“A Quiet Beginning – March 1st, 1943” For the nightmare to come, March 1943 kicks off rather auspiciously – one ship sunk, and one air attack on a U-Boat. Eighty Years Ago, Today – (Monday) March 1st, 1943, 63 miles east of Porto de Sauipe, Brazil: Convoy BT-6 left Bahia, Brazil, yesterday, February 28th, and is bound for Trinidad, and then on to the United States. U-518 (IXC) can’t buy good luck if her life depended on it. Every shot is a bust – she lost 14 of her precious torpedoes as deep-runners (torpedoes that run to a lower depth than what was set, passing harmlessly under the intended target), duds, or outright misses. They aim at the American Liberty ship “SS Fitz-John Porter.” After two close misses, a third torpedo finally strikes home. The blast tears through one side of the hull and out the other. It’s a kill shot – the Porter begins to settle. Seaman First Class (1/c) Louis A. Acklen of Louisiana, US Navy, part of the “Armed Guard,” for the ship’s gun crew, is up on deck, sleeping on a hatch cover, most likely to avoid the stifling heat below decks. Tragically, the torpedo impacts directly underneath of him. In an instant, he is blasted over the side, never to be seen again. He was 22 years old. He will be Fitz-John Porter’s only fatality… all 54 of his shipmates safely escape to the boats. They are picked up by a Brazilian Navy minelayer, the “Carioca,” about two hours after abandoning ship. Transferred to a Brazilian freighter, they are safely taken to shore. 4,400 miles to the north, in the bitter North Atlantic, U-223, a Type VIIC, is jumped by an American-built Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress assigned to 59 Squadron of the Royal Air Force’s Coastal Command. Flying out of RAF Chivenor on the southwestern English coast, the “Fortress” finds U-223 and goes in for the kill. Although many U-Boats are killed in surprise air-attacks, U-223 won’t be going quietly – she throws up a hail of anti-aircraft fire, raking the Fortress as it passes by right overhead. All seven depth charges are misses, inflicting slight damage. The Fortress, shot up, turns and limps home. Just another day..and the fury is just beginning.
