fun, but I got to be RECKLESS. We had Damon Pyre the Half-Elf-Half-Dragon Sorcerer, Durieal Durnam the OP monk that was killed by the weapon he carried, Saneva Amailo the hexblade warlock of Garagos and certified Edgelord Supreme, Quv the gnome-turned-elf rogue that left and whose player came back with Rue the Pumpkin Queen the human druid, Amaya Arissius the wood-elf Horizon Walker Ranger (who died and was reincarnated as a human), Verath the Dragonborn bard, Persephone O’Dougal the Canim forge cleric, Braugen Rowcron the dwarf barbarian who came back later as Satsuss the yuan-ti artificer, Arlow Rathers the paladin of Illmater and best baker the world has ever seen, Waruk Flamesong the half-orc wizard/cleric who sank the world, and finally Sliver of Moon who robbed, lied, and smooth-talked his way into and out of worlds of trouble as a swashbuckling rogue-fighter-paladin-sorcerer (we got to lvl 30 shit got WEIRD).

Harder Than We Thought - Thrush’s game! We played on the continent of Sivaan- slowly coming under siege by a power called The Parody that wanted to make the whole world just a liiiiiiiittle more interesting. Evelynn Mercado (Parsippany Olapieros) the half-elf blade-bard with ten tons of swagger in a ten ounce body who was looking for her father and making her own name in the world, Thrush Marigold the endlessly sunny sun-soul monk who was learning about his tiefling heritage while looking for his mother, Sir Tim the Halfling Hero For Hire Paladin who was making his tiefling lover and his son proud, Dune the bloodhunter with a Big Problem with hags, ‘The’ Wothe the more traditional halfling bard who was potentially about to be Thrush’s uncle by marriage, Perryn the Air Genasi Beastmaster Ranger and prankmaster general, and a dragonborn sorcerer I cannot recall the name of with terrible eyesight.

Punk! - A portal-fantasy run by our Innestrad DM, with a fantastic set up where he said he had to take a call during our session 0 and walked out. We then all got messages at the table saying he’d been replaced and to not trust him, and when he came back his whole body language was changed and then ‘sucked us into a portal’ via his tome of handbooks he got rebound into one HUGE book. We all played ourselves but better, and it was wild.

Umber Wilds/Aspiring Cryptids - One I’m currently running on mondays! A group of adventurers Doing Their Best. Audhilde Stoneforger is the Eldritch Knight and Battle Goddess who can leap up to 170 feet because I’ve broken my own will. Larken Delmare is the human shadow sorcerer who used to be an elf and came back wrong, she’s got ties to the first lands of Thielle and is dealing with Coming Back Wrong as best she can. Yseult Brighton is a water-genasi grave cleric with both Selune and Shar claiming portions of her soul, she’s been dubbed the World’s Okayest Cleric and is basically a fishbowl made of friendship. Lastly there’s Ekaterina Sheralova, a drow Gloomstaker Ranger with the most flamboyant fashion and cat-like personality whose family is probably going to wind up killing her or trying to.

17. What are some house rules that your group has?

BIG CRITS! You max your primary damage die and then roll the second, so you’re always hitting big when you get that nat 20! I have to beef so much health because of this.

Flanking - Instituted around the In-Person table: when you flank you get a +2 to hit, not advantage. It’s less OP that way.

29. Do you prefer RP heavy sessions or combat sessions?

Usually RP heavy sessions are my favorite thing, but sometimes you just want to hit something. XD I’ve found I really like a healthy dose of both, but I love it when the combat functions to fuel RP, so RP is probs my more favorite kind.

30. Are your players diplomatic or murder hobos?

They’ve trended more diplomatic! I’m grateful for it, and it’s neat seeing what pushes characters into ‘murder’ when they start out with diplomacy.

