Between the Ink and Papers Ch. 6
Summary: Steve and Peggy have been divorced for a year and Sarah is still starting to find her groove in it. However, it becomes a lot easier when she and Typhanie realize it might be time for her dad to start dating again.
Pairings: tattooartist!dad!Steve x Reader, Typhanie x Sarah, Peggy x Logan, Bucky x Natasha
Word Count: 1271 words
Warnings: crying teenager, bit of angst, parent and kid have a healthy convo
A/N: I know I’m not on here much anymore. I haven’t been in the best spot in a lot of ways. But I’m trying. Here y’all go.
--
The walls did nothing to silence the music Sam and Typhanie had put together for the “party”, but Sarah wasn’t paying much attention. She watched the way her foot scuffed against the ground, thumb scraping against the soda’s metal lip. As much as she wanted to go outside and have fun with her family and friends, her ass felt glued to the chair.
Why had she gotten so mad?
Sarah looked out the window, noting how happy everyone looked. Sam was making some joke, probably at Bucky’s expensive, and actually making her uncle smile for the first time in a long time. Tony and Peper had managed to show up this time – and with little Morgan too. Typhanie was showing her some dance move.
They all seemed happy.
But Sarah was so focused on how angry she had gotten earlier…The way she had snapped at her dad…
He was trying and she had been so hateful.
Sarah blinked, tugging at her sleeve and wiping away a stray tear. Would you even care? She had asked that as if he hadn’t done everything he could for her.
What was wrong with her?
Sarah gnawed at her lip, biting at the abused skin until she tasted blood. That anger always seemed to be lurking. Waiting for her to lash out. Practically begging to scream at someone. Blame someone.
Wasn’t she supposed to be getting better?
She jumped to her feet. Grabbing her backpack, Sarah tugged at each zipper. She was desperate to find that stupid notebook. The one Ms. Y/L/N was always telling her to write in. This seemed as good a time as any.
Finally, between the unfinished homework and returned grades, she found the stupid thing. She wasn’t proud of herself. She knew she had been slacking on it. But when she found a blank page, somewhere in the middle because she couldn’t bother to flip to the beginning, she started to write…
And write…
And write.
--
Steve glanced back at the apartment. Sarah still hadn’t come out. Sam had blamed it on teenage hormones, encouraging him to just let her breathe. She’d join them when she felt like it. No sooner and no later.
Still – his kid was stubborn.
“You keep staring at my house like that and it might catch on fire,” Sam joked. He handed him a fresh beer, grabbing the empty one as Steve tried to smile.
“I hate when we get like this. When she was younger, it was never like this.”
“No, it wasn’t. But then you guys went and got divorced. Then her mom went and dated the second closest thing to an uncle that Sarah had. Only second to me.” Sam grinned, trying to cheer him up. When he noticed it wasn’t getting him anywhere, he knew he needed to be more honest. He shrugged, “Kinda messed her up a bit.”
“I hate that. I always wanted us to be a family. Dysfunctional, sure, but a family.”
“I know, man. You’ll figure it out. Raising teenagers isn’t meant to be easy.”
Steve sighed. Once again, he glanced to that damned apartment. “Yeah. I guess you’re right. But I can’t just sit here. She needs her dad.”
Sam watched him walk back to the house. He couldn’t stop the smile that split his face. As much as Steve doubted himself as a single father, he really knew what his kid needed. And Sam respected that more than Steve would ever know. However…He looked back to Typhanie. It was time he learned to do the same.
--
The familiar creak from the backdoor signaled another person coming in. Sarah glanced up, really only expecting Bucky or Sam looking for sodas or more food. Or Pepper in need of a bathroom. Ever since Morgan was born, that seemed to be the normal.
“Hey.”
Sarah looked up, eyes red and cheeks wet from tears. Steve’s heart sank at the sight. He glanced to the notebook she was writing. Multiple pages were trapped between her pages, looking heavy with ink. She sniffled, turning her gaze back to the book. She hated the tear stains and messy writing, but Sarah had to admit…She felt better. “Hi.”
He walked around the edge of the couch. Sitting on the edge of the coffee table, Steve wished he could read her mind. He’d give anything to know what was running around in that head of hers. “I owe you an apology.”
Sarah’s brow scrunched, face contorting as her head whipped around. “What?”
Steve smiled, relieved that he wasn’t getting the silent treatment. She used to do that a lot when she was a kid. “I’m sorry.”
“For what? You didn’t do anything.”
“That’s not true. I was angry at how your mother handled things and because of that, I lashed out at you. It wasn’t right of me. And just because I’m the adult, doesn’t mean I can claim everything I do is right. You deserve to know when someone else is in the wrong.”
When she became silent, he was worried that stubborn little girl of his fell back into old habits. Instead, she nodded. “Thank you.” She looked back at him. “I’m sorry too. I didn’t – “ She sniffled, using the back of her sleeve to wipe at her eyes once more. “I didn’t mean to get so angry. I just – I didn’t – I’m sorry.“
“Shh…” Steve pulled her into his arms, holding her tight like when she would crawl into their bed from nightmares. She always begged him to squeeze her tight. She always believed his strength could scare the monsters away.
Now he just wanted it to scare her anger away.
“It’s okay, baby girl. It’s okay. I’m not mad at you.” He kissed her hair, fingers tracing patterns as her shoulders shook. “I promise. I’m not mad.”
They stayed like that for a while. Just holding each other. It had been a while since Steve had been so worried. He was starting to realize that, now that she was getting older, things were different. They had to figure out a way to talk.
He kissed the top of her head, sitting back as a watery smile graced Sarah’s face. “There she is,” he teased. She rolled her eyes before he gestured to the notebook. “Is that the writing thing that Ms. Y/L/N wanted you to try?”
Sarah nodded, running a hand through her hair. “She’s kind of weird, but it was good advice.”
Steve thought back to the first time he met her. Yeah. Weird was definitely a word he would use to describe her. “I’m glad she could help you.”
“So am I.” Sarah fingered the edge of the notebook. The untouched pages felt a little different to the ones she had been scribbling in. She started to actually like how it felt. “Do you think she can help? With my anger?”
