Sasori of the Red Sands

In a famous description of Coronea, Xenophon recalls that the very earth had turned red--- a phrase that was probably no exaggeration... Plutarch recalled the same picture after the death of some 25,000 Macedonians pikemen at Pydna. The entire plane there, he said, was filled with corpses… Again, this seems likely. If each of the fallen men lost 1/3 of his 6 quarts of blood, either in the final moments of death or after the corpse lay in the dust, there could have been more than 10,000 gallons to soak the field.

To most shinobi who were unaffiliated with Sunagakure, Sasori of the Red Sands was just another name in the history books or bingo books. But in a culture that is as ruthless as in Sunagakure where children are /expected/ to undergo a certain numbing emotional training in order to be battle-ready--- an epithet is /earned/.

Historians debate on how many bodies and how much blood, in liters, is actually needed to soak the desert sands and turn them red. The corpse carriers (the headcanon for that sort of profession comes from an old RP friend) have an estimated body count-- but many still think this is an exaggeration.

It is not. 

Way back when, I wrote a little fanfic that does tackle a few of Sasori’s more grisly jobs before he defected from Suna if that would be of interest. Said fanfic is called Blood and Gold (with a hint of RasaSaso; tw war and some gore).

I really like 💕 for SasoRasa but SASORI would prefer feelings returned, either romantic or platonic.

Oh, but of course! :D Maybe a slow burn thread in which fulfillment is unattainable, but eventually these two always tend to come together in one way or another when we write them. The challenge will be the unrequited part. OR how about a twist on courtly love? Most of our headcanons agree that Suna culture is rather repressed emotionally, in that outward expressions of love are relatively taboo and considered a sign of weakness - so how about a twist on courtly love? An AU revolving around a long held Sunan tradition that embraces the clandestine expression of love towards another person otherwise considered unattainable. 

Correspondences would take place in coded love language, as well as gifts exchanged, and secret meetings arranged in which the parties involved may or may not ever actually see one another face to face. One’s beloved would still benefit from the intimacy of a profound emotional bond only without the physical aspect of a relationship. For Sasori and Rasa, it kind of keeps the unrequited love feel, in that they are not together, but the emotions are real and returned...and then there is always the temptation to flout tradition and make something more, to take a risk. To amp up the angst and the complexity of the plot. So many directions, and I am open to every one of them ;)

Oh ho ho... let’s go with some assorted faves of the moment, shall we? Because we all know how often this changes XD

1. JiraOroTsu - Sensory deprivation + overstimulation. Everything is more intense with stolen senses, and all vulnerability and trust gets amped up. 

2. OroSaso - Bondage. Can I see Sasori as a particularly talented and vicious rope top with an eye for artistry as well as techniques for pain? Wrangling a bratty snake? Yes I can.

3. HuaLian - Trampling. Step on him, Dianxia--literally. Also an interesting inversion to the way people would walk over statues of Xie Lian to show further disdain for him as a god. Let your greatest devotee flip that image on its head and eventually spin it into body worship or more.

4. MatchaBlossom - a good bit of verbal degradation + dirty talk. I mean, come on - part of it’s basically canon. I will forever uphold that Cherry’s got a guttermouth when behind closed doors and riled up.

5. SasoRasa - Praise kink + a very stressed Kazekage. Also, considering Sasori’s not one for giving empty praise, it’s ultra effective.

Asexuality

I headcanon Sasori as ace and not quite as interested in sexual relationships as his peers (with the exception of Yasha who I also headcanon as ace). Because this post deals with sexuality, I will be mentioning a few of my main Sas ships here too.

With childhood friends and sweethearts SasoKaru AU, they do pass a good amount of their time looking at cute boys or cute girls and probably have a crush on, say, the Kazekage with Sasori coming up with a clearly laid out plan to marry said Kazekage (bless @thatshipcat for that super cute headcanon which I love). But it becomes evident, soon enough, that a younger Sasori is mostly following Karura’s lead on who is cute and who is crush-able. When left to act by himself, he tends to fumble-- especially when he doesn’t have a list of expected outcomes.

Older Sasori tends to be a whole lot more comfortable with this. There would be no disjoint between his sexuality and that fact that he’s usually the one in pursuit of something, or someone, that is interesting (perhaps one Kazekage, perhaps two Kazekages). This part of him is barely mentioned in any conversation because he just doesn’t think it’s remotely important to anything.

Experimental phase Sasori finds that, despite his mostly neutral if-I-have-time view on sex, he enjoys both the sensation and a sort of control. To have someone at the precipice of ecstasy, no longer thinking straight, and knowing that he can push them over the edge with just a few precise strokes--- that sort of power and control can be intoxicating for Sasori. Sometimes, he doesn’t engage in sex in the traditional way and often times, he prefers not even having to wrinkle his clothes for that.

Sasori stands as another perfectly polished figurine in this dollhouse. Plastic trappings and plastic feelings. It wasn’t the place he expected to find a familiar warmth in— he wasn’t the person Sasori expected to find it with either.

Barely an hour into the party and Sasori was made keenly aware that his art was not the only thing set in display.