31. What is your favorite class? Favorite race?

Oh golly, probably Rogue or Paladin for favorite class, but Bard is up there too. I love versatility, and Rogue and Bard are skill monkey classes that are super fun. Paladin’s whole ‘strength from your belief in an ideal’ is also hella fun tho, I like it when paladins draw power from belief not in a god, but in a principle that guides them. Favorite race is harder, I don’t really have a favorite- but I know I dislike playing as Dragonborn, Aarakokra, and Lizardfolk personally. They’re just not for me, I think.

Selim's unexpected return made everyone in Kara's family doubt. Yes, their father sometimes appeared in Izmir and it was a maximum of a day. But now he's brought some guy with him and is staying here to live?

Leaving the house, Cenk found Yağmur in the doorway on a ladder with a light bulb in his hands:

— Canim, I said I would change the light bulb. — You've been saying this for 2 weeks. Do you think I can't fix our lights?, - Cenk grinned and looked at his sister. — I'm sure you can build a house if you set yourself such a goal, - they laughed. After the girl's manipulations, the light bulb lit up and she looked at her older brother with a smile. — And you still doubted, - the man raised his hands in defeat.

Selim brought his ward to one of the dinners and Cenk saw him talking to Yağmur. Cenk has never been against Yağmur's suitors, but he had a premonition, you know? He was afraid that Akgün would hurt Yağmur and it would leave a big mark on her heart.

Cenk looked at Akgün for a long time and could not understand why his face was familiar to him?

One day, when Yağmur and Naz ran away to a party and for some magical reason, Akgün was there. Yağmur got into a shootout, where she was saved by a guy. Cenk was the first to arrive at the hospital and had already started threatening Akgün when his sister stopped him.

— You understand that there is always something going on with you next to this guy. I don't want to see him around. — When did you start meddling in my personal life? — When did you start getting into hospitals because of this life! — Cenk, I understand everything, but I'm fine and you don't have the right to decide with whom I communicate! — I was scared, - he looked into the eyes of his sister, whom he was ready to cover with his own body so that she would not get hurt. — Sorry, abim.

After a couple of days of Selim's stay with his family, they gathered a general meeting. Cenk was late and came when his brother and sister were alone at the table.

— What did I miss? — Anne and baba are getting divorced, - Altay said only.

Day 38. Clearwater, BC to Riske Valley in the Cariboo, BC. 181 miles.

A working day to get me the two days of trail riding that will be the finale to this trip. Wildlife though!

I have been told by Chuck to, at least, see one waterfall and after a cup of tea I get up the 8 miles to Spahats Falls. It's a single fall out of a cleft and pool mid cliff. Quite special and accessible by a short path. There's already quite a lot of activity and anxious about leaving my bike in this tourist trap I ride it down to the viewing platform past surprised fall gazers. A bit of naughtiness in the morning.

I have a relatively short and easy day ahead with some road work after the first 60 miles so I know I have time for breakfast at The Strawberry Moose. It's a strange one of fruit and oatmeal with a bowl of breakfast ingredients congealed in egg and cooked in a microwave. Anyway the place is small but popular and people are sharing tales of their hikes to Clearwater from Jasper across the Purcells. A Dutch couple stop to chat as I replace the batteries in my Spot. They like the hills in BC!

It has begun to spit with rain, not heavily and it's not cold. Dressed in my waterproof gear I'm warm. The trail starts immediately and although it's mostly logging tracks following route 81there are some shortcuts put in through more overgrown trails. These are a nice break and need some care. There are some mossy bits of dirt that have the bike and I dancing like Bambi on ice. I am careful and slow.

The trail is coming to an end and the km. markers are counting down to the teens when in short succession I see a mule deer, a coyote and a black bear.

The mule deer does a clumsy turn and attempts a few half hearted leaps before giving me one scathing look and then ambling off into the bush.

The coyote does what they do, running full pelt across the road whilst looking at me.

The bear isn't full grown but has left it's mother. It's caught out in the middle of a wide trail. It does a double take whilst deciding which side to escape to and then gallops to the right.

Although I am seconds behind each of their escape manouvers there is never any sight of them in the bush as I go past.