Steve watched how she stared at the notebook as if it held her redemption. She was a kid. Kids were allowed to be angry. They were allowed to feel something when life wasn’t going the way they expected. And here she was feeling guilty. Maybe a hug wasn’t enough this time.
And he was going to have to be okay with that. He was going to have to learn to be okay with it.
“I think,” he whispered. She looked up at him, silently begging for answers. Ones that teenagers asked that parents often didn’t have the answers to. “I think she can help our whole family. In fact…” Steve tucked her hair behind her ear, tugging gently. “She’s probably our best shot.”

Three parents and one counselor. The tension was…exhausting. And they’d only been here a minute. Oh, what Y/N would give to kick all three of them out. “So…” She looked from the married couple to the single dad. “Since this is Mr. Roger’s first meeting, who wants to play catch up?” Y/N opened her drawer, pulling out a file.
More silence.
Y/N glanced from one parent to the other. Her fingers ran over the papers. How was it these three adults managed to act less mature than the students she worked with?
“Okay.” She closed the file. “We’re not doing this.”
Peggy frowned. “Ms. Y/L/N – “
“No. I need honesty from all three of you. Clearly Mr. Rogers wasn’t informed of our meetings and I don’t appreciate the lies.” She grabbed her mug, running her thumb over the lip. Leaning back in her chair, she reminded them, “I’m not on any parents’ side in this matter. I am here helping Sarah. Remember? The girl who didn’t talk for two months.” She looked at Peggy and Logan. “The one who ran away when she found out you two were dating. I’m here to help her. Okay?”
Steve barely managed to contain his smile, glancing from her to his ex-wife. As much as he enjoyed seeing Y/N call her out, he was curious about Sarah. “How’s she doing?” He sat back in his chair, intertwining his hands.
“She’s making a lot of headway. Her grades have improved and teachers say she’s interacting in class again. The thing I really want to focus on is the anger. I’m still working on getting her to journal, but I think that if she starts writing down her emotions, then it will help her learn to process those feelings.”
Steve frowned, adjusting in his seat. He looked at Peggy and Logan. What was she talking about? He’d seen moments when Sarah had reacted, sure, but he wouldn’t say she had any sort of anger problem. “What’s she talking about?”
“Sarah still hasn’t warmed up to me being in the picture.”
Steve snorted, a wry smile curving his lips. “A year and still nothing. That just might be because she doesn’t like you, Logan.”
“Can we please not do this, you two?”
“Why not?” Steve shrugged. “You left me for him. And I kept your secret. It’s not my fault that Sarah seems to think it’s still a bad idea.”
Logan hated how all of this went down. He and Steve used to be friends. Good friends. And he wanted to get back to that, but it seemed impossible. “Steve, c’mon. Can’t we just fix this?“
“How would you recommend doing that?” Steve laughed. This was unbelievable that Logan thought it was such an easy fix. “Seriously, I’m curious.”
“Hey.” Y/N waved a hand, determined to get their attention. “Hello? This…” She gestured to the three. “This isn’t my expertise. And honestly? Seeing this? A lot of things make so much more sense.”
Peggy frowned. “What are you talking about?”
“She isn’t an idiot. She can see how you three behave and she mirrors it.” Y/N sighed. “If you want her to stop focusing on the negatives in this situation, you three have to learn how to see eye to eye.”
--
What Y/N had to say stayed with Steve even as he left the school. How much of a brave face had his daughter been putting up? Why did he feel so in the dark?
“Hey, man, you alright?”
Steve blinked. He realized he had zoned out and that Sam had been trying to get his attention. “Sorry.” He ran a hand over his face, trying to push past those negative thoughts. He had to get out of his head. If he didn’t, talking to Sarah about it would be a disaster.
“Where’s your head at?”
Steve looked towards Sam. He was grilling, getting ready for their monthly barbeque where everyone got together. It was one of their favorite events.
And yet Steve wasn’t excited.
He glanced at his beer, taking a much needed drink. “I found out that Peggy and Logan have been meeting with Sarah’s counselor.” Another drink. “Apparently it’s been going on for a while.”
Sam paused. He couldn’t believe he heard that right. “And you never went?”
“I didn’t know about it. Peg never told me.”
With that, Sam reached for his own beer. He shook his head. “Damn.”
“Yeah. So now I’m learning my kid has anger issues and it’s because she sees the tension between all three of us.”
Sam chuckled. “She’s always been passionate, Steve. Anger isn’t exactly surprising.”
“I never see her like that, Sam. She’s my wild child, sure, but I’ve never had a reason to think she’s angry.”
He nodded. Steve was a good dad. To hear he was missing a chunk of his kid’s life…Sam couldn’t imagine the guilt he was feeling. “She’s swimming right now, doesn’t she? Head over there. You can talk then instead of having her meet everyone here.”
“You don’t mind if I skip helping you this time around?”
Sam snorted. “What help were you? Staring off into space and risking my ribs burning?” He took another swig, his smile almost splitting his face in two. “Get out of here. She’s your kid, Rogers. I know how much you love her. She needs to know too.”
Steve grabbed his jacket. “Thanks, Sammy.’
“Yeah, yeah.” He watched Steve leave just as Typhanie poked her head outside. “Hey, kid. Wanna help out?”
Her nose scrunched as she looked at the grill. She hated that thing. “I’ll stick with picking the music.”
He chuckled as he listened to the back door close. Pouting to himself, he started to dramatically sing, “I’m all alone…There’s no one here beside me…”
--
The smell of chlorine was overwhelming. Enough to make a person’s head spin and then some. But Steve wasn’t paying it any mind. He listened to the rush of water. Kids were laughing, heading to the showers. Steve moved out of their way. He was careful walking on the drenched floor, stepping into the indoor swimming pool. He was just in time too, catching a glimpse of Sarah’s reverse twist off the diving board.
The door closed behind him just as she met the water. She took off like a speeding bullet. Unable to look away, Steve took a seat on the bleachers. His thigh brushed her backpack, knocking it over. It hit the metal with a loud thud and he winced.
“Fuck,” he hissed. Gathering it up, he noticed the journal Y/N had mentioned. It was opened, today’s date scribbled in the corner and no passage. He closed his eyes, tucking it into her backpack before zipping it shut. She really was struggling.
