LwD 2.05: An Embarrassment of Dooplers
So I was a little nervous about this one! I hadn’t heard any spoiler-spoilers, but screeners have been out for weeks now, and I’d heard a bunch of individual, vague, non-spoilery hints about (1) big character moments, on the scale of a mid-season finale even though the show’s not taking a mid-season break; and (2) an ending that would make me cry.
I guess I imagined something relatively serious and dramatic, like “No Small Parts”? This show makes me cackle with laughter and giggle with nerdy glee and “d’awww!” at heartwarming friendships every week, but it’s only ever made me cry once—and then I was impressed that they were going to get there from the wacky hijinks we saw in the brief teaser.
The lack of a cold open made me apprehensive too—in my experience, that’s typically a sign that there’s so much plot in the rest of the episode that they need that extra scene—but after ~21.5 minutes of aforementioned hijinks, I was having so much fun that I’d completely forgotten about the alleged tear-jerker at the end…
…and they were not the tears I was expecting.
I didn’t think I’d be smiling and crying!!!! That was wholesome as SHIT!!!!!
I almost can’t believe they earned that—but they totally did.
After a Mariner–Tendi episode and a Boimler–Rutherford episode, we’re back to the “usual” Season 1 pairings… except the relationships between these characters have changed since Season 1. Mariner still feels thwacked in the abandonment issues by Boimler bailing for the Titan, and Rutherford’s having a tiny little existential crisis about losing an entire year of his life.
Both of which are extremely understandable and very heavy situations—and both of those situations get resolved because everyone in them is vulnerable with each other and honest about their feelings—AND that honesty and vulnerability brings both pairs of friends closer together. Are you kidding me?? I would watch SEVENTY seasons of that shit. Put it in my veins.
Onto the notes:
So basically Dooplers are Tribbles, but for cringe comedy instead of slapstick? Ohhhhh boy.
Look at Ransom the diplomat, tossing his own fork on the floor! I like that he’s actually a pretty competent Starfleet officer, despite also being a completely ridiculous person.
Wait a second, is that—OH HOLY SHIT, THE DOOPLERS ARE VOICED BY RICHARD KIND.
It makes sense that B. Boimler would find William annoying—who likes seeing their own flaws reflected back at them? And who could be a better reflection of one’s flaws than one’s literal duplicate?—but most interesting to me is that it implies on some level, Bradward knows the stick up his butt is a flaw. (Does William?)
Why does the Cerritos model have working phasers?!?!
I’m loving hot pink as the currently en-vogue colour for “dangerous sci-fi energy” in animation (cf. almost every previous episode of this show; Into the Spider-Verse; other stuff I can’t remember right now). As a former child of the 80’s, I’m living for it… but as a former teenager of the 90’s, I can’t help but wonder if it’s going to age as poorly as the harsh neon green of The Matrix, every Borg appearance on Voyager, and like 80% of the websites I made in high school…
SKANTS! SKANTS! SKANTS!
That fake-out joke with the fly-by over the Cerritos model was in the season trailer weeks ago, and I was so enthralled by that handsome lady that the sticker coming into frame still got me good 😂😂😂
BECKY Mariner????? omg yes
Some top-quality Boimler screams in this one. Poor Jack Quaid must drink gallons of throat-coat tea when he records.
One of the great things about Star Trek to me is that you never know what you’re going to get from any random episode. A murder mystery? A road trip? A spooky thriller? A cheesy romance? Broad comedy? Body horror? Didactic political screeds shrouded in tissue-thin science-fiction metaphors? Brain and brain, what is brain??? And after this many years of watching, you’d think I’d be hard to surprise. But if I ever told you I thought I’d see a Blues Brothers–style car chase through a frickin’ shopping mall on an episode of Star Trek, I would have been straight-up lying to you. I loved it, it worked for me, my jaw was on the floor and I was clapping with joy—but I’m definitely comfortable calling this one “unexpected.”
It’s CAPTAIN SHELBY!!! And an ancient babydyke crush rose from the depths of my childhood subconscious… (Also I think her Number One is based on the original makeup—eventually deemed too complicated—for Saru? Now that’s a deep cut.)