The trail ends at Canim Lake and after 60 miles I am ready to sit and at least grab a coffee. There is more; 'subs' and 'sweets'. I sit with the owner in his office next to his comprehensive array of video feeds from the post office, the store and the perimeter. I have noticed that this sort of care, (or fear) is associated with people who don't trust folks. Robert has Fox News on and as it runs over the familiar themes of Obama bad, Trump good Robert shares his views on migration. It's the usual weak argument about 'they are taking jobs and using up services' as though both of these are finite commodities rather than things that people both create and provide. I have a go at saying that migrants are the tax paying doctors, teachers and solicitors of the future that will walk into his store as vacationers but he's moved on to the problems of officialdom, red tape and the barriers they are putting up to his land sale. It's an uncomfortable lunch but at the end he tells me he's enjoyed my company and wants to shake my hand. I get cell service in the next village, at the junction to 100 mile house and talk to home. Cats are unwell and there's a chase on to feed them antibiotics and yogurt. I am in my mud splattered waterproofs outside a gas station and C is in her running gear in the lounge. I know where I would rather be just now but I have to ride on down the road through the scrubby little ranches and low hills alongside the Canim-Hendrix Road.

The road emerges at 100 Mile House which in turn spawns 103 Mile Road, 108 Mile Ranch, 111 Mile Lumber and so on until mile 135 seems far enough away to stop it.

The rain comes down more heavily for a while and I stop, more to stave off the sleepiness that is coming over me from a heavy lunch and the monotony of the road.

I look ahead and I have 30 minutes to do to get to Williams Lake. I knuckle down to the task, sing songs in my head and note that not all of BC is the idyllic landscape I have seen to date. Williams Lake is no Banff either so I look for lodging close to tomorrow's trail head at Riske Creek. There is one spot, Chilcotin Lodge and they have a vacancy for a little more than I usually pay but with breakfast and dinner. When I arrive, apart from family, I am the only guest.

I get help with my bags which I appreciate and as they are brushed free of trail dirt I head off to get gas from the Toosey Band's gas station and store a couple of miles down the road and a gravel trail off it. There's a small cluster of houses all with rusting cars outside. The store is grey breeze block and the forecourt dusty. Chilcotin Lodge is a log lodge built in 1940 by the American owner of the Piggly Wiggly chain. It's had a chequered history since then as Kurt the owner tells me. He's had it for 16 months and tells of the fight he and his son Chris had last year over three days to save it from the wildfires.

Dinner is shared with family, baked stuffed squash followed by fresh fruit platter, a much better diet than the lunch which I find has also given me the runs, perhaps right wingers don't wash their hands?

I sit next to the log fire and the best place for the internet/Wi-fi to work on my blog. Chris, the 24 year old son is playing piano, a medley. He comes to stoke the fire and shares his pictures and videos from the fire. They are astonishing. The noise, the wind, the spontaneous combustion of whole trees is awe inspiring. They worked so hard to save their home and business and it was very nearly lost. Despite this they kept up the humour, treating the water reservoir as a swimming pool.

Kurt's 80 year old father, David, still a pilot of his self built aeroplanes, arrives and I go to bed.

Most, if not all, are Rated M. So be warned that almost all of them contain smut/adult content of some kind. I’m trying to branch out and read things that don’t contain smut but it’s a little challenging. I like steamy reads.

Chapter 40: Epilogue

Seventeen Years Later

         It has been some time since I’ve looked at this. Perusing it now, it has become painfully obvious that I set out to write a personal account of the Vord War and wound up writing a memoir. Not necessarily a bad thing from a historical perspective. All too often the personal feelings and motivations of historical figures do not survive. At least I have left an account of my own thoughts and feelings during these momentous events for posterity. Octavian frequently reminds us that there is another Vord Queen in Canea and she will come to Alera someday. I intend to do my part to ensure Alera will be ready. This account will serve as a warning.