He looked back to the water. She’d already reached the end of the pool, twisting and turning to finish the lap. Always so strong. Steve was amazed by her abilities.
However, when she finished the lap and took her goggles off, she was shocked to see him there. “Dad?” She lifted herself out of the pool, immediately grabbing her towel. Her eyes shifted to the clock hanging on the wall. “I’m not supposed to be out of here for like…twenty more minutes. Everything okay?”
Steve chuckled. She was always so curious. Always had to understand everything. But then his amusement fell short. Was it because she was naturally inquisitive? Or was it because of what he and Peggy had put her through?
“I thought I could pick you up this time.”
Sarah snorted. “You realize we’re walking either way, right?” She started using the towel to dry her hair. When he raised a brow at her attitude, she winced. “Sorry. I just wasn’t expecting you.”
Steve shook his head. “It’s fine. I get it. Um…actually – “
She raised a brow, mirroring the look he had just given her. “So there was a reason.”
“I saw your counselor at school today.”
Sarah nodded. “Cool.”
Steve watched her carefully. She seemed so…fine. Was she really so good at hiding it? “Did you know your mom and Logan were meeting with her?”
“Yup.”
Steve clenched his jaw. She knew. She knew and she didn’t say anything. She didn’t offer for him to go. Nothing. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Sarah shrugged. “I thought you knew. Besides, you’re not the parent struggling here. I guess I just didn’t think it was that big of a deal.”
“Sarah, it is a big deal. You’re my kid. I want to know what’s going on in your life.”
“You know I’ve been going to therapy. Hell, if it was that big of a deal, you could have gone at any time. You didn’t need to wait until you got invited.”
“That’s not the point, Sarah. I didn’t even know the fucking meetings existed.”
Sarah grabbed her backpack, looking down at him as he desperately looked at her. “If they didn’t, would we be having this conversation?”
Steve faltered. Did he hear that right? “What are you talking about?”
“If Mom and Logan weren’t meeting with Miss Y/L/N, would we be having this conversation? Would you even care?”
“Of course I would! I care about you. I always have. You’re my kid.”
Sarah groaned. Her jaw ticked, shoulders tensing. Taking a slow, determined breath, she clarified, “I didn’t say that. I know you care and I know you love me. I’m asking if you would care about what Miss Y/L/N has to say. Would you have taken the initiative to start those meetings yourself?”
Oh. Steve had never looked at it like that.
Glancing at his fists, he shook his head. “No. You’ve always seemed…fine.”
“Yeah. Because I am. I’m not great and I’m not bad. I’m fucking fine.”
“Sarah, don’t talk to me like that. I’m still your dad.”
“Then believe me.” Sarah scoffed. “We’re only having this conversation because it looks like Mom got one up on you.”
“That’s not true.”
“No? Then what is it? Why? Because I don’t understand.”
“Because you’re angry!” His voice bellowed, bouncing off the walls as he rose to his feet. He wasn’t trying to scare her. He was just frustrated. Still, she took a step back. And he hated that. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled. I…I’m sorry.”
Sarah shrugged. “It’s okay.”
With a soft sigh, Steve elaborated. “Your counselor says you have this anger inside you…and I had no idea. You’re keeping things from me.”
“Or it just doesn’t exist when I’m with you!” She hadn’t meant to snap, but damn it. Everything was hitting her at once. All her emotions. Everything she got to ignore when she stayed with her dad, she was having to face it now. Sarah threw her bag into the bleachers, jumping only from how loud it was. “Fuck! I – “
“Language, Sarah.”
She scowled. Her shoulders set, she slowed her speech. That attitude of hers was slipping through, as if she were having to talk down to someone. “I had no reason to be angry around you.”
“Don’t talk to me like that.”
“Then stop belittling me.” Sarah glared at him. Tears were in her eyes and Steve felt his heart crack. He couldn’t remember the last time he was the cause of her tears. Not because of a conversation. He reached for her, but she took a step back. “I love staying with you.” She knew Y/N would be happy at least. She was letting it all out. Using her words. “I hate that I can only visit every other week. I hate Logan. I hate his entire existence. There are some days that I wish he would die. That’s how I feel every day I’m at Mom’s. But because you’re a tattoo artist who doesn’t make enough income for two fucking bedrooms, I’m stuck there. I’m stuck living a miserable life that I hate!”
Silence.
It was so painful. So ugly. He had never…never heard her speak like that. Not to him.
“Sarah…”
She grabbed her backpack, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I’m getting a shower.”
“Sarah – “
He reached for her, but Sarah jerked away from him, clinging to both towel and backpack. “Just go.” She wiped her nose on her arm, ignoring the burn of chlorine in her nostrils. “I’ll meet you at Sam’s.”
Steve watched her storm off, tears threatening to spill. He closed his eyes, hating the way the door slammed between them.
Fuck.
He should’ve stayed at Sam’s. He should’ve…He should’ve done that differently.
How am I going to fix this?

🎁 📎 for Sarah and typhanie :)
Thanks for asking, hun!!! Sarah and Typh are definitely precious babies
🎁 - What kind of gift-giver are they? Do they give thoughtful gifts? Expensive gifts? Practical gifts?
Sarah is definitely a last-minute, tries to be thoughtful but is too panicked type of gift giver. She does put effort into it though, but she is so bad at dates that she has a tendency to...well forget. But she kicks ass at cards!!!
Typhanie is definitely the opposite. She has gifts planned out for every holiday and celebration at the beginning of the year and sometimes preorders them. For Christmas, she’ll do a bit more practical gifts for her friends and family, but on birthdays it’s normally something she just know the person really wanted.
📎 - How organised is your OC? Do they keep on top of responsibilities, or leave things to the last minute?
Between the two of them, Sarah is surprisingly the organized one. She knows her responsibilities and stays on top of them unless she just doesn’t give a fuck. (Thank you journaling.) Because she has enough craziness going on in her home life, she clings to that sort of structure that gets her through the day.
