Good morning everyone and happy Saturday to you! Today I’ll have two posts on the grid and this one is a haul of three hardbacks I was “made” to buy ummm by myself 😏 Otherlands caught my eye for the stunning cover (I’m such a magpie) but the contents inside sound pretty great. This is a nonfiction book and an “epic, exhilarating journey into deep time, showing us the Earth as it used to exist, and the worlds that were here before ours.” The scientist in me is saying YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU! 😂 Now I already have a paperback copy of Fingersmith, one of my favourite books by one of my favourite authors but of course once the 20th anniversary edition had been released, I needed it. If you haven’t read it and are a fan of historical fiction and surprises - you’re in for a treat! Finally, I’ve been so excited for the release of The First To Die At The End which is a prequel to Silvera’s incredible novel, They Both Die At The End. The story follows “two new strangers who spend a life-changing day together after Death-Cast makes its first fateful calls.” I’m going to be buddy reading this with my sister @chrissireads and I can’t wait! 🌻BOOKISH THOUGHTS🌻 The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. . I have mixed feelings about this. I loved the setting but the pacing was off for me. It took too long to set off and once you think it does, it goes to its slow-pacing again and for me it lost its momentum and I found myself not interested midway through. Thankfully it picked up again and I was in for a ride. . As I said, what I love the most was the setting and the gothic atmosphere Waters created. The entire story is written in a very subtle way, even the answers given - blink and you miss it kinda of way. It such a pity that although I cared for the characters, I didn't fully connect with them. Like, I felt sorry for them but at the same time.... I didn’t? It’s a weird thing to explain. I did feel sorry for Gyp though… . However, the issues Waters discussed and how she did it was spot on. I love the commentary on class and its decadency in post-war England but also the frustration of those who try to raise above their status; and despite being respectable people in society they are never seen as anything other than their class. Repression also plays a massive role in this novel. . Rating: 7/10 . This was my first Sarah Waters and I won’t be my last. I own Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith, and since everybody says the latter is her masterpiece I’ll save it for last. . I hope you’re having a great Sunday! Hello everyone! You know the drill, we’re halfway through the week, the weekend is in sight and I’m back today with a post inspired by the lovely Sally @salboreads who did some character pairings. That is, characters from different books who you think go well together. From The Observations, Bessy Buckley, a feisty young Irish maid and in Fingersmith, Sue Trinder, who becomes a ladies maid as part of an elaborate scheme. I think both these girls would find similarities between each other and could even learn things from the other! From The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August, the title character Harry August and from Life After Life, Ursula Todd. Both are time travellers and could have a lot to talk about sharing their experiences and able to understand exactly what the other goes through. From Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet and from Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Tess D’Urberville. I can imagine these ladies taking long walks together and Elizabeth bringing a bit of humour and light into Tess’ life which if you’ve read the book, you can understand why she might need it! 😂 This was fun!