In 20th-century Trek, you almost never got to see what was going on inside a starship from the outside. Even after they switched from physical models (where it was next to impossible on a single episode’s budget) to CGI (which was still in its infancy, still not exactly cheap, and still broadcast in SD anyway), it was a rare thrill to see any meaningful interior details in an exterior shot. Disco’s modern VFX have given us some tasty, tasty treats in that department, but nothing quite as sublime as all the pink Doopler light glittering through the Cerritos’s windows.
Mariner says she’ll take her contact Malvus down with her, and threatens that they’ll end up “in the same cell.” Malvus is a Mizarian, a species introduced in TNG’s “Allegiance,” in which Captain Picard is held in a mysterious prison with one. I think I see what you did there, McMahan?
Bartender… so hot… lesbian circuits… overloading…
The Tendi and Rutherford C-story was, well, a C-story within a 22-minute episode, so there wasn’t much to it, but the one scene that mattered actually mattered a lot. I’m ambivalent on whether they should end up romantically involved—I’d prefer they don’t, but they’ll be one of the cutest couples in Trek history if they do—and as long as they keep that pure, sweet friendship between them at the heart of whatever else happens, I’m on board.
Carol Freeman was already one of my favourite captains before this season, and she’s been steadily moving up the list. The quiet throughline about her ambition to be on a better ship has been fascinating so far, and it’s starting to actually make me feel a little conflicted: I’m of course rooting for Captain Freeman to recognize her worth, make Starfleet recognize her worth, and become the ass-kicking captain of a hero ship that she’s clearly ready to be—but that almost surely means she’d be kicking ass off-screen, because LwD isn’t about those kind of adventures, and I’d be devastated not to have Dawnn Lewis on the show every week. So I’m kind of on the edge of my seat about this one!
I had so many favourite jokes this week I put them in a separate list:
“Even the replicated water on the Titan tasted better” is a low-key brilliant dunk on people who can’t shut the fuck up about the cooler places they used to live.
“Ooooh, they have a Quark’s now! That used to just be an empty lot where teens would make mistakes!” ← That’s literally me every time I go back to where I grew up. I felt so Seen™ I almost hid under a blanket.
“I would never go down the stairs!” (evil grin) (goes up the stairs)
The “well, shit” expressions from Mariner and Boimler as their crashed car sank right into the water… which started to bubble innocuously… and then the bottles of Data bubble-bath popped up, paying off a joke I thought had already been paid off—that was the one that woke up my poor cat this week. Just exquisite timing.
“YOUR PAGH IS WEAK, AND IT DISGUSTS ME!” “I don’t even know what that is, but I don’t like your tone!”
“Okona’s in there? He’s not even Starfleet! This is outrageous!” made me shout “NO!” at the screen like I was scolding my cat for scratching furniture. (She did not wake up that time.)
Best background joke: the neon sign at the dive bar advertising FREE SHOTS & BEERS. (Get it? Because they’re on a Federation starbase? Where nobody uses money?)
And of course Quark merchandised DS9.
This wasn’t just a standout episode of Lower Decks, this was a brilliant episode of Star Trek, period. The Dooplers, though extremely silly, are nevertheless also a clever sci-fi metaphor for real and relatable personal/interpersonal issues, and an effective plot catalyst for meaningful character growth from all four of our ensigns and the captain.
The jokes were hilarious, the action was kinetic, the A-, B-, and C-plots linked up thematically, the visuals were consistently and thoroughly gorgeous, the character beats—between Mariner and Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford, Mariner and Capt. Freeman—were all genuine, heartfelt and wholesome, and the references to other Trek canon were both deep and deeply affectionate.
Only 15 episodes in, and this series knows exactly what it is, exactly what it wants to do, and knows that it can knock our socks off doing it. Mike McMahan has said in recent interviews that the back half of S2 (and the apparently almost-fully-written S3) is a straight line uphill in quality from here—which surprised me at first, because McMahan seems like a pretty chill dude who doesn’t normally brag about his own work like that.
But then the Prophets sent me a vision of my space dad Ben Sisko, who reminded me of the words of 1930’s baseball player Dizzy Dean:
“If you can do it, it ain’t bragging.”
[Thanks to cygnus-x1.net for the screenshots this week—I was too lazy to do my own.]