ON THE OTHER HAND, Typh is in band. She’s in Speech and Debate. She’s in Student Council. She helps at Steve’s tattoo shop. She is in Duel Credit classes. This girl is so smart, but she stretches herself super thin. She’s got organization down, but in her own way. She knows what she has to make in what classes to make a good impression, and she does exactly that. She knows the GPA she needs to make and what classes effect it the most. It’s almost weird how much effort she puts into knowing what she does and doesn’t need to get versus just doing it. XD
Thank you for asking!!!!

7, 9, 12 for Typh and Sarah
Awww!! Typh and Sarah got love!!! I love that!!! Thank you, Nonie :)
7. What do they get up to on a night out? On a night out, they tend to go to anywhere playing live music. Sarah knows how passionate Typhanie is about that sort of thing and she wants to be as supportive as possible. Sometimes the music sucks (to both of them) and they bail out as soon as possible, but other times it just leads to them jamming out and enjoying eachother's company.
9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other? These two have known each other for a long time. Remember that. The most embarassing thing that happened to Sarah was when they were kids. It was a couple months after they met. Sarah had gotten really sick, but didn't stay home and ended up throwing up in the middle of the cafeteria. She was sent home and later that day, Typh and Sam stopped by with some chicken noodle soup and her homework. (Typh also made a drawing for her.) Typhanie didn't actually do anything too embarassing until they were eight. Typhanie always went through with a dare when it came from Sarah. It was how she handled her crush. But it lead to her getting her tongue stuck to a pole in the middle of winter and...well...Typhanie learned that maybe she shouldn't be so eager to try and impress her crush. XD
12. What first changes when it starts getting serious? The two always had nicknames for eachother, so there wasn't a change in that. What did change was how sleepovers and PDA shifted. Sleepovers became a bit more watched over by parents and PDA became much more prominent. (Especially from Typh. She doesn't have to be kissing Sarah or anything, but she always likes touching her. It brings her comfort.)
Thank you for asking, Nonie!!! I love these two a lot. They're precious. XD

7 for Sarah and Typh
I always love when Sarah and Typh get love because I know they are part of an AU so it’s a little different.
#7 - a kiss to shut them up
And jeez, that is the perfect kiss for these two XD
Word Count: 459 words
Warnings: A very stressed Typh?

Shush
She’d been going on for an hour now. Exactly sixty minutes of ranting and raving, stress heavy in the air and making her worry. Not for herself, no. The worry was for the girl pacing back and forth, threatening to wear a hole into the carpet.
“Babe,” Sarah started, but the word fell on deaf ears. She couldn’t stop her smile. As much as she was worried about Typhanie, Sarah absolutely adored her passion. “Typh…”
Typhanie had switched her rant midsentence, completely oblivious to the fact that she had gone from ranting about her dual science class to now passionately discussing Speech and Debate. She couldn’t keep up with her own mind. So lost in her practiced speech, Typhanie didn’t realize that Sarah had pushed herself up from her spot on the massive couch.
Giggling, Sarah stepped in front of her girlfriend. Typhanie’s eyes were lost, probably more focused on the words passing along in her brain.
“If we let Congress pass this law then – “
Sarah’s fingers curled through Typhanie’s belt loops. She tugged her close, catching her lips mid-sentence and earning a startled yelp. Sarah smiled against her lips as Typhanie’s body finally relaxed. Arms wrapping loosely around the blonde’s neck, she stumbled back until her knees hit the couch.
The two fell, laughter bubbling between them as Sarah caught herself on top of Typhanie. “And what was that for,” Typh breathed, nose crinkling when Sarah’s hair tickled her cheeks.
“You’re going to melt your brain overthinking so much,” Sarah teased, kissing her again.
Typhanie laughed. She looped her legs over Sarah’s calves. “Guess I need you to calm me down, huh?”
“I mean…I think my methods work pretty well.”
Typhanie laughed, nodding as she said, “They most certainly do.”
“I’m going to count to three, guys.” The two looked up, cheeks darkening when they saw Sam standing in the doorway. “And I expect you two to be…” He gestured between them. “Off of each other.”
A pause.
“One.”
Sarah laughed as Typhanie squirmed.
“Two.”
Typhanie tried pushing at Sarah, huffing when Sarah clearly didn’t feel like budging.
“Sarah, please,” Sam begged.
Another laugh and Sarah hopped off. She sat on the opposite end of the couch, smiling a bit too cheekily as Typhanie looked to her dad. He groaned, a grimace appearing as he hurried out of the room. “I didn’t need to see any of that!”
When the door closed, Typhanie kicked at Sarah. “What was that for?”
Sarah burst into a fit of laughter, hugging her stomach as Typhanie glared. “Look, at least you’re not thinking about all the stuff you have to do now!”
Typhanie gaped at her. Grabbing the nearest pillow, she threw it at her obnoxious girlfriend and shouted, “Shut up!”

Death’s “Politicians In My Eyes” blared over headphones, threatening to deafen her poor ears. Not that she cared. Instead, Typhanie twirled around the kitchen and rocked from one foot to the other while waiting for the toaster to finish its attack on her poor bagel.
However, the awesome 70’s song grew quiet when her headphones were tugged off her head. She spun around, grinning when Sam held out her very burnt bagel. “Eating this will kill you.”
“Life’s all about risks.” She snatched the food right out of his hand, taking a bite before grabbing a Fanta from the fridge.
“Why’re you in such a rush?” Sam grabbed her backpack from the kitchen table, holding it out of her reach as Typhanie paused her song.
“I have a meeting with the school counselor.” With a mouth full of bagel, she shoved the last of her papers into a messy stack and shuffled them until they resembled something akin to order. Then, turning to her dad, Typhanie held out her hand. “Backpack, please.”
Sam silently raised a brow, waiting for some sort of elaboration. When none came, he shook his head and handed it over. “Be safe! And let me know if you’re hanging with Sarah after school.”
Already out the door, a muffled “got it” was the only sign she heard him.
He chuckled, looking out the window. His crazy teenager grabbed her skateboard and was already taking off. The pep in her step never wavered and god, he loved to see her smile like that. Sam pulled out his phone, taking a second to glance at the time before he muttered a soft, “Shit!”
It looked like his kid would be early, but Sam would mostly definitely be late.
