synopsis:

Out on the back porch, the day’s lingering heat is laced with the cold edge of night. It’s not quite cool enough for a sweatshirt, but he wouldn’t mind one. With the sun fully down, it’s incredible how dark it is. The zombie apocalypse could start right here, shambling in from the shadows, and no one would ever know. The night is full of bug songs, mostly, and a bird or two, plus Zayn’s quiet rustling as he gets the joint sorted.

The flare of the lighter is piercingly bright. He passes the lighter to Zayn, by the end, so their fingers don’t brush. Then he’s wrapped in the smell of weed, thick and sweet and scratchy, deja vu strong enough to drown in. He brings himself back to here and now with an effort.

There’s the farm, sleeping and quiet.

There’s his hand, wrapped around a cigarette.

There’s Zayn’s voice, low in his ear, lazy accent like an ache in his heart.

Out on the back porch, the day’s lingering heat is laced with the cold edge of night. It’s not quite cool enough for a sweatshirt, but he wouldn’t mind one. With the sun fully down, it’s incredible how dark it is. The zombie apocalypse could start right here, shambling in from the shadows, and no one would ever know. The night is full of bug songs, mostly, and a bird or two, plus Zayn’s quiet rustling as he gets the joint sorted.

The flare of the lighter is piercingly bright. He passes the lighter to Zayn, by the end, so their fingers don’t brush. Then he’s wrapped in the smell of weed, thick and sweet and scratchy, deja vu strong enough to drown in. He brings himself back to here and now with an effort.

There’s the farm, sleeping and quiet.

There’s his hand, wrapped around a cigarette.

There’s Zayn’s voice, low in his ear, lazy accent like an ache in his heart.

“He’s devised a plan to find the perfect suitor,” Niall says, laughing a bit. “It’s classic Haz, it is.”

“What is it?” Liam asks.

“He’s announced that if someone can open his front door with a key that he’s tied around his cat’s neck, he’ll marry them,” Louis answers. Liam raises an eyebrow.

“Doesn’t seem too difficult,” he comments, sipping at his mead.

“That’s the thing, though,” Niall says, and he’s laughing genuinely now, cheeks pink. “Harry’s trained that damn cat to never be caught.”

[Or: Harry hatches a foolproof plan. Liam just tries to catch up.]

She wakes up later, well into morning, for real this time. There’s a crow by her feet and a note on her pillow, an unfamiliar scrawl on folded orange paper.

The paper is heavy, smooth. “I like you,” it reads. She’s no sooner read it than it turns to flame, burning cold in her fingers until nothing is left, not even a trace of ash.

Except. A phone number appears, inked in fuschia on the palm of her hand. That’s Zayn’s magic for you, all enchantment and surprise. She rolls her eyes, but puts the number in her phone. The crow’s not going to tell anyone about the huge smile on her face.