qb’s 2020 Anime List
[Representation of making my brain recall anything from last year]
As usual, these are ordered by whatever arbitrary mood I was in when I constructed the list. Do not cross reference this ordering with any other evaluations I may have done.
0. kiratto prichan but only after it lost all pretense of being grounded in reality
I don't want to explain why I watch this anime, but I will do it for the fans. It's the franchise people, by all rights, should make fun of me for watching instead of Precure, which is harmless; the Pretty Rhythm series is ill-advised subculture shitpost brainrot which has at least halved my IQ. PriChan had been very boring for at least a year since its premiere, but during 2020 went off the deep end in way that rekindled the unique flavor the decade-long series has traditionally had of doing the most dumbass thing every week and not letting any sort of television authority or good ideas stop it. I had fun every week once it got in the groove and remembered its roots as a dumbass crossover franchise with nothing to prove and nothing holding its stupid, fantastic ideas back. It’s always the most insane thing on TV and it never even has to try.
Also following the twitter cult that formed around a rare plushie from this show with a wide face. That was the most entertaining thing of 2020 for me.
1. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
Creatively inspiring in a year without many sources of creative inspiration, the airing of this anime mirrored my unwilling dive into learning too much about anime production than I ever meant to. Eizouken takes the sketchbook ideas of the manga and fully realizes its world into animation in a way that only Masaki Yuasa and Science Saru could pull off, while simultaneously giving rising stars in the industry their first chance at directing episodes. It's a very satisfying show to watch and if there's anything on this list that inspired me to finally just slam words on paper and get this out it was thanks to watching Eizouken at some point in my life.
The season is split into three distinct “projects” and each of these end in a such a strong climax that I have to recommend watching it 4 episodes at a time, if you are able to. Here’s an endcard by tkmiz
2. Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden
3. DECA-DENCE
I like a nice contained science fiction and this one's episode 2 hook was so shocking that I was glued to my screen until the very end. It’s not perfect, but it’s about as perfect as you could reasonably expect to get from the year 2020. The less you know going in the better so I’ll shut up but it’s a much more ambitious sci-fi than you think it is at first. It might have been a had-to-be-there serial experience, so it could be impossible to really get the hype that was around this show at the time, but I think there’s enough there to stand on its own, and just having a definitive, satisfying ending in one season is an anime rarity worth recommending by itself.
4. Toilet-bound Hanako-kun
I love looking at pictures of cryptids and Lerche paneling and this gave me both in abundance. It rides the line between telling Shonen and Shoujo stories, like many Seinen that defy easy categorization do, and I’ve always been a sucker for that. Along with the anime being drop dead gorgeous on a weekly basis, I enjoyed the lovable cast of various SUPERNATURAL DANGER BOYS and also Yashiro who provides the funniest faces and widest ankles of the whole show, despite stiff competition.
5. Talentless Nana
Came outta nowhere and exceeded expectations for a frankly kind of mediocre thriller manga by absolutely nailing the strong first episode/chapter hook, then continuing to nail it every week with smart directing. I’m obligated to pay attention to this team in the future if they're capable of making something this compelling on a limited drawing budget. (the core staff were all Heybot regulars, which either means something or doesn’t)
6. Extra Olympia Kyklos
The one-person studio that made this did not have a high bar to clear to be the best Olympic tie-in anime (the only other one I can recall is the rare media Eagle Sam which sucks complete ass) but despite the Olympics not even happening in 2020, it soldiered on, and was easily the most I laughed at anime in that year. Kyklos takes serious source material and just spices it up beyond recognition with bizarre jokes, perfect timing, and hilariously cheap original music videos at the end of every episode that wouldn’t be out of place on adult swim bumpers. Overall it’s very surprising that this was funded at all once anyone saw what it was, but I’m so glad the creator got away with it. In a way, it’s the perfect monument to this psychotic year.