--
“Ms. Y/L/N! Ms. Y/L/N!”
Y/N looked up to her open door, wondering who would be shouting her name this early in the morning. She caught sight of Typhanie sliding past the door and immediately scrambled to her feet. “Typhanie?” Y/N poked her head out as Typhanie kicked up her skateboard and tucked it under her arm. There was a giddiness to the teenager, something Y/N saw so rarely in the students she worked with. It made her smile. “You’re here because of our conversation, right?”
“Y – Yeah. I just have Speech and Debate practice later, so this is really the best time.”
Y/N’s smile faltered. Concerned, she asked, “What other school activities are you a part of?”
“Um…” Typhanie’s brow scrunched as her teeth caught her lip. “Band and StuCo. Plus I take duel credit where I can and Mr. Rogers hired me to help out at the shop when I have the time.”
“Wow.” Y/N leaned against her desk, hands braced against the edge. “Typhanie, I’ve looked at your grades. That and what you just told me, you’re doing amazing. I’m not sure why you’re worried about college. If anything, I’d be worried you’re overworking yourself.”
“I can manage this last year. That’s not a problem for me, Ms. Y/L/N.”
“Yeah, you mentioned.” Y/N walked around the table and flipped through her notes. “You’re worried about affording it, right?”
Typhanie nodded, sitting on the arm of the nearest chair. “Dad tries his best and I love him for it. I just – “ She swallowed the lump in her throat, twisting one of the many rings around her fingers. “I want to ease any sort of financial burden if there would be one.”
Y/N watched her carefully. She loved Typhanie’s determination. Her drive was impeccable. She knew exactly what she wanted and she wasn’t going to let anything get in her way. Nodding, Y/N pulled a file out of one of the desk drawers. “Then, let’s see what we can do, hm?”
--
Sarah had been hopeful ever since she and her dad had spoken about her anger. The fact that he believed in her, in Ms. Y/L/N helping them work through this, it brought a pep to her step that even her teachers noticed. They knew better than to question her about it. After all, no one wanted to be the reason for its disappearance.
However, the one person she wanted to talk to about it was Typhanie. And the girl was no where to be found this morning!
She had tried catching her at Sam’s, but she wasn’t there. Tried seeing if she’d be at the subway and there was no luck. Tried and tried and tried.
So there she was, totally surprised to find her girlfriend leaving her counselor’s office.
Definitely not something she expected to see today.
“Hey.” Concern etched her features. The pep wavered just a moment as Sarah approached Typhanie. She wasn’t even paying attention to the fact that Typhanie had a bunch of papers in hand or that she was smiling.
Girlfriend + Counselor = Concern.
That was all there was to it for Sarah. “What’s going on? Are you okay?” Sarah’s eyes flitted from her to Y/N who was pouring herself a cup of coffee and back.
Typhanie was already laughing. Sarah was too much like her dad. Protective and asking the wrong questions. “I’m fine,” she assured. “Ms. Y/L/N was just helping me with…” She shrugged, fiddling with the papers.
Sarah’s eyes drifted to the stack. On top, a list of colleges and scholarship opportunities. The wires finally connected in Sarah’s head. “You finally talked to her about college.” It wasn’t a question. It didn’t need to be. “Oh my god, you finally did it.” A cheek-hurting, face-splitting grin tugged at Sarah’s lips as she squealed. She tackled Typhanie in a hug, earning a startled laugh.
“Sarah! Oxygen,” she wheezed. But instead, she was only squeezed tighter. Startled laughter and an another attempted, “Sarah,” and yet still, there was no use. The bell rang, signaling the actual start to their day. “Babe, the bell!”
Sarah begrudgingly let go, making a point to give Typhanie that look. “We are not done with this. I swear, we are going to celebrate.”
“I haven’t even applied,” she reminded.
“I don’t care. As long as I’ve known you, this is what you’ve wanted. I’m not going to ignore it and nothing you can say will change that.”
Before Typhanie had a chance to comment on Sarah’s excitement, or even why she was in such a good mood, the blonde was kissing her cheek and running off to class. Typhanie stared for a long moment. Shocked. She looked over her shoulder - at the office that had given her so many answers. A thought crossed her mind. A rather valid one that had her wondering. Was Ms. Y/L/N was a bigger influence than any of them were realizing?
--
It wasn’t until lunch when Sarah and Typhanie actually got another moment together. Now, Sarah was much like a cat. Head in Typhanie’s lap, letting her play with her play with her hair as the much more responsible one flipped through paper after paper.
“I should’ve known you would go straight into the work part of it.” Sarah took a bite of her way-too-greasy cheese pizza. A long string stretched from food to lips before she finally gave it a good yank.
Typhanie glanced down at her. An unbecoming snort made her shoulders shake when she saw tomato sauce splattered on Sarah’s chin. She flicked her nose, earning an adorable scrunch as she teased, “And I should’ve known you’d pig out.”
Around a mouthful of food, Sarah declared, “’M hungry.”
“She’s always hungry.”
Typhanie looked up as Sarah half-assed an attempt at peering over the table. “Cassie!” Grinning like the cat that ate the canary, Sarah swung herself around so she could properly sit up. “Did you finally get a break from that stupid boyfriend?” Reaching across the table, she stole one of her friend’s French fries and shoved it in her mouth before it could be snatched right back.
Cassie rolled her eyes. “Stupid boyfriend is stupid ex-boyfriend now.”
Sarah’s nose wrinkled once more. “Gross.”
“I’m sorry, Cass. You want to talk about it?”
She shrugged, shaking her head and finally digging into her lunch before Sarah could eat it all. “Not really. Ned was a sweet guy, but there’s not really room in his whole friendship with that Parker guy.”
“Oh, yeah. Isn’t that the kid interning at Uncle Tony’s?”
Though the question was innocent enough, Typhanie turned to face Sarah. She pointed at her, a determined, “No,” putting a stop to any schemes Sarah could come up with.
“What?”
“Just no.”
Sarah huffed, shoulders slumping as Cassie giggled. An irritated whine left her lips, but everyone knew that Typhanie had won the non-argument.
“Jeez, you two are too good together. It’s gross.”
