Horror Movie Review: The Company of Wolves (1984)
A spin of Red Riding Hood. Rosaleen's lupine-centric dreams laced with stories of witches and wolves, leads her directly into a fairy-tale of her own.

Starring Angela Lansbury, David Warner, Micha Bergese and Sarah Patterson in her film debut. The film begins in the present day, within a country house. THE COMPANY OF WOLVES (1984) – Episode 226 – Decades Of Horror 1980s
“Never stray from the path, never eat a windfall apple, and never trust a man whose eyebrows meet.” “Good advice,” he said after first checking in the mirror. Join your faithful Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr – as they check out maybe a more accurate telling of “Little Red Riding Hood” than you’re used to in The Company of Wolves (1984), as envisioned in three stories from The Bloody Chamber, a short story collection by Angela Carter.

The Company of Wolves is directed by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with a Vampire) and stars Angela Lansbury, David Warner, Micha Bergese, and Sarah Patterson in her film debut. The tales woven into Jordan’s second feature film are primarily based on three werewolf stories (“The Company of Wolves,” “Wolf-Alice,” and “The Werewolf”) in Angela Carter’s short story collection The Bloody Chamber (1979).
An entirely different kind of werewolf movie, The Company of Wolves (1984) is definitely one you should consider for your must-watch list. Join the Grue-Crew as they revisit this wicked twist on fairy tales featuring Granny and Rosaleen – familiar, yet creatively original.
At the time of this writing, The Company of Wolves is available to stream from Peacock, Tubi, and Kanopy, among others. It is also available as a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition from Shout! Factory.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Crystal, will be Vampire’s Kiss (1988). Is everyone ready for some Nicolas Cage energy?

- Gentlemen. I find it strange. You are poets, each one of you and speak of your muse in the feminine. And yet you appear to feel neither tenderness nor respect towards your wives nor towards females in general. - Madam! I have only the highest regard and purest respect for females. - I find no evidence of that sentiment in your conversation.

The Company of Wolves (1984)
"Was it a wolf or a man you killed?"
"When I killed it, it was a wolf. It turned into a man. Seeing is believing!"
"Is it? What about touching?"
#the company of wolves#british cinema#fantasy film#angela carter#neil jordan#Horror imagery#Sarah Patterson#angela lansbury#david warner#Tusse silberg#Georgia slowe#Graham Crowden#brian glover#Kathryn pogson#stephen rea#Micha bergese#Shane Johnstone#Richard morant#jim carter#terence stamp#George Fenton#I left a long review of this on letterboxd but I don't think I can replicate it here. Suffice to say this is something special#The most instinctively real translation of fairy tales for screen‚ somehow capturing the very essence and exploring the core themes#But not shying away from the more adult side of those tales: the horror‚ both bloodily physical and more inexpressible and ancient; sex and#Sexuality‚ particularly in that moment between childhood and adulthood‚ the uneasy acknowledgement of something within and without#As well as examining familial relationships‚ marriage as contract or as promise‚ the impossibility of applying morality to the animal#This is all stuff Carter had examined (and woukd continue to examine) in her written work‚ and I'm grateful she worked on the script. Sort#Of incredible‚ shockingly violent in places‚ with a great cast (David! My David!) and some truly messed up practical effects. It isn't#Perfect‚ there are limitations that couldn't be met with the modest budget Jordan had‚ nor the sfx capabilities of the time#But it's a unique voice in 80s cinema‚ and a film that does things and tries things that not many films would have thought worthwhile