7. Kakushigoto
I just think the author is funny and this is a good anime adaptation that outpaces the original, by the author's own admission/intention. 61-sensei is the best girl
All Hail The Daia Bread All Hail The Daia Bread
these were all enjoyable too:
Gal and dino
Hit in the right spot at the time, when we all needed a roommate who couldn’t catch covid
Star twinkle precure movie
I'd show this to people to introduce them to precure if not for the song and dance number at the end being kinda lame
Mewkledreamy
it’s not going to end precure but it has incredible faces
BOFURI: I don’t want to get hurt so I maxed out my defense

Star Wars Movie and TV Release Date Calendar
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The future of Star Wars is secure. The end of the Skywalker Saga didn’t mean the end of the story of the galaxy far, far away. It just meant countless new possibilities, both on the big and small screens. In fact, Disney has already announced more than a dozen live-action and animated projects that explore other corners of the Star Wars universe, from adventures starring the brave X-wing pilots and clone troopers on the front lines of countless wars to tales of bounty hunters and even the Sith. And plenty more in between!
This post is where we’ll keep track of all the upcoming Star Wars movie and TV releases as they’re announced and release dates are set. Hit the links in each entry to read articles that tell you more about what you need to know about all these new Star Wars adventures!
Stream your Star Wars favorites right here!
First up are the movies but scroll down for TV release dates…
Upcoming Star Wars Movies
Rogue Squadron
December 22, 2023
Director: Patty Jenkins
Disney confirmed during an Investors Day presentation in Dec. 2020 that the first Star Wars movie to follow The Rise of Skywalker is Rogue Squadron, a movie that “will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.”
Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins will direct, making her the first woman to helm a Star Wars movie. We’re very excited about this!
Read more about Rogue Squadron here.
Untitled Taika Waititi Star Wars Movie
TBA
Director: Taika Waititi
Writer: Taika Waititi and Krysty Wilson-Cairns
After his stint directing (and voice acting) on The Mandalorian, Taika Waititi will return for a big screen offering!
“Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and…unique,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in a statement in 2020. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”
There’s very little in the way of actual details right now, not even a release date yet, but we’ll be keeping a careful eye on this as it develops.
Untitled Kevin Feige Star Wars Movie
TBA
Writer: Michael Waldron
Marvel Cinematic Universe steward Kevin Feige has been the last decade building a multi-billion-dollar superhero blockbuster powerhouse for Disney, so it’s no surprise the House of Mouse is giving the producer a crack at its other big sci-fi franchise. Feige is developing a new Star Wars movie with Kathleen Kennedy, and Loki creator and head writer is penning the script. And that’s all we know about this sure-to-be-massive Star Wars picture.
Untitled J.D. Dillard Star Wars Movie
TBA
Director: J.D. Dillard
Writer: Matt Owens
Reports of a new Star Wars movie from Sleight director J.D. Dillard and Luke Cage writer Matt Owens first hit the internet in Feb. 2020. We don’t know much about this movie or when it’ll premiere. Could this be an exclusive Disney+ movie?
Read more about this movie here.
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy
TBA
As far as we know, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is still working on his own Star Wars trilogy. All we know about these movies is that they will take place in previously unexplored areas of the Star Wars universe, and will kick off a brand new saga of films completely unrelated to the Skywalker story. We wrote in more detail about what that might mean for the franchise right here.
On the other hand, maybe Johnson’s recent comments about what a mistake it is to pander to fans are an indication that his relationship with Disney has soured. He also happens to be working on multiple sequels for a little franchise called Knives Out. Those are probably taking up a bit of his time, no? Read more about this new Star Wars trilogy here.
Upcoming Star Wars TV Shows
After the success of The Mandalorian, it should come as no surprise that there are way more Star Wars TV series coming to Disney+ in the next few years. Here’s what you have to look forward to…
Visions
Sept. 22, 2021
Animation Studios: Kamikaze Douga, Geno Studio, Studio Colorido, Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Science Saru, and Production IG
This new anime anthology series is one of the most unique Star Wars projects yet. Lucasfilm has brought in several big Japanese animation companies to produce their own takes on the galaxy far, far away. The nine short film collected in Visions cover many different corners of the universe, from tales about the Jedi and Sith to the adventures of a cute little droid, each with its own distinct art style. Boba Fett is in there, too! More like this, please.
Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales
Oct. 1, 2021
Director: Ken Cunningham
Writer: David Shayne
Starring: Jake Green as Poe Dameron; Raphael Alejandro as Dean; Dana Snyder as Graballa the Hutt; Tony Hale as Vaneé; Christian Slater as Ren; Trevor Devall as Emperor Palpatine; and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as NI-L8
Loved last year’s Lego Star Wars Holiday Special and want more of that, please? No? Too bad. We’re getting more Lego Star Wars shenanigans this year, but this time Poe and BB-8 must confront the spooky season. The premise actually doesn’t sound all that bad: after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, Poe and his trusty droid must make an emergency landing on the volcanic planet of Mustafar, where they’ll venture deep into Darth Vader’s old castle and encounter and ancient evil that must be stopped. Could be good!