         The new Alera has in many ways exceeded expectations. Looking out my study window, I can see all of Appia laid out before me. The city was not yet as large as Alera Imperia was, but it had grown quite quickly. My new manor house had been constructed on the hill near the new citadel. It wasn’t as large as my manor in Alera Imperia had been—that manor had been a bit excessive anyway. Camilla and I had enlisted the finest architects in Aquitaine to build it and the best artists to decorate it. From my study window I can see the triumphal arch Octavian had constructed to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Vord’s defeat. I myself am featured on several of the arch’s panels. There was me doing my best to save our retreat at Ceres, my trick with the river at Alera Imperia, me becoming First Lord, our assassination attempt on the Queen, and finally me surrendering the crown to Octavian. All of this had required me to spend some time posing for the sculptors. The results were well worth it.

         Much had changed since the war ended. Octavian’s vision for a new Alera had largely become a reality. I’ve been at his side, helping to make that vision come true, just as I would’ve been at his father’s. The Canim had settled mostly in the south, with Varg becoming the new High Lord Parcia. The previous High Lord’s entire family had been wiped out in the war and Octavian saw the vacancy as an opportunity to give the Canim a position of authority. Since they were to be living in Alera now, he wanted to ensure they were given a seat at the table. The Marat could be seen throughout the Realm. A number of them had indeed settled in my lands. Most of them were there primarily to trade, but some were more permanent residents. It was certainly something of a departure from their clan-based society. I had gone out of my way to ensure they felt welcome in my lands, keeping the promise I’d made to Doroga. Those living in the city had even given my children rides on their gargants.

         My children are all nearly grown now. Thyra lives in Invidia’s old estate near the Feverthorn Jungle with her husband and children, where she spends most of her time studying the Feverthorn Jungle. I seriously considered making her my heir for a while, but she told me in no uncertain terms she had no interest in ruling Aquitaine. Neither did Phaidros, who is currently one of the highest-ranking officers in the First Aquitaine. Melitta had no interest in it either, being more interested in enjoying life as a High Lord’s daughter than in ruling. She and Camilla plan all of our social functions. That left Aurelius as my heir.

         He was a worthy choice. I began training him for it once it became apparent my three older children were all completely uninterested. He’s studying at the Academy now, alongside the Princeps Desiderius. They have known no world but the one we built after the Vord nearly destroyed Alera. Neither does my third son, Lucius, born two years after Aurelius. Both of them have befriended Desiderius, something which occurred naturally due to my family’s regular interactions with Octavian’s. Though we’ve never spoken of it openly, it is clear to me he approves of our sons’ friendship. It was Septimus and I come again in the next generation, only I was sure this time it would have a happier ending.

         Flipping through my account of the Vord War, I’ve realized it’s time to refine it into a final version and have copies made. I mean to give a copy to each of my children so they will not forget the danger posed by the Vord. Only Thyra has children of her own thus far, but it is likely the others, or at the very least Aurelius, will follow in due time. Phaidros and Aurelius are both rather popular with the younger women of the Aquitainian Citizenry and Melitta has her own circle of admirers as well. But whatever happens, I intend to see to it that the House of Aquitainus does not forget and is ready to face the Vord when the time comes.

         “Hello, Father!” Aurelius’s voice pulled my attention away from my writing. I looked up to see my son standing in the doorway. He’d grown up to be a mixture of myself and Camilla when it came to looks. He had my build and coloring, though he was not yet as tall as me. His face was Camilla’s, aside from my eyes and high cheekbones. He wore his hair long like I did, though his was straighter than mine.

         Aurelius’s eyes flicked over to the manuscript open on my desk. “Am I interrupting you?”

         I shook my head and beckoned him forward. “No, no, please come in. I always have time for my children.”

         He stepped into the room, stopping in front of my desk. My watercrafting picked up shock and excitement from him, but also an undercurrent of uncertainty. “What is it?” I asked gently. “Shouldn’t you be at the Academy right now?”

         “It’s Desi. He…” Aurelius’s voice trailed off, clearly unsure how to proceed.

         I leaned forward, encouraging him to continue. “What about Desi?”

         “He said… he told me I’m his chala,” he whispered.

         I smiled.