Typhanie shrugged, smiling. “I don’t mind it.”
“Well, yeah, of course you don’t! Everyone wants someone they can share – “ Cassie gestured to…well, all of them. “- That with.”
It was meant as a joke. Simple teasing between friends, really, but Cassie and Typhanie could practically see the lightbulb blip over Sarah’s head. “Cass, you crazy genius.”
“What’d I do?”
Sarah turned to face Typhanie this time. “Ms. Y/L/N really helped you with the college thing, right?”
Typhanie shrugged, taking a sip of her water. “Yeah, I guess.”
“And she’s helping me with my anger. She’s already met my whole family and knows their shit. Dad actually thinks she’s cool. In fact, Dad thinks she could be a huge help for us.”
Cassie waved a hand in the air, feeling very much like the kid in class who simply didn’t get it. “What am I missing here?”
And like always, Typhanie was quick to catch up. “No. Don’t you even – “
“I’m evening. I’m going there. You can’t stop me.” Sarah was already gathering her things and getting up.
Typhanie had no choice, but to watch as the dominoes lined up and chaos prepared to unfold. It was then she saw it. That pep in her step. Excited and unwavering, Sarah headed inside like a woman on a mission.
“Typh, what’s going on?”
She spared Cassie a glance and shook her head. “Believe me, I’m not even sure I want to know.”

A Day at Coney Island
Nonnie’s Request: “Could I request all your OCs going to Coney island together? Maybe with Bucky and another of the boys as a chaperone? 😲😲😲”
A/N: I can’t believe how excited I got for this request. Thank you, Nonnie, so much. And just know that my OCs are ALWAYS open for any requests ya got. This was amazing and the highlight of my day. :) Also, for this shot I basically plucked all of my characters out of their worlds and threw them in a new one. XD
Summary: It’s not every day that these guys can catch a break, but go big or go home, right?
Word Count: 3128 words
Warnings: This is tooth-rotting fluff. How could I make this angsty?? Seriously - It’s meant to brighten your day. But there is cussing. There’s always cussing. XD
--
Nothing could ever compare to Coney Island. The feel of the sun warming their skin? The smell of too much salt and sunscreen? Obnoxious laughter and carnival music ringing in their ears? Truly, there was nothing like it.
“Roll the window down! Roll it down!” Marie’s urgency and beating against her thighs was enough to earn a laugh from Jeneva.
Pulling up next to their second vehicle, Jeneva rolled down her corvette’s window. Aviators hid her glowing eyes as she watched the other car’s window disappear. She was met by Andie’s beaming face and Sam peeking around her from the driver’s side. “How did y’end up in the front seat,” she asked Andie, knowing very well that meant Shuri and Bucky had been crammed into the back. Both had wanted to ride with Jeneva instead of the mom-mobile minivan, but Marie had won rock-paper-scissors.
“Same way Marie won your ride,” Andie told her. The passenger doors opened automatically with people piling out. Bucky was grumbling about being crammed in the backseat yet again as Jeneva pulled her keys out of her car.
Sarah rolled her eyes, unable to fight her smile as Typhanie wrapped her arms around Sarah’s shoulders. “He was whining the whole way, Jen. Can you take him next time,” the blonde asked as Sam locked the minivan.
Marie pouted. “No way. I don’t want to ride in that thing.”
“But you made me,” Shuri reminded her. Marie’s ears turned a bright pink as her best friend teased her. It really didn’t matter what that girl said, it was too easy for her to fluster Marie.
Bucky came up behind Jeneva, amusement glittering in his eyes as he watched the younger Lebeau act like such a teenager. She could break into almost any network, rewrite codes as if she were singing her ABC’s, and yet Shuri simply talking to her was enough to make her awkward. “Remember,” he said, giving a pointed look to Andie and Jeneva. “No powers.”
Jeneva waved him off. “Y’no fun.”
“Come on!” Shuri grabbed Marie’s hand, interlacing her fingers and quickly pulling her ahead. “I don’t want to spend the whole day in the parking lot!”
Andie giggled as she ran after them. Really, the idea of going to the beach was her favorite part. She loved sunbathing and that ocean was practically screaming her name.
Sam came up beside Bucky. Them and Jeneva lagged behind, watching his kid and Steve’s quick on their feet. He glanced at Bucky, raising a brow. “This is going to be a mess of a day, isn’t it?”
“Oh, for sure,” Bucky told him, noticing Jeneva roll her eyes even behind her sunglasses. He flicked her hat before spinning the bill around, nestling it on the back of her head. “Let’s get there before they kill the whole park.”
--
While Coney Island was naturally a busy place buzzing with people and energy, the group had brought another sort of life to it. They were so used to their chaotic lives that days like this were rare indeed. But still – if they were planning a whole day here, they had to choose their moments wisely.
Arcade games during the day.
Crazy rides at night.
“And the little lady is a winner again!” Andie smiled far too innocently as she won the sharpshooter game. Again. Bucky looked from his water gun to hers and then to that dimpled smile she had. The silent look on his face said it all. How? How did she do it?
“I think we have a new sharpshooter,” Sam teased Bucky as Andie was handed a massive stuffed giraffe.
“Oh, shut it, Birdbrain.”
Typhanie, Sarah, and Marie were playing ski-ball, albeit all in their own way. Typhanie would shoot hers back to back, consistently hitting the center and second holes. Meanwhile, Marie was using her computer brain to calculate the precise angle needed for countless high scores. The top two holes were hit over and over again. Marie never missed.
Both women were on either side of Sarah, teasing her endlessly. This was clearly not her game. She was lucky to get the lowest ones and sometimes even managed to send the ball flying back her way. A yelp shot out of her throat as the skiball flew towards her head. She ducked, looking over her shoulder just as Jeneva caught the ball. In her hand and in Shuri’s were caramel apples.
“Y’gonna injure someone, petite.”
“Sorry,” Sarah muttered.
Electricity crackled around the ball as she tossed it into the air, catching it again. Sidestepping Sarah, she took her shot. The ball landed in the middle hole, short circuiting it. Ticket after ticket poured out of the machine as Sarah’s eyes grew to the size of saucers.