The Book of Boba Fett
Christmas 2021
Executive Producers: Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni & Robert Rodriguez
Starring: Temuera Morrison, Ming-Na Wen
Boba Fett is back and getting his own spin-off series set within the timeline of The Mandalorian. The show will also star Boba’s new partner, the deadly assassin Fennec Shand!
The Book of Boba Fett has wrapped filming and is slated to premiere in Christmas 2021. Robert Rodriguez, who directed Boba Fett’s return in The Mandalorian season 2, will exec produce alongside Favreau and Filoni.
The Mandalorian Season 3
2022
Executive Producers: Jon Favreau & Dave Filoni
Starring: Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Gina Carano, Katee Sackhoff
The Mandalorian season 3 went into pre-production in 2020 and is set to film in Fall 2021, now that work on The Book of Boba Fett is complete. That means we won’t see this one until the second half of 2022 at the earliest.
The Bad Batch Season 2
2022
Director: Brad Rau
Writers: Jennifer Corbett & Matt Michnovetz
The Bad Batch is set directly after the events of Order 66. The rise of the Empire has led to the destruction of the Jedi, and as we learned in the first action-packed season, the imminent end of the clone army. Grand Moff Tarkin wants to replace the clones with a new, more obedient human army and Clone Force 99 isn’t too happy about it. Now on the run from the new galactic order, Hunter, Tech, Wrecker, Echo, and new member Omega must find their new place in a galaxy that no longer seems to want them.
The first season ended on a massive cliffhanger that could have huge implications for storylines coming up in the live-action universe. We can’t wait to see what season 2 has in store.
Read more about The Bad Batch here.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
2022
Director: Deborah Chow
Writer: Hossein Amini, Joby Harold
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie
Ewan McGregor is finally returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a series set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. The Jedi Master has settled into his life as an exile on Tatooine, where he’s watching over Luke Skywalker from afar. Will his next adventure take him off-world or is he going to have to protect a defenseless village from raiders Toshiro Mifune style?
Here’s what we know about the plot: “The series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.”
Hayden Christensen is returning to play Vader, which is very exciting!
Andor
2022
Writer: Tony Gilroy
Starring: Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard, Denise Gough, Kyle Stoller
There’s a Rogue One spinoff series starring Rebel secret agent Cassian Andor coming to Disney+! According to the press release, “The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.” This sounds very good.
This series was set to film in early 2020, but Covid-19 pandemic delayed the show. It finally wrapped filming in August 2021.
The Acolyte
TBA
Executive Producer & Writer: Leslye Headland
Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland is developing a new series called The Acolyte, which is set during the High Republic era, a time period that predates even The Phantom Menace. The series is said to be “female-centric” and seems to be a darker Star Wars story than what we’re used to seeing on screen.
Lucasfilm describes the show as “a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” Sounds intriguing!
We have some theories as to what the show could be about here.
Ahsoka
TBA
Executive Producers: Jon Favreau & Dave Filoni
Writer: Dave Filoni
Starring: Rosario Dawson
Described as a limited series that continues the story of Ahsoka Tano after the events of The Mandalorian season 2 episode “The Jedi,” Ahsoka will likely bring the beloved hero one step closer to finding her missing Jedi friend Ezra Bridger and taking down Grand Admiral Thrawn once and for all.
Rangers of the New Republic
TBA
Executive Producers: Jon Favreau & Dave Filoni
We don’t know anything about this show except that it’s set within The Mandalorian timeline and will “intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event.” It sounds like Star Wars may be on its way to having its first big TV crossover.
That said, recent reports suggest this show’s been put on hold due to the dismissal of Gina Carano, who was said to star on the show as Republic marshal Cara Dune. At the very least, it’ll likely be a while before we finally see this one.