Shiny and new, Sasori stood there in a loose fitting cotton blouse, bishop sleeves gathering into a cuff at his wrist. The buttons of the cuff were good, like the buckles of his shoes. Black and sleek, going all the way up his waist. All wrapped up in a double breasted emerald vest that made him look like he stepped out of some historical drama.

The cravat on his neck itched, but he could not adjust it. The next guest who wanted to see the exhibit stepped forward.

Sasori pours through the missive for what feels like the seventh time. He worries a flower between his fingers: the same as any other practiced gift given to him during this ‘affair’.

This time, Rasa writes, it is real. That he desires nothing more than to run to Sasori’s arms; that it takes more and more effort to look away; that all he wants is Sasori—tradition be damned.

“Such sweet words,” he comments, picking through the clutter on his desk for ink and brush. This is nothing more than an exercise, Sasori knows. Training for real courting, suitor to be determined when it is more convenient. Soon enough, they’ll be used to charm someone else.

Rasa deserves someone softer than him. Someone who smiles more. Someone shares more, who doesn’t look over each shoulder, who is overall a more trusting and kind person. Surrounded by effigies of the damned and dying, Sasori is anything but.

I am cruel, he writes in sharp script. I am bitter and realistic. I am unsentimental and impatient; I will not wait for you.

But if you insist on carrying on, meet me tomorrow evening, where the eastern dunes touch kiss water. Be there before the moon peaks—do not be late.

He seals the letter with poison wax, fully expecting rejection.

There are rules to hidden love in Suna. Unspoken to be sure, but rules all the same, and from the moment their affair began with a hastily placed note among Sasori’s things one bright day several years ago, he’s never had cause to regret it. Finely wrought treasures in script and form speak to his heart and capture his imagination, giving Rasa cause to dream. His life may be chosen for him, a series of actions and duties planned day by day as an accident of birth and station, but at chosen intervals he can look forward to the cache of letters that appear like clockwork in their appointed place.

And he certainly leaves many of his own. He may not be as talented with words as his dear one, but he tries - he imagines that the meaning comes across.

He hopes.

Until the tenor of each letter he receives begins to change in small imperceptible ways, then seemingly veiled pleas in each missive become impossible to ignore. In public, small wayward glances of citrine eyes beseech him across balconies, courtyards, banquet halls… and Rasa tries but fails in resisting the desire to look back every time. 

When he does, those eyes have already darted away.

There would not be an issue if it were simply a look - they are peers - but Rasa knows his own heart will grasp onto such a glance, tempting him towards action. 

Even so, the next time he crosses paths with Sasori, he meets that gaze directly, only to be transfixed by need, by despair that cuts him to the core. It takes everything in him not to reach for the smaller man. Not to speak.

And so he does what convention allows. He writes. Planning to break all the rules.

Sasori would bring Karura home one day. She would find that he knew her like the back of his hand. That she could understand him-- at a touch, at a glance. And she would love him.

“Oh! Oh--” Papers, still hot from the photocopy machine, scattered on the floor. “Oh, goodness, I didn’t see you there-- I’m so so sorry,” Karura knelt down to take the papers closest to her.

“That’s alright. I can set them in order later--”

“No, no, no-- I was the one who--- let me help you,” Karura looked up at the red-haired boy she just bumped into. She flashed him a smile. Little creases at the edge of her ocean-blue eyes. Her cheeks blossomed pink roses. Her gaze lingered just long enough. Their fingers brushed when she handed him back the papers.

It was exactly like how he imagined it. It was perfect.

2021 in AO3

Kinda happy since this is the year I’ve published the most writing-wise and I want to continue this into the next year. (21 fics for 2021!) And since it’s a happy celebration, I thought it could use its own little post.

Gen Fics: I got to writing 2 Suna Gang Kid Fics (Skinned Knees and Rose-pistachio-lemon cake). One with Yasha and Gaara (Together). Two with @spycaptain’s OC Kuri (Trick or Treat and All Hallow’s Eve). A Saso centric feelings fic in Little Miracles.

SasoKaru: Obviously wrote the most on this because it’s the main cruise ship in my heart, even if it’s a tiny floater in the general sea. You got the cute ones in It will cost you, Count Down, and The Lagoon. An emotional one in All this and Heaven too. And a dark fic with Wasteland.

SasoThird: FOUR fics with SasoThird in it. Three featuring @thatshipcat’s Tenno (Suna Beach Episode, A day in the life of a familiar, and Persepolis) and one that will feature Ryozen as the Third (Kingdom Come).

SasoRasa: I have a soft spot for these two because of the way they can fit together narratively as written in the Modern AU Dollhouse and in the midst of the Third Shinobi War in Blood and Gold.

YashaAnko: I got one smutty one out in Drizzling Rain and a more Yasha-centric one in Yashin. Would need to up my game here cuz I love them ;w;

RasaKaru: I was only able to publish one (Stairwell) which means I should DEFINITELY write more of them soon.

SasoYasha: Not a ship I write often but they get Alley Cats for a funny and sweet cat-dad AU.
