after the flood we move as synchronized swimmers. as if my porcine gait was made for your bovine two-step. out here the water does not cleanse. it indicts. whispers to the blood marred in mississippi soil: rise up. reveals this pasture to be sacrificial altar. here they still carve their sins into our flesh like a ledger. say it’s for all our salvation. say they can still taste the atlantic in our sweat. i guess some memories they can’t breed out of you. i begged for a rainwater baptismal. but my wake was a colostrum bloodbath. still. my soul is an estuary. she fills swamps. she soothes screams. still she dances calypso in the breeze.

savannah moon ; audition
Interview Portion
when her number was called out, savannah quickly stood up and took a deep breath. since the announcement of the musical, she had practiced so much that she often found herself absent-mindedly going over her steps in her kitchen. she made her way to the stage. this had to be perfect.
Tumblr media
“What is your name and grade?”
“My name is Savannah Moon and I’m a sophomore.”
“What role are you auditioning for?”
“I’m auditioning for Charlene Digregorio: Cha-cha.”
savannah had wanted to audition for a larger role, but she knew that her chances of getting one wasn’t likely since she was a sophomore. she also didn’t want too much stress to be on her. next year, she told herself. next year she would audition for a larger role, but too many things could go wrong with being a lead.
“What makes you the right choice for this role?”
“i am also a dancer, like charlene. cha-cha and i share this passion for dance and i can express that enthusiasm in my movements onstage. she’s confident in her dancing skills and does not let irrelevant whispers from the people around her get to her. we’re similar in that way and i am confident that i can do her role justice.”
“Do you have previous theatre experience?”
“yes, i’ve been active in theatre since i was early elementary. i’m in the drama club here at northlake and have been in the previous productions since my freshman year. i attended a prestigious performing arts camp for a couple of summers in middle school, too.”
“What song will you be auditioning with?”
“trendsetter by black coast - the lucian remix.”
“Alright, go ahead.”
Performance Portion
feeling more confident just by being on the stage, savannah strode over to the accompanist at the piano. “don’t mess up,” she whispered as she handed them the sheet music. she smiles as she did so, but she was serious. the piano piece would probably be difficult to play but she did not want any mistakes on their behalf to tamper with her audition.
Hey, you, can I learn your flavour?
the pianist had started earlier than she had expected, so savannah was unnoticeably late with the first word.
she smoothly sang the next part, energy coursing through her. when she reached the mostly instrumental part of the song, she fluidly danced as she had rehearsed, time after time after time. she was completely in her essence and had momentarily forgotten about the casting directors and everyone else in the room. nearly every step and twirl was perfectly timed. she delivered each line of the song at its given time.
bullet proof, on another level...
savannah switched from blown-out dancing to more dramatic gestures and subtle dance motions as she made her way across the stage. once she neared the chorus, she gradually made her way to her initial spot on the stage. her voice rang out as she sang the chorus.
Hey trendsetter, see your fire when the strobe hits you
I, I didn't see who you came with, bet you're looking for something new
I feel the heat with you staring off across the room
I dare you, play your cards, boy
You bet I'm a trendsetter, too.
“thank you for your time,” she said, with a slight nod of the head. a confident smile spread across her face as she made her way off the stage.
