lgbtincomics Pride Month Challenge:
Day 9: Under-appreciated Character (2/4) → Evie Vee
If you guys haven’t read Toe Tag Riot yet, I highly recommend it. Great writing, great art, and top notch cameos (Andy Hurley, Gerard Way, This Good Robot, The Aquabats...). Plus, 3/4 of the band is LGBT (you can probably guess who my next 2 Under-appreciated Characters will be).

When you go into a bookstore (Moon Palace Books) to ask for gay graphic novels and the employee starts pulling book after book, telling you all about them, you know it’s a good bookstore.
Shout out to the lovely worker who was just as excited as me and made me feel safe for asking.

🌈Bloom by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganuchaeu

Since June was pride month, I decided to read books with main who were a part of the LGBT communty!
Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
"Frances Janvier spends most of her time studying. Everyone knows Aled Last as that quiet boy who gets straight As. You probably think that they are going to fall in love or something. Since he is a boy and she is a girl."
One of my favorite things about Radio Silence is that it's teenage characters are normal, relatable teens whose personalities don't feel flat or fake. It's also very refreshing to read a YA novel where there's love between the female and male main characters that is strictly and genuinely platonic. Another aspect that makes this novel appealing for someone my age is that it portrays characters who live their lives online - Francis, the main character, is a popular creator of fanart on Tumblr and only expresses this part of her identity to her closest friends.
Radio Silence is also filled with an array of LGBT characters, however, their identities are never really the main conflict of the novel. All of Alice Oseman's novels and graphic novels include diverse LGBT characters.
Bloom by Kevin Panetta & Savanna Ganuchaeu
"Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band―if he can just persuade his dad to let him quit his job at their struggling family bakery. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away over rising dough and hot ovens. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easygoing guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn’t ruin everything."
I normally don't reach for graphic novels, but I'm very glad I gave Bloom a chance! What really drew me in was the illustrations, which I thought were just lovely. I also thought it was a pretty easy read, Ari and Hector's story was a fresh take on the classic bakery/cafe AU trope we've all come to know and love.
One of my favorite things about this book was the relationship between Ari and his parents. It was nice to see an LGBT character that doesn't have a negative relationship with his parents because of he's gay - instead they just have the normal family drama. While those stories are necessary because it is a very real issue in the community, it was just refreshing to see a character go through their angsty crush feelings without their family being strained because of it.