Lando
TBA
Writer: Justin Simien
The smoothest scoundrel in the galaxy is finally getting his own event series on Disney+. It’s currently unclear whether this series will follow the younger Lando played by Donald Glover or the original one played by Billy Dee Williams. Maybe it’ll star both?!
A Droid Story
TBA
This animated TV movie will follow C-3PO and R2-D2 as well as introduce a new hero to the Star Wars galaxy. That’s all we know at the moment!
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

Prowl was about ready to give up on the series, but then the thoroughly dislikable people being documented in this series became about 1% more likable, so he’s giving it another week.

Star Trek: Discovery Shows Everyone How It's Done
In months past Game of Thrones had a series-long finale and 22 blockbusters culminated in Endgame. Amidst it all, Star Trek: Discovery, only in it’s second season, showed everyone how it’s done.
Universe-halting storylines are a dime a dozen since Marvel and Doctor Who dictated that for a showdown to be meaningful all life as we know it apparently has to, more than once in a while, hang in the balance. Discovery, playing the card for the first time, actually gave us a circumstance where it felt believable and relatable; leveraging ever-present musings on the detractions and self-preservation tendencies inherent to understandings of artificial intelligence. Here, thrillingly, varying iterations are put forward as to how this might manifest in different forms and how that seemingly aggressive or otherwise might pose a threat.
Sure, the Infinity storyline was ten years in the making but when it came down to it Thanos didn’t take too much time to come by those stones. With Discovery’s showrunners taking the season (and last year’s) to set the groundwork for the believable, eerie threat, when push comes to shove the stakes seemed mindbogglingly real.
Ridden with, as is usually the case, overwhelmingly familial elements for those we’ve come to know, namely Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green), these episodes don’t bear the overstated, soap opera-ish feel that undermines some Trek, in large part due to that emotive being rooted in a threat so foreboding and well-articulated as this one. The presence of Spock (Ethan Peck) in such capable hands buoys the series, with this season welcomely elaborating on the character’s lore rather than pivoting to fan service as could easily and regrettably been the case.
Only in it’s second year, the show delves into a much-speculated Federation era and too the very origin of Star Trek that along with Captain Pike (Anson Mount) has been the subject of much fan fiction. Graciously, Discovery emerges far from anything of the kind, expanding on the canon rather than regurgitating it or relying heavily on mainstay Trek imagery or tropes. The insight into Pike, well known to be historically short-changed by the saga, works wonders and only more so given Mount’s abilities; stepping into the series with welcome aplomb as if he’d always been there.
Shrewdly tying up loose threads and plot inconsistencies vis-a-vis Discovery and its precursors, those involved were too wise to split the final story/episode into two epic segments. Together effectively a feature-length thriller more rewarding than any of the recent Star Trek films (to note; Star Trek and Beyond were enjoyable), it’s also a more complete work than any of the aforementioned behemoth conclusions that came along this April past. Separate to actually being able to see what is going on as intense space battles (with evident spatial awareness – we always know where we are in all this) play out before our eyes, there’s a lot happening with our leads. Unusually, we can follow it, and it makes sense.
Several storylines and, surprisingly, significant character development and dynamics emerge as characters race to save it all, whether it be Michael’s relationship with Ash (and, yes, Voq), Pike’s approach to command, Saru’s further self-actualisation, Stamets’ less than common romantic situation and Tilly, well, being Tilly. We’re even introduced to a hilarious new character in the guise of Yadira Guevara-Prip’s teen Xahean Queen Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po.
Packing some marvellous special effects and representations of how time operates, absent Marvel’s signature and tired quippy style the approach to humour, rendering it organically and as we’ve come accustomed to these characters interacting when under pressure, is very welcome. Shoehorning in nothing, this well-considered, well-staged and utterly thrilling take on Star Trek will go down among it’s best.
Star Trek: Discovery is now streaming on Netflix

The Michael Burnham Show: Scavengers (3x06)
Summary: Burnham rescues Book from slavery and recovers the “black box” McGuffin that’ll undoubtedly drive the plot in the following episode.
Comments: The plot here is simple: Burnham recovers the flight recorder of a Starfleet vessel while rescuing Book from slavery.
