Lanky's a boy, actually 😌

He's supposed to be an f5 or f6 Savannah, so 5 or 6 generations from the Serval parent. I don't believe he came from a good breeder because his owners were letting him outside and most pedigree cat breeders aren't thrilled with that idea. He was hit by a car and broke his leg and his owners couldn't afford proper care or surgical repair so they had it casted at a local ER and it um. Well the leg died so it started to rot. So he needed it amputated and they couldn't afford that either so they brought him to us to euthanize and our previous clinic cat had passed away the year prior so we were kind of looking anyway.

It's not too uncommon for animals to be brought in for euthanasia not due to life-threatening conditions but due to the owners just not being able to afford continued care. In most cases if the animal is reasonably saveable many clinics will offer a surrender option, where the owners sign over the ownership of said animal and it's adopted out to someone for the cost of whatever procedure they needed. So he was signed over to us and now he lives in the manager office building, where I get to visit him whenever I have to access the safe or cash box.

He's about 2, gets around just fine on three legs, literally bounces off the walls and makes a general nuisance of himself. He likes to bite my practice manager if he's ignored for too long and regularly harasses my financial manager during her phone calls. We're currently working on getting him a cat wheel, he has roughly a billion toys, and according to the kennel staff that feed him on days the hospital is closed he really likes divebombing them from the top of the stairs.

Anyway he's decided I'm his best friend so when I go in there he bothers me until I pick him up and carry him like a baby and let him rub his face all over my face and chest. I appear to not be allergic to him which isn't too unheard of with the wildcat hybrids. He's like. Scary smart, there's a lot of deliberate thought and intention in his movements and the way he interacts with the world. And he's also super cute and very nice, quite friendly and pleasant. A bit of a nightmare for vet care but I don't really blame him, I'm sure his leg hurt for a long time. Just imagine the pain of breaking your leg and then have it die and begin to rot while still attached to you and then a bunch of strangers keep messing with it in a high stress environment- I'd have medical ptsd from that for sure. Plus most wildcats to my knowledge are sensitive to medical stress and stress from handling and restraint, so I'm sure that doesn't help.

I love cats but I'm very allergic to them, so when my last cat Saffron died I sort of resigned myself to not having a cat again. I'm supposed to be trialing oriental shorthairs whenever the breeder I spoke to has kittens again, since they're supposed to be low-allergen, but I also don't really have time or money to add an animal to my household right now so I'm not too concerned about it currently. I don't like hybrids as a general rule (but I will never be mean to an animal even if I don't think it should exist) so despite the discovery that apparently I could have a Savannah they're not really on my list.

Last week. I'm an emotional human, okay?!

I have a fur child named Kira! She's an 11 year old f5 savannah cat.

4. What sports do you play/ have you played?

I used to competitively ski! I did both downhill racing and freestyle/park. I also used to play basketball and volleyball... actually currently trying to find a volleyball league in my city and take it back up!

5. Do you use sarcasm?

Depends! I love being sarcastic, but only with the right folx and In jest. Time and a place is key!

6. What's the first thing you notice about people?

How they interact with me and others, and their stance on the current world landscape. I'm at the point in my life where I have no patience for ignorant, selfish idiots, and want to surround myself with people who are empathetic, genuinely connect with others, curious, open-minded, and willing to critically examine their biases and challenge their worldviews.

Hazel! But it's funny... they do change colour, depending on the lighting and the colour I'm wearing.

SAVANNAH CAT

A hybrid cat breed called the Savannah was created in the latter half of the 20th century by mating a domestic cat (Felis catus) with a serval (Leptailurus catus). Usually, this combination results in large, skinny pups with the distinctively prominent ears and brown spots of the Serval.

The tall, lean frame of the Savannah makes them appear larger than they actually are. Sexe and generation have a big impact on size. Breeders have a strong financial incentive to produce F1 cats as large as possible. Some are the size of dogs and can weigh 18 kilograms or more, and in the US can fetch very high prices. Early generations are typically the largest due to the stronger genetic influence of the African serval ancestor.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES

The unusual appearance of a Savannah is a result of the presence of numerous distinctive serval traits. The tall, deeply cupped, wide, rounded, and erect ears; the lengthy body and legs; the fat, puffy noses; and the hooded eyes are some of these distinguishing characteristics. A Savannah’s hind end is frequently higher than its pronounced shoulders when it is upright. The cat has a long, slender neck and a small head that is higher than wide. Black rings adorn the short tail, which ends in a solid black point. As with other kittens, the eyes are blue in kittens, but in adults they can be green, brown, gold, or a combination of these colors.

