Hey! A coworker of mine recently stated she’s interested in learning Italian traditional witchcraft and folk magic and i was wondering if you knew of any books that go over those subjects? Or if you yourself know anything of it. I think her father practiced benedicaria im not certain. Thank ya!
The problem with Italian Witchcraft is that it’s in Italian! For example the books of Andrea Romanazzi are really great! The more important is “Guida alle Streghe in Italia”, which describes the different pagan survivals for every region, while “La Stregoneria in Italia“ does the same for the magical practices. If you are interested in Sicilian Witchcraft, you can also read Henningsen’s “Le “donne di fuori”: un modello arcaico del sabba” and “Fate, sibille e altre strane donne” by Elsa Guggino and the books of Giuseppe Pitrè.For Sardinia, “Aradia in Sardinia” by Sabina Magliocco, "Lo sciamanesimo in Sardegna" and “Maschere, miti e feste della Sardegna” by Dolores Turchi and “Tradizioni popolari di Sardegna” by Grazia Deledda. For Basilicata and Puglia, read Sud e Magia” and “The Land of Remorse” by De Martino. For the North of Italy, read “La signora del Gioco” by Luisa Muraro and “La strega, ovvero degli inganni dei demoni” by Giovan Francesco Pico della Mirandola. For the Friuli region, there is “Night Battles” by Carlo Ginzburg; while Carlo Ginzburg’s book “Ecstasies” talks about Witchcraft in all Italy and Europe, so it’s helpful the same. Also really helpful for the allusions to many Italian regional traditions is “Caccia alle Streghe - La credenza nelle streghe dal sec. XIII al XIX con particolare riferimento all'Italia” by Giuseppe Bonomo. There are many many many books, it depends on which traditions you want to focus on.Moreover, there is a series of books by “Newton & Compton” which focuses on the legends and folk beliefs of every region, which is very helpful. One can read them and apply what they read in practice using this method:https://elegantshapeshifter.tumblr.com/post/170787751466/thanks-for-running-this-blog-it-seems-reallyThe problem is that all these books are in Italian, so she should learn Italian first, or read them with the dictionary near her.— For Benedicaria:Benedicaria is a word used in America, here it has no name, it’s just folk magic.Usually those who practice folk magic are Catholic. But as I said in previous posts, here I make a difference between Folk Magic (or Operative Witchcraft) and Witchcraft (or Ritualistic Witchcraft). Witchcraft is a religious practice focused on the Sabbath (and in order to have a traditional Sabbath, you need *somebody* who is at the head of the Sabbath, therefore the religious aspect); while Folk Magic is not religious, and the majority of those who used Folk Magic in Italy were Catholics and worshipped saints and the virgin Mary. What I’m proposing here is Witchcraft (aka Ritualistic Witchcraft), not Folk Magic (aka Operative Witchcraft). However, in De Martino and Giuseppe Pitrè books you’ll find many Catholic charms, Christian Folk Magic, so if she’s interested in Christian Folk Magic, she can look for their books :)

Sardinia welcomes
Tumblr media
Either because of its sandy beaches, deep blue seas, religious traditions, unique food choices, ancient history and rich cities, Sardegna will always call your memories back there. Just after you enjoyed it, and every time you will choose your next summer holiday location.
After rocky North-Western shores of S’Archittu du Cuglieri, jewels bays and industrial archeology of Nebida in the South-West…