This space!BlackBox flight recorder in question was from a ship destroyed in The Burn. We’re told—suddenly—that Burnham has actually been trying to collect these things over the past year because if she can find at least three whose time signatures don’t match the others, it would imply The Burn had a source of origin and she could use that data to triangulate the origin. Well, Book found one, but got himself into a bit of a mess in attempting to recover it and *yadda yadda* now he’s a slave.
Just, three predictions here real quick-like: The origin of “The Burn” is gonna be: (1) Burnham herself (hence the name), (2) Burnham’s mom, or (3) the planet Vulcan. I’m adding that third one because the writers have less than a cursory understanding of Star Trek and believe their audience may share that deficiency (which may have some truth) and so they “need” a “dramatic” twist but can only accomplish said twist—not through competent writing—but by name-dropping some words that can be expected to be recognizable by the audience. Hence “the planet Vulcan.”
Anyways, this was one confusing mess of an episode that nevertheless finally shows a few (welcome) character moments. But the tone is all over the place, as per usual in this show.
For example, Adira seeing—and openly communicating—with her (very much dead) ex-lover is weird, right? Like, she needs to go to Sick Bay, right? The girl is mentally deranged and/or going insane, right? It’s being portrayed as something out of a psychological thriller where the main character starts doubting their sanity in dark rooms. But then Stamis just has a pleasant chat with her about how it’s okay to be mentally ill and they can all be friends due to shared psychological distress?
Also, I'm convinced the director doesn't read the script. In a previous episode, Saru is definitely having a HAL-9000 “I’m gonna f— you up and your little crew too” moment with the Discovery’s computer and the tone is very dark and strongly suggestive of imminent danger. But, nope, it turns out Discovery’s computer is just trying to be pals. So... why were the previous scenes shot like something out of a horror film?
As a second example, Detmer seriously damages her skull and has a psychological breakdown during a pleasant dinner but it’s played off like “she’s part of the family, she’ll be okay, no biggie.” I don’t know what I’m supposed to be feeling, because it’s clearly portrayed one way (she seriously needs medical attention), and I’m comfortable feeling as one could be expected based on the clear portrayal (she seriously needs medical attention), but then someone makes an off-hand remark about Detmer’s traumatic brain injury and how that “makes her part of the family.” That is only an appropriate response if I understood the previous scenes incorrectly; i.e., she isn’t actually seriously injured. But, if that’s true, then why did she get hurled over the console, crash into a bunch of shit, and barely manage to stumble back to her post with blood streaming down her face? Why show the scene where she has a clear mental breakdown and starts joking about Stamis (or whoever) being dead (or whatever)? Why were these scenes filmed/shot (directed) to communicate that something is seriously wrong with Detmer when, in fact, there is nothing wrong with Detmer?
Anyways, this is CBS “Trek” so we get scenes of slave labor, a violent prison break, and a bloody decapitation. But it’s not a regular, run-of-the-mill French Revolution type of decapitation. It’s more like a Battle Royale “this is clearly an R-rated movie” style decapitation where a Bajoran’s head explodes into bloody mist as everyone watches while doing their best Mark Wahlberg impression.
It’s not fair to compare TNG to this sloppy mess, but CBS invites that comparison by putting “Star Trek” in the title, so... Remember in TNG: Tapestry how Picard meets Q in the afterlife and we get treated to a story about how humans are the sum of their choices, even the bad ones? We’re shown how Picard’s life could have turned out much, much different had he made slightly different choices. It’s a message that can resonate with any human being: our failures make us who we are as much as our successes. My point is that the show elevated itself above pure entertainment to share a meaningful message—and that's what made it "Star Trek."
Here, the message is... what? It’s best if your head is not turned into blood mist? What value does this show provide?
Anyways, this is already way too long and I haven’t even talked about the episode. So let’s see... Burnham is “demoted” to Chief Science Officer, which makes absolutely no difference and doesn’t actually change anything in the show, but gives us an excuse to cry a bunch. Georgiou is all messed-up and having visions of her other, non-Terran self (I think)? There’s a scene where it’s implied Stamis and his b/f just had sex but... didn’t they separate? I thought they broke up? Uhm, Stamis talks to Adira... Burnham whispers a lot to make her dialogue appear dramatic... Tilly plays with a cat... Georgiou makes fat jokes... Wait, did she kick anything this episode? I feel like she must have during the prison break scene, but I don't remember it happening...
My enjoyment: 2/5
