Every time I listen to When I’m Sixty-Four the lyrics ‘in the summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight/if it’s not too dear’ make me laugh because Sgt. Pepper was released in 1967, when The Beatles were at their peak, and they’re like “ooh that looks a bit pricey honey….gotta save aha…” like they really tried so hard to make those lyrics relateable huh

A moça se lembra de algumas em especial, a dos discos, Tea for the Tillerman do Cat Stevens, a do Billy Preston e a Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Ele chegou, no começa atrapalhando um pouco o seu momento musical, mas depois engataram um papo entremeado de olhares, sorrisos e toques sutis.

Ali foi o começo de tudo...

Week #2: Finish Project #1 & Start Project #2 (a series of three grid structures)

Week #2 was mainly comprised of finishing the rest of Project #1, due to an extension assigned after the last class on Thursday, August 31st. All students were able to meet the requirements listed for the extension to be granted. This includes that all students enrolled in the course must submit a photo of the first row and the first square of the second row. This week was spent on finalizing the nine square project and introducing Project #2.

As stated in the previous blog post, the goal of Project #1 was to create nine 4" x 4" squares that convey the personality of a famous person. This individual could be chosen from any traditional media, but the image could not come from a computer or online source. I chose a picture from People's Magazine covering the influence of the Beatles and its lasting impact on the music industry. The image was a black-and-white photograph of Paul McCartney. During the planning phase, I chose to showcase the personality of the person by introducing a visual element from albums he contributed to during his time with the Beatles.

The front row includes the required Xerox image of Paul McCartney taken from the People's Magazine article. The second square is a black line drawing of the original image. This square was also inspired by the art style of the Beatles album cover titled "Revolver." The third square was an outline of only the negative portions of the image using black ink. This section allowed me to experiment with various line widths, and to ensure the consistency of the middle row of squares, I created thick outlines that were easy to cut and replicate accurately with an Xacto blade. The fourth square was an outline of both the positive and negative space of the image but traced onto colored cardstock. The purpose of this square is to create a high-contrast version of the original image. The colors were inspired by the color palette of the Hard Days Night album, which was predominately dark blue with red accents. The fifth square repeated the same process as the fourth square but included a different color palette to create a low-contrast image. The color scheme was inspired by the artwork of the Yellow Submarine album, which included different variations of yellow. The sixth square was an experimentation of different textured papers to recreate the image. I chose a golden paper with a glitter texture for the background and blue sequin paper for the profile. These colors and textures were intended to capture the look and feel of Paul McCartney's iconic style on the Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover.

Moving to the last row, the seventh square was a Xerox experimentation of the original image. I specifically wanted to capture the other members of the Beatles in some way, while also providing visual commentary to the image. Some may argue that without Paul McCartney, the Beatles would not have been as successful or had a lasting impact on the music industry. Without Paul's brilliant writing, perhaps the Beatles would have never existed. To reference the other members of the Beatles, while also reiterating the idea of him being one of the main reasons for the band's success, I chose to manipulate the image to create four sets of eyes placed in various positions to represent all four members looking at the audience. The eighth square was a xerox of the original image and it was colorized using color pencils. The color choices for this square were inspired by the color palette of the Rubber Soul album, which is primarily orange, and various shades of green and brown. The third and final square was a conceptual interpretation of the image using various colors of cardstock. The purpose of this square is not to see the person at all but to provide visual clues as to who this person may be. For this square, I chose to draw inspiration from the Apple label, which can be found on any LP or 45 record. Due to my love of collecting Beatles albums on vinyl, I always find myself reminded of the Beatles whenever I see the Apple label. Due to this logo being iconic among album collectors, I found it to be appropriate to incorporate into the final square.

After undergoing a critique of this project from my peers, as well as undergoing my own self-reflection on this assignment, I can conclude there are strong and weak points to this project. In referring to the square in the middle of the first row, the minimalism proved to be strong and effective in representing the look of Paul McCartney during that period of his life. The minimalistic style represented on the Revolver album also proved to be quite helpful in distinguishing the details and shapes of the original image. The stippling effect also proved to be quite useful in providing a sense of shading to a minimalist art style. The first square in the second row also proved to be quite strong in capturing the high contrast of the image, and the colors blue and red are complementary to each other and create a pleasant dynamic for the eyes. The square that proved to be the weakest was the second image in the second row, as this image failed to meet the requirement of creating low contrast. I could have used two different yellows that would be similar to each other. When converted to greyscale, the image should display a low contrast. While this project had varying strong points, it is important to not only address the weak elements but also discuss how the project can be improved. If I chose to redo this project, I would play around with different types of yellow cardstock until I found two that are close in color and tone.

This week also served as an introduction to Project 2, which requires students to design a series of three grid structures for the purpose of experimenting with type, practice organizing and mapping out grids, and applying design principles (such as negative and positive space, structure, balance, tone, etc.) The readings for this week also dove deeper into the concept of grids, types of grids, and their functionality within a design space. In referencing a quote directly from Ellen Lupton's book titled "Thinking with Type," Lupton states on page 165 that grids can be thought of as "programs": " as a set of rules for constructing a range of visual solutions…The difficulty is to find the balance, the maximum of conformity to a rule with the maximum of freedom." I find this statement to be true, as I myself am finding it difficult to blend the type of balance and organization required for this project while also pushing the physical parameters of this project. Grids are a fundamental part of organizing information, but if used properly, can help push the traditional boundaries of graphic design. The problem I am struggling with is arranging the type to create an abstract composition. I fear the abstract look and feel of this project will appear repetitive and not provide enough contrast of visual interest to create three compelling grid structures. To create visual interest, I can find reversed letters (white on black) and utilize colored pages of type to create a gray effect, and the transition from light to dark must be apparent. These sources of type can be found in various resources (such as books, magazines, posters, etc.) I understand that the project's goal is to serve as an introduction to the grid and how it can be utilized in a visually interesting space, but I have some concerns over how accurately I can complete this assignment while staying within the set requirements.

Made this for my Beatles class (Yes I'm taking a college class about the Beatles). For our album review project, my group did Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. A part of our project was to make our own version of the album cover. One of my partners on the project drew the concept and scanned it for me to digitally color & enhance. Here is the result.