A straight cross between a serval and a domestic cat, for instance, results in F1 cats. Which are 50% serval and have sterile males.

Generation F Due to incompatibility between the sex chromosomes of the two species and the large difference in gestation times between servals and domestic cats. Additionally, servals are notoriously fussy when it comes to partners and frequently avoid mating with domestic cats.

Savannahs often display some traits of hybrid inviability since they are hybrids. According to Haldane’s rule, male Savannahs are most frequently impacted because they are the heterogametic sex. While female Savannahs are fertile from the F1 generation onward, males are often bigger and sterile until the F5 generation or later. Breeders started observing a rise in male sterility at the F5 and F6 generations in 2011. This is most likely caused by the greater serval percentage in C and SBT cats.

5 Ways to Make Your Dogs and Cats Get Along

The conflict between cats and dogs is a known fact. It was even evident in the popular cartoon series Tom and Jerry produced by William Hannah and Joseph Barbera.

However, plenty of pet owners testify to their cats and dogs getting along quite well, despite popular beliefs. Hence, it’s possible for the two species to get along, and become good buddies.

According to pet experts at Dog Academy, they demonstrate the ability to get along only if they’ve had a previous experience of living with another species. Since both the animals communicate quite differently when it comes to expressing themselves, confusion may ensue.

Regardless, we are here to show you exactly what you can do to let the two different genera of animals live together harmoniously. So enjoy!

1. It’s Easier When They are Young

A puppy and a kitten can get along easily since they had no previous bad experiences with other species. Also, because of their young age, they will welcome anything and anybody with open arms.

As they grow up together, they will develop a deep friendship. You should consider the breed of the dog and the cat, and make sure they match size. That is because if the puppy is too big, it may harm the tiny kitten.

Moreover, playtime can get too rough for the kitten as the pup grows up. In an effort to teach the pup to respect the kitten, instead of chasing it, give it a toy to pursue.

2. Patience is the Key

Don’t expect your pooch and your kitten to be friends at first sight. They need a few days to a week to sense each other out, and get closer.

Since pets are territorial, you can’t force them to get along. They have to get to know each other at their own paces.

If they are living in the same house, they are bound to run into each other. Talk to them softly, and use toys to invite them to play together.

You can also let them meet each other from across a pet gate. Since a dog is more hyper and aggressive, don’t let it get too close to the cat.

Some pet owners prefer to leash their dogs when they are meeting cats for the first few times. It is important that you supervise when they are together at least for the first few days.

3. A Cat Needs Its Own Territory

A cat’s personality and preferences differ greatly to that of a dog. A cat needs to feel safe in her territory without having to worry about a dog wanting to be friends. This is due to its territorial nature.

Therefore, it will be your job to teach your dog to respect a cat’s boundaries. Use commands whenever you see your dog crossing its boundaries.

It’s better to let the two animals eat and sleep separately. They will learn more about each other by sniffing the scent left by the other. As they get more used to the other animal, their fears towards each other will also melt away.

In all honesty, it actually depends on the cat to accept the dog. A dog would normally accept the other animal easily, but the cat takes time to analyze the dog before fully accepting it as its family.

Some pet owners rub a towel on their dog, then let their cat smell it. Initially, the cat may not react specifically to the unfamiliar scent. When this is done a few times over, the cat relaxes to the scent.

4. Cradle the Cat When Introducing to the Dog

Once you feel like they have both sniffed each other’s presence, it’s time to let them get a little bit closer. Cradle your cat in your arms, and bring it closer to the dog so they can both see each other.

However, don’t let go of your cat, as this may frighten her. Your cat may respond in a variety of ways, while you introduce it to the dog. If it shuts away from the dog, take it slow.

They may stare at each other, and try to understand the other’s scent. But be mindful of your cat’s reactions throughout the procedure. Finally, give them both treats for taking the attempt to get along.

Furthermore, whatever you do, keep the cat in your arms ensuring it that you won’t let her go. Give the cat a chance to understand its canine family member while being held safely in your arms.

5. Give Your Cat a Place to Escape to

As you make progress by following the steps discussed below, gradually you should let your cat and dog roam around the house as they please. But you have to give your cat a place to escape to, just in case your dog becomes aggressive or clingy.

Bring a cat tree where your cat can escape to whenever it feels threatened by the dog. It can also attempt to climb up furniture in the house to stay away from the dog.

When this happens, just let it. Forcing the cat to hang out with the dog may not be your cat’s cup of tea.

Additionally, you can spay or neuter both your dog and cat, since sometimes hormones are responsible for making dogs aggressive. You should also not let your dog get close to your cat’s space, food or the litter box. Your cat won’t feel good about the situation if her personal space is invaded by the dog.