“That’s cheating,” Shuri reminded Jeneva, whacking her arm.
“Oh, c’mon. It’s a game.” Jeneva laughed when she saw how big Sarah was smiling. “’Sides,” she whispered to Shuri. “The fille needed help, ca va?”
Shuri glanced at Sarah as she gathered up the tickets. “Fine, klepto, but Bucky did say no powers.”
Typhanie looked up, snorting when she heard that. “You’re kidding, right? He’s still pouting because Andie beat him at the water gun thing. I think he’s ready to declare it rigged.”
“Sounds ‘bout right,” Marie commented, not looking their way. Shuri grinned, a sneaky glint flickering in her eyes.
“Hey, Miss Marie.” She planted a sticky-sweet kiss on Marie’s cheek moments before the ball flew from her fingers. Beat red, Marie watched as her last ball landed in the gutter. Innocently, Shuri asked, “Was that my fault?”
“Uh – I -- “ Marie huffed, ducking her head. “Non. That was ‘cause o’moi.”
A warm pair of arms wrapped around Jeneva and she felt a chin rest on top of her head. “Heard y’lost a shootin’ game,” Jeneva teased, not bothering to look up as Bucky’s arms squeezed her gently.
“Shush you.” Bucky grabbed her wrist and brought the caramel apple to his lips.
Jeneva yelped, squirming in his grip to try to keep the caramel from dripping on her. “Can’t y’get y’own?”
He shrugged and released her wrist, munching on the treat. “More fun this way.”
Andie came over, struggling to keep her arms wrapped around the giraffe. “This thing is awesome.” Typhanie came up, running her fingers through the cheap fuzz that made up the giraffe’s fur. “We all need to leave here with giant stuffed animals.”
“Hell yes,” Typhanie agreed. “We could get a huge photo of them on the beach.” She looked at Sarah. “How does that sound?”
“I’m all for it, but not the shooting game. I suck at that.”
Typhanie whipped her head around, searching for something that would work. “What about that one?” She pointed and Sarah followed her gaze. There was one of those games that was kind of like ring toss, but it was set up with little plastic balls and fishbowls. Sarah smiled.
That would work.
“See you guys in a bit!” Sarah grabbed Typhanie’s wrist, earning a squeal of laughter before the two were heading towards the game.
“Gotta admit,” Bucky told Sam, noting the tension in his shoulders. “They’re cute together.”
“Yeah,” Sam mumbled begrudgingly. “Still don’t have to like it.”
Andie rolled her eyes. “Jeez, you’re such a dad, you know that?”
“Well, I guess it’s a good thing I am one then.”
“Alright, y’guys,” Marie spoke up, finally finding her voice again. “If we’re gonna make this photo happen, we should probably find more games. Where to next?”
--
Two hours passed and finally everyone had their own stuffed animal. Even Sam and Bucky. Since this was Andie’s and Typhanie’s idea, the pair were currently lining up the animals near the water, trying to find the best angles. Andie’s giraffe and Typhanie’s bear were on either end. Sarah’s elephant was propped against the bear and Shuri had managed to win an octopus that was delicately placed next to the giraffe. Not that anyone but Marie really noticed. Jeneva’s long-armed monkey and Bucky’s wolf were propped in the middle, separated at Sam’s insistence for his goofy looking goldfish with way-too-big eyes.
“Alright, perfect!” Andie jumped to her feet, pulling out her phone. “No one touch anything!” Her jeans were rolled up as she stepped into the water, attempting to get a good angle. However, the way the wind was blowing kept knocking her hair in her face. As much as she tried to get it out of the way, it wasn’t willing to work with her. It took Sarah pulling her hair into a messy ponytail for Andie to finally get her photo.
“That good for you,” Bucky asked. His metal arm glinted in the sunlight. Because they were closer to the water, he’d taken off his jacket and let Jeneva wear it. Was it necessary? Maybe not, but he knew it made Jeneva more comfortable about being closer to the ocean.
Andie stuck her tongue out at him. “Yeah, Old man, that’s good for me,” she mocked as the Lebeau girls snickered. She shrugged her tote off her shoulder. It was woven, painted to look like a rainbow. Inside was her beach towel and some sunscreen, but still plenty of room for all their prizes. “Alright, toss ‘em in.”
One by one, each stuffed toy was crammed into the tote until only the giraffe head was peeking out. Andie looked out at the water, noticing how pretty the sky was starting to look. As much as she wanted a chance to lie in the sun, she had to admit. She was having more fun spending time with her friends. “So…we did the arcade games,” she said, looking back at her friends. “What’s next?”
--
“HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIII – “ Bucky’s scream carried through the air with ease as they whipped through the Cyclone. It might have been Steve who had thrown up the first time they rode the crazy rollercoaster, but there was a true possibility that it would be Bucky this time around.
He collided into Jeneva, pinning her into the side of the cart. She laughed, her sunglasses tucked safely away and eyes glowing their pretty gold. “Fuck, y’heavy,” she shouted over the roar of rumbling wood and metal.
“Everybody, hold on,” Shuri said, not even bothering to listen to her own advice. She threw her hands into the air as Marie attempted to shrink in her seat.
“Fuck! Shit! Damnit!!” The slurs weren’t enough for Marie. She quickly switched to her French tongue as her thick hair waved frantically in the wind. “’M gonna die, ‘m gonna die!”
“God, you’re no fun,” Sarah shouted at Marie as she and Typhanie slammed into one another around the curve. The ride was old. And creaking. Half the terror that came from the ride was due to the sheer curiosity of whether or not it would stay in one piece.
And being the thrill seeker that she was, Sarah loved it.
Typhanie yelped as her ribs slammed into the metal bar. Oh, that hurt. She twisted slightly, clinging to Sarah as their cackling filled the air. That alone was the reminder for the group that this was certainly their idea.
“I’m picking the next riIIDE!” Sam shouted from behind as Andie cackled next to him.
Half of the team were heroes, used to training and fighting against the bad guys. But facing the Cyclone? That was a whole other beast.
Stumbling off the ride, Bucky leaned heavily against Jeneva as she attempted to put her sunglasses on. “Homme, y’a super soldier! A coaster ain’t gonna send y’t’ya knees.” Bucky chuckled. Apparently her comment was enough to send his mind reeling. He leaned forward, whispering something in her ear that earned a bright pink tinge to her cheeks. Huffing, Jeneva elbowed him in the stomach. The obnoxious grunt that came from him was enough to satisfy her. “Behave y’self.”
“You’re no fun, Doll.”
“How ‘bout somethin’ a petite calmer,” Marie asked, her hand clinging to the crook of Shuri’s elbow. “Sil vous plait?”
Shuri gave her a small smile. Marie was definitely calmer than Jeneva. She didn’t thrive off of energy, something the other Lebeau had to do because of her powers. Marie preferred staying tucked away in her computer lab, exploring a world in technology that no one else had really understood before the two had met. Brushing some of Marie’s tangled hair out of her face, Shuri asked, “What about the Wonder Wheel?” She looked at the others, seeing them all share a look that meant they were on board.
“Wonder Wheel,” Andie said, flicking her hair over her shoulder. “Here we go.”
--
It’s a much calmer experience than the Cyclone had been. Everyone piled into their own passenger cars. The lights flickered, glowing against their skin. “You and your friends picked a good time,” the attendant told Typhanie and Sarah. “The fireworks should be starting soon.”
“Cool,” Typhanie tugged Sarah in, laughing when her girlfriend stumbled into her seat. Sarah huffed, running a hand through her hair as the attendant closed the door. “Aw, you’re pouting,” Typhanie teased, poking her cheek.
“Shut up,” Sarah muttered, throwing her legs across Typhanie’s lap. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”
“I could say the same thing to you.” Typhanie tugged her legs closer, forcing Sarah to get tucked into her side. Knowing Sarah wasn’t really upset, she gave her a sweet kiss.
Sarah giggled against her lips. “I thought the tradition was to kiss the girl at the top of the Ferris Wheel.”
“When do we ever follow tradition?”
Their laughter bubbled up, carrying to Marie’s and Shuri’s passenger car. They were sitting across from each other, the car gently rocking as they looked out at the water. It was a beautiful sight with the moon reflecting in the waves. “Merci,” Marie whispered, fingers playing with the ends of her hair as Shuri turned to look her way.
“For what?”
“Pickin’ this ride. It’s exactly what I needed.”
A small smile tugged at Shuri’s lips. She knew she wasn’t supposed to move around in the car. Not when they were in the air. But it couldn’t be helped. She moved quickly, noticing the way Marie sat a little straighter, and plopped into the seat next to her. “I like you.” Shuri noticed the panic flashing in Marie’s eyes. “A lot. And I know you’re freaking out, but I also know you feel the same way. You aren’t subtle.”
Marie bit her lip, eyes flicking and searching Shuri’s face. “I – I – “ She felt like she couldn’t talk. Taking a slow breath, Marie admitted, “I don’t understand romance. Or fallin’ in love. I’m not like mon famille who just dives in headfirst. I’m awkward…And I like when t’ings make sense. Romance and love don’t. And that terrifies moi.”
Shuri was waiting for the but. There had to be one. Surely, she hadn’t been imagining what was happening between them. Right?
“But I do. Like y’, I mean. I’m just really bad at understandin’ what that means.”
Shuri felt giddy. She didn’t mind the need to understand that came with Marie. It just meant that they had to work together. Intertwining their hands, Shuri gave a gentle squeeze. Marie shifted her gaze to their hands. It fit so well. “Maybe,” Shuri offered, nudging her with her shoulder. “We take it slow? And figure it all out together?”
Marie smiled, looking back at Shuri. “I t’ink I can get behind that.”
Jeneva had been watching from above, peering over the edge and trying to hear everything that was going on. She couldn’t help it. She liked making sure that Marie was okay.
“Get over here.” Bucky looped his flesh arm around her waist, tugging her back into his chest. “She’s a big girl, Jen. Let her figure it out.”
“I know,” Jeneva grumbled as she turned towards Bucky. He pushed her sunglasses on top of her head, smiling when he saw that liquid gold flickering in her eyes. “I just don’t want ‘er t’get hurt. That so bad?”
“No, it’s not,” Bucky assured her, his thumb running along her cheek. He watched as electricity ran under her skin, chasing after his thumb and making her skin glow. There was a time when he had thought those powers could only hurt people. Now…he knew that sometimes her powers had a calming effect. They could provide warmth and an odd feeling of fullness that he had come to love. Just like he loved her. “But we’re at the top of the Wonder Wheel,” he told her just as the ride pulled to a stop. “And I’d like a bit of your attention before you force me into that minivan again.”
Jeneva’s jaw dropped, a shocked laugh filling the air. “I didn’t! Marie won fair ‘n’ square!”
Bucky grinned. “Whatever,” he said, not fully believing that she would have forced Marie into the minivan.
The crackle and pop of fireworks grabbed their attention. Jeneva settled in on Bucky’s lap, resting her head on his shoulder as the sky lit up. Though her eyes watched the glow and show intently, his gaze was focused on her. The way her eyes flickered a little brighter with every new firework. How warm she felt because of the electricity coursing through her veins. The way her steady heart always made him feel calm. Pressing a small kiss to her forehead, he rest his cheek on her head, careful of the sunglasses, and looked back to the show she was so entranced by.
“How much you want to bet that none of them are actually watching the show?”
Sam glanced back at Andie. She had that same old, knowing smile on her lips. He scrunched his nose. While he and Bucky were supposed to be the chaperones for the day, he knew that Bucky would slack off since Jeneva was there. But still…
He didn’t need to picture it.
“I need you to keep those thoughts to yourself. One of them is my kid, you know.”
“Oh, I know.” Andie grinned like the cat that ate the canary, cuddling into her giraffe as another firework burst in the air. “That’s why I said it.”
Sam rolled his eyes. “You’re as mean as Barnes, you know that?”
Andie laughed. “Careful. Imagine if I was his kid.”
He shuddered. “Nope. No, that’s worse than the idea of all of them ignoring the show.”
Andie’s laughter, though drowned out by the fireworks, was filled with warmth. The type that could only come from a day like today. A day with friends. With family. A day at Coney Island.
